Weak-Projective Dimensions, Mohammad Javad Nikmehr, Zahra Poormahmood, Reza Nikandish Jan 2011

Weak-Projective Dimensions, Mohammad Javad Nikmehr, Zahra Poormahmood, Reza Nikandish

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, the notions of weak-projective modules and weak-projective dimension over commutative domain R are given. It is shown that over semisimple rings with weak global dimension 1, these modules are equivalent to weak-injective modules. The weak-projective dimension measures how far away a domain is from being a Prüfer domain. Several properties of these modules are also presented.

Uniform L1 Behavior Of A Time Discretization Method For A Volterra Integrodifferential Equation With Convex Kernel; Stability, Charles B. Harris, Richard D. Noren Jan 2011

Uniform L1 Behavior Of A Time Discretization Method For A Volterra Integrodifferential Equation With Convex Kernel; Stability, Charles B. Harris, Richard D. Noren

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

We study stability of a numerical method in which the backward Euler method is combined with order one convolution quadrature for approximating the integral term of the linear Volterra integrodifferential equation u'(t) + ∫0 β (t - s)Au(s) ds = 0, t ≥ 0, u(0) = u0, which arises in the theory of linear viscoelasticity. Here A is a positive self-adjoint densely defined linear operator in a real Hilbert space, and β (t) is locally integrable, nonnegative, nonincreasing, convex, and -β'(t) is convex. We establish stability of the method under these hypotheses on β(t). Thus, …

Art Speaks : Enhancing K-12 Curriculum Through Multicultural Community Public Art, Julie Mejia Jan 2011

Art Speaks : Enhancing K-12 Curriculum Through Multicultural Community Public Art, Julie Mejia

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Public art is more than outdoor art. It has the potential of being an educational tool. Multicultural community public art can be integrated into core subjects, enhancing students’ learning through both critical thinking and multiculturalism. For this reason, it can be a great asset in the K-12 educational system. Furthermore, it is a way to elevate the status of art in K-12 education, granting it the importance it deserves. This research examines how multicultural community public art can be incorporated into the K-12 curriculum by analyzing literature and conducting interviews.

The National Council Of Teachers Of English And Federal Education Policy, 1958-1966, Curtis Mason Jan 2011

The National Council Of Teachers Of English And Federal Education Policy, 1958-1966, Curtis Mason

Dissertations

Following the launching of Sputnik in 1957, Congress passed the National Defense Education Act of 1958 that primarily funded research for the teaching of science, foreign language, and math. English was omitted, but in 1961, due to persuading from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), Congress funded a program that established institutes and centers for research for the teaching of English.

In my research I argue that in order to secure federal funding, the NCTE altered its formal mission to accommodate popular educational rhetoric. Ironically, after achieving federal funding for curricula research one outcome was a recommendation for …

Intelligent Buildings: An Investigation Into Current And Emerging Security Vulnerabilities In Automated Building Systems Using An Applied Defeat Methodology, David J. Brooks Jan 2011

Intelligent Buildings: An Investigation Into Current And Emerging Security Vulnerabilities In Automated Building Systems Using An Applied Defeat Methodology, David J. Brooks

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

Intelligent Buildings (IB) have become increasing popular during the past decade, driven through the need to reduce energy, have more reactive and safer buildings, and increase productivity. IB integrate many systems that were in the past isolated from each other, including fire and life safety, HVAC, lighting, security, etc. Facilities contain commercial-in-confidence material and other valued assets; however, IB are integrated through open and common data communication protocols and hardware, leaving facilities exposed to external and internal threats. The study presents an investigation into IB, based on a defeat evaluation methdology. IB vulnerabilities considered two areas, namely physical and software …

Intelligence Analysis And Threat Assessment: Towards A More Comprehensive Model Of Threat, Charles Vandepeer Jan 2011

Intelligence Analysis And Threat Assessment: Towards A More Comprehensive Model Of Threat, Charles Vandepeer

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

A central focus of intelligence is the identification, analysis and assessment of threat. However, as acknowledged by intelligence practitioners, threat assessment lags behind the related field of risk assessment. This paper highlights how definitions of threat currently favoured by intelligence agencies are primarily based on threatening entities alone. Consequently, assessments of threat are almost singularly concerned with understanding an identified enemy’s intentions and capabilities. This ‘enemy-centric’ approach to intelligence analysis has recently come in for criticism. In particular, the shortcomings of the current approach become apparent where the focus of intelligence analysis is on threats from difficult-to-identify sub-state or non-state …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

