Publications and Research

Background: Patients with delirium and dementia admitted to general hospitals have poor outcomes, and their carers report poor experiences. We developed an acute geriatric medical ward into a specialist Medical and Mental Health Unit over an eighteen month period. Additional specialist mental health staff were employed, other staff were trained in the ‘person-centred’ dementia care approach, a programme of meaningful activity was devised, the environment adapted to the needs of people with cognitive impairment, and attention given to communication with family carers. We hypothesise that patients managed on this ward will have better outcomes than those receiving standard care, and …

Watch What You Eat: From Self-Surveillance To Affective Eating, Constance Calice May 2011

Watch What You Eat: From Self-Surveillance To Affective Eating, Constance Calice

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

How is it that Americans are so obsessed with nutrition and dieting and yet remain unhealthy? This project attempts to give a theoretically driven answer to this great paradox within the Western diet. Constance Calice analyzes the practice and rhetoric of dieting as a crystallization of a problematic relationship to food using a Foucauldian understanding of discipline. Using examples from the media, she illustrates the way in which outside forces effect our food choices and the power relationships formed in this exchange. To offer an alternative view to nutritionism she looks to the Local Food Movement and affect theory to …

Assessment Of Prenatal Care And Perinatal Outcomes In Kasigau, Kenya, Allison Smith May 2011

Assessment Of Prenatal Care And Perinatal Outcomes In Kasigau, Kenya, Allison Smith

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The World Health Organization (WHO) implemented the Millennium Declaration in 2000 to establish global health goals to be achieved by 2015. Two of these Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) are directly related to maternal, neonatal and child health. Healthcare during the prenatal period can help achieve the WHO MDG’s for maternal health and child mortality. Evidence has shown that women in Kenya have limited access to prenatal care. This study focused on the prenatal care and postnatal outcome trends of the women in Kasigau, Kenya. Participants were surveyed in three villages (Rukanga, Makwasinyi, and Bhuguta) to determine if prenatal care was …

Parent-Child Communication About Substance Use: Experiences Of Latino Emerging Adults, Kathryn Reid-Quiñones May 2011

Parent-Child Communication About Substance Use: Experiences Of Latino Emerging Adults, Kathryn Reid-Quiñones

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current studies was to identify messages that Latino parents communicate to their offspring about the use of legal and illegal drugs and to determine associations between parental messages and substance use outcomes. Previous research has identified parent-child communication as protective against tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use. However, most of these studies have failed to examine the specific messages communicated and those that have focused almost exclusively on non-Hispanic Caucasians. Study 1 identified messages that Latino parents communicate to their offspring regarding legal and illegal drugs through two focus groups with Latino college students (N = …

A Portable Miniaturized Metabolic Gas Analysis System, Tammy Anderson, Joseph Orr May 2011

A Portable Miniaturized Metabolic Gas Analysis System, Tammy Anderson, Joseph Orr

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Previously we proposed construction of a miniaturized metabolic monitor that could be taken aboard the space station to monitor the physiological response of the body in a microgravity environment. The prototype consisted of an on airway non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) CO2 sensor and a luminescence quenching O2 sensor to measure gas concentrations, and differential pressure ports to measure gas flows. Our motivations, prototype design considerations, and initial experiments were presented in a previous paper.1 This paper aims to further examine the efficacy of the prototype device through 1) characterization of the flow profile by using a discharge coefficient, and 2) validation …

Habits And Lifestyles Of Successfully Aging Women In A Rural Area, Julia L. Sheffler May 2011

Habits And Lifestyles Of Successfully Aging Women In A Rural Area, Julia L. Sheffler

Honors Theses

Older adults in rural areas have unique challenges to maintain well-being.  The goal of this project was to examine those unique factors related to successful aging in a sample of older women living in a rural area in the Midwest using both quantitative and qualitative methods.  Mental and physical health, personality traits, cognitive abilities (i.e., working memory, vocabulary and attention), and activity levels were assessed.  A semi-structured interview using a life narrative approach was also used to explore habits, family relationships and lifestyles over the past 20 years.  The women were administered the following measures: 1) Big Five Factor Personality …

