Free-ranging wildlife, such as feral swine (Sus scrofa), harbor a variety of diseases that are transmissible to livestock and could negatively impact agricultural production. Information is needed regarding the exposure and infection rates of Mycobacterium bovis and many other diseases and parasites in feral swine occurring in the Texas border region. Our main objective was to determine exposure rates and possible infection rates of M. bovis in feral swine by opportunistically sampling animals from the Texas border region. From June to September 2010, we obtained samples from 396 feral swine and tested 98 samples for M. bovis by histopathology and …

Recently a theoretical analysis of PCR efficiency has been published by Booth et al., (2010). The PCR yield is the product of three efficiencies: (i) the annealing efficiency is the fraction of templates that form binary complexes with primers during annealing, (ii)the polymerase binding efficiency is the fraction of binary complexes that bind to polymerase to form ternary complexes and (iii)the elongation efficiency is the fraction of ternary complexes that extend fully. Yield is controlled by the smallest of the three efficiencies and control could shift from one type of efficiency to another over the course of a PCR experiment. …

This study employs survey data from the Center for Community College Student Engagement to examine the similarities and differences that exist across student-level domains in terms of student engagement in community colleges. In total, the sample used in the analysis pools data from 663 community colleges and includes more than 320,000 students. Using data-mining techniques to discover a parsimonious number of natural clusters and, in turn, a k-means cluster analysis as a means of revealing a naturally occurring typology of engagement patterns, our findings reveal that support service utilization is the most distinguishing feature of the similarities and dissimilarities across …

Water for irrigation is a major limitation to agricultural production in many parts of the world. Use of waters with elevated levels of salinity is one likely option to meet the supply of increased demands. The sources of these waters include drainage water generated by irrigated agriculture, municipal wastewater, and poor quality groundwater. Soil salinity leaching requirements that were established several decades ago were based on steady-state conditions. Recently transient-state models have been developed that potentially can more correctly predict the dynamics of the chemical–physical–biological interactions in an agricultural system. The University of California Center for Water Resources appointed a …

Performance Of Extended Shuttleworth‐Wallace Model For Estimating And Partitioning Of Evapotranspiration In A Partial Residue‐Covered Subsurface Drip‐Irrigated Soybean Field, Lameck O. Odhiambo, Suat Irmak
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Estimation of actual evapotranspiration (ET), especially its partitioning into plant transpiration (T) and soil evaporation (E), in agricultural fields is important for effective soil water management and conservation and for understanding the interactions between ET, T, and E with the management practices. Direct field measurements of ET, T, and E rates are difficult and costly; hence, mathematical models are used for estimating them. The objective of this study was to evaluate the practical applicability of the Shuttleworth‐Wallace (S‐W) model to estimate and partition ET in a subsurface drip‐irrigated soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) field with partial residue cover. While its …

Tree height and crown allometries reflect adaptations for resource acquisition and structural stability, as well as plastic responses to a heterogeneous environment. While both light and soil resources limit growth and influence competitive responses in tropical forests, the effects of belowground resources on allometries are less understood, especially within the understory. To characterize outcomes of tree competition along an edaphic resource gradient, we quantified variation in height and crown allometries of six Bornean tree species from contrasting regeneration niches (lightdemanding vs. shade-tolerant) on two soil habitats (clay-fine loam and sandy loam) within a 52-ha forest dynamics plot. Using empiricallyfit allometric …

Dur3 Is The Major Urea Transporter In Candida Albicans And Is Co-Regulated With The Urea Amidolyase Dur1,2, Dhammika H. M. L. P Navarathna, Aditi Das, Joachim Morschhauser, Kenneth W. Nickerson, David D. Roberts
Kenneth Nickerson Papers
Hemiascomycetes, including the pathogen Candida albicans, acquire nitrogen from urea using the urea amidolyase Dur1,2, whereas all other higher fungi use primarily the nickel-containing urease. Urea metabolism via Dur1,2 is important for resistance to innate host immunity in C. albicans infections. To further characterize urea metabolism in C. albicans we examined the function of seven putative urea transporters. Gene disruption established that Dur3, encoded by orf 19.781, is the predominant transporter. [14C]Urea uptake was energy-dependent and decreased approximately sevenfold in a dur3D mutant. DUR1,2 and DUR3 expression was strongly induced by urea, whereas the other putative transporter genes …

