The Baby And Infant Screen For Children With Autism Traits: A Proposed Critical Item Algorithm, Santino Vincent Lovullo Jan 2011

The Baby And Infant Screen For Children With Autism Traits: A Proposed Critical Item Algorithm, Santino Vincent Lovullo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since its first description, the definition of autism has varied as a function of emphases on particular defining features, changes to the age of onset, and confusion with other disorders. However, a recurring theme has been the importance of social impairments with evidence that specific social symptoms, such as joint attention deficits, are predictive of autism within the first or second year of life. In addition to the core domains of impairment, autism is associated with various medical conditions, intellectual disability, comorbid psychopathology, and problem behavior. This is alarming considering that there may be a true increase in the disorder’s …

Determinants Of Knowledge Mapping Adoption In Software Maintenance, Joseph K. Lee Jan 2011

Determinants Of Knowledge Mapping Adoption In Software Maintenance, Joseph K. Lee

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Knowledge Maps (KMaps) could be ideally suited for resolving many of the traceability problems in computer software maintenance. This thesis provides an understanding of the various factors that will encourage or impede the software maintenance community to adopt KMaps as part of their process. ABC Company in Perth, Western Australia, was chosen as the research site because it is a multinational software development company with customers in many major cities around the world. Since Knowledge Mapping (KMapping) is relatively new to most software staffers, it was necessary to develop a Software Maintenance KMap prototype. A literature review of KMapping, innovation …

Stability Analysis Of Anchored Rock Slopes Against Plane Failure Subjected To Surcharge And Seismic Loads, Md M. Hossain Jan 2011

Stability Analysis Of Anchored Rock Slopes Against Plane Failure Subjected To Surcharge And Seismic Loads, Md M. Hossain

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The stability analysis of rock slopes has been a challenging task for engineers

because the rock mass constituting the slope often has discontinuities in various

forms, resulting in different types of slope failures. The plane failure is one of the

rock slope failures observed in field situations when the discontinuity is in the form

of joint planes. There are several parameters including surcharge and seismic loads

that govern the stability of the rock slope against plane failure in field projects. The

limit equilibrium approach for the estimation of the factor of safety of the rock slope

against plane failure has …

Looking Smart Is Not The Ultimate Goal: An Examination Of A Gifted And Talented Science Program, Kym S. Tan Jan 2011

Looking Smart Is Not The Ultimate Goal: An Examination Of A Gifted And Talented Science Program, Kym S. Tan

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

At Metropolitan High School (MHS) a gifted and talented science program (GTSP) operates to meet the educational needs of exceptional students. Academic achievement is dependent on many factors including cognitive ability, goal orientation, selfregulation of learning and self-efficacy. Few studies have attempted to investigate the significance of each of these in special populations particularly in the academic field of science. The literature indicates that educational programs should be subject to evaluation, yet such evaluation is not routinely carried out. In a balanced teaching system, components such as curriculum, teaching methods, assessment procedures and classroom environment are aligned so that they …

Comparison Of A Novel Fluorogenic Anti-Fxa Assay With A Central Laboratory Chromogenic Anti-Fxa Assay For Measuring Lmwh Activity In Patient Plasmas, Leanne F. Harris, Vanessa Castro-Lopez, James S. O'Donnell, Anthony J. Killard

Articles

Introduction: Low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) are used worldwide for the treatment and prophylaxis of thromboembolic disorders. Routine laboratory tests are not required due to the predictable pharmacokinetics of LMWHs, with the exception of pregnant patients, children, patients with renal failure, morbid obesity, or advanced age. Anti-Factor Xa (anti-FXa) plasma levels are most often employed in the assessment and guidance of accurate dosing in these patient cohorts. Materials and methods: A LMWH calibration curve was generated using citrated human pooled plasma spiked with pharmacologically relevant concentrations (0–1 U/ml) of two low molecular weight heparins; enoxaparin and tinzaparin. Least squares analysis …

Cooperative Learning And Peer Tutoring To Improve Third-Grade Students’ Test Scores On Grade-Level Assessment, Francina Y. Thurston Jan 2011

Cooperative Learning And Peer Tutoring To Improve Third-Grade Students’ Test Scores On Grade-Level Assessment, Francina Y. Thurston

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to utilize learning strategies that emphasized small-group instructions where students work together cooperatively and with peers to achieve mastery. Traditionally, the classroom practices used in this school lent themselves primarily to whole-class instructions that emphasized competitive and individualistic goals rather than small groups and cooperative practices. The multistrategy used in this study sought to shift the focus of classroom instructions away from what was traditional. However, the introduction of the multistrategy that called for small group teaching required training for teachers and students.

