Adaptation And Validation Of Existing Analytical Methods For Monitoring Prebiotics Present In Different Types Of Processed Food Matrices, Pei Tze Ang
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Interest in resistant starch (RS) as a prebiotic is increasing due to its putative impacts on the gastrointestinal microbiome and thus colon health. Application of RS as a food ingredient is also increasing because of its unique functionality. However, a major obstacle when correlating RS containing food systems to the potential health benefits is the discrepancy in the analytical tests applied and the limitations of those methods used throughout the literature. Therefore, the Megazyme resistant starch assay was adapted and developed to monitor RS present in different types of products commonly consumed in the United States, including an extruded ready-to-eat …

A Mixed Methods Study Examining The Efficacy Of Art Media On Stress Reduction, Lilani Pecht
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
When considering today’s academic standards, most know that medical students and residents stand in a distinguished class of disciplines undertaking one of the most stressful scholastic paths. Because this notion is becoming more recognizable with the help of research and published studies, some universities have begun implementing electives focused on the health and well being of their students. Such electives have included a variety of stress relieving activities and interventions, including the use of art therapy. While the literature does indicate an effective use of art therapy and art media to alleviate stress, it does not include a study that …

The Vehicle Routing Problem With A Volunteer Workforce, Leonardo Gala
The Vehicle Routing Problem With A Volunteer Workforce, Leonardo Gala
Theses
Non-profit organizations like the Meals on Wheels association of America rely on a volunteer workforce to prepare and deliver meals to approximately one million home-bound citizens nation-wide. At the community level, hundreds of volunteers are routed through rural, sub-urban, and urban sectors daily. These communities can benefit from optimization techniques that effectively route volunteers. Lack of volunteer availability requires Meals on Wheels to maintain a waiting list for people who require meals but cannot be incorporated into the current delivery schedule. The consistency of delivery routes is also of concern, as there are service and operational benefits gained when volunteers …

Aquatic Invertebrate Biomass And Community Composition In Greentree Reservoirs And Naturally Flooded Forests In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley And Interior Flatwoods, Justyn Richard Foth
Theses and Dissertations
The Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) contained vast bottomland hardwood forests into the 20th century. Humans cleared forests, and altered hydrology, yet the MAV remains important for North American waterfowl and other wildlife. To estimate standing crops of aquatic invertebrates as food in hardwood bottomlands for wintering waterfowl, I quantified dry mass of invertebrates in naturally flooded forests (NFFs) and greentree reservoirs (GTRs) during winters 2008–2010. The MAV had greater invertebrate mass in NFFs (x̄ = 18.39 kg/ha; SE = 2.815 [CV = 15.3%]) than GTRs (x̄ = 5.16; SE = 0.492 [CV = 9.5%]), compared with lesser masses in Mississippi …

The Evaluation Of Distillers Dried Grains With Solubles (Ddgs) As An Alternative Feed Ingredient In Poultry Diets, Robert Earl Loar
Theses and Dissertations
In times of economic hardship, everyone must find ways to adapt, and the poultry industry is no exception. The majority of the cost in an integrated poultry operation is feeding the birds. Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) has been around for decades as a by-product of the beverage industry and more recently as a co-product of the ethanol industry. Over the past decade, there has been a dramatic increase in the production of DDGS from U.S. ethanol biorefineries, making the co-product a very economical choice. DDGS have not held a common place in the poultry industry for long though, …
Nestling Provisioning Of Dickcissels In Native Warm-Season Grass Field Buffers, Kristina Lynne Baker
Nestling Provisioning Of Dickcissels In Native Warm-Season Grass Field Buffers, Kristina Lynne Baker
Theses and Dissertations
Grassland birds must have accessible, nutritional prey for nestlings which Conservation Reserve Program practices like CP33—Habitat Buffers for Upland Birds may provide. In 2008—2009, I monitored dickcissel nests in and around CP33 buffers at a farm in north-central Mississippi using video cameras to capture provisioning activities. I simultaneously observed foraging flights and measured distances traveled from nests. Orthopterans were the most commonly chosen prey, and dickcissels brought larger prey items when chicks were older. But, other changes in provisioning were not significantly related to nest age as I hypothesized. Also contrary to my initial hypotheses, provisioning at nests within buffers …

Clinical islet transplantation is a promising treatment for type 1 diabetes. It involves the transplantation of pancreatic islets, isolated from a donor, into the portal vein of a recipient in order to replace his/her dysfunctional islets. Though promising, islet implantation into the liver is greatly hindered by numerous problems, including mechanical stresses, inflammatory responses, exposure to high drug and toxin loads, as well as irretrievability. In order to address these concerns, investigation into alternative implant sites, such as the subcutaneous site, has intensified. Transplantation of islets within these extrahepatic sites is commonly met with three primary obstacles: 1) inadequate spatial …
