It also presents a standard for judging where university support of religious groups violates the Establishment Clause.

Are There Contagion Effects In Information Technology And Business Process Outsourcing?, Arti Mann, Robert J. Kauffman, Kunsoo Han, Barrie R. Nault Nov 2011

Are There Contagion Effects In Information Technology And Business Process Outsourcing?, Arti Mann, Robert J. Kauffman, Kunsoo Han, Barrie R. Nault

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We model the diffusion of IT outsourcing using announcements about IT outsourcing deals. We estimate a lognormal diffusion curve to test whether IT outsourcing follows a pure diffusion process or there are contagion effects involved. The methodology permits us to study the consequences of outsourcing events, especially mega-deals with IT contract amounts that exceed US$1 billion. Mega-deals act, we theorize, as precipitating events that create a strong basis for contagion effects and are likely to affect decision-making by other firms in an industry. Then, we evaluate the role of different communication channels in the diffusion process of IT outsourcing by …

A Brain-Inspired Model Of Hierarchical Planner, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan Nov 2011

A Brain-Inspired Model Of Hierarchical Planner, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hierarchical planning is an approach of planning by composing and executing hierarchically arranged plans to solve some problems. Most symbolic-based hierarchical planners have been devised to allow the knowledge to be described expressively. However, a great challenge is to automatically seek and acquire new plans on the fly. This paper presents a novel neural-based model of hierarchical planning that can seek and acquired new plans on-line if the necessary knowledge are lacking. Inspired by findings in neuropsychology, plans can be inherently learnt, retrieved, and manipulated simultaneously rather than discretely processed like in most symbolic approaches. Using a multi-channel adaptive resonance …

Ten Steps For Conceptualizing And Conducting Qualitative Research Studies In A Pragmatically Curious Manner, Ronald J. Chenail Nov 2011

Ten Steps For Conceptualizing And Conducting Qualitative Research Studies In A Pragmatically Curious Manner, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

In a world of methodological pluralism and mixed-methods, qualitative researchers can take a pathway of pragmatic curiosity by exploring their research interests and the possible design and methodology choices to create studies that not only allow them to pursue their investigative curiosities, but also result in coherent and effective systems of procedural choices. Ten steps are offered for researchers to conceive and conduct qualitative research projects that are both responsive to research goals and objectives and defendable to criteria of quality and critics of utility.

Doctoral Research In Library And Information Science By Pakistani Professionals: An Analysis, Rais Ahmed Samdani, Rubina Bhatti Nov 2011

Doctoral Research In Library And Information Science By Pakistani Professionals: An Analysis, Rais Ahmed Samdani, Rubina Bhatti

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Research is a process of enquiry that draws data from the context in which events occur, in an attempt to describe these occurrences, as a means of determining the process in which events are embedded and the perspectives of those participating in the events, using induction to derive possible explanation based on observed phenomena", Gorman & Clayton (2005).

The creation and dissemination of research is central to the growth of any profession. Library and Information Science is no exemption. A considerable amount of emphasis has been placed by many library experts and professionals towards the creation of research culture among …

Digitization Of Archival Collections In Africa For Scholarly Communication: Issues, Strategies, And Challenges, Brendan Eze Asogwa Nov 2011

Digitization Of Archival Collections In Africa For Scholarly Communication: Issues, Strategies, And Challenges, Brendan Eze Asogwa

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Experience and observations have revealed that most archives and libraries in Africa today are filled with materials recorded in analogue formats and the traditional or analogue librarians and archivists are those who are still carrying out the tasks of acquiring, organizing, and preserving the print documents and helping the readers in locating the information they need.

In developing countries this picture has rapidly changed due to the influence of advances in computer technology. The physical materials are gradually giving way to electronic print, and online public access catalogue (OPAC) is obliterating the needs for users to physically visit the library …

Rural Youth’S Perceptions Of Information Sources And Rural Library Services, Norshila Shaifuddin, Masitah Ahmad, Wan Nor Haliza Wan Mokhtar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

It has been recognized that youth populations are the capital for nation building. According to the Malaysian National Census (2000) about 60% of Malaysian youth (age 15-29) are concentrated in the rural areas. This population as already known is a valuable asset for the successor of country development. They are believed to be the agents of change for economic and social growth of the society. They can play an active role for the development of themselves and their environment. They should be actively involved in giving their expertise and assistance in various fields such as education, business, rural industries and …

Indian Lis Literature In International Journals With Specific Reference To Ssci Database: A Bibliometric Study, Pallab Pradhan, Rajesh Chandrakar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Scholarly communication is the process by which scholars and scientists conduct their research and make that research works and results known to the world. It plays an important role for the advancement of knowledge and a scholar's future prospect. History is the witness about the changing process of scholarly communication from oral representation to written, than to print, and now to the electronic (on-line).

