Carry And Expand: A New Nomadic Interaction Paradigm, Richard B. Arthur Nov 2011

Carry And Expand: A New Nomadic Interaction Paradigm, Richard B. Arthur

Theses and Dissertations

People are nomadic; traveling from place to place. As a user travels, he may need access to his digital information, including his data, applications, and settings. A convenient way to supply this access is to have the user carry that digital information in a portable computer such as a laptop or smart phone. As Moore's Law continues to operate, devices such as smart phones can easily perform the computing necessary for a user's work. Unfortunately, the amount of data a human can receive and convey through such devices is limited. To receive more information humans require more screen real estate. …

Body Image, Self-Esteem, And Sexual Self-Consciousness In Men And Woman As Predicted By Experiences Of Sexual Objectification By Others, Linda Rae Baggett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

As the result of living in a culture that increasingly places importance oh physical appearance, both men and women are sexually objectified by others. This leads to harmful objectification of the self and past research has shown self-objectification to predict decreased self-esteem and greater body image disturbances and sexual self-consciousness. However, the direct effects of sexual objectification by others were not examined. Further, most studies on the topic focused on the experiences of women and did not allow for the exploration of the positive experiences of being sexually objectified, despite evidence that they existed. Therefore, the purpose of this study …

Performance Optimization And Dynamics Control For Large-Scale Data Transfer In Wide-Area Networks, Xukang Lu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Transport control plays an important role in the performance of large-scale scientific and media streaming applications involving transfer of large data sets, media streaming, online computational steering, interactive visualization, and remote instrument control. In general, these applications have two distinctive classes of transport requirements: large-scale scientific applications require high bandwidths to move bulk data across wide-area networks, while media streaming applications require stable bandwidths to ensure smooth media playback. Unfortunately, the widely deployed Transmission Control Protocol is inadequate for such tasks due to its performance limitations. The purpose of this dissertation is to conduct rigorous analytical study of the design …

Security Applications Of Formal Language Theory, Len Sassaman, Meredith L. Patterson, Sergey Bratus, Michael E. Locasto, Anna Shubina

Computer Science Technical Reports

We present an approach to improving the security of complex, composed systems based on formal language theory, and show how this approach leads to advances in input validation, security modeling, attack surface reduction, and ultimately, software design and programming methodology. We cite examples based on real-world security flaws in common protocols representing different classes of protocol complexity. We also introduce a formalization of an exploit development technique, the parse tree differential attack, made possible by our conception of the role of formal grammars in security. These insights make possible future advances in software auditing techniques applicable to static and dynamic …

Hiv-1 Tat Protein Promotes Neuronal Dysfunction Through Disruption Of Micrornas, J Robert Chang, Ruma Mukerjee, Asen Bagashev, Luis Del Valle, Tinatin Chabrashvili, Brian J. Hawkins, Johnny J. He, Bassel E. Sawaya

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Over the last decade, small noncoding RNA molecules such as microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as critical regulators in the expression and function of eukaryotic genomes. It has been suggested that viral infections and neurological disease outcome may also be shaped by the influence of small RNAs. This has prompted us to suggest that HIV infection alters the endogenous miRNA expression patterns, thereby contributing to neuronal deregulation and AIDS dementia. Therefore, using primary cultures and neuronal cell lines, we examined the impact of a viral protein (HIV-1 Tat) on the expression of miRNAs due to its characteristic features such as release …

Standard Furniture, Adam Rogers Nov 2011

Standard Furniture, Adam Rogers

Theses

I seek simplicity through my intention to establish a particular beauty, a certain calm achieved both visually and through the intangible feel of my furniture - itself simply a reservoir for the collection and ordering of possessions. The result will reflect the balance between the order inherent in the modest furniture forms that follow function and the emphasized personal quality of certain components of the whole. Through exercising restraint in form, the central element is emphasized, thereby omitting the unimportant to magnify the important. I chase an elusive beauty and an ethereal quality in my furniture. I intend to explore …
