A Critical Look At A Critical Look – Reply To Sanchirico, Joseph Bankman, David A. Weisbach
A Critical Look At A Critical Look – Reply To Sanchirico, Joseph Bankman, David A. Weisbach
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
This paper responds to claims made by Chris Sanchirico in his paper, A Critical Look at the Economic Argument for Taxing only Labor Income. His paper, in part, criticizes the claims we made in "The Superiority of an Ideal Consumption Tax Over an Ideal Income Tax, 58 Stan. L. Rev. 1413 (2006). We show that he makes at least three critical mistakes. First, he systematically confuses a Haig-Simons tax with tax systems that have small positive or negative taxes on capital. Arguments for taxes on capital are not the same as arguments for a Haig-Simons income tax. Second, he argues …
A Dynamic Inventory Optimization Method Applied To Printer Fleet Management, Surya Saripalli
A Dynamic Inventory Optimization Method Applied To Printer Fleet Management, Surya Saripalli
Theses
Current optimization methods for inventory management of toner cartridges for printer fleets typically focus on aggregate cartridge demand. However, with the development of printer technology, toner consumption algorithms are being developed which can accurately quantify the amount of toner that has been consumed over time, based on print job characteristics. This research introduces a dynamic inventory optimization approach for a fleet of printers over a rolling time horizon. Given, the consumption algorithm for the printer system, the cumulative toner consumed per cartridge per printer can be tracked. A forecasting method is developed which utilizes this toner consumption data for individual …

LnDOTA-tetraamide chelates (DOTA=1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid) have received considerable recent attention as a result of their potential to act as PARACEST contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although PARACEST agents afford several advantages over conventional contrast agents they suffer from substantially higher detection limits; thus, improving the effectiveness of LnDOTA-tetraamide chelates is an important goal. In this study we investigate the potential to extend conformational control of LnDOTA-type ligands to those applicable to PARACEST. Furthermore, the question of whether δ- rather than α-substitution of the pendant arms could be used to control the chelate coordination geometry is addressed. Although δ-substitution does …

Survey Report : Understanding The Preconceptions Of Local Citizens In Tuen Mun Regarding Waste Management, Office Of Service-Learning, Lingnan University
OSL Research Report 研究報告
As a highly developed city, it is surprising to find that proper waste management behavior has not yet been well-established in Hong Kong. In order to investigate the causes of this phenomenon, a study with a sample size of 1,001 was conducted. It has been found that most of the respondents were willing to participate in waste separation at the source, and the majority of them to separate waste were because of environmental protection reason, which contradicts the phenomenon seen in the landfill. The gap between the finding of the study and reality may be due to the fact that …

Improved Ordinary Measure And Image Entropy Theory Based Intelligent Copy Detection Method, Dengpan Ye, Longfei Ma, Lina Wang, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Nowadays, more and more multimedia websites appear in social network. It brings some security problems, such as privacy, piracy, disclosure of sensitive contents and so on. Aiming at copyright protection, the copy detection technology of multimedia contents becomes a hot topic. In our previous work, a new computer-based copyright control system used to detect the media has been proposed. Based on this system, this paper proposes an improved media feature matching measure and an entropy based copy detection method. The Levenshtein Distance was used to enhance the matching degree when using for feature matching measure in copy detection. For entropy …
(1+1)-Dimensional Entropic Gravity, R. B. Mann, Jonas R. Mureika
(1+1)-Dimensional Entropic Gravity, R. B. Mann, Jonas R. Mureika
Physics Faculty Works
We consider the formulation of entropic gravity in two spacetime dimensions. The usual gravitational force law is derived even in the absence of area, as normally required by the holographic principle. A special feature of this perspective concerns the nature of temperature and entropy defined at a point. We argue that the constancy of the gravitational force in one spatial dimension implies the information contained at each point in space is an internal degree of freedom on the manifold, and furthermore is a universal constant, contrary to previous assertions that entropic gravity in one spatial dimension is ill-defined. We give …

Photochemical Modeling Of Glyoxal At A Rural Site: Observations And Analysis From Bearpex 2007, Nicole Bouvier-Brown
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works
We present roughly one month of high time-resolution, direct, in situ measurements of gas-phase glyoxal acquired during the BEARPEX 2007 field campaign. The research site, located on a ponderosa pine plantation in the Sierra Nevada mountains, is strongly influenced by biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs); thus this data adds to the few existing measurements of glyoxal in BVOC-dominated areas. The short lifetime of glyoxal of ~1 h, the fact that glyoxal mixing ratios are much higher during high temperature periods, and the results of a photochemical model demonstrate that glyoxal is strongly influenced by BVOC precursors during high temperature periods. …

A Further Look At The 'Reactance Of A Parallel Rlc Circuit', Kenneth V. Cartwright, Edit J. Kaminsky
A Further Look At The 'Reactance Of A Parallel Rlc Circuit', Kenneth V. Cartwright, Edit J. Kaminsky
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
We show that the maximum impedance of the parallel combination of a resistor R, an inductor L and capacitor C, studied in a previous paper can be found analytically, without using calculus. In fact, we show that the maximum impedance of this parallel combination is just the value of the resistor R and occurs when the driving frequency is equal to 1/ . o LC These results were only demonstrated graphically in the aforementioned paper. We also provide PSpice simulations which verify the theoretical predictions.

