The Positive Case For Centralization In Health Care Regulation: The Federalism Failures Of The Aca, Abigail R. Moncrieff, Eric Lee
The Positive Case For Centralization In Health Care Regulation: The Federalism Failures Of The Aca, Abigail R. Moncrieff, Eric Lee
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
Although the ACA accomplishes significantly greater centralization of authority for healthcare regulation, it falls far short of the full centralization that seems functionally justified. There is no doubt that the states have played an important role in healthcare regulation throughout the nation's history, but that role is becoming increasingly irrelevant as healthcare regulation becomes increasingly technocratic—i.e., increasingly objectivist and data-driven. The ACA is a step in the right direction, but the U.S. should further centralize authority over healthcare.

Homocysteine And Cardiac Neural Crest Cell Cytoskeletal Proteins In The Chick Embryo, Anthony R. Mwakikunga, Amanda L. Clubine, Darrell J. Wiens
Homocysteine And Cardiac Neural Crest Cell Cytoskeletal Proteins In The Chick Embryo, Anthony R. Mwakikunga, Amanda L. Clubine, Darrell J. Wiens
Faculty Work
Elevated serum homocysteine (Hcys) is correlated with cardiovascular disease and with embryonic malformations related to neural crest cells (NCCs). We predicted Hcys may alter the balance of actin networks, stress fibers and focal adhesions, altering migration. We cultured neural tube explants in control and Hcys-treated medium and visualized actin, α-actinin, vinculin, filamin, and LIM3 protein in NCCs migrating outward. In Hcys, phalloidin-stained actin in stress fibers was brighter, and vinculin was more abundant in focal adhesions and lamellipodia. α-actinin and LIM3 were also enhanced around nuclei and in focal adhesions, and α-actinin also in filopodia. Filamin was unchanged. Hcys caused …

Helplessness To Hope: Cultural Transformations For The Maasai Girl-Child, Kelly Suzanne Bingham
Helplessness To Hope: Cultural Transformations For The Maasai Girl-Child, Kelly Suzanne Bingham
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study examined how the life dreams of the girls at the MTH Center of Hope in Kenya are being altered as a result in a change of cultural experience. The center was built as a place of rescue to protect Maasai girls from early marriage, FGM and extreme poverty while allowing them to stay in school. The phenomenological study included observations, interviews, focus groups and a questionnaire that was used to elicit responses and begin dialogue. Results indicate that there is a definite need not only for secondary and tertiary education for the girls but also to train the …

Administrator Satisfaction With Long-Term Care Foodservice, Maria Ahern
Honors Projects
This study investigated the satisfaction levels of Michigan long-term care administrators to determine whether they are more satisfied with self-operated or contract managed food service at their facility. Using an on-line survey, administrator’s satisfaction levels with various aspects of their foodservice operations as well as demographic information about their facility was collected and analyzed. Data showed that 83% of administrators were satisfied or very satisfied with self-operated foodservice operations compared to 50% of those with contract foodservice. While too few responses were obtained to reliably determine the significance of the results, this preliminary study indicates a need for further investigation. …

“Natural Disaster Plans And How They Need To Be Fixed”, Christopher Poitevien
“Natural Disaster Plans And How They Need To Be Fixed”, Christopher Poitevien
Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects
Natural disasters have affected our history, affect our present, and will affect our future. Because of this our world needs to adapt. But disaster plans already established should include certain aspects that would limit the amount of damage inflicted by the disaster and the number of lives that are lost. The problem with the literature is that it does not cover what should be done to decrease the number of lives lost and limit the damage that could occur. The first thing that it needs is disaster epidemiologists. These are scientists that go back into the history of the area …

