Diseases And Causes Of Death In European Bats: Dynamics In Disease Susceptibility And Infection Rates, Kristin Mühldorfer, Stephanie Speck, Andreas Kurth
KIP Articles
Bats receive increasing attention in infectious disease studies, because of their well recognized status as reservoir species for various infectious agents. This is even more important, as bats with their capability of long distance dispersal and complex social structures are unique in the way microbes could be spread by these mammalian species. Nevertheless, infection studies in bats are predominantly limited to the identification of specific pathogens presenting a potential health threat to humans. But the impact of infectious agents on the individual host and their importance on bat mortality is largely unknown and has been neglected in most studies published …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Amphiphilic Cyclic Diblock Copolypeptoids From N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Mediated Zwitterionic Polymerization Of N-Substituted N-Carboxyanhydride, Chang Uk Lee, Thomas P. Smart, Li Guo, Thomas H. Epps, Donghui Zhang
Faculty Publications
N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-mediated ring-opening polymerization of N-decyl-N-carboxylanhydride monomer (De-NCA) has been shown to occur in a controlled manner, yielding cyclic poly(N-decylglycine)s (c-PNDGs) with polymer molecular weights (MW) between 4.8 and 31 kg mol -1 and narrow molecular weight distributions (PDI < 1.15). The reaction exhibits pseudo-first-order kinetics with respect to monomer concentration. The polymer MW increases linearly with conversion, consistent with a living polymerization. ESI MS and SEC analyses confirm the cyclic architectures of the forming polymers. DSC and WAXS studies reveal that the c-PNDG homopolymers are highly crystalline with two prominent first-order transitions at 72-79 °C (T m,1) and 166-177 °C (T m,2), which have been attributed to side chain and main chain melting, respectively. A series of amphiphilic cyclic diblock copolypeptoids [i.e., poly(N-methylglycine)-b-poly(N- decylglycine) (c-PNMG-b-PNDG)] with variable molecular weight and composition were synthesized by sequential NHC-mediated polymerization of the corresponding N-methyl-N-carboxyanhydride (Me-NCA) and De-NCA monomers. 1H NMR analysis reveals that adjusting the initial monomer to NHC molar ratio can readily control the block copolymer chain length and composition. Time-lapsed light scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) analyses of c-PNDG-b-PNMG samples showed that the amphiphilic cyclic block copolypeptoids self-assemble into spherical micelles that reorganize into micrometer-long cylindrical micelles with uniform diameter in room temperature methanol over the course of several days. An identical morphological transition has also been noted for the linear analogues, which occurs more rapidly than for the cyclic copolypeptoids. We tentatively attribute this difference to the different crystallization kinetics of the solvophobic block (i.e., PNDG) in the cyclic and linear block copolypeptoids. © 2011 American Chemical Society.

Method For Whisker Formation On Metallic Fibers And Substrates, Sudipta Seal, Weifeng Fei
UCF Patents
A method for whisker formation on the surface of aluminum containing metallic 5 alloy fibers and substrates provides a support structure for many technical, medical and pharmaceutical applications. The novel surface modification of metallic alloy fibers and other metallic substrates involves heating the fiber or substrate in air at temperatures ranging from approximately 800°C to approximately 1000°C for a period of time ranging from approximately 10 hours to approximately 100 hours to form whiskers. The use of a 10 metal oxide coating with large ions, such as zirconium oxide, allows the formation of alumina whiskers while preserving the structural integrity …

Science With A Skew: The Nuclear Power Industry After Chernobyl And Fukushima, Gayle Greene
Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
It is one of the marvels of our time that the nuclear industry managed to resurrect itself from its ruins at the end of the last century, when it crumbled under its costs, inefficiencies, and mega-accidents. Chernobyl released hundreds of times the radioactivity of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs combined, contaminating more than 40% of Europe and the entire Northern Hemisphere. But along came the nuclear lobby to breathe new life into the industry, passing off as “clean” this energy source that polluted half the globe. The “fresh look at nuclear”—in the words of a New York Times makeover piece …

