Maternal, Neonatal And Feeding Type Factors Associated With Severity Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis, Cheryl Ann Miner Nov 2011

Maternal, Neonatal And Feeding Type Factors Associated With Severity Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis, Cheryl Ann Miner

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: To identify statistical associations with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) severity as dichotomized into cases with Bell stage II and III disease.
Study Design: We conducted a retrospective study using eight consecutive years of data from a multihospital healthcare system analyzed NEC severity (Bell stage II vs. III).
Results: We identified 220 neonates with stage ≥ II who had 225 separate episodes of NEC (157 stage II and 68 stage III). Those with stage III were born at earlier gestational age (P<0.0001) and lower birth weight (P<0.0001). Diagnosis of NEC occurred on about the same day of life in stage II and stage III cases. Those who developed stage III had significantly higher C-reactive protein (P<0.0001), I/T ratio (P= 0.0005), mean platelet volume (MPV) (P= 0.0001) and lower pH (P<0.0001) and platelet counts (P<0.0001). Transfusions were more common to those who progressed to stage III (P<0.0001). Regression analysis indicated higher odds of stage III in relationship to the volume of RBC transfusions (OR 2.41, {CI 1.85 to 3.11}, P<0.0001) and pasteurized human milk (PHM) (OR 1.32, {CI 1.07 to 1.62}, P = 0.0089). In contrast, feeding early mother's own milk (colostrum) for five days reduced the odds for stage III (OR 0.802, {CI 0.67 to 0.96}, P=0.0170). Those with small bowel resection were less likely to have received mother's own milk before NEC (OR 0.94, {CI 0.89 to 0.99}, P = 0.019) and factors predicting death from NEC were a low pH (OR 2.21, {CI 1.27 to 3.85}, P = 0.0005) and less colostrum (OR 0.96, {CI 0.94 to 0.99}, P = 0.003).
Conclusions: RBC transfusions and PHM increased the odds for stage III NEC, whereas early mother's own milk five days …

Optimation Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus In Azolla Growth As Biofertilizer, Hany Handajani Nov 2011

Optimation Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus In Azolla Growth As Biofertilizer, Hany Handajani

Makara Journal of Technology

Nitrogen is one of the most important minerals for living organisms. Azolla is known as a small water fern which can fix nitrogen through the symbiotic association with the blue green algae Anabaena. Experimental studies were carried out in the glass house, investigating the growth of Azolla using different levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in the media. The experiment used 12 treatments with 3 levels of nitrogen (0, 5, and 10 mg atom/L) and 4 levels of phosphorus (0, 10, 20, and 30 mg atom/l) in a factorial design with 3 replicates. The results show that the highest biomass for …

Application Of Principal Component Proximity Transform And Geostatistics Methods For Volume Shale Distribution As Reservoir Characreristic Imaging In Seismic 3d, Nur Islami

Makara Journal of Technology

Application of Principal Component Proximity Transform and Geostatistics Methods for Volume Shale Distribution as Reservoir Characreristic Imaging in Seismic 3D. Principal component proximity transform (PCPT) technique was used to predict the content of volume shale into seismic data in reservoir modeling framework. The goal in this research is to get the volume shale imaging in three dimensions and allow for reservoir modelling. The reservoir modelling requires an integrated quantitative and qualitative data sources collected separately, such as well and seismic data. Integrating PCPT and Geostatistic methods can generate the detail information for characterization of reservoir’s properties. Finally, it shows that …

The Migratory Response Of Labor To Special Economic Zones In The Philippines, 1995–2005, Scott R. Sanders, David L. Brown

Faculty Publications

In the mid 1990s the Filipino government adopted a new export-led development policy in an attempt to attract new investments and lower the unemployment rates throughout the country. The central idea was to provide foreign investors more access to Filipino markets and labor by giving them investor tax breaks and lowering trade tariffs. In return, the government hoped that investors would bring large amounts of capital into designated areas thereby creating new jobs and stimulating the domestic economy. The Filipino created the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) and Base Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) to manage the operation of the Special …

Considering Quality Control In Distance And Online Education: A Commentary, Richard Roe Nov 2011

Considering Quality Control In Distance And Online Education: A Commentary, Richard Roe

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Quality control measures are needed in distance education. The author examined the strengths and weaknesses of course delivery in distance education and provided recommendations for a successful series of steps that should be followed in course development to assure quality control. Quality control measures can become valuable tools to enhance the educational delivery of distance and online coursework and develop the professional competence of instructors. Measures can range from course oversight by trained personnel, to mandated components that are common within all courses. New technologies especially in rich multimedia and asynchronous communication methods allow for increased learning opportunities. Students can …

Phylogenomic-Based Case Study: An Undergraduate Research Pedagogy At Kentucky State University, The Only Historically Black College And University In The Commonwealth Of Kentucky, Narayanan Rajendran, William Mazhawidza

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Currently the undergraduate biology curriculum at 2 and 4-year colleges especially in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) is undergoing a facelift by implementing a range of recommendations of committees on education. This has produced a demand to educate and train the current and future generation of undergraduates as scientists capable to perform modern biological research that is heavily dependent on genomic training, such as phylogenomics. It is our observation that the HBCUs may not have a strong infrastructure enough to meet this challenge without the development of vigorous research-based learning programs to complement the traditional lecture-only based configuration. In …

Web 2.0 Technologies In Higher Education Teaching: A Practical Introduction, Susan Berg Nov 2011

Web 2.0 Technologies In Higher Education Teaching: A Practical Introduction, Susan Berg