Environmental And Genetic Perturbations Reveal Different Networks Of Metabolic Regulation, Anthony J. Greenberg, Sean R. Hacket, Lawrence G. Harshman, Andrew G. Clark
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Progress in systems biology depends on accurate descriptions of biological networks. Connections in a regulatory network are identified as correlations of gene expression across a set of environmental or genetic perturbations. To use this information to predict system behavior, we must test how the nature of perturbations affects topologies of networks they reveal. To probe this question, we focused on metabolism of Drosophila melanogaster. Our source of perturbations is a set of crosses among 92 wild-derived lines from five populations, replicated in a manner permitting separate assessment of the effects of genetic variation and environmental fluctuation. We directly assayed activities …

Electron Attachment To Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Components: Cyanoacetic Acid, Alberto Modelli, Paul Burrow
Paul Burrow Publications
The energies of electron attachment associated with temporary occupation of the lower-lying virtual orbitals of cyanoacetic acid (CAA), proposed as a possible component of dye-sensitized solar cells, and its derivative methyl cyanoacetate (MCA) are measured in the gas phase with electron transmission spectroscopy (ETS). The corresponding orbital energies of the neutral molecule, supplied by B3LYP/6-31G(d) calculations and scaled using an empirically calibrated linear equation, are compared with the experimental vertical attachment energies (VAEs). The vertical and adiabatic electron affinities are also evaluated at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d) level as the anion/neutral total energy difference. Dissociative electron attachment spectroscopy …

We report orientational imaging of the polarization distribution in nanostructured ferroelectric copolymer of polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) and collagen fibrils using vertical and lateral modes of piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). In PVDF-TrFE, detection of azimuthal variations in the lateral PFM signal is attributed to the alignment of the molecular chains along different directions. Local switching in PVDF-TrFE is shown to proceed via 120 degrees or 180 degrees rotation of dipoles around the molecular chain, depending upon the strength of the applied electric field. Analysis of the vertical and lateral PFM signals in collagen reveals polar anisotropy of the electromechanical properties along …

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR), and thermoluminescence (TL) are used to characterize the primary electron and hole trapping centers in a lithium tetraborate (Li2B4O7) crystal doped with Ag+. Three defects, two holelike and one electronlike, are observed after exposure at room temperature to 60 kV x-rays. The as-grown crystal contains both interstitial Ag+ ions and Ag+ ions substituting for Liþ ions. During the irradiation, substitutional Ag+ ions (4d10) trap holes and two distinct Ag2+ centers (4d9) are formed. These Ag2+ …

The 4d → 4f Fano resonances for various rare earth doped GaN thin films (RE = Gd, Er, Yb) were investigated using synchrotron photoemission spectroscopy. The resonant photoemission Fano profiles show that the major Gd and Er rare earth 4f weight is at about 5–6 eV below the valence band maximum, similar to the 4f weights in the valence band of many other rare earth doped semiconductors. For Yb, there is very little resonant enhancement of the valence band of Yb doped GaN, consistent with a largely 4f14 occupancy.

We present a direct measurement of the mass difference between top and antitop quarks (∆m) in lepton + jets tt final states using the ‘‘matrix element’’ method. The purity of the lepton + jets sample is enhanced for tt events by identifying at least one of the jets as originating from a b quark. The analyzed data correspond to 3.6 fb-1 of pp collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV acquired by D0 in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The combination of the e + jets and µ + jets channels yields ∆m =0.8 ± 1,8 stat ± 0.5(syst) …

We present an updated measurement of the anomalous like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry AbSl for semileptonic b-hadron decays in 9.0 fb-1 of pp collisions recorded with the D0 detector at a center-of-mass energy of √s= 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We obtain Absl = (-0.787 ± 0.172 (stat) ± 0.093 (syst)) %. This result differs by 3.9 standard deviations from the prediction of the standard model and provides evidence for anomalously large CP violation in semileptonic neutral B decay. The dependence of the asymmetry on the muon impact parameter is consistent with the hypothesis that …

We present a measurement of forward-backward asymmetry in top quark-antiquark production in proton-antiproton collisions in the final state containing a lepton and at least four jets. Using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1, collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, we measure the tt̅ forward-backward asymmetry to be (9.2 ± 3.7)% at the reconstruction level. When corrected for detector acceptance and resolution, the asymmetry is found to be (19.6 ± 6.5)%. We also measure a corrected asymmetry based on the lepton from a top quark decay, found to be (15.2± …

Electroweak production of the top quark is measured for the first time in pp collisions at √s= 7 TeV, using a data set collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. With an event selection optimized for t-channel production, two complementary analyses are performed. The first one exploits the special angular properties of the signal, together with background estimates from the data. The second approach uses a multivariate analysis technique to probe the compatibility with signal topology expected from electroweak top-quark production. The combined measurement of the …

We present a measurement of the ratio of top quark branching fractions R= B(t→Wb)/B(t→Wq), where q can be a d, s, or b quark, in the lepton + jets and dilepton tt̅ final states. The measurement uses data from 5.4 fb-1 of pp̅ collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We measure R = 0.90±0.04, and we extract the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element │Vtb│ as │Vtb│= 0.95 ± 0.02, assuming unitarity of the 3X3 CKM matrix.

