Final Del Tango Perâonista, Delia Pamela Fuentes
Final Del Tango Perâonista, Delia Pamela Fuentes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis analyzes the complexities of Argentinean politics during Juan Domingo Perâon's last presidency, (1973-1974), as presented in Osvaldo Soriano's novel No habrâa mâas penas ni olvido. Soriano's work, set in the fictitious town of Colonia Vela, in the state of Buenos Aires, illustrates in a small scale the different social and political components that make up the national body. Historical and fictitious elements dramatize the conflict among the left and right wings of the Peronist Party. These two factions divide the villagers, who hold diverse images of Perâon and what the party entails, while putting their political beliefs and …

Ideological Analysis Of The Rhetoric Of Patriarchy In The Pentateuch, Mihaela E. Mallen
Ideological Analysis Of The Rhetoric Of Patriarchy In The Pentateuch, Mihaela E. Mallen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
As the basis for major religions widely practiced in western cultures, the Pentateuch also has deeply influenced the structure of these societies. A short historical review demonstrates the secondary status women occupy in western cultures. This study focuses on uncovering the presumed existence of embedded patriarchal ideology within the Pentateuch's text. For the purpose of this study, the researcher draws on the Pentateuch as it appears in the King James Version of the Bible. By conducting an ideological rhetorical analysis of this text, this examination uncovers elements characteristic to patriarchal rhetoric promoting men's superiority and ideals as well as constricting …
Identity, Power, And Ritual "Rape Play" In The S/M Community, Megan. Halena
Identity, Power, And Ritual "Rape Play" In The S/M Community, Megan. Halena
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Rape play is a type of consensual, ritualistic domination and submission, developed and enacted in a sado-masochistic (S/M) sex culture, which involves the appearance of force. There are two feminist theories that can be employed in a feminist analysis of rape play: dominance/radical feminism and libertarian/"sex positive" feminism. Libertarian/"sex positive" feminism holds that S/M, including rape play, is potentially compatible with feminism because the power dynamic between a dominant/"rapist" and submissive/"victim" does not draw on either practitioners' actual social identity and the power it possesses or lacks. Dominance/radical feminism argues that gender, which is socially constructed, can best be understood …
Impact Of Reputation Orientation On Marketing Strategy Formation And Performance, Deborah Goldring
Impact Of Reputation Orientation On Marketing Strategy Formation And Performance, Deborah Goldring
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This research explores the attitudes held by marketing managers about building their company's corporate reputation, and about the impact of their actions on performance. In an environment of costly brand building, declining customer loyalty, and increasing scrutiny from stakeholders who demand corporate responsibility and transparency, a concern for corporate reputation is increasingly important for everyone in the company, including marketing managers. The marketing literature, however, has not explored how managers who are concerned about the reputation of their companies can effectively adapt marketing strategy for reputation enhancement. The theoretical justification for this research is grounded in stakeholder theory, dynamic capabilities …
Influence Of Sex Hormones And Genetic Predisposition In Dry Eye In Sjèogren's Syndrome, Safinaz Mostafa
Influence Of Sex Hormones And Genetic Predisposition In Dry Eye In Sjèogren's Syndrome, Safinaz Mostafa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Sjèogren's syndrome (S) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by ocular and oral dryness and primarily affects post menopausal women. In the present study we investigated the time course of lymphocytic infiltration, apoptosis, caspase-3 activity and different cytokines levels in the lacrimal glands of both genetically predisposed and control mice to elucidate immunopathological mechanism leading to dry eye. The results of our experiments showed that ovariectomy accelerated pathological findings of SS by increasing lympocytic infiltration, cytokine production, lacrimal gland cell death and cleaved caspase-3 activity, and these effects were more pronounced and persistent in the genetically predisposed mouse model of …

Interrogating Social Conceptualizations Of Childbirth And Gender, Jeff. Nall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This dissertation draws on feminist theory and ecofeminist philosophy to examine the connections between understandings of women and nature and the construction of pervasive conceptualizations and practices of childbirth. It also examines the relationship between conceptualizations of men and masculinity, culture and nature, and childbirth. In order to conduct such an examination, this study explores the dominant Western discourse around gender and childbirth. Specifically, the work aims to identify prominent characteristics and themes related to childbirth in both popular culture, such as Hollywood films (Knocked Up, The Backup Plan), documentaries (The Business of Being Born), birth guides, magazines, news articles, …

