Detection And Characterization Of A Distinct Bornavirus Lineage From Healthy Canada Geese (Branta Canadensis), Susan Payne, Lina Covaleda, Guo Jianhua, Seth Swafford, John A. Baroch, Pamela J. Ferro, Blanca Lupiani, J Jill Heatley, Ian Tizard Nov 2011

Detection And Characterization Of A Distinct Bornavirus Lineage From Healthy Canada Geese (Branta Canadensis), Susan Payne, Lina Covaleda, Guo Jianhua, Seth Swafford, John A. Baroch, Pamela J. Ferro, Blanca Lupiani, J Jill Heatley, Ian Tizard

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Avian bornaviruses (ABV), identified in 2008, infect captive parrots and macaws worldwide. The natural reservoirs of these viruses are unknown. Reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) was used to screen oropharyngeal/ cloacal swab and brain samples from wild Canada geese (Branta canadensis) for ABV. Approximately 2.9% of swab samples were positive for bornavirus sequences. Fifty-two percent of brain samples from 2 urban flocks also tested positive, and brain isolates were cultured in duck embryo fibroblasts. Phylogenetic analyses placed goose isolates in an independent cluster, and more notably, important regulatory sequences present in Borna disease virus but lacking in psittacine ABVs were …

The Raf/Mek/Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase 1/2 Pathway Can Mediate Growth Inhibitory And Differentiation Signaling Via Androgen Receptor Downregulation In Prostate Cancer Cells., Seung-Keun Hong, Jin-Hwan Kim, Ming-Fong Lin, Jong-In Park Nov 2011

The Raf/Mek/Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase 1/2 Pathway Can Mediate Growth Inhibitory And Differentiation Signaling Via Androgen Receptor Downregulation In Prostate Cancer Cells., Seung-Keun Hong, Jin-Hwan Kim, Ming-Fong Lin, Jong-In Park

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Upregulated ERK1/2 activity is correlated with androgen receptor (AR) downregulation in certain prostate cancer (PCa) that exhibits androgen deprivation-induced neuroendocrine differentiation, but its functional relevance requires elucidation. We found that sustained ERK1/2 activation using active Raf or MEK1/2 mutants is sufficient to induce AR downregulation at mRNA and protein levels in LNCaP. Downregulation of AR protein, but not mRNA, was blocked by proteasome inhibitors, MG132 and bortezomib, indicating that the pathway regulation is mediated at multiple points. Ectopic expression of a constitutively active AR inhibited Raf/MEK/ERK-mediated regulation of the differentiation markers, neuron-specific enolase and neutral endopeptidase, and the cyclin-dependent kinase …

Truth, Lies, And Stolen Valor: A Case For Protecting False Statements Of Fact Under The First Amendment, Julia K. Wood Nov 2011

Truth, Lies, And Stolen Valor: A Case For Protecting False Statements Of Fact Under The First Amendment, Julia K. Wood

Duke Law Journal

The Stolen Valor Act of 2005 (the Act) makes it a crime to lie about having received a medal authorized by Congress for the military. In 2010, in United States v. Alvarez, the Ninth Circuit found the Act unconstitutional under the First Amendment, holding that false statements of fact, like other content-based restrictions on speech, are subject to strict scrutiny. The Act failed this test because, according to the court, it was not narrowly tailored to serve a compelling government interest. The decision highlights the uncertainty of First Amendment protections for false speech. Though the Supreme Court has held that …

An Engineered Approach To Stem Cell Culture: Automating The Decision Process For Real-Time Adaptive Subculture Of Stem Cells, Dai Fei Elmer Ker, Lee E. Weiss, Silvina N. Junkers, Mei Chen, Zhaozheng Yin, Mike F. Sandbothe, Seungil Huh, Sungeun Eom, Ryoma Bise, Elvira Osuna-Highley, Takeo Kanade, Phil Gordon Campbell

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Current cell culture practices are dependent upon human operators and remain laborious and highly subjective, resulting in large variations and inconsistent outcomes, especially when using visual assessments of cell confluency to determine the appropriate time to subculture cells. Although efforts to automate cell culture with robotic systems are underway, the majority of such systems still require human intervention to determine when to subculture. Thus, it is necessary to accurately and objectively determine the appropriate time for cell passaging. Optimal stem cell culturing that maintains cell pluripotency while maximizing cell yields will be especially important for efficient, cost-effective stem cell-based therapies. …

Childhood Obesity And Blood Pressure: Back To The Future?, Bonita Falkner, Samuel Gidding Nov 2011

Childhood Obesity And Blood Pressure: Back To The Future?, Bonita Falkner, Samuel Gidding

