Order Acceptance And Scheduling: A Taxonomy And Review, Susan A. Slotnick Jan 2011

Order Acceptance And Scheduling: A Taxonomy And Review, Susan A. Slotnick

Business Faculty Publications

Over the past 20 years, the topic of order acceptance has attracted considerable attention from those who study scheduling and those who practice it. In a firm that strives to align its functions so that profit is maximized, the coordination of capacity with demand may require that business sometimes be turned away. In particular, there is a trade-off between the revenue brought in by a particular order, and all of its associated costs of processing. The present study focuses on the body of research that approaches this trade-off by considering two decisions: which orders to accept for processing, and how …

The Impact Of Infectious Disease On Chronic Disease: A Review Of Contemporary Findings, Wendy Berke Jan 2011

The Impact Of Infectious Disease On Chronic Disease: A Review Of Contemporary Findings, Wendy Berke

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Infectious diseases are among the top causes of death in adults and children. Chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer are among the top causes of death in adults. Associations between bacterial and viral infectious agents and subsequent development of chronic disease have been made in the past but are currently being reexamined with more rigor and specificity. This review examines infectious disease agent causes and associations with cancer, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease, and neurodegenerative disease. These associations will impact future research, surveillance, treatment, and prevention of both infectious and chronic diseases.

Locating Mineral Exploration Targets Using A Geographical Information System, Finnian O'Connor

Conference papers

This paper outlines the research and development of a complete open source geographic information system (GIS) that offers real-time geoprocessing over the Internet. The premise of the geoprocessing is to locate mineral exploration targets that have high potential for success based on parameters chosen by the end-user of the system.

Components integrated in the system include a spatial database PostGIS, a GIS processing engine GRASS, a GIS server GeoServer, a web server Apache, and front-end technologies OpenLayers and GeoExt. Appropriate data was sourced from the Geological Survey of Ireland to be used for the geoprocessing.

With all the components of …

Spatio-Temporal Variations In Soil Moisture And Physicochemical Properties Of A Typical Semiarid Sand-Meadow-Desert Landscape As Influenced By Land Use, L. Duan, T. Liu, X. Wang, G. Wang, L. Ma, Y. Luo Jan 2011

Spatio-Temporal Variations In Soil Moisture And Physicochemical Properties Of A Typical Semiarid Sand-Meadow-Desert Landscape As Influenced By Land Use, L. Duan, T. Liu, X. Wang, G. Wang, L. Ma, Y. Luo

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A good understanding of the interrelations between land cover alteration and changes in hydrologic conditions (e.g., soil moisture) as well as soil physicochemical properties (e.g., fine soil particles and nutrients) is crucial for maintaining the fragile hydrologic and environmental conditions of semiarid land, such as the Horqin Sandy Land in China, but is lacking in existing literature. The objectives of this study were to examine: (1) spatio-temporal variations of soil moisture and physicochemical properties in semiarid land; and (2) how those variations are influenced by land cover alteration. Using the data collected in a 9.71 km2 well-instrumented area of the …

Weighted And Filtered Mutual Information: A Metric For The Automated Creation Of Panoramas From Views Of Complex Scenes, Thomas Keane Jan 2011

Weighted And Filtered Mutual Information: A Metric For The Automated Creation Of Panoramas From Views Of Complex Scenes, Thomas Keane

Theses

To contribute a novel approach in the field of image registration and panorama creation, this algorithm foregoes any scene knowledge, requiring only modest scene overlap and an acceptable amount of entropy within each overlapping view. The weighted and filtered mutual information (WFMI) algorithm has been developed for multiple stationary, color, surveillance video camera views and relies on color gradients for feature correspondence. This is a novel extension of well-established maximization of mutual information (MMI) algorithms. Where MMI algorithms are typically applied to high altitude photography and medical imaging (scenes with relatively simple shapes and affine relationships between views), the WFMI …

