Historical Vegetation Of Central Southwest Oregon, Based On Glo Survey Notes : Final Report To Usdi Bureau Of Land Management, Medford District, O. Eugene Hickman, John A. Christy

Institute for Natural Resources Publications

Historical vegetation at the time of European settlement is of great interest to both the public and land managers, but is poorly documented. One source of data are the earliest land survey records of the General Land Office (GLO). Rectangular township surveys in Southwest Oregon were initiated in the mid 1850’s as settlers began to claim homesteads in the Bear Creek Valley surrounding what is now Medford. We examined GLO land survey field notes and plats (maps) accompanying the surveys, transcribed GLO landscape data into an Access database, and classified the data set into very general vegetation types for mapping. …

The Properties Of The Stellar Nuclei With The Host Galaxy Morphology In The Acsvcs, Hyun-Chul Lee Oct 2011

The Properties Of The Stellar Nuclei With The Host Galaxy Morphology In The Acsvcs, Hyun-Chul Lee

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We have revisited the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey (ACSVCS), a Hubble Space Telescope program to obtain ACS/WFC g and z bands imaging for a sample of 100 early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. In this study, we examine 51 nucleated early-type galaxies in the ACSVCS in order to look into the relationship between the photometric and structural properties of stellar nuclei and their host galaxies. We morphologically dissect galaxies into five classes. We note that (1) the stellar nuclei of dwarf early-type galaxies (dS0, dE, and dE,N) are generally fainter and bluer with g > 18.95 and (g-z) < 1.40 compared to some brighter and redder counterparts of the ellipticals (E) and lenticular galaxies (S0), (2) the g-band half-light radii of stellar nuclei of all dwarf early-type galaxies (dS0, dE, and dE,N) are smaller than 20 pc and their average is about 4 pc, and (3) the colors of red stellar nuclei with (g - z) > 1.40 in bright …

Horticultural Pest Management And The African Economy: Successes, Challenges And Opportunities In A Changing Global Environment, S. Ekesi, A. Chabi-Olaye, S. Subramanian, C. Borgemeister

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

In many African countries, horticulture is the fastest growing agricultural sub-sector contributing significantly to national incomes. Diverse vegetables, fruits and spices are grown for domestic and export markets. Horticultural exports in Africa has increased by more than 50% in recent years and currently contributes >20% of agricultural exports by volume and income generation. Despite the growth, production has not kept pace with increasing demand due largely to biotic constraints attributed to arthropod pests. Agricultural research aimed at reducing insect pest damage can lead to increased horticultural production and improved rural livelihoods. icipe in collaboration with National Agricultural Research and Extension …

Understanding And Teaching Unequal Probability Of Selection, Humberto Barreto, Manu Raghav Oct 2011

Understanding And Teaching Unequal Probability Of Selection, Humberto Barreto, Manu Raghav

School of Business and Leadership Working Papers

This paper focuses on econometrics pedagogy. It demonstrates the importance of including probability weights in regression analysis using data from surveys that do not use simple random samples (SRS). We use concrete, numerical examples and simulation to show how to effectively teach this difficult material to a student audience. We relax the assumption of simple random sampling and show how unequal probability of selection can lead to biased, inconsistent OLS slope estimates. We then explain and apply probability weighted least squares, showing how weighting the observations by the reciprocal of the probability of inclusion in the sample improves performance. The …

Undergraduate Research Through Nasa Initiatives, Gaffar Gailani, Sidi Berri, Nieves Angulo

Publications and Research

There was a common belief that research should only be introduced at the graduate level or at least the senior undergraduate year. Research in the freshman year was not even a topic for discussion. Today, throughout the City University of New York, colleges are stepping forward and conducting research at all undergraduate levels and achieving good results. Conducting research as part of an internship or with a faculty member, proved to be one of the most effective ways to enhance the skills of the students in STEM by many authors. The department of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design Technology at …

We use newly constructed state-specific data to explore the implications of common modeling choices for measures of research returns. Our results indicate that state-to-state spillover effects are important, that the research and development lag is longer than many studies have allowed, and that misspecification can give rise to significant biases. Across states, the average of the own-state benefit-cost ratios is 21:1, or 32:1 when the spillover benefits to other states are included. These ratios correspond to real internal rates of return of 9 or 10 per annum, much smaller than those typically reported in the literature, partly because we have …

Chronic Fluid Flow Is An Environmental Modifier Of Renal Epithelial Function, Andrew Resnick Oct 2011