Light Intensity Influences On Algal Pigments, Proteins And Carbohydrates, Cidya S. Grant
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Phytoplankton Chlorophyll a (CHLa), total protein, colloidal carbohydrates, storage carbohydrates and taxonomic pigment relationships were studied in two cyanophytes (Microcystis aeruginosa and Synnechococcus elongatus), two chlorophytes (Dunaliella tertiolecta and Scenedesmus quadricauda), one cryptophyte (Rhodomonas salina), two diatoms (Cyclotella meneghiniana and Thalassiosira weissflogii) and one dinophyte (Amphidinium carterae) to assess if algal biomass could be expressed in other indices than just chlorophyll a alone. Protein and carbohydrates are more useful currencies for expressing algal biomass, with respect to energy flow amongst trophic levels. These phytoplankton were grown at low light (LL = 37 (So(Bmol photons m-2 s-1), medium light (ML = …
Long-Term Post-Katrina Volunteerism, Susan. D'Aloia
Long-Term Post-Katrina Volunteerism, Susan. D'Aloia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The trauma and devastation that resulted from Hurricane Katrina's landfall on August 29, 2005, produced a wide spread public perception of government neglect and ineptitude. Subsequently, a period of nationwide shame and concern for those most affected by the disaster elicited a wave of financial generosity from all social sectors. Yet, by late 2005 the media declared that the majority of Americans had become desensitized to the tragedy and its consequences, coining this shift in public perception as "Katrina fatigue." Thousands of volunteers contradicted this phenomenon, however, by performing service in the devastated city of New Orleans. Long-term volunteers defied …

Mimetic, Coercive, And Normative Influences In Institutionalization Of Organizational Practices, Kristi D. Caravella
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In this study, DiMaggio and Powell's (1983) institutional model of isomorphic change is hypothesized to explain the changes witnessed in educational organizations with regard to the acceptance, implementation and institutionalization of distance learning. In order to show the power of institutional theory in explaining organizational change over time, a comparative qualitative case study methodology is utilized. Document analysis and interviews are used to explore the utility of this isomorphic change model. Each research question seeks to explore different influences of institutional isomorphism, coercive, normative, and mimetic. DiMaggio and Powell (1983) suggest organizations converge on similar practices and behaviors and appear …
Modeling Of An Ecology Of Language, Kristyl Williams Kepley
Modeling Of An Ecology Of Language, Kristyl Williams Kepley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this research study was to identify and define important components that might constitute an ecology of language (Mufwene 2001; Haugen 1972). Focusing on components as varied as social networks, physical ecology, identity and linguistic realities allowed for the construction of such a model, which was then applied to a specific case study addressing the vitality of Haitian Creole among first and second generation Haitian college students in South Florida. The resulting ecology of language model demonstrates that the competition and selection pressures guiding language use among first and second generation Haitian college students hinge on two ecological …

Nato And The West - The Discursive Myths Of Salvation And Conspiracy, Daniela. Popescu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis provides a critical cultural analysis of the discursive myths of salvation and conspiracy, using as a case study the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) during the transition period in Romania, from 1989 to 2007. The study offers an answer to the questions: how do NATO myths change? Why and with what discursive implications for the Romanian audience? The thesis uses a combination of methodological tools from three different disciplines - history, mythology, and rhetoric - with the intent of showing how the Romanians' public attitudes toward NATO change in four different political contexts: during the integration period until …