The writer developed several solution strategies that trained students and teachers in …

Evaluation Of Response To Intervention As A Method Of Improving Student Achievement, Ronald Bruce Farquharson Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Response To Intervention As A Method Of Improving Student Achievement, Ronald Bruce Farquharson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to evaluate if implementation of the Response to Intervention (RTI) model had an effect on student academic gains at the target school. The problem that prompted this study was that information on the effectiveness of the RTI model had not yet been determined. The reauthorization of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act allowed the use of the RTI model as a viable alternative for identifying students who may be experiencing academic difficulties rather than the traditional wait-and-fail model. Data and state assessment scores for sixth-grade students indicated that remediation was necessary. The RTI model allows …

Comparison Of 14c And U-Th Ages Of Two Holocene Phreatic Overgrowths On Speleothems From Mallorca (Western Mediterranean): Environmental Implications, Paola Tuccimei, Mark Van Strydonck, Angel Ginés, Joaquín Ginés, Michele Soligo, Igor M. Villa, Joan J. Fornós

International Journal of Speleology

This investigation reports on the comparison between ICP-MS U-Th and AMS 14C ages of Phreatic Overgrowths on Speleothems (POS) from two different caves on the island of Mallorca (Spain). These speleothem encrustations form at the water table of coastal caves in a low-amplitude tide-controlled microenvironment and are used to reconstruct past sea level changes. The aim of this study is to evaluate if this particular type of speleothem is datable using 14C method and to investigate possible problems connected with the incorporation of dead carbon inherited from the dissolution of 14C-free limestone. The results show that 14C ages are strongly …

The subterranean fauna in Portugal has been considered moderately poor with some endemic relicts and it remains …

A Note On The Occurrence Of A Crayback Stalagmite At Niah Caves, Borneo, Joyce Lundberg, Donald A. Mcfarlane Jan 2011

A Note On The Occurrence Of A Crayback Stalagmite At Niah Caves, Borneo, Joyce Lundberg, Donald A. Mcfarlane

International Journal of Speleology

Crayback stalagmites have mainly been reported from New South Wales, Australia. Here we document a small crayback in the entrance of Painted Cave (Kain Hitam), part of the Niah Caves complex in Sarawak, Borneo. Measuring some 65 cm in length and 18 cm in height, this deposit is elongate in the direction of the dominant wind and thus oriented towards the natural tunnel entrance. It shows the classic humpbacked long profile, made up of small transverse segments or plates, in this case the tail extending towards the entrance. The dark blue-green colour down the centre suggests that cyanobacterial growth follows …

The Present Day Genesis And Evolution Of Cave Minerals Inside The Ojo De La Reina Cave (Naica Mine, Mexico), Giovanni Badino, José Maria Calaforra, Paolo Forti, Paolo Garofalo, Laura Sanna Jan 2011

The Present Day Genesis And Evolution Of Cave Minerals Inside The Ojo De La Reina Cave (Naica Mine, Mexico), Giovanni Badino, José Maria Calaforra, Paolo Forti, Paolo Garofalo, Laura Sanna

International Journal of Speleology

Ojo de la Reina is the first and the smallest cave intersected at the -290 level in the Naica Mine (Mexico), therefore it was the first cavity in which the lowering of temperature induced by mine ventilation caused condensation over crystals’ surface since 2005. The consequent dissolution of the gypsum crystals and subsequent condensed water evaporation lead to the deposition of several new minerals, among which some highly soluble Mg/Na compounds (bloedite, epsomite, halite, hexahydrite, kieserite, starkeyite). The single available source of Mg and Na ions in this minerogenetic environment is represented by the huge fluid inclusions widespread within the …

The First Cave Occurrence Of Orpiment (As₂S₃) From The Sulfuric Acid Caves Of Aghia Paraskevi (Kassandra Peninsula, N. Greece), Georgios Lazaridis, Vasilios Melfos, Lambrini Papadopoulou Jan 2011

The First Cave Occurrence Of Orpiment (As₂S₃) From The Sulfuric Acid Caves Of Aghia Paraskevi (Kassandra Peninsula, N. Greece), Georgios Lazaridis, Vasilios Melfos, Lambrini Papadopoulou

