Impact Of Age On Outcome After Colorectal Cancer Surgery In The Elderly - A Developing Country Perspective, M. R. Khan, Hassaan Bari, Syed Nabeel Zafar, Syed Ahsan Raza
Department of Surgery Docs
Background:Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major source of morbidity and mortality in the elderly population and surgery is often the only definitive management option. The suitability of surgical candidates based on age alone has traditionally been a source of controversy. Surgical resection may be considered detrimental in the elderly solely on the basis of advanced age. Based on recent evidence suggesting that age alone is not a predictor of outcomes, Western societies are increasingly performing definitive procedures on the elderly. Such evidence is not available from our region. We aimed to determine whether age has an independent effect on …

Quality Assessment Of Weathervane Scallop (Patinopecten Caurinus) And Purple-Hinge Rock Scallop (Crassadoma Gigantea) From Alaska, Kathryn A. Brenner
Fisheries
In Alaska, the Pacific weathervane scallop (Patinopecten caurinus) is the only species commercially harvested. In the Eastern Gulf of Alaska, harvesters report occurrences of poor quality and difficult to market scallops from some fishing areas, designating the product 'weak meat' scallops. The purple-hinge rock scallop (PHRS, Crassadoma gigantea), has aquaculture potential. A recent grow-out study in Alaska was promising, verifying this potential. Our goal was to assess the quality of Alaskan scallops using physical and chemical analyses to understand the perceived differences in meat quality. 'Weak meat' (WS) and standard quality (SS) whole weathervane scallops from Yakutat, two batches of …

Growth Physiology Of Juvenile Red King Crab, Paralithodes Camtschaticus, In Alaska, Miranda J. Westphal
Fisheries
Lack of recovery, following collapse of the Alaskan red king crab, Paralithodes camtschaticus, fishery, has prompted research directed towards rehabilitating the species. To better inform rehabilitation efforts aimed at increasing survival and growth of P. camtschaticus in their first year of life, I compared individual growth of hatchery-raised and wild-caught juvenile crabs in the laboratory and then compared both sets of laboratory individuals with cohorts from the field. To understand molt cycles, hemolymph was collected from age-0 and age-3 crabs to quantify circulating molting hormones (ecdysteroids) and the duration of premolt. Size, growth increment, molt interval, and cumulative molt interval …
Bats Of The Western Indian Ocean Islands, John O'Brien
Bats Of The Western Indian Ocean Islands, John O'Brien
KIP Articles
The natural colonisation of many remote oceanic islands by bats, including those of the western Indian Ocean, has been facilitated by their unique capability among mammals for powered flight. In the western Indian Ocean region, only the Malagasy islands of Madagascar and the Comoros archipelago have been naturally colonised by non-volant mammals. Despite their greater potential for inter-island dispersal, and thus gene transfer, endemicity of Chiroptera in the western Indian Ocean islands is high. Given their vulnerability to stochastic and anthropogenic disturbances, greater focus needs to be placed on investigating the demographic and ecological history of bats on Western Indian …

Plant-feeding insects have been recently found to use microbes to manipulate host plant physiology and morphology. Gall midges are one of the largest groups of insects that manipulate host plants extensively. Hessian fly (HF, Mayetiola destructor) is an important pest of wheat and a model system for studying gall midges. To examine the role of bacteria in parasitism, a systematic analysis of bacteria associated with HF was performed for the first time. Diverse bacteria were found in different developmental HF stages. Fluorescent in situhybridization detected a bacteriocyte-like structure in developing eggs. Bacterial DNA was also detected in eggs …

Physiological Trade-Offs In Self-Maintenance: Plumage Molt And Stress Physiology In Birds, Jamie M. Cornelius, Nicole Perfito, Richard Zann, Creagh W. Breuner, Thomas P. Hahn
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Trade-offs between self-maintenance processes can affect life-history evolution. Integument replacement and the stress response both promote self-maintenance and affect survival in vertebrates. Relationships between the two processes have been studied most extensively in birds, where hormonal stress suppression is down regulated during molt in seasonal species, suggesting a resource-based trade-off between the two processes. The only species found to differ are the rock dove and Eurasian tree sparrow, at least one of which performs a very slow molt that may reduce resource demands during feather growth, permitting investment in the stress response. To test for the presence of a molt–stress …

Water Molecules: A Closer Look At Their Behavior At Protein-Protein Interfaces And Their Contributions To The Docked Model Of Pyridoxal Kinase - Serine Hydroxymethyltransferase Complex, Mostafa H. Ahmed
Theses and Dissertations
The work in this thesis is divided into two aims. The first aim is to provide a detailed analysis of water molecules at protein-protein interfaces as well as quantifying their contributions with respect to different residue types. To achieve this aim a data set of 4741 water molecules abstracted from 179 high-resolution (≤ 2.30 Å) X-ray crystal structures of protein-protein complexes was analyzed with a suite of modeling tools based on HINT. The second aim is to observe the effect of adding interfacial water molecules in developing a model for the protein-protein interaction between pyridoxal kinase and serine hydroxymethyltransferase. This …