Nrt1 And Tna1-Independent Export Of Nad+ Precursor Vitamins Promotes Nad+ Homeostasis And Allows Engineering Of Vitamin Production, Peter Belenky, Rebecca Stebbins, Katrina L. Bogan, Charles R. Evans, Charles Brenner May 2011

Nrt1 And Tna1-Independent Export Of Nad+ Precursor Vitamins Promotes Nad+ Homeostasis And Allows Engineering Of Vitamin Production, Peter Belenky, Rebecca Stebbins, Katrina L. Bogan, Charles R. Evans, Charles Brenner

Dartmouth Scholarship

NAD+ is both a co-enzyme for hydride transfer enzymes and a substrate of sirtuins and other NAD+ consuming enzymes. NAD+ biosynthesis is required for two different regimens that extend lifespan in yeast. NAD+ is synthesized from tryptophan and the three vitamin precursors of NAD+: nicotinic acid, nicotinamide and nicotinamide riboside. Supplementation of yeast cells with NAD+ precursors increases intracellular NAD+ levels and extends replicative lifespan. Here we show that both nicotinamide riboside and nicotinic acid are not only vitamins but are also exported metabolites. We found that the deletion of the nicotinamide …

Erosion Potential Of The Main Branch Of The Piedras Marcadas Watershed, Petroglyph National Monument, New Mexico, Elaine S. Brouillard May 2011

Erosion Potential Of The Main Branch Of The Piedras Marcadas Watershed, Petroglyph National Monument, New Mexico, Elaine S. Brouillard

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Piedras Marcadas Watershed covers approximately 6 square miles west of the Rio Grande in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This watershed is semi-arid and has arroyos, ephemeral streams that empty into a retaining dam. During the fall of 1998, eleven erosion pins and bridges were placed to record the sediment eroded or aggraded. The erosion pins recorded erosion in a range of 0.05 to 4 mm erosion and aggradation of 2 to 10 mm. The erosion bridges recorded erosion in a range of 3 to 9 mm and 1.5 to 10.7 mm ranges of aggradation. Two modified universal soil loss equations …

Video Game Theatre, A Willoughby May 2011

Video Game Theatre, A Willoughby

Theses and Dissertations

Video games are becoming the fastest growing and most lucrative form of entertainment across the globe. The goal of this project was to take gaming to the next level; to the theatre. I have devised an original piece of theatre using the CIC’s of video gaming: Creativity, Interaction, and Community and put on a production from members of the VCU community. Aside from the project, I have detailed why video games are growing in popularity at an alarming rate and why they belong in the category of ‘Art.’ With new technology and new stories being told, the gaming industry is …

Administrative Censoring In Ecological Analyses Of Autism And A Bayesian Solution, Scott M. Bartell, Thomas A. Lewandowski May 2011

Administrative Censoring In Ecological Analyses Of Autism And A Bayesian Solution, Scott M. Bartell, Thomas A. Lewandowski

Publications and Research

Widely cited ecological analyses of autism have reported associations with mercury emissions, with precipitation, and race at the level of counties or school districts. However, state educational agencies often suppress any low numerical autism counts before releasing data—a phenomenon known as “administrative censoring.” Previous analyses did not describe appropriate methods for censored data analysis; common substitution or exclusion methods are known to introduce bias and produce artificially narrow confidence intervals. We apply a Bayesian censored random effects Poisson model to reanalyze associations between 2001 Toxic Release Inventory reported mercury emissions and 2000-2001 autism counts in Texas. Relative risk estimates for …

Quorum Sensing In Archaea, Charles Mackin May 2011

Quorum Sensing In Archaea, Charles Mackin

Honors Scholar Theses

Bacteria coordinate cell density dependent behaviors by communicating through chemical intermediaries in a process called quorum sensing. In a bacterial culture, individual cells will constitutively produce signal molecules, termed autoinducers, and export them into the environment. When the concentration of autoinducers reaches a threshold, the cells sense that they are in a specific situation, which requires the upregulation of certain genes. This upregulation causes the bacteria to produce proteins that allow them to take part in a coordinated population-wide behavior.

In bacteria that are naturally competent, or capable of importing DNA from the environment, the expression of competence genes is …