International Journal of Speleology

Orpiment, tamarugite and pickeringite occur in close association above the surface of thermal water cave pools in the active sulfuric acid caves of Aghia Paraskevi on the Kassandra peninsula, northern Greece. Gypsum also occurs as small interstitial crystals or encrustations. Orpiment is of high significance since it has not previously been reported as a cave mineral. In addition, tamarugite and pickeringite rarely occur in karst caves. Water from a borehole and a spring is of Na-Cl type and contains traces of CO2 and H2S. The B/Cl ratios indicate seawater participation with a possible mixing with geothermal water …

Black Mn-Fe Crusts As Markers Of Abrupt Palaeoenvironmental Changes In El Soplao Cave (Cantabria, Spain), Fernando Gázquez, Jose Maria Calaforra, Paolo Forti Jan 2011

Black Mn-Fe Crusts As Markers Of Abrupt Palaeoenvironmental Changes In El Soplao Cave (Cantabria, Spain), Fernando Gázquez, Jose Maria Calaforra, Paolo Forti

International Journal of Speleology

Peculiar iron and manganese deposits coating walls, floors and ceilings of many galleries are one of the special features of the El Soplao Cave (Cantabria, Spain). These speleothems appear to have been deposited over wall clay deposits, as well as forming part of flowstones. Structure of crusts is essentially amorphous but several manganese and iron oxides were identified like goethite and birnessite, though all occur with a low degree of crystallinity. In the outer layer of the crusts, alteration iron minerals appear that derive from previous minerals in a process probably mediated by microorganisms. EDX microanalyses report fairly high values …

Mineralogy Of Iza Cave (Rodnei Mountains, N. Romania), Tudor Tămaş, Ferenc Kristály, Lucian Barbu-Tudoran Jan 2011

Mineralogy Of Iza Cave (Rodnei Mountains, N. Romania), Tudor Tămaş, Ferenc Kristály, Lucian Barbu-Tudoran

International Journal of Speleology

The secondary minerals from Iza Cave result from the interactions of karst water and/or cave atmosphere over a variety of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. The cave passages expose at various extents Eocene limestones and conglomerates, Oligocene black shales, Upper Precambrian micaschists, marble and dolomitic marble and associated ore deposits.

Twelve secondary minerals identified in the cave (carbonates, sulfates, phosphates, oxides and hydroxides, and silicates) are presented in this study. Calcite, aragonite, gypsum, brushite and hydroxylapatite are the components of common speleothems in the limestone, dolomite and conglomerate areas of the cave. Ankerite crusts are related to areas with pyrite mineralization …

Apparent Weekly And Daily Earthquake Periodicities In The Western United States, And Evolution Of Wadi Kubbania In Egypt, Ali Hadi Atef Jan 2011

Apparent Weekly And Daily Earthquake Periodicities In The Western United States, And Evolution Of Wadi Kubbania In Egypt, Ali Hadi Atef

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dissertation consists of two separate sections. The first section is on apparent daily and weekly periodicities in earthquake occurrence in the western United State [sic]. Analysis of Apparent Seismicity Rate (ASR) in the western United States confirmed the existence of prominent spectral peaks with a period of 1 and 7 days. The number of recorded earthquakes on Sundays for the duration of 1963-2008 is about 5% higher than that on weekdays, and, more significantly, there is a 9% increase of ASR in the early morning compared with that in the middle of the days. Significant similarities between the spatial …

Development Of A Simple Vibration Model For Predicting The Structural Dynamics Of An Hcci Engine, Jeffery A. Massey Jan 2011

Development Of A Simple Vibration Model For Predicting The Structural Dynamics Of An Hcci Engine, Jeffery A. Massey

Doctoral Dissertations

"The hypothesis tested in this work is that the surface vibration and radiated sound of an engine operating under HCCI combustion is dominated by the free vibration response of the engine's structural components to an impulsive loading brought about by the rapid energy release of the HCCI combustion process. Recent work by the author has shown that classical vibration theory describing the dynamic response of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) oscillator may capture the major characteristics of the engine surface vibrations. Through an experimental investigation of HCCI combustion engine dynamics this model has been developed further.