The inclusive jet cross section is measured in pp collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeVat the Large Hadron Collider using the CMS experiment. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb-1. The measurement is made for jet transverse momenta in the range 18–1100 GeVand for absolute values of rapidity less than 3. The measured cross section extends to the highest values of jetpT ever observed and, within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties, is generally in agreement with next-to-leadingorder perturbative QCD predictions.

A study of events with missing transverse energy and an energetic jet is performed using pp collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. An excess of these events over standard model contributions is a signature of new physics such as large extra dimensions and unparticles. The number of observed events is in good agreement with the prediction of the standard model, and significant extension of the current limits on parameters of new physics benchmark models is …

Exchange coupled magnetic hard layer/soft layer thin films show a variety of complex magnetization reversal mechanisms depending on the hierarchy of interaction strengths within and between the films. Magnetization reversal can include uniform rotation, soft layer biasing, as well as exchange spring behavior. We investigate the magnetization reversal of a CoPt/Permalloy/Ta/Permalloy heterostructure. Here, Stoner-Wohlfarth-type uniform magnetization rotation of the virtually free Permalloy layer and exchange spring behavior of the strongly pinned Permalloy layer are found in the same sample. We investigate the complex magnetization reversal by polarized neutron reflectometry, magnetometry, and magneto-transport. The synergy of combining these experimental methods together …

Ferroelectric materials are characterized by spontaneous electric polarization that can be reversed by inverting an external electric field. Owing to their unique properties, ferroelectric materials have found broad applications in microelectronics, computers, and transducers. Water molecules are dipolar and thus ferroelectric alignment of water molecules is conceivable when water freezes into special forms of ice. Although the ferroelectric ice XI has been proposed to exist on Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto, evidence of a fully protonordered ferroelectric ice is still elusive. To date, existence of ferroelectric ice with partial ferroelectric alignment has been demonstrated only in thin films of ice grown …

Elastic Properties Of Poly(Vinyldene Fluoride) (Pvdf) Crystals: A Density Functional Theory Study, Yong Pei, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
We computed structural and elastic properties of totally nine phases of poly(vinyldene fluoride) (PVDF) crystals using the density-functional theory (DFT) method with and without inclusion of the dispersion corrections. In addition to the four known crystalline forms, mechanic properties of five theoretically predicted crystalline forms of PVDF are also investigated. The all-trans form Ip exhibits the largest cohesive energy, bulk, and Young’s modulus among the nine crystalline forms. The DFT calculations suggest that the δ crystalline forms (IIIau, IIIpu, IIIpd, and IIIad) possess poor chain rigidity among the nine PVDF …

The structural and electronic effects of isoelectronic substitution by Ag and Cu atoms on gold cluster anions in the size range between 13 and 15 atoms are studied using a combination of photoelectron spectroscopy and first-principles density functional calculations. The most stable structures of the doped clusters are compared with those of the undoped Au clusters in the same size range. The joint experimental and theoretical study reveals a new C3v symmetric isomer for Au13 −, which is present in the experiment, but has hitherto not been recognized. The global minima of Au14 − and Au …

Bob Katz will be well remembered for his enthusiasm and strong personality. In a scientific dispute, few indeed could match his wit or his sense of humor or survive the cutting logic of his arguments. To those who had appreciation for his science and his personality, he was truly a great scientist and a master teacher. There are many people around the world who will remember Bob Katz for what he offered them and for the way he showed them what truth in science is.
The Katz Model, developed at that time for solid-state detectors and for cell cultures, relates …

Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This research article presents a past, present and future meta analysis of information systems offshoring (ISO) research over the 2000-2010 time period. ISO has emerged as a significant sourcing strategy adopted by many organizations to manage, support and deliver their information system needs. Across the selected academic articles our findings compare research methodologies applied, client vs. vendor perspectives studied and ISO topic areas investigated. Interesting results emerge in the range and evolution of ISO research. As a result of our analysis, our findings clearly indicate areas of need for future ISO researchers to consider when conducting future ISO research.