In the formal process of scholarly communication; researchers, basis on the work of others, write up their own research findings and give those research papers essentially without charge to publishers. In turn, publishers manage the peer-review …

Rural Farmers' Problems Accessing Agricultural Information: A Case Study Of Nsukka Local Government Area Of Enugu State, Nigeria, Nnenna A. Obidike

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Rural farmers account for the greater part of the population of any developing country such as Nigeria. Governments of developing countries have a major responsibility of ensuring that there is adequate rural development in their various communities and local governments which would lead to effective and efficient agricultural systems that will not only supply food and animal protein but also foster the utilization of natural resources in a sustainable manner (CGIAR, 1995). When the rural farmers lack access to knowledge and information that would help them achieve maximum agricultural yield, they are not only grope in the dark but are …

A Model For Adoption And Application Of Isbd In Book Publishing In Nigeria, Oshiotse Andrew Okwilagwe Nov 2011

A Model For Adoption And Application Of Isbd In Book Publishing In Nigeria, Oshiotse Andrew Okwilagwe

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Schuman (1995) posits that the publishers are beginning to realize that although they create books, librarians have tremendous power to influence readers. This statement may not totally apply to the situation in Nigeria. This is because the intellectual and commercial processes through which books are written, published and distributed, sold and used have become systematically and rigorously distorted by the unwholesome activities of some of the publishers, government officials and their agencies. The librarians have slim chances to influence readers through a professionally planned collection development policy in Nigeria.

The paths of the publishers and librarians hardly across in Nigeria. …

The School Library As A Foundational Step To Childrens’ Effective Reading Habits, Isaac Oluwadare Busayo Nov 2011

The School Library As A Foundational Step To Childrens’ Effective Reading Habits, Isaac Oluwadare Busayo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Reading is recognized as an art capable of transforming man’s life and his entire society. However, in the state of the World Children Report by (UNICEF,1999), it was stated that nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or write their names. The Hindu newspaper (2004) also put forward that in an age when browsing the net, playing with funky handsets and passing non-stop SMSs seem to be the order of the day, reading a book in a peaceful corner of a library has become an archaic idea for most people. While technology is slowly …

Lecturers’ Perception Of The Adequacy Of Resources And Services Of University Of Ado-Ekiti Library, O. Olajide, F.A. Fabunmi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

University libraries exist to enhance the acquisition of knowledge by their clientele through the provision of reading materials (book and non-book) for the purposes of teaching, learning and research. A university library, according to Mallaiah, Kumbar and Mudhol (2008) occupies the central and primary place in teaching and research, therefore, it has to meet the diverse and growing needs of educational programme at the undergraduate, post–graduate and research levels.

Every tertiary library, including university library, is expected to meet the objectives of the institution that established and funds it. In a similar vein, library, according to Aina (2004) is concerned …

Practicing What They Preach? Lynching And Religion In The American South 1890 - 1929, Amy Kate Bailey, Karen A. Snedker Nov 2011

Practicing What They Preach? Lynching And Religion In The American South 1890 - 1929, Amy Kate Bailey, Karen A. Snedker

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

This project employs a moral solidarity framework to explore the relationship between organized religion and lynching in the American South. The authors ask whether a county’s religious composition affected its rate of lynching, net of demographic and economic controls. The authors find evidence for the solidarity thesis, using three religious metrics. First, their findings show that counties with greater religious diversity experienced more lynching, supporting the notion that a pluralistic religious marketplace with competing religious denominations weakened the bonds of a cohesive moral community and might have enhanced white racial solidarity. Second, counties in which a larger share of the …

Windows Driver Memory Analysis: A Reverse Engineering Methodology, James S. Okolica, Gilbert L. Peterson Nov 2011

Windows Driver Memory Analysis: A Reverse Engineering Methodology, James S. Okolica, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