Tev And Multi-Wavelength Observations Of Mrk 421 In 2006-2008, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.
Physical Sciences Publications
We report on TeV γ-ray observations of the blazar Mrk 421 (redshift of 0.031) with the VERITAS observatory and the Whipple 10 m Cherenkov telescope. The excellent sensitivity of VERITAS allowed us to sample the TeV γ-ray fluxes and energy spectra with unprecedented accuracy where Mrk 421 was detected in each of the pointings. A total of 47.3 hr of VERITAS and 96 hr of Whipple 10 m data were acquired between 2006 January and 2008 June. We present the results of a study of the TeV γ-ray energy spectra as a function of time and for different flux levels. …

Veritas Observations Of The Tev Binary Ls I+61 Degrees 303 During 2008-2010, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.
Physical Sciences Publications
We present the results of observations of the TeV binary LS I +61° 303 with the VERITAS telescope array between 2008 and 2010, at energies above 300 GeV. In the past, both ground-based gamma-ray telescopes VERITAS and MAGIC have reported detections of TeV emission near the apastron phases of the binary orbit. The observations presented here show no strong evidence for TeV emission during these orbital phases; however, during observations taken in late 2010, significant emission was detected from the source close to the phase of superior conjunction (much closer to periastron passage) at a 5.6 standard deviation (5.6σ) post-trials …

A variant of iterative learning in the limit (cf. Lange and Zeugmann 1996) is studied when a learner gets negative examples refuting conjectures containing data in excess of the target language and uses additional information of the following four types: (a) memorizing up to n input elements seen so far; (b) up to n feedback memberships queries (testing if an item is a member of the input seen so far); (c) the number of input elements seen so far; (d) the maximal element of the input seen so far. We explore how additional information available to such learners (defined and …

Bases Proof For Period (1.1) For Correlation Coefficient, Salim Ismail Algharabi
Bases Proof For Period (1.1) For Correlation Coefficient, Salim Ismail Algharabi
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
This paper investigates the mathematical foundations and properties of the correlation coefficient, specifically focusing on the validation and proof of the interval [-1, 1]. The research addresses the fundamental statistical concept that the correlation coefficient, a measure of the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two variables, must strictly reside within these bounds. By utilizing algebraic derivations and geometric interpretations, the author provides a rigorous "bases proof" to demonstrate why the coefficient cannot exceed 1 or fall below -1. The study explores the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality as a primary mathematical framework for this proof, ensuring that the ratio of …

Analysis Of Migration Models Of Biogeography-Based Optimization Using Markov Theory, Haiping Ma, Daniel J. Simon
Analysis Of Migration Models Of Biogeography-Based Optimization Using Markov Theory, Haiping Ma, Daniel J. Simon
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Biogeography-based optimization (BBO) is a new evolutionary algorithm inspired by biogeography, which involves the study of the migration of biological species between habitats. Previous work has shown that various migration models of BBO result in significant changes in performance. Sinusoidal migration models have been shown to provide the best performance so far. Motivated by biogeography theory and previous results, in this paper a generalized sinusoidal migration model curve is proposed. A previously derived BBO Markov model is used to analyze the effect of migration models on optimization performance, and new theoretical results which are confirmed with simulation results are obtained. …

We derive the eigenvalues of a tridiagonal matrix with a special structure. A conjecture about the eigenvalues was presented in a previous paper, and here we prove the conjecture. The matrix structure that we consider has applications in biogeography theory.
Heterogeneous Rates Of Time Preference And The Decision To Smok, W. Kip Viscusi, Robert L. Scharff
Heterogeneous Rates Of Time Preference And The Decision To Smok, W. Kip Viscusi, Robert L. Scharff
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Individuals with higher personal rates of time preference will be more likely to smoke. Although previous studies have found no evidence of a relationship between smoking and rates of time preference, analysis of implicit rates of time preference associated with workers' wage fatality risk trade-offs indicates that smokers have higher rates of time preference with respect to years of life. Current smokers have an implied rate of time preference of 13.8% as compared to 8.1% for nonsmokers. Current smokers who are blue-collar workers have rates of time preference with respect to years of life of 16.3% compared to 7.8% for …

Contributing Variables To Acceleration And Max Velocity Performance, Leon Alexander Settle
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to determine the prediction values of the squat, power clean, and three commonly used plyometric exercises by track and field coaches (OHB, SLJ, and STJ) to acceleration and max velocity performance. There is sparse research on the effectiveness of standing long jump, standing triple jump, and over head back contributing to athletic performance. The findings from this project may provide practical information to coaches about the five components. The University of New Mexico (UNM) men and women track and field student-athletes, ages 18-24 (n = 28), volunteered for the study. Potential differences in predictability …
An Examination Of Laboratory Activities For Elements Of Inquiry In Arkansas Secondary Biology Courses, Michele E. Snyder
An Examination Of Laboratory Activities For Elements Of Inquiry In Arkansas Secondary Biology Courses, Michele E. Snyder
Theses and Dissertations
In the last 20 years, several panels recommended improving science teaching by incorporating inquiry approaches into K-12 classrooms. These panels assert that inquiry improves student learning in large part by giving students ownership. However, many teachers still present labs that simply call for students to follow written directions. This cookbook approach is the antithesis of inquiry. To take a "snap shot" of biology teaching, I surveyed Arkansas biology teachers to 1) determine teachers' qualifications, 2) assess the labs that they considered their "best" via a rubric that assesses inquiry activities, and 3) discover the reasons teachers valued certain labs. The …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research
The problem of a few interacting fermions in quantum physics has sparked intense interest, particularly in recent years owing to connections with the behaviour of superconductors, fermionic superfluids and finite nuclei. This review addresses recent developments in the theoretical description of four fermions having finite-range interactions, stressing insights that have emerged from a hyperspherical coordinate perspective. The subject is complicated, so we have included many detailed formulae that will hopefully make these methods accessible to others interested in using them. The universality regime, where the dominant length scale in the problem is the two-body scattering length, is particularly stressed, including …