Independence Number And Disjoint Theta Graphs, Shinya Fujita, Colton Magnant Jan 2011

Independence Number And Disjoint Theta Graphs, Shinya Fujita, Colton Magnant

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The goal of this paper is to find vertex disjoint even cycles in graphs. For this purpose, define a θ-graph to be a pair of vertices u,v with three internally disjoint paths joining u to v. Given an independence number α and a fixed integer k, the results contained in this paper provide sharp bounds on the order f(k,α) of a graph with independence number α(G)≤α which contains no k disjoint θ-graphs. Since every θ-graph contains an even cycle, these results provide k disjoint even cycles in graphs of order at least f(k,α)+1. We also discuss the relationship between this …

Long Path Lemma Concerning Connectivity And Independence Number, Shinya Fujita, Alexander Halperin, Colton Magnant Jan 2011

Long Path Lemma Concerning Connectivity And Independence Number, Shinya Fujita, Alexander Halperin, Colton Magnant

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We show that, in a k-connected graph G of order n with α(G)=α, between any pair of vertices, there exists a path P joining them with

|P|≥min{n,(k−1)(n−k)/α +k}.

This implies that, for any edge e∈E(G), there is a cycle containing e of length at least

min{n,(k−1)(n−k)/α +k}.

Moreover, we generalize our result as follows: for any choice S of s≤k vertices in G, there exists a tree T whose set of leaves is S with

|T|≥min{n,(k−s+1)(n−k)/α +k}.

Meander Graphs And Frobenius Seaweed Lie Algebras, Colton Magnant, Vincent E. Coll, Anthony Giaquinto Jan 2011

Meander Graphs And Frobenius Seaweed Lie Algebras, Colton Magnant, Vincent E. Coll, Anthony Giaquinto

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The index of a seaweed Lie algebra can be computed from its associated meander graph. We examine this graph in several ways with a goal of determining families of Frobenius (index zero) seaweed algebras. Our analysis gives two new families of Frobenius seaweed algebras as well as elementary proofs of known families of such Lie algebras.

On Weighted Distributions And Mean Advantage Over Inferiors Functions, Broderick O. Oluyede, Norou Diawara Jan 2011

On Weighted Distributions And Mean Advantage Over Inferiors Functions, Broderick O. Oluyede, Norou Diawara

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this note, some fundamental results including relationship be-tween weighted distribution functions and mean advantage over inferi-ors functions are established. Ordering of reliability and/or distribution functions via mean advantage over inferiors functions and related func-tions for parent and weighted reliability functions are presented. Some applications and examples are given.

On An Identity Of Gessel And Stanton And The New Little Göllnitz Identities, Carla D. Savage, Andrew Sills Jan 2011

On An Identity Of Gessel And Stanton And The New Little Göllnitz Identities, Carla D. Savage, Andrew Sills

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We show that an identity of Gessel and Stanton [I. Gessel, D. Stanton, Applications of q-Lagrange inversion to basic hypergeometric series, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 277 (1983) 197, Eq. (7.24)] can be viewed as a symmetric version of a recent analytic variation of the little Göllnitz identities. This is significant, since the Göllnitz–Gordon identities are considered the usual symmetric counterpart to little Göllnitz theorems. Is it possible, then, that the Gessel–Stanton identity is part of an infinite family of identities like those of Göllnitz–Gordon?

Toward this end, we derive partners and generalizations of the Gessel–Stanton identity. We show that …

Hybrid Proofs Of The Q-Binomial Theorem And Other Identities, Dennis Eichhorn, James Mclaughlin, Andrew Sills Jan 2011

Hybrid Proofs Of The Q-Binomial Theorem And Other Identities, Dennis Eichhorn, James Mclaughlin, Andrew Sills

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We give "hybrid" proofs of the q-binomial theorem and other identities. The proofs are "hybrid" in the sense that we use partition arguments to prove a restricted version of the theorem, and then use analytic methods (in the form of the Identity Theorem) to prove the full version.