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

The prevalence of childhood hypertension is increasing.1, 2 Studies that apply the 95th percentile definition and repeat measurements on three separate visits, report a pediatric hypertension prevalence of approximately 3.5%3, 4, and among obese children and adolescents the prevalence of both hypertension and prehypertension is even greater. The recently documented increase in hypertension among the young is due largely to the childhood obesity epidemic and possibly other secular changes in lifestyles. These publications and others confirm that hypertension is a prevalent child health condition, especially among overweight and obese children. A consistent positive association between body …

Holographic Recording In Corona Charged Acrylamide-Based Mfi-Zeolite Photopolymer, Temenujka Yovcheva, Izabela Naydenova, Simeon Sainov, Vincent Toal, Svetlana Mintova Nov 2011

Holographic Recording In Corona Charged Acrylamide-Based Mfi-Zeolite Photopolymer, Temenujka Yovcheva, Izabela Naydenova, Simeon Sainov, Vincent Toal, Svetlana Mintova

Articles

The influence of corona charging on holographic recording in acrylamide-based photopolymer nanocomposite containing MFI zeolite nanoparticles has been studied. The holographic recording was carried out in two different geometries —transmission grating recording and total internal reflection grating recording. During the recording process, the layers were charged in a corona field. It was observed that independently of the corona polarity, in the case of transmission geometry of recording, the corona charging led to a decrease in the diffraction efficiency (DE) of the grating. In the case of the total internal reflection grating, the DE increased in the corona field presence.

The Goodness In The Evil Of Seo: Why Search Engine Optimization Matters To Information Professionals, Erin Rushton Nov 2011

The Goodness In The Evil Of Seo: Why Search Engine Optimization Matters To Information Professionals, Erin Rushton

Library Scholarship

During the past 10 years, the adoption and saturation of search engine optimization (SEO) of web content has been on a strong growth trajectory. Advanced search algorithms developed mainly at research universities have turned into “monetization” and marketing opportunities for the mainstream (Think Google and its research origins at Stanford University.) Yet, there are those information professionals who view SEO with some reservation or even actual contempt due to the rampant SEO techniques that reduce the quality of search results by driving traffic

to sites that take advantage of trending searches rather

than useful information.

Building the capacity of nonprofits is important in our current social, economic and philanthropic landscape. The purpose of this report is to provide a guide to nascent nonprofit organizations on how to successfully grow their own capacity. Through an analysis of the current operations of the Creative Alliance of New Orleans, a description of my own duties within this organization, a SWOT analysis, a best practices model, analysis of two other organizations with similarly aligned missions and recommendations for the organization, it is hoped that this report will shed light on this particular organization’s transition from an immature organization into …

Poincaré Sphere Representation Of The Fixed-Polarizer Rotating-Retarder Optical System, R. M.A. Azzam Nov 2011

Poincaré Sphere Representation Of The Fixed-Polarizer Rotating-Retarder Optical System, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The trajectory of the polarization state of a monochromatic light beam after it passes through a fixed linear polarizer and a rotating linear retarder of arbitrary retardance Δ is determined on the Poincaré sphere. The three-dimensional figure-8 contour is shown to be the line of intersection of a right-circular cylinder with the sphere. The cylinder is parallel to the polar (s3) axis, touches the sphere at the equator (at the point that represents the linear polarization transmitted by the fixed polarizer), and has a radius r=sin2(Δ/2). Projections of the trajectory in the coordinate planes of the …

Forecasting Zero: U.S. Nuclear History And The Low Probability Of Disarmament, Jonathan Pearl Mr. Nov 2011

Forecasting Zero: U.S. Nuclear History And The Low Probability Of Disarmament, Jonathan Pearl Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

A vigorous debate is occurring among American elites with respect to whether and when the United States should relinquish its nuclear weapons. Bolstering hopes for tangible results is that a U.S. President is again publicly and forcefully supporting disarmament. While this debate, which addresses both technical and political factors related to abolition, may be the most serious one of its kind since the dawn of the nuclear age, the future of U.S. nuclear weapons policy remains uncertain. The general approach advanced today in U.S. policy circles largely hews, after all, to the logic of the past 65 years: arms control …

Non-Intrusive Identification Of Speech Codecs In Digital Audio Signals, Frank Jenner Nov 2011

Non-Intrusive Identification Of Speech Codecs In Digital Audio Signals, Frank Jenner

Theses

Speech compression has become an integral component in all modern telecommunications networks. Numerous codecs have been developed and deployed for efficiently transmitting voice signals while maintaining high perceptual quality. Because of the diversity of speech codecs used by different carriers and networks, the ability to distinguish between different codecs lends itself to a wide variety of practical applications, including determining call provenance, enhancing network diagnostic metrics, and improving automated speaker recognition. However, few research efforts have attempted to provide a methodology for identifying amongst speech codecs in an audio signal. In this research, we demonstrate a novel approach for accurately …
