Conference Exhibition

Preface

Visual Studies at Lingnan University answers the growing interest in Arts & Humanities research with relevance to society by emphasizing environmenal aesthetics, Chinese art, Art and Well-being, and "research expression." The exhibition "placemarks" is an example of research expression, for each of the works on display is a response to a clear question: "What Environment Do We Want?" This question defines the focus of the conference to which the exhibition, and the exchanges that it facilitates, contribute by means other than traditional forms of scholarly talk.

In organizing the conference titled "What Environment Do We Want? Environmental Aesthetics and …

Mass Culture As Domination Or Resistance In Latin American Narratives, Tim Robbins Nov 2011

Mass Culture As Domination Or Resistance In Latin American Narratives, Tim Robbins

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Since the introduction of radio to Latin America in the 1930’s and later television in the 1950’s, mass culture has become an important and even contentious part of Latin American identity, and as such has also become an important part of Latin American narratives. In looking at the issue of mass culture, two basic approaches emerge: one can see mass culture as a force of domination or one can see it as a force of resistance. It is possible to trace these approaches through different time periods and geopolitical situations. The Mexican Onda writers, for instance, utilize the rock and …

The Impact Of An Aquatic Exercise Protocol On Physiologic Measures Within An Asthmatic Population, Kasee Hildenbrand, Timothy S. Freson, Celestina Barbosa-Leiker, Sara Nordio, Bruce E. Becker, Ashley J. Miller

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Individuals suffering from asthma typically have subnormal exercise tolerance and poor physical fitness. The purpose of this case series study was to examine the impact of a new aquatic exercise protocol on physiological variables in a group of asthmatics. Participants were medically diagnosed and managed asthmatics in a rural community. A total of 8 males and 12 females were accepted into the study with 7 males and 9 females completing the 12-week study. Physiological measures were taken pre- and posttreatment with paired t-tests used for analyses. Increases in VO2max (pre-treatment mean (M) = 31.244 SD = 9.772; post-treatment M = …

An Evaluation Of The Christa Mcauliffe Space Education Center Programs, Shelley Diane Ellington Nov 2011

An Evaluation Of The Christa Mcauliffe Space Education Center Programs, Shelley Diane Ellington

Theses and Dissertations

Recent calls for better education have many teachers trying out new ways to engage their students and teach them required content. In the current educational atmosphere of accountability, many people are beginning to question the effectiveness and utility of their educational programs. The Christa McAuliffe Space Education Center (CMSEC) is one such program. Key aspects addressed in this study included better understanding the essence of the CMSEC experience, whether it provides any beneficial impact to visitors, and how the CMSEC programs fit into the educational spectrum. An exploratory mixed-method design (utilizing focus groups, interviews, and surveys) was used to explore …

Part 1: Size-Independent Quantification Of Ligand Binding Site Depth In Receptor Proteins. Part 2: Representing Rod-Shaped Protein 3d Structures In Cylindrical Coordinates, Srujana Cheguri Nov 2011

Part 1: Size-Independent Quantification Of Ligand Binding Site Depth In Receptor Proteins. Part 2: Representing Rod-Shaped Protein 3d Structures In Cylindrical Coordinates, Srujana Cheguri

Theses

Abstract 1 We have developed a web server that implements the two complementary methods to quantify the depth of ligand and/or ligand binding site (LBS) in a protein-ligand complex. The two methods are the `secant plane' (SP) and the `tangent sphere' (TS) methods. In the SP and TS methods, the protein molecular centroid (global centroid, GC), and the LBS centroid (local centroid, LC) are first determined. The SP is defined as the plane passing through the LBS centroid and normal to the line passing through the LC and the protein molecular centroid. The "exterior side" of the SP is the …

The Lincy Institute E-Health Summit: Promoting Coalitions In Technology And Health, Bo Bernhard Nov 2011

The Lincy Institute E-Health Summit: Promoting Coalitions In Technology And Health, Bo Bernhard

Policy Briefs and Reports

A prestigious stakeholder gathering is proposed which will advance technology-based “e-health” (internet, social networking, and smart phone-based) practices of community groups. This assembly - The Lincy Institute Summit - will educate community partners about the potential of e-health interventions for primary prevention of risky behavior, obtain expert stakeholder evaluations of an existing e-health prototype for gambling, and provide a powerful foundation for a community-based coalition focused on risky youth behaviors. The fellowship will provide support for summit-related costs, integration of our community partners’ prevention messages into e-health technologies, and the development of a coalition and grant applications to support the …