We prove three somewhat unusual summation formulae, and use these to give hybrid proofs of a number of identities due to Ramanujan.

Finally, we use these new summation formulae to give new partition interpretations of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities and the Rogers-Selberg identities.

Page Layout Analysis And Classification In Complex Scanned Documents, Mustafa Erkilinc Jan 2011

Page Layout Analysis And Classification In Complex Scanned Documents, Mustafa Erkilinc

Theses

Page layout analysis has been extensively studied since the 1980`s, particularly after computers began to be used for document storage or database units. For efficient document storage and retrieval from a database, a paper document would be transformed into its electronic version. Algorithms and methodologies are used for document image analysis in order to segment a scanned document into different regions such as text, image or line regions. To contribute a novel approach in the field of page layout analysis and classification, this algorithm is developed for both RGB space and grey-scale scanned documents without requiring any specific document types, …

Unified Analysis Of Kernel-Based Interior-Point Methods For P *(Κ)-Lcp, Goran Lesaja, C. Roos Jan 2011

Unified Analysis Of Kernel-Based Interior-Point Methods For P *(Κ)-Lcp, Goran Lesaja, C. Roos

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We present an interior-point method for the P∗(κ)-linear complementarity problem (LCP) that is based on barrier functions which are defined by a large class of univariate functions called eligible kernel functions. This class is fairly general and includes the classical logarithmic function and the self-regular functions, as well as many non-self-regular functions as special cases. We provide a unified analysis of the method and give a general scheme on how to calculate the iteration bounds for the entire class. We also calculate the iteration bounds of both long-step and short-step versions of the method for several …

Core Compactness And Diagonality In Spaces Of Open Sets, Francis Jordan, Frédéric D. Mynard Jan 2011

Core Compactness And Diagonality In Spaces Of Open Sets, Francis Jordan, Frédéric D. Mynard

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We investigate when the space OX of open subsets of a topological space X endowed with the Scott topology is core compact. Such conditions turn out to be related to infraconsonance of X, which in turn is characterized in terms of coincidence of the Scott topology of OX × OX with the product of the Scott topologies of OX at (X,X). On the other hand, we characterize diagonality of OX endowed with the Scott convergence and show that this space can be diagonal without being pretopological. New examples are provided to clarify the relationship between pretopologicity, topologicity and diagonality of …

Abundance Of Eukaryotic Microbes In The Deep Subtropical North Atlantic, Danielle Morgan-Smith, Gerhard J. Herndl, Hendrik M. Van Aken, Alexander B. Bochdansky Jan 2011

Abundance Of Eukaryotic Microbes In The Deep Subtropical North Atlantic, Danielle Morgan-Smith, Gerhard J. Herndl, Hendrik M. Van Aken, Alexander B. Bochdansky

OES Faculty Publications

The meso- and bathypelagic ocean comprises the largest habitat on earth, yet we know very little about the distribution and activity of protists in this environment. These small eukaryotes are responsible for controlling bacterial abundance in the surface ocean and are major players in the material and energy transfer of pelagic food webs. In this paper, we quantify microbial eukaryotes in the deep North Atlantic, as well as provide a basic characterization of eukaryote community changes through the water column. To this end, we counted organisms using 2 different approaches: (1) catalyzed reporter deposition fluorescence in situ hybridization (CARD-FISH, also …

Cascading Migrations And Implications For Vertical Fluxes In Pelagic Ecosystems, Stephen M. Bollens, Gretchen Rollwagen-Bollens, Joel A. Quenette, Alexander B. Bochdansky Jan 2011

Cascading Migrations And Implications For Vertical Fluxes In Pelagic Ecosystems, Stephen M. Bollens, Gretchen Rollwagen-Bollens, Joel A. Quenette, Alexander B. Bochdansky