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Web 2.0 tools are websites that are interactive, allowing users not only to read information but also to create products and interact with others. These tools offer new opportunities for designing instruction for heightened student engagement, particularly with “digital natives.” Yet often faculty are unaware of what these tools can do, are uncertain of how to use them, and leery of the time required to design instruction incorporating them. This paper is a very practical introduction to using common Web 2.0 tools including wikis, blogs, and social bookmarking sites. Sample assignments developed and used by the author or described in …

Meeting Qm Standards Through Modular Design, Paula Jones Nov 2011

Meeting Qm Standards Through Modular Design, Paula Jones

Instructional Development Center Faculty and Staff Research

The Quality Matters (QM) standards are benchmarks that educators strive to follow as they develop online courses. The QM standards are based on current literature focused on course delivery rather than course design. One method of course design that educators can use to provide organized, sequential and navigational web-supported instruction is through the use of modular instruction (use of modules). What is unique about the modular structure shared in this session is the use of an "Introductory Module" as a starting point in the course, plus the structure of the "Content Modules" that include links to communication boards that support …

Music In Alternative Spaces, Seán Mac Erlaine Nov 2011

Music In Alternative Spaces, Seán Mac Erlaine

Books/Book Chapters

Chapter from Dublin’s Future: New Visions for Ireland’s Capital City, Dr. Lorcan Sirr (ed.), (Dublin: The Liffey Press, 2011).

Dublin’s Future is a collection of essays, which, for the first time, recognises that the future of the island’s largest and most important urban conurbation is about more than the engineering of roads and the colouring of development plans.

Seán Mac Erlaine’s chapter explores the performance of music in Ireland’s capital city, documenting the currently vibrant use of alternative art spaces for niche markets of improvised, experimental and non-mainstream music practice.

Contributors are recognised authorities in their fields. They cross …

Bullied By Budgets, Pushed By Patrons, Driven By Demand: Libraries And Tantalizing Technologies, Antje Mays

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

Libraries are caught in the middle—between static or shrinking budgets on one hand and ever-expanding user needs on the other. How did we get here, and where do we go from here? This paper will offer two perspectives: Part I will present survey results about changing Library purchasing habits in light of changing formats, access, business models and user demands. Data from a previous survey on this topic will be compared and updated. Pricing trends and possible futures will be discussed. Part II will briefly trace the history of libraries’ roles in scholarly communication and connecting learners with knowledge. From …

Human Rights Law And Military Aid Delivery: A Case Study Of The Leahy Law, Winifred Tate Nov 2011

Human Rights Law And Military Aid Delivery: A Case Study Of The Leahy Law, Winifred Tate

Faculty Scholarship

Explicitly prohibiting US military counternarcotics assistance to foreign military units facing credible allegations of abuses, Leahy Law creation and implementation illuminates the epistemological challenges of knowledge production about violence in the policy process. First passed in 1997, the law emerged from strategic alliances between elite NGO advocates, grassroots activists and critically located Congressional aides in response to the perceived inability of Congress to act on human rights information. I explore the resulting transformation of aid delivery: rather than suspend aid when no “clean” units could be found, US officials convinced their Colombian allies to create new units consisting of vetted …

Compassion And Coalitions: A Review Of Reshaping The Work Family Debate: Why Men And Class Matter By Joan Williams, Carolyn Shapiro Nov 2011

Compassion And Coalitions: A Review Of Reshaping The Work Family Debate: Why Men And Class Matter By Joan Williams, Carolyn Shapiro

All Faculty Scholarship

Reshaping the Work-Family Debate: Why Men and Class Matter by Joan Williams is illuminating, intellectually challenging, and insightful. It is not, however, a typical law professor book. Neither academic inquiry nor policy analysis (although it contains elements of both), Reshaping the Work-Family Debate is more of a manifesto. Williams seeks measurable and meaningful change in the family and work lives of Americans, even if that change is imperfect or incomplete, and she sees theoretical or ideological rigidity as one obstacle to such change.

Williams believes that coalition-building is essential to addressing the work family challenges she identifies. Although she has …

Pragmatism And Meaning: Assessing The Message Of Star Trek: The Original Series, Anne Collins Smith, Owen M. Smith Nov 2011

Pragmatism And Meaning: Assessing The Message Of Star Trek: The Original Series, Anne Collins Smith, Owen M. Smith

Faculty Publications

The original Star Trek television series purported to depict a future in which such evils as sexism and racism do not exist, and intelligent beings from numerous planets live in a condition of peace and mutual benefit. As many scholars have observed, from a standpoint of contemporary theoretical analysis, Star Trek: The Original Series contains many elements that are inimical to the utopia it claims to depict and thus undermine its supposed message. A different perspective may be gained by drawing on the American pragmatist movement, in which the value of an idea is judged by its effectiveness, how it …

Acetaminophen: Beyond Pain And Fever-Relieving, Eric R. Blough, Miaozong Wu Nov 2011

Acetaminophen: Beyond Pain And Fever-Relieving, Eric R. Blough, Miaozong Wu

MIIR Faculty Research

Acetaminophen, also known as APAP or paracetamol, is one of the most widely used analgesics (pain reliever) and antipyretics (fever reducer). According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, currently there are 235 approved prescription and over-the-counter drug products containing acetaminophen as an active ingredient. When used as directed, acetaminophen is very safe and effective; however when taken in excess or ingested with alcohol hepatotoxicity and irreversible liver damage can arise. In addition to well known use pain relief and fever reduction, recent laboratory and pre-clinical studies have demonstrated that acetaminophen may also have beneficial effects on blood glucose levels, …