A band level analysis of measured …

Preliminary Model Development Of Metal Complexation Of Polyester Derivatives Of 2,2'-Biimidazole, Shelonda Rena Taylor Finch Jan 2011

Preliminary Model Development Of Metal Complexation Of Polyester Derivatives Of 2,2'-Biimidazole, Shelonda Rena Taylor Finch

Doctoral Dissertations

"The objective of this study was to develop a chemical model for metal ion complex formation by a macroligand system with multi-metal binding sites using 2,2'-biimidazole as the starting molecule of the ligand system. Prior studies in this laboratory guided the selection of diesters and hydroxyethyl derivatives of 2,2'-biimidazole as model monomers. In addition, metal ion complexation studies with 2,2'-biimidazole derivatives were conducted. As a result, crystal structures of 1,1'-di(methylpropionato)-2,2-biimidazole, 2,2'-bis(1H-imidazolium) dinitrate and silver 2,2'-bis(1H-imidazolium) trinitrate, were reported. The crystal structures indicated a dependence upon the binding ability of the protonated 2,2'-biimidazole and counter ions. transesterification of the diesters and …

Quantum Electrodynamics And Fundamental Constants, Benedikt J. Wundt Jan 2011

Quantum Electrodynamics And Fundamental Constants, Benedikt J. Wundt

Doctoral Dissertations

"The unprecedented precision achieved both in the experimental measurements as well as in the theoretical description of atomic bound states make them an ideal study object for fundamental physics and the determination of fundamental constants. This requires a careful study of the effects from quantum electrodynamics (QED) on the interaction between the electron and the nucleus.

The two theoretical approaches for the evaluation of QED corrections are presented and discussed. Due to the presence of two energy scales from the binding potential and the radiation field, an overlapping parameter has to be used in both the approaches in order to …

Quantum Phase Transitions In The Presence Of Disorder And Dissipation, Chetan Kotabage Jan 2011

Quantum Phase Transitions In The Presence Of Disorder And Dissipation, Chetan Kotabage

Doctoral Dissertations

"A quantum phase transition is a phase transition at absolute zero occurring under variations in an external non-thermal parameter such as magnetic field or pressure. Quantum phase transitions are one among the important topics currently investigated in condensed matter physics. They are observed in various systems, e.g., in the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition in LiHoF₄ or in the superconductor-metal phase transition in nanowires.

A particular class of quantum phase transitions, which is phase transitions in the presence of disorder and dissipation, is investigated here. An example of this class is the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition in Ni₁₋ₓVₓ or CePd1-xRhₓ caused …

Sandwich Structures With Advanced Facings, Cody H. Nguyen Jan 2011

Sandwich Structures With Advanced Facings, Cody H. Nguyen

Doctoral Dissertations

"The purpose of this research is to investigate potential advantages of two innovative designs of sandwich panels. The first design involves sandwich panels with a piece-wise thickness of the facings aiming at two possible outcomes: (I) improved the structural response, i.e. strength and stiffness, without increasing the weight of the structure or (2) reduction in the weight of the structure without a detriment to its structural response. The analysis is conducted analytically using the first-order shear deformation theory and numerically by the finite element analysis of conventional and stepped-wise sandwich panels. The applicability of the first-order shear deformation theory to …

Spiking Neural Networks And Their Applications, Cameron Eric Johnson Jan 2011

Spiking Neural Networks And Their Applications, Cameron Eric Johnson

Doctoral Dissertations

"Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been developed as adaptable, robust function approximators for at least the last quarter-century. They have progressed through two generations, and the third is now under development. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) seek to improve on previous generations in two ways: by using a more biologically-inspired neuron, they are shown to be capable of more complex calculations; incorporating polychronous properties of highly-recurrent networks with delays of different lengths on each synapse to achieve large numbers of possible patterns with relatively few neurons and synapses.

Abstracted spiking neurons have been used as a third-generation activation function in a …

Workforce Planning Models For Semiconductor Manufacturing: Assembly-Test Operations, Shrikant Jarugumilli Jan 2011

Workforce Planning Models For Semiconductor Manufacturing: Assembly-Test Operations, Shrikant Jarugumilli

Doctoral Dissertations

"We present a framework that integrates strategic and operational workforce planning models. Since these models provide decisions for planning horizons with different lengths, the formulation and solution strategy should ensure that the flow of information between these models is both appropriate and consistent.