OES Faculty Publications

Diel vertical migration is widespread across diverse taxa in the world's lakes and seas, yet its biogeochemical consequences are still poorly understood. The biologically mediated vertical flux of material in the ocean (also known as the "biological pump") is a matter of major interest and concern, as it is thought to play an important role in regulating ocean carbon storage, and by extension, the global carbon cycle. Recent studies spanning multiple trophic levels from fish to dinoflagellates have led us to a concept of coupled vertical migrations that we refer to as "cascading migrations". That is, migrations that …

Modern Dirty Sea Ice Characteristics And Sources: The Role Of Anchor Ice, Dennis A. Darby, Wesley B. Myers, Martin Jakobsson, Ignatius Rigor Jan 2011

Modern Dirty Sea Ice Characteristics And Sources: The Role Of Anchor Ice, Dennis A. Darby, Wesley B. Myers, Martin Jakobsson, Ignatius Rigor

OES Faculty Publications

Extensive dirty ice patches with up to 7 kg m-2 sediment concentrations in layers of up to 10 cm thickness were encountered in 2005 and 2007 in numerous areas across the central Arctic. The Fe grain fingerprint determination of sources for these sampled dirty ice floes indicated both Russian and Canadian sources, with the latter dominating. The presence of benthic shells and sea weeds along with thick layers (2-10 cm) of sediment covering 5-10 m2 indicates an anchor ice entrainment origin as opposed to suspension freezing for some of these floes. The anchor ice origin might explain the …

Strain HIMB100 is a planktonic marine bacterium in the class Alphaproteobacteria. This strain is of interest because it is one of the first known isolates from a globally ubiquitous clade of marine bacteria known as SAR116 within the family Rhodospirillaceae. Here we describe preliminary features of the organism, together with the draft genome sequence and annotation. This is the second genome sequence of a member of the SAR116 clade. The 2,458,945 bp genome contains 2,334 protein-coding and 42 RNA gene

Evidence From The Florida Straits For Younger Dryas Ocean Circulation Changes, Jean Lynch-Stieglitz, Matthew W. Schmidt, William B. Curry Jan 2011

Evidence From The Florida Straits For Younger Dryas Ocean Circulation Changes, Jean Lynch-Stieglitz, Matthew W. Schmidt, William B. Curry

OES Faculty Publications

The waters passing through the Florida Straits today reflect both the western portion of the wind-driven subtropical gyre and the northward flow of the upper waters which cross the equator, compensating North Atlantic Deep Water export as part of the large-scale Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. It has been postulated from various lines of evidence that the overturning circulation was weaker during the Younger Dryas cold event of the last deglaciation. We show here that the contrast in the oxygen isotopic composition of benthic foraminiferal tests across the Florida Current is reduced during the Younger Dryas. This most likely reflects a …

Meridional Shifts In The Marine Itcz And The Tropical Hydrologic Cycle Over The Last Three Glacial Cycles, Matthew W. Schmidt, Howard J. Spero Jan 2011

Meridional Shifts In The Marine Itcz And The Tropical Hydrologic Cycle Over The Last Three Glacial Cycles, Matthew W. Schmidt, Howard J. Spero

OES Faculty Publications

Paleoproxy studies show a strong correlation between tropical climate and high-latitude temperature variability recorded in the Greenland ice cores over the last glacial cycle. In particular, abrupt cooling events in the Greenland Ice Sheet Project II δ18O ice record appear synchronous with a southward migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) in the Atlantic, a weakening of the Indian and East Asian monsoon systems, and a strengthening of the South American monsoon system. Because this high-to-low-latitude climate teleconnection significantly alters the tropical hydrologic cycle around the globe, it plays a critical role in regulating global climate on glacial-interglacial …

Florida Straits Deglacial Temperature And Salinity Change: Implications For Tropical Hydrologic Cycle Variability During The Younger Dryas, Matthew W. Schmidt, Jean Lynch-Stieglitz Jan 2011