Residence Hall Sense Of Community In Physical And Technology-Based Spaces: Implications For Alcohol-Related Attitudes And Behaviors, Benjamin C. Graham

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Social experiences such as sense of community (SOC) and peer norms have the potential to influence attitudes and behaviors around a host of wellness-related issues. Social interaction, facilitated by the rapid growth of communication technology, in addition to the enduring need to interact in physical space, represent important community features. College residence halls are of interest to community psychology and other fields, as they are highly interactive, technologically-rich contexts where communities occur. Peer norms having a strong relationship to students’ perspectives and choices around alcohol. Less understood is the role that SOC plays, and the forms of social interaction that …

In Vitro Efficacy Of Acetohydroxyacid Synthase Inhibitors Against Clinical Strains Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Isolated From A Hospital In Beijing, China., Mei Dong, Di Wang, Ying Jiang, Li Zhao, Caie Yang, Chun Wu

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS) inhibitors against Mycobacterium tuberculosis from China, including multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) strains. METHODS: In this study, the tube dilution method and Middlebrook 7H10 agar media were used to describe the in vitro efficacy of 3 AHAS inhibitors (sulfometuron methyl, monosulfuron, and monosulfuron-ester) against H37Rv and 26 clinical isolates, which include MDR-TB and XDR-TB strains, from the 309th Hospital of Chinese People9s Liberation Army (PLA 309), Beijing, China. Cytotoxity of these compounds were then evaluated using the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2yl]-2,5-dipheny tetrazolium bromide assay with HBE cells. All the experiments were …

Nutrient And Fecal Microbe Assessment Of The Water Quality Of Tates Creek, Madison County, Kentucky, Krisopher H. Carroll, Walter S. Borowski Nov 2011

Nutrient And Fecal Microbe Assessment Of The Water Quality Of Tates Creek, Madison County, Kentucky, Krisopher H. Carroll, Walter S. Borowski

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Tates Creek is a significant tributary to the Kentucky River that has shown high levels of microbial and nutrient pollution. We sampled the waters of Tates Creek comprehensively by occupying 25 stations along its 13-mile length, collecting stream water at the confluence of major tributaries from its headwaters to the Kentucky River. Samples were collected four times between May and August 2011 during dry periods as well as immediately after rainfall events.

We measured ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3-) and phosphate (PO4-) concentrations using colorimetry. Microbial samples were measured for total coliform …

Sticks And Stones: Iied And Speech After Snyder V. Phelps, Heath Hooper Nov 2011

Sticks And Stones: Iied And Speech After Snyder V. Phelps, Heath Hooper

Missouri Law Review

On March 3, 2006, Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder died while serving a tour of duty in Iraq. After hearing of his funeral, members of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church attended and protested the Maryland ceremony bearing graphic photos and signs declaring "Thank God for IEDs" and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers." The church members did so in reflection of their religious belief that God has doomed America and its military missions because of the country's tolerance for homosexuality. Following the protest, Matthew Snyder's father, Albert Snyder, sued the Westboro Baptist Church for a variety of civil wrongs, including intentional …

Opening The Broom Closet: Recognizing The Religious Rights Of Wiccans, Witches, And Other Neo-Pagans, Bradford S. Stewart Nov 2011

Opening The Broom Closet: Recognizing The Religious Rights Of Wiccans, Witches, And Other Neo-Pagans, Bradford S. Stewart

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Religious freedom is a core component of our nation and one of the most widely known and accepted constitutional guarantees provided by the First Amendment. No prior civilization had adopted a national policy that tolerated various religious beliefs while simultaneously refusing to endorse or promote a national religion. Considering the fundamental backdrop of religious tolerance, it might seem unimaginable that a skilled medical technician could be fired from her job, an alleged victim of sexual abuse could have her credibility undermined in a court of law, or a mother could lose custody of her child, under the color of legality, …

Laboratory Diagnosis Of Clostridium Difficile Infection: Can Molecular Amplification Methods Move Us Out Of Uncertainty?, Fred C. Tenover, Ellen Jo Baron, Lance R. Peterson, David Persing

Biology Faculty Publications

The laboratory diagnosis of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) continues to be challenging. Recent guidelines from professional societies in the United States note that enzyme immunoassays for toxins A and B do not have adequate sensitivity to be used alone for detecting CDI, yet the optimal method for diagnosing this infection remains unclear. Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) that target chromosomal toxin genes (usually the toxin B gene, tcdB) show high sensitivity and specificity, provide rapid results, and are amenable to both batch and on-demand testing, but these tests were not universally recommended for routine use in the recent guidelines. …