Faculty Publications
A one-dimensional model for the thermal conversion of thermally thick biomass particles is developed for the simulation of the fuel bed of biomass grate furnaces. The model can be applied for cylindrical and spherical particles. The particle is divided into four layers corresponding to the main stages of biomass thermal conversion. The energy and mass conservation equations are solved for each layer. The reactions are assigned to the boundaries. The model can predict the intra-particle temperature gradient, the particle mass loss rate as well as the time-dependent variations of particle size and density, as the most essential features of particle …

Physics
Magnetotactic bacteria contain magnetosomes—intracellular, membrane-bounded, magnetic nanocrystals of magnetite (Fe3O4) or greigite (Fe3S4)—that cause the bacteria to swim along geomagnetic field lines. We isolated a greigite-producing magnetotactic bacterium from a brackish spring in Death Valley National Park, California, USA, strain BW-1, that is able to biomineralize greigite and magnetite depending on culture conditions. A phylogenetic comparison of BW-1 and similar uncultured greigite- and/or magnetite-producing magnetotactic bacteria from freshwater to hypersaline habitats shows that these organisms represent a previously unknown group of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the Deltaproteobacteria. Genomic analysis of BW-1 reveals …

The Role Of Mothers And Media On Emerging Adults’ Religious Faith And Practices By Way Of Internalization Of Prosocial Values, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Larry J. Nelson
Faculty Publications
In the current study, we investigated the role of emerging adults’ internalization of prosocial values as a mediator between maternal relationship quality and two types of media use (positive and negative) and religious faith and practices. Participants included 500 undergraduate students (ranging from 18 to 26 years; 75% European American) from five American universities. Structural equation modeling results indicated that both maternal relationship quality and positive media were related positively and indirectly (by way of prosocial values) to religious faith, and maternal relationship quality was related positively and directly to religious faith. In contrast, negative media use was related negatively …
Exploitation Of Unintentional Information Leakage From Integrated Circuits, William E. Cobb
Exploitation Of Unintentional Information Leakage From Integrated Circuits, William E. Cobb
Theses and Dissertations
Unintentional electromagnetic emissions are used to recognize or verify the identity of a unique integrated circuit (IC) based on fabrication process-induced variations in a manner analogous to biometric human identification. The effectiveness of the technique is demonstrated through an extensive empirical study, with results presented indicating correct device identification success rates of greater than 99:5%, and average verification equal error rates (EERs) of less than 0:05% for 40 near-identical devices. The proposed approach is suitable for security applications involving commodity commercial ICs, with substantial cost and scalability advantages over existing approaches. A systematic leakage mapping methodology is also proposed to …

Pentachlorophenol Decreases Tumor-Cell-Binding Capacity And Cell-Surface Protein Expression Of Human Natural Killer Cells, Tasia Hurd, Jasmine Walker, Margaret M. Whalen
Chemistry Faculty Research
Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is an organochlorine pesticide that decreases the tumor-cell killing (lytic) function of human natural killer (NK) cells. NK cells defend against tumor cells and virally infected cells. They bind to these targets, utilizing a variety of cell-surface proteins. This study examined concentrations of PCP that decrease lytic function for alteration of NK binding to tumor targets. Levels of PCP that caused loss of binding function were then examined for effects on expression of cell-surface proteins needed for binding. Exposure to 10 µm PCP for 24 h (which caused a greater than 70% loss of lytic function) decreased NK …

Informing The Public: An Examination Of Government Press Releases During Thai Political Turbulences, Pimchanok Srijamlong
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine Thai governments' press releases in the National News Bureau of Thailand (NNT) website in two periods. The first period was from September 2005 to September 2006 and the second period was from December 2008 to May 2010. The two Thai governments mostly employed the social division frame in their press releases. There were highly different opinions between the groups of people who were against and those who supported these two governments. In addition, over half of stories had the conflict of interest frame, which showed one of possible reasons the crisis came …

Are You Textually Active?, Kandace Dyson
Student Theses and Dissertations
Given the frequency of text messaging, there has been some concern about whether or not the use of text language among young people has a negative impact on the written form and comprehension of Standard English. Some believe that text language positively influences literacy skills; whereas, others believe that literacy skills are negatively influenced by its use. This study was designed to explore the knowledge of text language among college students enrolled in different levels of English courses and the relationship between text language knowledge and translation of a message written in text language to SE. Participants were asked to …