Review Of Panulirus Argus Virus 1-- A Decade After Its Discovery, Donald C. Behringer Jr., Mark J. Butler Iv, Jeffrey D. Shields, Jessica Moss
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
In 2000, a pathogenic virus was discovered in juvenile Caribbean spiny lobsters Panulirus argus from the Florida Keys, USA. Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1) is the first naturally occurring pathogenic virus reported from lobsters, and it profoundly affects their ecology and physiology. PaV1 is widespread in the Caribbean with infections reported in Florida (USA), St. Croix, St. Kitts, Yucatan (Mexico), Belize, and Cuba. It is most prevalent and nearly always lethal in the smallest juvenile lobsters, but this declines with increasing lobster size; adults harbor the virus, but do not present the characteristic signs of the disease. No other PaV1 …
Understanding Mesosystemic Influences On Reported Health Among Rural Low-Income Women: A Structural Equation Analysis, Tiffany Wigington
Understanding Mesosystemic Influences On Reported Health Among Rural Low-Income Women: A Structural Equation Analysis, Tiffany Wigington
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
While ensuring access to health insurance and health care services is important, emerging research indicates that individual health and well-being result from a complex array of environmental, social, and psychological factors. The delineation of how factors of health and well-being unfold and impact rural low-income women is particularly salient for social workers who provide services to rural residents and who work within a rural context. Utilizing components from the ecological systems perspective, this study explored how the factors associated with health risk influenced reported health and mesosystemic processes among rural low-income women. This sample (n=304) for this study was drawn …
Characterizing The Chemoprevention Potential Of Amenity Grass Phenolic Extracts In Vitro And The Corresponding Nutraceutical Targets Within Hepg2 Carcinoma Cells, Casey J. Wegner
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This research has revealed significant chemopreventive potential belonging to the planet’s most renewable and abundant plant source: amenity grasses. The characterization results from Chapter 1 demonstrated the potential chemoprevention attributes of supina bluegrass and bermudagrass crude extracts linked to the extensive phenolic acid profiles of these amenity grasses. In contrast to cereals, amenity grass phenolic extracts (AGPE) offer appreciable amounts of unbound/free ferulic acid that would be available for rapid in vivo absorption. The literature has shown ferulic acid to be a highly available and health benefitting phenolic compound. Chapter 1 in vitro studies demonstrated AGPE-induced antiproliferation and apoptotic induction …
Preschool Children’S Willingness To Try And Preference For Docosahexaenoic Acid Omega-3 Foods, Bethany Joann Bettenhausen
Preschool Children’S Willingness To Try And Preference For Docosahexaenoic Acid Omega-3 Foods, Bethany Joann Bettenhausen
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
During the preschool years, obesigenic eating habits are formed which are strongly associated with risk of developing chronic diseases later in life particularly cardiovascular disease. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3 fatty acid is a polyunsaturated fat with known benefits for heart health, brain cell structure, and retinal development. Current intakes of DHA are below recommended levels. United States (US) Midwestern children may be particularly at risk for suboptimal intakes of DHA. However, foods fortified with life’sDHATM, a product of Martek Biosciences and omega-3 eggs may provide culturally acceptable sources of DHA to Midwestern children.
Very little is known about …

Omega-3 Dietary Intakes, Knowledge, And Attitudes In Patients Screened For Colon Cancer, Cindy Kaminski
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Objective: The purpose of this study was to estimate Omega-3 (n-3) fatty acid intakes in colonoscopy patients and to examine knowledge and attitudes held about dietary fats.
Subjects/Methods: Men (n=32) and women (n=47) patients were recruited from a Midwestern gastroenterology clinic. A dietitian obtained informed consent, a food recall and response from a 152-item n-3 food frequency questionnaire (n-3 FFQ) at the clinic using visuals and food models. Two additional 24-h recalls, including a weekend recall, were returned by mail. A questionnaire measuring diet fatty acids knowledge, diet attitudes and beliefs was also obtained.
Results: Daily intake of n-3 fatty …
Searching For The Soul Of American Medicine : What Three High-Quality, Low-Cost Health Care Systems Can Teach U.S. Policymakers, Benjamin A. Paul
Searching For The Soul Of American Medicine : What Three High-Quality, Low-Cost Health Care Systems Can Teach U.S. Policymakers, Benjamin A. Paul
Honors Theses
"The United States health care system is broken." This common refrain has been echoed by policymakers and politicians, Democrats and Republicans, and liberals and conservatives alike. They point to the unacceptably high number of uninsured Americans, out of control costs, and questionable quality as just some of the problems that afflict American health care. Before the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in March, 2010, over 45 million Americans were without health insurance coverage.1 Health care spending currently accounts for 17% of this country‘s gross domestic product. In contrast, most industrialized European countries cover all of their …