In a digital forensics examination, the capture and analysis of volatile data provides significant information on the state of the computer at the time of seizure. Memory analysis is a premier method of discovering volatile digital forensic information. While much work has been done in extracting forensic artifacts from Windows kernel structures, less focus has been paid to extracting information from Windows drivers. There are two reasons for this: (1) source code for one version of the Windows kernel (but not associated drivers) is available for educational use and (2) drivers are generally called asynchronously and contain no exported functions. …

In this article, we report the detailed spectroscopic studies of high Er3+content (50%) transparent YAG ceramic co-doped with nominal Cr3+ content (0.1 mol %). Various radiative and non-radiative spectroscopic properties such as radiative decay time, fluorescence branching ratio, emission/absorption cross sections, internal radiative quantum yields of the infrared and the upconverted emission bands are explored using standard experimental and theoretical methods and compared with YAG single crystal. Results show that although the non-radiative losses are high for 50% Er doped ceramic; several radiative spectral properties are almost in agreement with those for the single crystal YAG. Furthermore, because of the …

Modeling Electrically Small Structures In Layered Medium With Augmented Efie Method, Yongpin P. Chen, Lijun Jiang, Zhi Guo Qian, Weng Cho Chew Nov 2011

Modeling Electrically Small Structures In Layered Medium With Augmented Efie Method, Yongpin P. Chen, Lijun Jiang, Zhi Guo Qian, Weng Cho Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electrically small structures embedded in a planarly layered medium are modeled by the augmented electric field integral equation (EFIE) method in this paper. By separating charge as extra unknown list, and enforcing the current continuity equation, an augmented EFIE (A-EFIE) can be setup. The matrix-friendly formulation of layered medium Green's function is applied and the frequency scaling of the impedance matrix in the moment method is analyzed when the frequency tends to zero. Rank deficiency and the charge neutrality enforcement is also discussed in detail. Numerical results show that the low frequency breakdown of electrically small structures embedded in a …

Construction Of An Np Problem With An Exponential Lower Bound, Roman V. Yampolskiy Nov 2011

Construction Of An Np Problem With An Exponential Lower Bound, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In this paper we present a Hashed-Path Traveling Salesperson Problem (HPTSP), a new type of problem which has the interesting property of having no polynomial time solutions. Next we show that HPTSP is in the class NP by demonstrating that local information about sub-routes is insufficient to compute the complete value of each route. As a consequence, via Ladner"s theorem, we show that the class NPI is non-empty.

Sticks And Stones: Iied And Speech After Snyder V. Phelps, Heath Hooper Nov 2011

Sticks And Stones: Iied And Speech After Snyder V. Phelps, Heath Hooper

Missouri Law Review

On March 3, 2006, Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder died while serving a tour of duty in Iraq. After hearing of his funeral, members of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church attended and protested the Maryland ceremony bearing graphic photos and signs declaring "Thank God for IEDs" and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers." The church members did so in reflection of their religious belief that God has doomed America and its military missions because of the country's tolerance for homosexuality. Following the protest, Matthew Snyder's father, Albert Snyder, sued the Westboro Baptist Church for a variety of civil wrongs, including intentional …

Mavericks, Moderates, Or Drifters - Supreme Court Voting Alignments, 1838-2009, Christine Kexel Chabot, Benjamin Remy Chabot

Missouri Law Review

We introduce a new data set recording the vote of every Justice in 18,812 Supreme Court cases decided between 1838 and 1949. When combined with existing data sets, our new data allow us to examine votes in all cases through 2009. We use this data to address previously unanswerable questions about the president's ability to appoint Supreme Court Justices of similar ideology. Surprisingly, history shows that the president's odds of appointing a Justice who sides with appointees of his party have been no better than a coin flip. We find no evidence that divided government at the time of nomination …

The Good, The Bad, And The Actively Verified, John Williamson Nov 2011

The Good, The Bad, And The Actively Verified, John Williamson

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

We believe that we can use active probing for compromise recovery. Our intent is to exploit the differences in behavior between compromised and uncompromised systems and use that information to identify those which are not behaving as expected. Those differences may indicate a deviation in either con figuration or implementation from what we expect on the network, either of which suggests that the misbehaving entity might not be trustworthy. In this work, we propose and build a case for a method for using altered behavior directly resulting from or introduced as a side-effect of the compromise of a network service …

