Atypical Clinical And Diagnostic Features In Ménétrier's Disease In A Child, Michael Chung, Jaime Pittenger, Deborah Flomenhoft, Jeffrey Bennett, Eun Young Lee, Harohalli Shashidhar

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Ménétrier's disease is one of the rarest protein-losing gastropathies in childhood. It is characterized clinically by non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms and edema, biochemically by hypoalbuminemia, and pathologically by enlarged gastric folds. In adults, this disease can be devastating with significant morbidity and mortality. In childhood, it is a self-limiting, transient and benign illness. Its treatment is largely supportive with total parenteral nutrition (TPN) while oral intake is encouraged. Acute onset of vomiting in healthy school age children can be initially explained by acute viral gastroenteritis. However, persistent vomiting associated with hematemesis and severe abdominal pain should warrant further work-up. This case …

Composition Of Suspended And Benthic Particulate Matter In The Tidal Freshwater James River, Anne Schlegel Sep 2011

Composition Of Suspended And Benthic Particulate Matter In The Tidal Freshwater James River, Anne Schlegel

Theses and Dissertations

Investigating linkages between the compositions of suspended (seston) and benthic particulate matter is important to the understanding of organic matter (OM) cycling and nutrient retention in aquatic systems. We compared the quantity and quality of the truly suspended (TS) and settleable (SB) fractions of seston as well as benthic particulate matter in the tidal freshwater James River, Virginia. The mass of seston and OM was consistently higher in the TS fraction compared to the SB fraction. OM was preferentially retained in the TS fraction relative to seston. The proportional contribution of OM constituents (chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen) …

Peninsula Medical School

Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterised by loss of motor neurons leading to severe weakness and death from respiratory failure within 3-5 years. Riluzole prolongs survival in ALS. A published report has suggested a dramatic effect of lithium carbonate on survival. 44 patients were studied, with 16 randomly selected to take LiCO3 and riluzole and 28 allocated to take riluzole alone. In the group treated with lithium, no patients had died (i.e., 100% survival) at the end of the study (15 months from entry), compared to 71% surviving in the riluzole-only group. Although the …

Noxious Stimuli Sensitivity In Regular Spicy Food Users And Non-Users: Comparison Of Visual Analog And General Labeled Magnitude Scaling, Mary-Jon Ludy, Richard D. Mattes

Public and Allied Health Faculty Publications

The visual analog scale (VAS) and the general labeled magnitude scale (gLMS) are common response formats for assessing chemosensory sensation. The gLMS is recommended when comparing sensations between individuals whose perceptual experiences vary in a manner that may not be accurately captured on the VAS. This may occur when one group has a wider range of perceived intensity (e.g., bitterness in 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) tasters and non-tasters). The purpose of this study was to compare responses generated by the VAS and the gLMS following exposure to chemical, thermal, tactile, and auditory stimuli at intensity levels encountered in daily activities. Subjects were …

Tanf In Rural America: Informing Re-Authorization, Leif Jensen, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Jessica A. Bean Sep 2011

Tanf In Rural America: Informing Re-Authorization, Leif Jensen, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Jessica A. Bean

Carsey Publications

In 1996 welfare reform ushered in a new era in which cash assistance for poor parents became both temporary and conditional on activities to promote economic independence through work. Cash assistance from TANF relieves, but does not eliminate, poverty because benefit levels are far too low to lift families above the poverty threshold. These ameliorative effects are weaker in rural than urban areas. Over time, the positive impacts of TANF receipt have continued to decline. The authors assert that the necessity of re-authorizing TANF gives us an opportunity to reflect on its strengths and limitations.

Corn, Brianne Sherwood, Amanda Hawks Sep 2011

Corn, Brianne Sherwood, Amanda Hawks

USU Student Organic Farm Newsletter

We have so much corn right now it's coming out of our ears (great pun, right?). And it's SO incredibly cheap! This is probably because the US produces 42% of the world's corn! Most of it is used for animal feed, but other uses include exporting to other countries, human food, seed, and industrial uses such as ethanol production. Because there is so much corn available here in the U.S. You can find it in a lot more foods than you think. It's in peanut butter, snack foods, soft drinks, multivitamins, ketchup, mustard, ground beef, and frozen yogurt just to …

Aebp2 As An Epigenetic Regulator For Neural Crest Cells, Hana Kim, Keunsoo Kang, Muhammad B. Ekram, Tae Young Roh, Joomyeong Kim Sep 2011

Aebp2 As An Epigenetic Regulator For Neural Crest Cells, Hana Kim, Keunsoo Kang, Muhammad B. Ekram, Tae Young Roh, Joomyeong Kim

Faculty Publications

Aebp2 is a potential targeting protein for the mammalian Polycomb Repression Complex 2 (PRC2). We generated a mutant mouse line disrupting the transcription of Aebp2 to investigate its in vivo roles. Aebp2-mutant homozygotes were embryonic lethal while heterozygotes survived to adulthood with fertility. In developing mouse embryos, Aebp2 is expressed mainly within cells of neural crest origin. In addition, many heterozygotes display a set of phenotypes, enlarged colon and hypopigmentation, similar to those observed in human patients with Hirschsprung's disease and Waardenburg syndrome. These phenotypes are usually caused by the absence of the neural crest-derived ganglia in hindguts and melanocytes. …

Rhythmic Leptin Is Required For Weight Gain From Circadian Desynchronized Feeding In The Mouse, Deanna M. Arble, Martha H. Vitaterna, Fred W. Turek Sep 2011

Rhythmic Leptin Is Required For Weight Gain From Circadian Desynchronized Feeding In The Mouse, Deanna M. Arble, Martha H. Vitaterna, Fred W. Turek