Florida Straits Deglacial Temperature And Salinity Change: Implications For Tropical Hydrologic Cycle Variability During The Younger Dryas, Matthew W. Schmidt, Jean Lynch-Stieglitz

OES Faculty Publications

The prevailing paradigm of abrupt climate change holds that rapid shifts associated with the most extreme climate swings of the last glacial cycle were forced by changes in the strength and northward extension of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), resulting in an abrupt reorganization of atmospheric circulation patterns with global teleconnections. To determine the timing of tropical Atlantic atmospheric circulation changes over the past 21 ka BP, we reconstruct high resolution sea surface temperature and δ18OSW (a proxy for surface salinity) records based on Mg/Ca ratios and oxygen isotope measurements in the planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber from …

Lithospheric Control On The Spatial Pattern Of Azores Hotspot Seafloor Anomalies: Constraints From A Model Of Plume-Triple Junction Interaction, Jennifer E. Georgen Jan 2011

Lithospheric Control On The Spatial Pattern Of Azores Hotspot Seafloor Anomalies: Constraints From A Model Of Plume-Triple Junction Interaction, Jennifer E. Georgen

OES Faculty Publications

The Azores hotspot is located near a plate boundary triple junction (TJ) consisting of the Terceira Rift (TER) and two branches of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). The seafloor expression of the Azores hotspot has a complex spatial pattern. Latitudinal anomalies in seafloor depth and other data along the MAR extend farther to the south of the inferred location of the mantle heterogeneity than to the north. Longitudinal anomalies span a greater distance to the east of the MAR (along the TER) than to the west. A finite element model is used to investigate how the divergence of three plates away …

Discrimination Of Surface And Volume States In Fully Depleted Field-Effect Devices On Thick Insulator Substrates, Robert Manley Jan 2011

Discrimination Of Surface And Volume States In Fully Depleted Field-Effect Devices On Thick Insulator Substrates, Robert Manley

Theses

The behavior of electronic devices fabricated on thin, lightly doped semiconductor layers can be significantly influenced by very low levels of non-ideal charge states. Such devices typically operate in a fully depleted mode, and can exhibit significantly different electrical properties and characteristics than their bulk material counterparts. Traditional interpretation of device characteristics may identify the existence of such non-idealities, but fail to ascertain if the origin is from within the semiconductor layer or associated with the interfaces to adjacent dielectric materials. This leads to ambiguity in how to rectify the behavior and improve device performance. Characterizing non-idealities through electrical means …

Full-Newton-Step Interior-Point Method For The Linear Complementarity Problems, H.K. Pubudu Kaluarachchi Jan 2011

Full-Newton-Step Interior-Point Method For The Linear Complementarity Problems, H.K. Pubudu Kaluarachchi

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, we present a new Interior-Point Method (IPM) for monotone Linear Complementarity Problem (LPC). The advantage of the method is that it uses full Newton-steps, thus, avoiding the calculation of the step size at each iteration. However, by suitable choice of parameters the iterates are forced to stay in the neighborhood of the central path, hence, still guaranteeing the global convergence of the method under strict feasibility assumption. The number of iterations necessary to find 2-approximate solution of the problem matches the best known iteration bounds for these types of methods. The preliminary implementation of the method and …

Real-Time Traffic Estimation Using Data Expansion, Roger Lederman, Laura Wynter Jan 2011

Real-Time Traffic Estimation Using Data Expansion, Roger Lederman, Laura Wynter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a method for estimating missing real-time traffic volumes on a road network using both historical and real-time traffic data. The method was developed to address urban transportation networks where a non-negligible subset of the network links do not have real-time link volumes, and where that data is needed to populate other real-time traffic analytics. Computation is split between an offline calibration and a real-time estimation phase. The offline phase determines link-to-link splitting probabilities for traffic flow propagation that are subsequently used in real-time estimation. The real-time procedure uses current traffic data and is efficient enough to scale …