Chronic Fluid Flow Is An Environmental Modifier Of Renal Epithelial Function, Andrew Resnick

Physics Faculty Publications

Although solitary or sensory cilia are present in most cells of the body and their existence has been known since the sixties, very little is been known about their functions. One suspected function is fluid flow sensing- physical bending of cilia produces an influx of Ca++, which can then result in a variety of activated signaling pathways. Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is a progressive disease, typically appearing in the 5th decade of life and is one of the most common monogenetic inherited human diseases, affecting approximately 600,000 people in the United States. Because ADPKD is a slowly progressing …

Space-Time Least-Squares Finite-Element Method For Shallow-Water Equations, Shin-Jye Liang, Ying-Chih Chen Oct 2011

Space-Time Least-Squares Finite-Element Method For Shallow-Water Equations, Shin-Jye Liang, Ying-Chih Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, a space-time least-squares finite-element method for the 2D nonlinear shallow-water equations (SWE) is developed. The method can easily handle complex geometry, bed slope (source term), and radiation boundary condition without any special treatment. Other advantages of the method include: high order approximations in space and time can easily be employed, no upwind scheme is needed, as well as the resulting system equations is symmetric and positivedefinite, therefore, can be solved efficiently with the pre-conditioned conjugate gradient method. The model is applied to several benchmark tests, including standing wave in a flat closed basin, propagation of sinusoidal wave …

The Effects Of Expert Witness Testimony On Juror Verdict: Psychiatry Versus Psychology, La Shonine Gandy-Smith Oct 2011

The Effects Of Expert Witness Testimony On Juror Verdict: Psychiatry Versus Psychology, La Shonine Gandy-Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of expert witness testimony on juror verdicts. We, further, assessed whether there would be a difference in the relative influence of MDs and PhD expert witnesses. Undergraduate and graduate students served as mock jurors and were presented with an insanity case which either (a) a PhD testified for the defense and a MD testified for the prosecution or (b) an MD testified for the defense and a PhD testified for the prosecution. After analysis of verdicts, an Insanity Defense Attitudes Survey, and specific witness credibility evaluations indicated no bias toward …

Adaptive-Model Based Self-Tuning Generalized Predictive Control Of A Biodiesel Reactor / Ho Yong Kuen, Yong Kuen Ho Oct 2011

Adaptive-Model Based Self-Tuning Generalized Predictive Control Of A Biodiesel Reactor / Ho Yong Kuen, Yong Kuen Ho

Student Works (2010-2019)

Traditionally, the Recursive Least Squares (RLS) algorithm was used in the Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) framework solely for model adaptation purposes. In this work, the RLS algorithm was extended to also cater for self-tuning of the controller. Specifically, the analytical expressions proposed by Shridhar and Cooper (1997b) for offline tuning of the move suppression weight was deployed for online tuning. This new combination, denoted as the Adaptive-Model Based Self-Tuning Generalized Predictive Control (AS-GPC), contains both model adaptation and selftuning capabilities within the same controller structure. Several RLS algorithms were screened and the Variable Forgetting Factor Recursive Least Squares (VFF-RLS) algorithm …

Alternative Ways Of Developing And Assessing Fluency With Basic Facts, Amy Laponsie Oct 2011

Alternative Ways Of Developing And Assessing Fluency With Basic Facts, Amy Laponsie

Honors Theses

Fluency in mathematics indicates the student has a variety of strategies to use when encountering an unfamiliar or unknown problem. In this study, students were assessed using a one-on-one interview assessment with the researcher. This type of assessment was used to reduce the stress and anxiety students feel during traditional math exams. The students then were grouped based on the correctness of their answers as well as the sophistication of their answers, meaning whether or not they used a strategy or counting to answer the problem. The students participated in thirty minute mini-lessons where they focused on the Making Ten …

A Study Of The Orbits Of The Logarithmic Potential For Galaxies, Sree Ram Valluri, Paul Wiegert, John Drozd, Matt Dasilva

Physics and Astronomy Publications

The logarithmic potential is of great interest and relevance in the study of the dynamics of galaxies. Some small corrections to the work of Contopoulos & Seimenis (1990) who used the method of Prendergast (1982) to find periodic orbits and bifurca- tions within such a potential are presented. The solution of the orbital radial equation for the purely radial logarithmic potential is then considered using the p-ellipse (pre- cessing ellipse) method pioneered by Struck (2006). This differential orbital equation is a special case of the generalized Burgers equation. The apsidal angle is also deter- mined, both numerically as well as …