The single-shift workforce planning problem is formulated as a two-phase goal program. In the first phase, the model allocates the workers to machine groups and identifies the shortage of workers (referred to as gap) followed by the second phase, in which certain constraints are relaxed and the workers are reallocated to the machine groups in order to …

One Pot Synthesis Of Metal, Carbides And Polymeric Aerogels, Naveen K. Chandrasekaran Jan 2011

One Pot Synthesis Of Metal, Carbides And Polymeric Aerogels, Naveen K. Chandrasekaran

Doctoral Dissertations

"Ultra-low density, three-dimensional assemblies of nanoparticles are referred to as aerogels, and typically are derived from supercritical fluid (SCF) drying of wet-gels. Aerogels are generally fragile materials, but that issue has been addressed successfully by X-aerogels, in which the inorganic nanoparticle framework plays the role of the template for the accumulation of polymer that connects covalently and crosslinks the nanoparticles. The resulting materials can be 300x stronger than the native network, for a nominal increase in density by a factor of 3x. Since the exceptional mechanical properties of X-aerogels are traced to the conformal polymer coating, it was reasonable to …

Modeling Hourly Electricity Prices: A Structural Time Series Approach Incorporating Modified Garch Innovations, Edirisinghe Mudiyanselage Asitha Edirisinghe Jan 2011

Modeling Hourly Electricity Prices: A Structural Time Series Approach Incorporating Modified Garch Innovations, Edirisinghe Mudiyanselage Asitha Edirisinghe

Doctoral Dissertations

"The main objective of this research is to develop time series based procedures for modeling day-ahead and real-time hourly electricity prices. Such empirical processes exhibit features that make the direct application of standard time series models infeasible. Four years of hourly day-ahead and real-time electricity price data from the region supplied by the American Electric Power (AEP) company through the PJM Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) and one half years of real-time electricity prices from the MISO RTO are utilized as an empirical basis for developing such procedures. The price data show several features, such as irregular seasonal behavior, weekly and …

Multiple Differential Study Of Fragmentation Processes In 75 Kev Proton-Molecular Hydrogen Collisions, Kisra Nayomal Egodapitiya Jan 2011

Multiple Differential Study Of Fragmentation Processes In 75 Kev Proton-Molecular Hydrogen Collisions, Kisra Nayomal Egodapitiya

Doctoral Dissertations

"Double Differential Cross Sections (DDCS) were measured for single ionization of H₂ by 75 keV proton (p) impact as a function of the projectile scattering angle (θp) for a fixed energy loss (ΔE) for two different target-collimating slit distances, which determined the width of the projectile wave packet (Δx). In one case Δx was larger than the inter-nuclear separation of the H₂ molecule (coherent projectile beam), while for the other case it was much smaller than the inter-nuclear separation (incoherent projectile beam). A Young type interference pattern was observed in the coherent data, but this was not present in the …

Crustal Structure And Evolution Beneath The Colorado Plateau And The Southern Basin And Range Province, Lamuail Bashir Jan 2011

Crustal Structure And Evolution Beneath The Colorado Plateau And The Southern Basin And Range Province, Lamuail Bashir

Doctoral Dissertations

"Stacking of about 15,500 P-to-S receiver functions recorded at 72 USArray and other broadband seismic stations placed on the Colorado Plateau and the SBRP in Arizona revealed systematic spatial variations in crustal Vp/Vs, crustal thickness and amplitude of P-to-S converted phases. Our results reveal that the BRP is characterized by a thin crust (28.2 ± 0.5 km), a mean Vp/Vs of 1.761 ± 0.014 and a mean amplitude (R) of P - to - S converted wave (relative to that of the direct P wave) of 0.181 ± 0.014 that are similar to a typical continental crust, consistent with the …

First-Principles Studies Of Complex Hydrides For Li-Ion Battery And Hydrogen Storage Applications, Timothy Hudson Mason Jan 2011

First-Principles Studies Of Complex Hydrides For Li-Ion Battery And Hydrogen Storage Applications, Timothy Hudson Mason

Doctoral Dissertations

"We employ density functional theory in a computational study of two energy storage systems.

In the first, we explore the thermodynamic viability of light metal hydrides as a high capacity Li-ion battery negative electrode. Given a set of solid-state and gas-phase reactants, we have determined the phase diagram in the Li-Mg-B-N-H system in the grand canonical ensemble as a function of lithium electrochemical potential. We present computational results for several new conversion reactions with predicted capacities between 2400 and 4000 mAhg⁻¹ that are thermodynamically favorable and that do not involve gas evolution. We provide experimental evidence for the reaction pathway …