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The neuroendocrine and metabolic effects of leptin have been extensively researched since the discovery, and the later identification, of the leptin gene mutated within the ob/ob mouse. Leptin is required for optimal health in a number of physiological systems (e.g. fertility, bone density, body weight regulation). Despite the extensive leptin literature and many observations of leptin’s cyclical pattern over the 24-hour day, few studies have specifically examined how the circadian rhythm of leptin may be essential to leptin signaling and health. Here we present data indicating that a rhythmic leptin profile (e.g. 1 peak every 24 hours) leads to excessive …

The Regulation Of Skeletal Muscle Protein Turnover During The Progression Of Cancer Cachexia In The ApcMin/+ Mouse, James P. White, John W. Baynes, Stephen L. Welle, Matthew C. Kostek, Lydia E. Matesic, Shuichi Sato, James A. Carson

Faculty Publications

Muscle wasting that occurs with cancer cachexia is caused by an imbalance in the rates of muscle protein synthesis and degradation. The Apc(Min/+) mouse is a model of colorectal cancer that develops cachexia that is dependent on circulating IL-6. However, the IL-6 regulation of muscle protein turnover during the initiation and progression of cachexia in the Apc(Min/+) mouse is not known. Cachexia progression was studied in Apc(Min/+) mice that were either weight stable (WS) or had initial (≤5%), intermediate (6-19%), or extreme (≥20%) body weight loss. The initiation of cachexia reduced %MPS 19% and a further ∼50% with additional weight …

Health Education In Teacher Education: Evaluation Of Learning Design With Embedded Personal Wellness Learning And Assessment Focus, Zali Yager

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper describes the use of a personal and professional approach to pre-service teacher education that allows trainee teachers to focus on their own wellbeing as well as how they might improve the wellbeing of their future students. ‘Concepts of Wellbeing’ was taught to all Bachelor of Education students and included a wellness curriculum, Social and Emotional Learning, and embedded transformative assessment. Mixed methods evaluation research was used to determine student perceptions of the impact on their learning and wellbeing. The main themes that emerged were that assessment was transformative and seen as important to the student’s learning; and that …

Courtney, Ayman El-Mohandes, Susan M. Blake, Marie G. Gantz, Jutta Thornberry, M. Nabil El-Khorazaty, David Perry, Michele Kiely

Publications and Research

This study sought to examine relationships between depressive symptoms and prenatal smoking and/or household environmental tobacco smoke exposure (HHETSE) among urban minority women. We analyzed private, audio computer-assisted self interview data from a clinic-based sample of 929 minority pregnant women in Washington, DC. Depressive symptoms were assessed via the Beck Depression Inventory Fast Screen. HH-ETSE, current smoking, and former smoking were assessed via self-report. Depression levels and demographic characteristics were compared: (1) among nonsmokers, for those reporting HH-ETSE versus no HH-ETSE; and (2) among smokers, for those reporting current smoking (in last 7 days) versus former smokers. Measures associated with …

In Response: The Biological Basis And Treatment Of Bulimia, Jeffrey M. Jonas, Md Sep 2011

In Response: The Biological Basis And Treatment Of Bulimia, Jeffrey M. Jonas, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

The recent papers in the Jefferson J ournal of Psychiatry by Drs. Levin ("Bulimia as a Masturbatory Equivalent, " July, 1985) and Wilson ("A Discussion of 'Bulimia as a Masturbatory Equivalent'," Winter, 1986) contain a number of theories and recommendations about the etiology and treatment of bulimia which should be addressed. In large measure, both papers present a dynamic view of this disorder. However, psychodynamic formulations are but one of many theories put forward to explain this disorder. Other theories of etiology include notions that bulimia arises from cultural factors and an increased attention to body image, from disorders with …

Of Woman Born? Technology, Relationship, And The Right To A Human Mother, Jennifer S. Hendricks Sep 2011

Of Woman Born? Technology, Relationship, And The Right To A Human Mother, Jennifer S. Hendricks

College of Law Faculty Scholarship

This article explores the legal implications of a scientific fantasy: the fantasy of building artificial wombs that could gestate a human child from conception. It takes as its touchstone a claim by sociologist Barbara Katz Rothman, who writes, “Every human child has a right to a human mother.”

While the article discusses the legal principles that would apply to artificial wombs, it is skeptical about the technological possibility of artificial wombs in the foreseeable future. Accordingly, the focus of the article is the effect that the fantasy of artificial gestation has on the legal discourse around pregnancy and reproduction today. …

The Regulation Of Tonb-Dependent Transporters In Neisseria Gnorrhoeae, Aimee Hollander Sep 2011

The Regulation Of Tonb-Dependent Transporters In Neisseria Gnorrhoeae, Aimee Hollander

Theses and Dissertations

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is an obligate human pathogen that causes the common sexually- transmitted infection, gonorrhea. Gonococcal infections cause significant morbidity, particularly among women, as the organism ascends to the upper reproductive tract, resulting in pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility. Antibiotic resistance rates have risen dramatically, leading to severe restriction of treatment options for gonococcal disease. Gonococcal infections do not elicit protective immunity nor is there an effective vaccine to prevent the disease. Thus, further characterization of expression, function and regulation of surface antigens could lead to better treatment and prevention modalities in the future. N. gonorrhoeae express a …

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), oral health status represents an indicator of the physical and psychological general state of a person, especially among the elderly. Many epidemiological studies have studied oral health among the geriatric population. In Lebanon, the lack of publications related to this subject encouraged us to realize a pilot study in order to evaluate oral health status among a Lebanese geriatric sample from low socioeconomic class. This study was conducted in a volunteer associational center (“Resto du Coeur”), by the Department of ediatric and community dentistry, in collaboration with the Department of prosthodontics of the …
