Electrodeposition Of Metallic Gas Diffusion Layers For Use In Pem Fuel Cells, Gargi Tandra Jan 2011

Electrodeposition Of Metallic Gas Diffusion Layers For Use In Pem Fuel Cells, Gargi Tandra

Masters Theses

"This work developed a novel method of using Electrodeposition techniques to fabricate metallic gas diffusion layers (GDLs) for application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. These GDLs improve the electrical and thermal conductivity of the fuel cells, and their straight, noncircular pores remove water efficiently. The Electrodeposition technique used here relies on a sacrificial copper anode and an aluminum sheet 50 µm thick acts as a cathode. Unlike the other laboratory based methods available for the fabrication of metallic GDLs, this method is simple and cost effective. With controlled deposition parameters and a chemical lift-off process that corrodes the aluminum …

Phytoforensic Tools: Directional Uptake Of Chlorinated Solvents, Matthew Alan Limmer

Masters Theses

"Trees have been used to locate contaminated soil and groundwater, augmenting traditional methods, such as well drilling, that are time-consuming and expensive. In the past decade, plant sampling has gained acceptance as a reliable method for site screening. In this new field of phytoforensics, research efforts focus on developing quicker, more accurate and more informative sampling and analysis methods for measuring contaminant concentrations in trees. These phytoforensic tools are a novel approach to site assessments, potentially reducing cost while more effectively locating contaminated groundwater. This thesis evolved from field data suggesting azimuthal concentrations in tree trunks may reflect the corresponding …

Analytical Expression For Mode-Coherence Coefficient Of A Uniformly-Distributed Wave Propagating In Different Homogeneous Media, Noor Ezzulddin Naji

Turkish Journal of Physics

Presented is a derivation of an analytical expression for the mode-coherence coefficients of uniform-distributed wave propagating within different homogeneous media-as in the case of hyperbolic Gaussian beams-and a simple method involving the superposition of two such beams is proposed. The results obtained from this work are very applicable to study and analysis of Hermite-Gaussian beam propagation, especially in the problems of radiation-matter interaction, and laser beam propagation such as employed in free-space and fiber optical communications.

Hydromagnetic Thermal Boundary Layer Flow Of A Perfectly Conducting Fluid, Kalidas Das

Turkish Journal of Physics

Using successive approximation technique, an analysis of unsteady hydromagnetic boundary layer flow with thermal relaxation of perfectly conducting, viscous incompressible fluid past a semi-infinite porous plate in presence of heat absorbing sinks is carried out. The expression for velocity and temperature fields, local skin friction coefficient, local heat transfer coefficient etc have been derived when the free stream velocity exponentially depends on time. The effects of different parameters entering into the problem are shown graphically and discussed numerically.

Social Network Analysis Of The Video Bloggers' Community In Youtube, Anusha Mogallapu Jan 2011

Social Network Analysis Of The Video Bloggers' Community In Youtube, Anusha Mogallapu

Masters Theses

"This research studied the structure of the social network of the video blogger community on YouTube. It analyzed the social network structure of friends and subscribers of the 187 video bloggers on YouTube and calculated the social network measures. This thesis compares the results to the structure described by Warmbrodt et al. in 2007 and explains the reasons for the distinctions. The number of video bloggers has increased enormously, and the form of their interactions has changed. As a result, the video blogger social network has evolved from a core/periphery structure to one that is centralized. This indicates that the …

Mutation Of The Hof1 Pest Domain Affects Cytokinesis In Budding Yeast, Katherine E. Stockstill Jan 2011

Mutation Of The Hof1 Pest Domain Affects Cytokinesis In Budding Yeast, Katherine E. Stockstill

Masters Theses

"Cytokinesis is the division of a cell into two daughter cells. Cytokinesis failure results in polyploidy, which may contribute to tumorigenesis or cause cell death. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae protein Hof1, which is required for efficient cytokinesis, is phosphorylated during mitosis. The hypothesis that MEN (mitotic exit network) dependent phosphorylation regulates Hof1 degradation, triggering completion of cytokinesis was tested. Hof1 contains a PEST sequence, which is rich in proline, glutamic acid, serine, and threonine, and is believed to be involved in protein degradation. To test the hypothesis, we created two non-phosphorylatable mutants of the Hof1 PEST domain tagged with GFP. The …

Density Determination Of Tristructural-Isotropic Nuclear Fuel Using Multiple Projection X-Ray Radiography, Frank Angelo Strantz Jan 2011

Density Determination Of Tristructural-Isotropic Nuclear Fuel Using Multiple Projection X-Ray Radiography, Frank Angelo Strantz

Masters Theses

"Effective methods of enhancing the safety and efficiency of the nuclear power industry embolden its perception and economic viability. Fuel reliability is an essential component of the prosperity of next generation high temperature reactors; as such, an equally dependable quality control method is mandatory. Tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) fuel, the fuel developed for use in these reactors, utilizes density measurement of coating layers as a standard for quality control. Common methods of measuring density, such as sink-float and ceramography are destructive, and as such generate radioactive waste, take a relatively long time to prepare samples, rely on a low sampling rate to …

Numerical Simulation Of Relative Permeability Modifier Effect On Oil And Water Production, Murad Mohammedahmed Abdulfarraj Jan 2011

Numerical Simulation Of Relative Permeability Modifier Effect On Oil And Water Production, Murad Mohammedahmed Abdulfarraj

Masters Theses

"Excess water production is one of the most prevalent operational problems that oil companies are facing. Polymers and polymer gels have been used widely to control excess water production for mature oilfields. It is well known that polymers/gels can reduce the permeability to water (Krw) much more than that to oil (Kro). This phenomenon is called disproportionate permeability reduction (DPR) and the polymers or gels that exhibit this behavior are called relative permeability modifier (RPM). When RPMs are placed in reservoir, reduced permeability to water can lead to decreased water production, and sometimes increased hydrocarbon production, therefore prolonging the useful …

Hardware Emulation Of Wireless Communication Fading Channels, Fei Ren Jan 2011

Hardware Emulation Of Wireless Communication Fading Channels, Fei Ren

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation investigates several main challenges to implementing hardware-based wireless fading channel emulators with emphasis on incorporating accurate correlation properties. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading channels are usually triply-selective with three types of correlation: temporal correlation, inter-tap correlation, and spatial correlation. The proposed emulators implement the triply-selective fading Channel Impulse Response (CIR) by incorporating the three types of correlation into multiple uncorrelated frequency-flat Rayleigh fading waveforms while meeting real-time requirements for high data-rate, large-sized MIMO, and/or long CIR channels. Specifically, mixed parallel-serial computational structures are implemented for Kronecker products of the correlation matrices, which makes the best tradeoff between computational speed …
