Analysis Of Dna Damage And Oxidative Stress In Human Spermatozoa And Some Biochemical Changes In Seminal Plasma And Their Correlation With Semen Quality Of Infertile Men, Ghassan T. Alani, Sermed S. Khonda, Hedef D. El Yaseen
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have shown the presence of DNA strand breaks in human ejaculated spermatozoa. The nature of this nuclear anomaly and its relationship to patient etiology is however poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: This study was done to investigate the relationship between nuclear DNA damage, assessed using the TUNEL assay and a number of biochemical parameters including zinc level, copper level, and the malondialdehyde (MDA) level as an indicator of the lipid peroxidation and also the standard general seminal fluid examination. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study 100 seminal samples were tested. Seventy five infertile patients aged (30.33±5.96) and 25 …

Comparative Study On The Effect Of Antibiotics And Non Antibiotics Therapy (Phytotherapy) On Some Bacteria Isolated From Urinary Tract Infection, Ikram Amin Khakii, Ban Auday Abdul Sattar, Zahraa Qasim Ali
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSRACT: BACKGROUND: Phytotherapy is an alternative for antibiotics therapy in these days since resistance to many antibiotics used in treatment are increasing along with high cost of some antibiotics and side effect on patients. Punica granatum and Vaccinium macrocarpon have antimicrobial properties. this paper suggest that P. granatum and Vaccinium macrocarpon may be more effective than some antibiotics used in the treatment of some Gram negative urinary tract pathogens. OBJECTIVE: Punica granatum juice, cranberry juice and antibiotics were used to investigate the antimicrobial activity by using well diffusion method. MATERIALS & METHODS: A total of four different urinary tract causing …

The domestic cat (Felis catus) shows remarkable sensitivity to the adverse effects of phenolic drugs, including acetaminophen and aspirin, as well as structurally-related toxicants found in the diet and environment. This idiosyncrasy results from pseudogenization of the gene encoding UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A6, the major species-conserved phenol detoxification enzyme. Here, we established the phylogenetic timing of disruptive UGT1A6 mutations and explored the hypothesis that gene inactivation in cats was enabled by minimal exposure to plant-derived toxicants. Fixation of the UGT1A6 pseudogene was estimated to have occurred between 35 and 11 million years ago with all extant Felidae having dysfunctional …

Dynamics Of An Emerging Infectious Disease Of Amphibians: From Individuals To Communities, Matthew Damien Venesky
Dynamics Of An Emerging Infectious Disease Of Amphibians: From Individuals To Communities, Matthew Damien Venesky
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Chytridiomycosis is an infectious disease of amphibians caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), and it has played an important role in the worldwide decline of amphibians. My dissertation research examined the consequences of Bdinfections on tadpole feeding biomechanics and activity, pathogen transmission, and host immunology. The keratinized labial teeth of Bd-infected Fowler's Toad (Anaxyrus [=Bufo] fowleri) and Grey Treefrog (Hyla versicolor) tadpoles slipped off of surfaces on which they grazed and were in contact with an algal-covered surface for a shorter duration of time during each feeding cycle. During feeding trials, Bd-infected A. fowleri and H. versicolor tadpoles obtained …

Effects Of Physical Activity On Mental Health In Adolescence And Emerging Adulthood, Celina M. Dabrowski, Carly Miller
Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology Research Exchange Conference
Poster Presentation:
Physical activity is known to have a variety of positive effects on the overall functioning of human beings. As developing professional counselors, understanding the effects of physical activity on mental health is of special concern. In order to understand the specific effects of physical activity on adolescents and emerging adults, an analysis of recent literature was conducted. It was found that physical activity has a profound impact on various aspects of development in these stages.

The Relationship Of Physical Activity, Eating Behaviors, And Hunger Control To Weight Loss And Quality Of Life In Gastric Banding Patients, Nancy Baugh
Theses and Dissertations
Gastric banding as a weight loss surgery has increased in popularity in the United States since its approval by the Food and Drug Administration in 2001. Successful weight loss after weight loss surgery is most frequently defined as greater than 50 percent of excess weight loss (EWL). Systematic reviews show that the band is widely effective in achieving successful weight loss in most patients, however individual studies show more inconsistent outcomes. Although previous research supports gastric bypass surgery as having a positive effect on quality of life after gastric bypass, there is very little data to support this relationship in …

Background: Women who develop gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have an increased risk for the development of type 2 diabetes. Despite this "window of opportunity," few intervention studies have targeted postpartum women with a history of GDM. We sought perspectives of women with a history of GDM to identify a) barriers and facilitators to healthy lifestyle changes postpartum, and b) specific intervention approaches that would facilitate participation in a postpartum lifestyle intervention program.
Methods: We used mixed methods to gather data from women with a prior history of GDM, including focus groups and informant interviews. Analysis of focus groups relied on …

This research was performed with national organizations to gather socio-demographic and sanitary information regarding aging population in Lebanon. It was also accomplished through investigators concerned in health care in Lebanon. Demographic trends, life expectancy, variations in population aging within the country were illustrated. We also appraised general and dental status, health service and policy, in addition to social security anticipated for elderly.

An Observation Of Immunological Effect, A Diet Enhanced With Spirulina And Treatment With Fractalkine In Models Of Parkinson's Disease, Mibel M. Pabón
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In my dissertation research we used use human wild type α-synuclein gene expression using an adeno-associated viral vector (AAV9) that induced a slowly progressive loss of dopamine (DA) neurons in the Substantia nigra (SN) as one of our animal model of Parkinson’s disease (PD). It is our hypothesis that neuroinflammation predisposes the brain to susceptibility to neurodegenerative diseases. Thus we examined the progression of a PD lesion and examined the manipulations of the immune system to understand further the inflammatory role when we administered exogenous soluble fractalkine.
The specific etiology of neurodegeneration in PD is unknown, but the inflammatory mechanisms …

Assessing The Impact Of Nutritional And Exercise Recommendations On Health Fair Participants: Follow-Up Program: Partnering Up For A Healthier You, Amy Mcmanness
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The primary objective of our study was to estimate the impact pharmacy students can have through the provision of educational fitness and nutrition materials and body composition assessments to increase knowledge in the general population at various health fairs throughout Indianapolis. The secondary objective was to assess the impact of follow-up phone calls on patient success towards personal health goals. It also provided an accountability and information resource to patients enrolled in the follow-up program as well as gauged the overall acceptance of pharmacists in this community role.