Then, the 15% sucrose and 0.500% proline in the MNH solution produced good alcohol content in a carbon …
Effect Of Pre-Drying Handling On Quality Of Final Dried Bombay Duck (Harpodon Neherius), Krishna Prasad Nooralabettu
Effect Of Pre-Drying Handling On Quality Of Final Dried Bombay Duck (Harpodon Neherius), Krishna Prasad Nooralabettu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Proliferation of spoilage microorganisms during preprocessing delay, with associated deteriorative changes in non-protein nitrogenous substances and lipids, and its impact of the sensory characteristics of the final dried products were studied. Bombay duck was judged as unfit for human consumption beyond 8 hrs of exposure at 28°C. However, chilling the fish to 0°C or salting the fish after gutting at 28°C or drying at 45°C without delay effectively reduced the proliferation of spoilage microorganisms, and associated biochemical and sensory characteristics during drying. Higher levels of proteolytic and lipolytic bacterial load, free fatty acids, trimethylamine and total volatile bases due to …

Anti-Cancer Effects Of Polysaccharide And Phycocyanin From Porphyra Yezoensis, Lu-Xi Zhang, Chun-Er Cai, Ting-Ting Guo, Jia-Wen Gu, Hong-Li Xu, Yun Zhou, Yuan Wang, Cheng-Chu Liu, Pei-Min He
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper, phycocyanin and one component (PY-D2) in polysaccharide were obtained from Porphyra yezoensis to study for their potential anti-tumor effects. MTT proliferation assays showed that, at concentration of 500 mg/L for 72 h, PY-D2 treatment significantly inhibited the growth of four tumor cell lines, HO-8910, MCF-7, K562 and SMMC-7721, with the respective inhibition rates of 21.2%, 23.6%, 19.8%, and 21%. Flow cytometry analysis indicated that the anti-tumor effect of PY-D2 was associated with the cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 or G2/M check-points. Two cancer cell lines, Hep-2 and A375 were treated by different concentrations of phycocyanin, followed by …

Shaken Baby Syndrome As A Form Of Abusive Head Trauma, Muna Al-Saadoon, Ibtisam B. Elnour, Anuradha
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is a form of abuse that is characterised by brain injury. Because of the subtle and yet debilitating neurobehavioural impairment which ensues, SBS represents a diagnostic dilemma for attending clinicians. The situation is made worse by the young age of the affected child who may not be capable of explaining what happened. SBS has been reported in many parts of the world. To our knowledge, there is a dearth of literature on the topic from Arab/Islamic countries. This article attempts to shed light on the syndrome by reviewing information on the aetiology of SBS, as well …

Dietary Triglycerides Profoundly Affect Oral Sensitization To Peanut Protein In An Adjuvant-Free Mouse Model Of Peanut Allergy, Erik Eckhardt, Jianing Li
Internal Medicine Presentations
Peanuts and peanut butter contain significant amounts of long-chain triglycerides (LCT), which stimulate lymphatic chylomicron transport. We have recently reported that intestinal absorption of a dietary antigen (ovalbumin; (OVA)) is significantly enhanced when chylomicron formation is induced. This prompted us to investigate the effect of LCT on oral sensitization to concomitantly ingested protein antigens.

Maternal Investment By Yellowstone Pronghorn Following Winter Habitat Deterioration, Kerey K. Barnowe-Meyer, P. J. White, John A. Byers
Maternal Investment By Yellowstone Pronghorn Following Winter Habitat Deterioration, Kerey K. Barnowe-Meyer, P. J. White, John A. Byers
Western North American Naturalist
Spring and summer–autumn nutrition are the prime determinants of reproductive investment in most largeherbivore populations, though winter severity is known to affect reproductive rates in some situations. To evaluate the effects of a long-term decline in winter habitat quality, a diet shift away from sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) during winter, and differential habitat selection during spring–autumn on pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) reproduction, we assessed female and fawn condition, maternal investment, and early fawn survival in migrant and nonmigrant portions of the Yellowstone pronghorn population in Montana and Wyoming during 1999–2001. Mean female mass at capture in late winter (46.81 …

Comparative Ecology Of Sarcobatus Baileyi And Sarcobatus Vermiculatus In Eastern California, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, Alynn M. Martin, Molly R. Falasco, James H. Richards
Western North American Naturalist
Greasewood (Sarcobatus) is a succulent-leaved, halophytic shrub of North American origin. The genus comprises 2 species: Sarcobatus baileyi and Sarcobatus vermiculatus.Sarcobatus vermiculatus is common throughout much of western North America, but S. baileyi is much more limited in distribution and was previously thought to be endemic to Nevada. Here we document and describe a S. baileyi population in eastern California, comparing its morphology and ecology to an adjacent S. vermiculatus population. Morphologically, S. baileyi is smaller in stature but produces larger seeds; however, fewer S. baileyi seeds germinated and survived a 20-day laboratory incubation compared to seeds …
