Connected Substitutes And Invertibility Of Demand, Steven T. Berry, Amit Gandhi, Philip A. Haile Jun 2011

Connected Substitutes And Invertibility Of Demand, Steven T. Berry, Amit Gandhi, Philip A. Haile

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We consider the invertibility of a nonparametric nonseparable demand system. Invertibility of demand is important in several contexts, including identification of demand, estimation of demand, testing of revealed preference, and economic theory requiring uniqueness of market clearing prices. We introduce the notion of “connected substitutes” and show that this structure is sufficient for invertibility. The connected substitutes conditions require weak substitution between all goods and sufficient strict substitution to necessitate treating them in a single demand system. These conditions are satisfied in many standard models, have transparent economic interpretation, and allow us to show invertibility without functional form restrictions, smoothness …

“Connected Substitutes And Invertibility Of Demand, Steven T. Berry, Amit Gandhi, Philip A. Haile

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We consider the invertibility (injectivity) of a nonparametric nonseparable demand system. Invertibility of demand is important in several contexts, including identification of demand, estimation of demand, testing of revealed preference, and economic theory exploiting existence of an inverse demand function or (in an exchange economy) uniqueness of Walrasian equilibrium prices. We introduce the notion of “connected substitutes” and show that this structure is sufficient for invertibility. The connected substitutes conditions require weak substitution between all goods and sufficient strict substitution to necessitate treating them in a single demand system. The connected substitutes conditions have transparent economic interpretation, are easily checked, …

The Prevalence And Factors Associated With Nonadherence With Arv Treatment And Cotrimoxazole Preventive Therapy Among Hiv Infected Adolescents Attending Out-Patient Hiv Clinics In Kenya, Reson Marima Jun 2011

The Prevalence And Factors Associated With Nonadherence With Arv Treatment And Cotrimoxazole Preventive Therapy Among Hiv Infected Adolescents Attending Out-Patient Hiv Clinics In Kenya, Reson Marima

Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: There is an increase in the burden of HIV infected adolescents, both those perinatally infected as well as those acquiring HIV during adolescence. Female adolescents continue to be at the highest risk for acquiring HIV; in many Southern African countries, they have a three fold risk of acquiring HIV compared to their male counterparts. Adherence to treatment among adolescents has been shown to range between 30-70%, which is unacceptably low for antiretroviral therapy (ART). Psychosocial wellbeing and social support have been shown to be possible contributing factors to adherence to ART. This relationship has not been previously evaluated among …

Developing Resistance To Aflatoxin In Maize And Cottonseed, Jeffrey W. Cary, Kanniah Rajasekaran, Robert L. Brown, Meng Luo, Zhi Yuan Chen, Deepak Bhatnagar Jun 2011

Developing Resistance To Aflatoxin In Maize And Cottonseed, Jeffrey W. Cary, Kanniah Rajasekaran, Robert L. Brown, Meng Luo, Zhi Yuan Chen, Deepak Bhatnagar

Faculty Publications

At this time, no ''magic bullet'' for solving the aflatoxin contamination problem in maize and cottonseed has been identified, so several strategies must be utilized simultaneously to ensure a healthy crop, free of aflatoxins. The most widely explored strategy for the control of aflatoxin contamination is the development of preharvest host resistance. This is because A. flavus infects and produces aflatoxins in susceptible crops prior to harvest. In maize production, the host resistance strategy has gained prominence because of advances in the identification of natural resistance traits. However, native resistance in maize to aflatoxin contamination is polygenic and complex and, …

The prevalence of hypertension in African Americans (AAs) is higher than in other US groups; yet, few have performed genome-wide association studies (GWASs) in AA. Among people of European descent, GWASs have identified genetic variants at 13 loci that are associated with blood pressure. It is unknown if these variants confer susceptibility in people of African ancestry. Here, we examined genome-wide and candidate gene associations with systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) using the Candidate Gene Association Resource (CARe) consortium consisting of 8591 AAs. Genotypes included genome-wide singlenucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data utilizing the Affymetrix 6.0 array with …

Projecting Climate Change Effects On Forest Net Primary Productivity In Subtropical Louisiana, Usa, Fugui Wang, Y. Jun Xu, Thomas J. Dean

Faculty Publications

This study projected responses of forest net primary productivity (NPP) to three climate change scenarios at a resolution of 5 km × 5 km across the state of Louisiana, USA. In addition, we assessed uncertainties associated with the NPP projection at the grid and state levels. Climate data of the scenarios were derived from Community Climate System Model outputs. Changes in annual NPP between 2000 and 2050 were projected with the forest ecosystem model PnET-II. Results showed that forest productivity would increase under climate change scenarios A1B and A2, but with scenario B1, it would peak during 2011-2020 and then …

The Freedom Of Health, Abigail R. Moncrieff Jun 2011

The Freedom Of Health, Abigail R. Moncrieff

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This Article first draws out the freedom of health from Supreme Court precedent and demonstrates that, like other substantive constitutional rights, the freedom of health is a negative liberty that must be balanced against legitimate and compelling regulatory projects. The Article then applies that understanding of the freedom to evaluate some proposed and actual health care regulations that have made headline news in the last decade. I consider the constitutionality of the phantom death panels, the HlNl vaccine distribution program, the FDA's restrictions on access to experimental drugs, PPACA's obesity and smoking regulations, and, of course, PPACA's individual mandate. Should …

Chronic Disease Self-Management Programs: Relevance For Persons With Dementia, Nina M. Silverstein, Alison S. Gottlieb