Musings On Mediation, Kleenex, And (Smudged) White Hats, Nancy A. Welsh Nov 2011

Musings On Mediation, Kleenex, And (Smudged) White Hats, Nancy A. Welsh

Faculty Scholarship

This Essay speculates on the global future of mediation. It anticipates that mediation’s popularity will continue to grow both in the U.S. and abroad particularly as courts continue to encourage and institutionalize the process. Meanwhile, the Essay acknowledges the existence and continuing development of a relatively small cadre of elite lawyers and retired judges who serve as private mediators in large, complex matters.

The Essay also raises concerns, though, regarding the current lack of clarity in the goals and procedural characteristics that define mediation. The Essay asserts that such lack of clarity invites abuse of the mediation privilege and exclusionary …

Detection And Characterization Of A Distinct Bornavirus Lineage From Healthy Canada Geese (Branta Canadensis), Susan Payne, Lina Covaleda, Guo Jianhua, Seth Swafford, John A. Baroch, Pamela J. Ferro, Blanca Lupiani, J Jill Heatley, Ian Tizard Nov 2011

Detection And Characterization Of A Distinct Bornavirus Lineage From Healthy Canada Geese (Branta Canadensis), Susan Payne, Lina Covaleda, Guo Jianhua, Seth Swafford, John A. Baroch, Pamela J. Ferro, Blanca Lupiani, J Jill Heatley, Ian Tizard

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Avian bornaviruses (ABV), identified in 2008, infect captive parrots and macaws worldwide. The natural reservoirs of these viruses are unknown. Reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) was used to screen oropharyngeal/ cloacal swab and brain samples from wild Canada geese (Branta canadensis) for ABV. Approximately 2.9% of swab samples were positive for bornavirus sequences. Fifty-two percent of brain samples from 2 urban flocks also tested positive, and brain isolates were cultured in duck embryo fibroblasts. Phylogenetic analyses placed goose isolates in an independent cluster, and more notably, important regulatory sequences present in Borna disease virus but lacking in psittacine ABVs were …

Aids Related Stigma In Social Relations: A Qualitative Study In Turkey, Aytul Kasapoglu, Elif Kus Saillard, Nilay Kaya, Feryal Turan

The Qualitative Report

The actual number of HIV/AIDS cases in Turkey is higher than the number of cases reported, and People Living with HIV (PLWHIV) may refrain from acknowledging their sickness or seeking help because of the stigma associated with HIV and fear of discrimination from their close friends, workmates, and even their families. In this paper we aim to explore HIV-positive people's relationships with significant others such as family members, friends, sexual partners, employers and health professionals in order to present the patients' perceptions about stigma and attitudes that lead to pro-social or anti-social behavior towards them. We carried out a qualitative …

Methodological Gravitism, Muhammad Zaman Nov 2011

Methodological Gravitism, Muhammad Zaman

The Qualitative Report

In this paper the author presents the case of the exchange marriage system to delineate a model of methodological gravitism. Such a model is not a deviation from or alteration to the existing qualitative research approaches. I have adopted culturally specific methodology to investigate spouse selection in line with the Grounded Theory Method. This approach, indeed, suggests the unification of methodological individualism, collectivism, and the social positioning of the actor to study the complex and intricately intertwined networks of relatedness.

Competing Cultural Worldviews In The United States: A Phenomenological Examination Of The Essential Core Elements Of Transnationalism And Transculturalism, Mark P. Orbe, Darlene K. Drummond Nov 2011

Competing Cultural Worldviews In The United States: A Phenomenological Examination Of The Essential Core Elements Of Transnationalism And Transculturalism, Mark P. Orbe, Darlene K. Drummond

The Qualitative Report

The objective of this study was to explore inductively the complex ways in which everyday discourse reflects larger - and often competing - cultural worldviews. A phenomenological framework was used to analyze transcripts generated through 13 focus group discussions involving 100 individuals. This particular analysis highlights how individuals who adopted a transnational worldview worked to transform cultural divisions through criticism of existing labels that failed to capture the multicultural nature of their identifies. Alternatively, individuals who adopted a transcultural worldview worked to transcend traditional cultural divisions through a rejection of traditional labels that worked against one unified social identity. The …