Nurtured Beauty, Kim. Spivey
Nurtured Beauty, Kim. Spivey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Interested in nurturing beauty, I create paintings that reference life processes through layers of struggle, discovery, recovery and generation. Employing a metaphor of the garden, my paintings can be seen as spaces where I determine what grows, stays, is mulched, or weeded out. I seek a balance between coexisting desires of restraint and control and extravagance with a sense of coming unbound. I emphasize the painting field as a whole, while also paying deep attention to the minute, inviting the viewer to discover complex worlds at different scales within each environment I create. My intimate, domesticated painted environments offer the …
Persepolis And Waltz With Bashir, An Alternative Perspective On The Middle East, A Mirror For The West, Kristyna. Dzmuranova
Persepolis And Waltz With Bashir, An Alternative Perspective On The Middle East, A Mirror For The West, Kristyna. Dzmuranova
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This project presents a three-level analysis of Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir to elucidate the way these films deconstruct the image of the Middle East that the dominant Western media perpetuate. The thesis demonstrates that the combination of highly expressive and easily understandable animated form with an autobiographical storyline that endows the films with attractive authenticity, personification and intimacy, creates a palatable setting for the intellectual texts. Further, this project discloses the ways representation gives rise to stereotypes and illustrates how the films articulate an alternative to the dichotomous perception of West versus Middle East. The movies impersonate a unique, …
Pitting Potential Of High Performance Duplex Stainless Steels Reinforcements, Erika Maria Sanchez
Pitting Potential Of High Performance Duplex Stainless Steels Reinforcements, Erika Maria Sanchez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
A cyclic polarization procedure was designed to evaluate the pitting potentials of high performance stainless steels in synthetic concrete pore water at different chloride concentrations. Cyclic polarization scans were performed on high performance stainless steel reinforcements, S32201, S32305 and S32205. Pitting initiation was observed below the oxygen evolution potential for high chloride concentrations. S32201 and S32304 showed the presence of metastable pitting before reaching its pitting potential. Pitting resistance performance, based on cyclic polarization, was consistent with each material's respective Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) value. For S32201 and S32304, pitting potential decreased as the chloride concentration increased, whereas S32205 …
Post-Apocalyptic, The Cyborg, And The Passage Of Time, Aaron. Pancho
Post-Apocalyptic, The Cyborg, And The Passage Of Time, Aaron. Pancho
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study is an examination of the several themes and conventions of science fiction that seem to appear in the texts of Samuel Beckett. Expectedly, many of the texts produced by both science fiction and Beckett just before, during, and immediately after World War II share similar concerns; though perhaps less expectedly, these two relatively unlike bodies of work can be used to help better understand and illuminate one another. In Waiting for Godot, nuclear anxieties shed light on the play's apparent post-apocalyptic landscape and the profound emptiness that permeates the stage. In Molloy, Hugh Kenner uses Centaur imagery to …

Reconfiguring The Classic Narrative Of Pulp Fiction, Alexandria S. Gray
Reconfiguring The Classic Narrative Of Pulp Fiction, Alexandria S. Gray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This project considers four writers that have used postmodern narrative strategies to reconfigure classic pulp science fiction tropes. The primary texts are Catherine L. Moore's "Shambleau," Eleanor Arnason's "The Warlord of Saturn's Moons", Robert Heinlein's "The Rolling Stones", and Margaret Atwood's "The Blind Assassin". Each experiments with narrative voices or uses a story-within-a-story structure. These strategies enable the authors to engage and comment on the process of how traditional tropes and narratives are brought into a new context through appropriation and reconstruction.

Role Of Middle Childhood Attachment Styles In Peer Liking And Target-Specific Aggression, Alexzandria. May
Role Of Middle Childhood Attachment Styles In Peer Liking And Target-Specific Aggression, Alexzandria. May
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Attachment, a vital part of human life, is defined as a strong emotional bond with a caregiver that is formed through repetitions of behaviors that children adjust to accordingly. One forms a view on relationships that transfers from parents to peers as a result of their internal working model (IWM). A secure attachment can form a healthy model while an insecure one may form an unhealthy, negative model. The present study assesses preadolescents' attachment styles toward their friends and examines whether their attachment styles interact with peers' attachment styles to predict liking of the peers and aggression toward the peers.

Studies On The Mechanism By Which Sulindac Sensitizes Cancer Cells To Oxidative Stress, Alexander Kreymerman
Studies On The Mechanism By Which Sulindac Sensitizes Cancer Cells To Oxidative Stress, Alexander Kreymerman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Sulindac is a known NSAID that has also been shown to have anti-cancer activity that is not related to its ability to inhibit COX 1 and 2. During the past 15 years there have been a large number of studies attempting to elucidate its mechanism of action. Our laboratory has shown that sulindac can both protect normal cells and enhance the killing of cancer cells under oxidative stress from H2O2 and TBHP. However, except for mitochondrial dysfunction and ROS production, the mechanism by which sulindac sensitized the cancer cells to oxidative stress remains unknown. Results of this research project suggest …
Source Speed Estimation Using A Pilot Tone In A High-Frequency Acoustic Modem, Poorani. Kathiroli
Source Speed Estimation Using A Pilot Tone In A High-Frequency Acoustic Modem, Poorani. Kathiroli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis proposes to estimate the speed of a moving acoustic source by either linear or non linear processing of the resulting Doppler shift present in a high-frequency pilot tone. The source is an acoustic modem (Hermes) which currently uses moving average to estimate and compensate for Doppler shift. A new auto regressive approach to Doppler estimation (labeled IIR method in the text) promises to give a better estimate. The results for a simulated peak velocity of 2 m/s in the presence of additive noise showed an RMSE of 0.23 m/s using moving average vs. 0.00018 m/s for the auto …