Gerontology Institute Publications

The context for this study is the work of the Healthy Brain Initiative. The CDC has established a cooperative agreement with the Alzheimer’s Association to develop and implement a multifaceted approach to look at cognitive health as a public health issue. Late in 2010, the Association commissioned a review of the major chronic disease prevention programs from a systems approach to begin to understand the source of findings that Medicare beneficiaries with Alzheimer’s and related disorders are much higher cost than those simply with a single chronic disease and no AD. This led to the conclusion that Chronic Disease Self‐Management …

Vaccination Of Horses, Rebecca Bott Jun 2011

Vaccination Of Horses, Rebecca Bott

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

A comprehensive health plan for horses includes vaccinations. Vaccinating a horse prepares its immune system to recognize and diminish the effects of a spe¬cific disease. Vaccines are not 100% effective in disease prevention or management, yet vaccinations can be very beneficial in guarding a horse against illness if the horse is in good general health. Management of overall health in conjunction with a vaccination program is the most effective way to ensure the health of your horse. While vaccinating your horses will help protect them in the event of local disease outbreak, vaccinations alone are not an effective health plan; …

The Effect Of Dietary Inclusion Of Category 3 Animal By-Product Meals On Rainbow Trout (O. Mykiss Walbaum) Mineralised Tissues And Immune Function., Matthew Alun Griffiths Owen

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Aquaculture is growing rapidly worldwide and is projected to become the major source of fish used for human consumption. A major factor that limits aquaculture reaching its full potential is an adequate supply of the raw materials necessary for formulated fish feeds. The dependence of modern aquaculture on fishmeal obtained from wild fisheries is not environmentally sustainable and replacements for fishmeal must be found. Some animal by-products are viable replacements for fishmeal, and can provide sufficent nutrition for high growth rates, but little is known about the potential of animal by-products to adversely affect fish health. The objectives of these …

The Eyes That Blind Us: The Overlooked Phenomenon Of Trafficking Into The Agricultural Sector, Shelley Cavalieri Jun 2011

The Eyes That Blind Us: The Overlooked Phenomenon Of Trafficking Into The Agricultural Sector, Shelley Cavalieri

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article offers an analysis of American anti-trafficking legislation. It documents the level of American preoccupation with trafficking for sex work by using existing data from the Department of Justice to demonstrate just how current anti-trafficking efforts focus their attention on trafficking for sex work, to the detriment of trafficking into other labor sectors. The author offers a critique of this overemphasis, observing how the expectations of the individuals involved in enforcing anti-trafficking laws influence what kinds of cases they consider to be trafficking cases. The article also offers a few modest interventions that might help reallocate some of the …

Effects Of Hypo And Iso - Tonic Intravenous Maintenance Fluids On Plasma Sodium Level In Hospitalized Children. A Double Blind Randomized Clinical Trial, Ismail Ahmed Jun 2011

Effects Of Hypo And Iso - Tonic Intravenous Maintenance Fluids On Plasma Sodium Level In Hospitalized Children. A Double Blind Randomized Clinical Trial, Ismail Ahmed

Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: Hypotonic fluids are widely used in pediatrics and are the standard of care when giving maintenance fluids. However, there are several reports of risk of iatrogenic hyponatremia attributed to this practice in the literature. There is therefore uncertainty as to whether isotonic fluids would be the more appropriate fluid. Objectives: The primary objective was to compare effects of hypotonic and isotonic maintenance fluids on plasma sodium levels in children between the ages of 2 months and 15 years admitted at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH). The secondary objective was to compare effects of hypotonic and isotonic maintenance fluids on …

Food & Shelter: Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Developments In California And Access To Grocery Stores, Darci Coleen Palmer Jun 2011

Food & Shelter: Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Developments In California And Access To Grocery Stores, Darci Coleen Palmer

Master's Theses

Since the mid-century proliferation of public housing, policy makers and environmental justice advocates have exposed the fact that geographically and economically isolated public housing sites are ultimately detrimental to residents and communities. In recent years, more progressive housing policies have emphasized the importance of site location in the success of housing programs. This study explores the intersection of affordable housing policy and “food desert” research, by assessing the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program in California, with specific attention to the grocery store category within the Site Amenities section. Since the inception of the LIHTC program in 1986, the California …

Adaptive Significance Of Natural Variations In Maternal Care In Rats: A Translational Perspective, Annaliese K. Beery, Darlene D. Francis Jun 2011

Adaptive Significance Of Natural Variations In Maternal Care In Rats: A Translational Perspective, Annaliese K. Beery, Darlene D. Francis

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

A wealth of data from the last fifty years documents the potency of early life experiences including maternal care on developing offspring. A majority of this research has focused on the developing stress axis and stress-sensitive behaviors in hopes of identifying factors impacting resilience and risk-sensitivity. The power of early life experience to shape later development is profound and has the potential to increase fitness of individuals for their environments. Current findings in a rat maternal care paradigm highlight the complex and dynamic relation between early experiences and a variety of outcomes. In this review we propose adaptive hypotheses for …

Dna Repair Of 8-Oxo-7,8-Dihydroguanine Lesions In Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Leroy G. Henry Jr. Jun 2011

Dna Repair Of 8-Oxo-7,8-Dihydroguanine Lesions In Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Leroy G. Henry Jr.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The persistence of Porphyromonas gingivalis in the inflammatory environment of the periodontal pocket requires an ability to overcome oxidative stress. DNA damage is a major consequence of oxidative stress. Unlike other organisms, a non-base excision repair mechanism for the removal of 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxoG) in P. gingivalis was suggested. Because the uvrB gene is known to be important in nucleotide excision repair, the role of this gene in the repair of oxidative stress-induced DNA damage was investigated. A 3.1 kb fragment containing the uvrB gene was PCR-amplified from the chromosomal DNA of P. gingivalis W83. This gene was insertionally inactivated using …