High aerosol loading over the northern Indian subcontinent can result in poor air quality leading to human health consequences and climate perturbations. The international 2008 TIGERZ experiment intensive operational period (IOP) was conducted in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) around the industrial city of Kanpur (26.51 degrees N, 80.23 degrees E), India, during the premonsoon (April-June). Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) Sun photometers performed frequent measurements of aerosol properties at temporary sites distributed within an area covering similar to 50 km(2) around Kanpur to characterize pollution and dust in a region where complex aerosol mixtures and semi-bright surface effects complicate satellite retrieval …

Identifying Factors That Increase The Likelihood For Alcohol-Induced Blackouts In The Prepartying Context, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Shannon Kenney, Andrew Lac, Eric Pedersen Jan 2011

Identifying Factors That Increase The Likelihood For Alcohol-Induced Blackouts In The Prepartying Context, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Shannon Kenney, Andrew Lac, Eric Pedersen

Heads Up!

The present study examined risk factors related to “blacking out” (e.g., temporary periods of memory loss during drinking) during preparty drinking events (i.e., pregaming, predrinking). Participants were students from two universities on the West Coast who reported past month prepartying (N = 2,546) in online surveys administered in the fall of 2008. Among these students, 25% (n = 636) reported blacking out during at least one occasion in which they prepartied in the past month. A logistic regression model underscored that Greek student affiliation, family history of alcohol abuse, frequency of prepartying, and both playing drinking games and …

Robustness, Weak Stability, And Stability In Distribution Of Adaptive Filteringalgorithms Under Model Mismatch, Ben G. Fitzpatrick, G. Yin, Le Yi Wang Jan 2011

Robustness, Weak Stability, And Stability In Distribution Of Adaptive Filteringalgorithms Under Model Mismatch, Ben G. Fitzpatrick, G. Yin, Le Yi Wang

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

This work is concerned with robustness, convergence, and stability of adaptive filtering (AF) type algorithms in the presence of model mismatch. The algorithms under consideration are recursive and have inherent multiscale structure. They can be considered as dynamic systems, in which the `state' changes much more slowly than the perturbing noise. Beyond the existing results on adaptive algorithms, model mismatch significantly affects convergence properties of AF algorithms, raising issues of algorithm robustness. Weak convergence and weak stability (i.e., recurrence) under model mismatch are derived. Based on the limiting stochastic differential equations of suitably scaled iterates, stability in distribution is established. …

Heavy Episodic Drinking On College Campuses: Does Changing The Legal Drinking Age Make A Difference?, Jawaid W. Rasul, Robert G. Rommel, Geoffrey M. Jacquez, Ben G. Fitzpatrick, Azmy S. Ackleh, Neal Simonsen, Richard Scribner Jan 2011

Heavy Episodic Drinking On College Campuses: Does Changing The Legal Drinking Age Make A Difference?, Jawaid W. Rasul, Robert G. Rommel, Geoffrey M. Jacquez, Ben G. Fitzpatrick, Azmy S. Ackleh, Neal Simonsen, Richard Scribner

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

This article extends the compartmental model previously developed by Scribner et al. in the context of college drinking to a mathematical model of the consequences of lowering the legal drinking age. Method: Using data available from 32 U.S. campuses, the analyses separate underage and legal age drinking groups into an eight-compartment model with different alcohol availability (wetness) for the underage and legal age groups. The model evaluates the likelihood that underage students will incorrectly perceive normative drinking levels to be higher than they actually are (i.e., misperception) and adjust their drinking accordingly by varying the interaction between underage students in …

Finitely 1-Convex F-Rings, Suzanne Larson Jan 2011

Finitely 1-Convex F-Rings, Suzanne Larson

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

This paper investigates f-rings that can be constructed in a finite number of steps where every step consists of taking the fibre product of two f-rings, both being either a 1-convex f-ring or a fibre product obtained in an earlier step of the construction. These are the f-rings that satisfy the algebraic property that rings of continuous functions possess when the underlying topological space is finitely an F-space (i.e. has a Stone-čech compactification that is a finite union of compact F-spaces). These f-rings are shown to be SV f-rings with bounded inversion and finite rank and, when constructed from semisimple …

The Chemistry Of Atmosphere-Forest Exchange (Cafe) Model-Part 2: Application To Bearpex-2007 Observations, Nicole C. Bouvier-Brown Jan 2011

The Chemistry Of Atmosphere-Forest Exchange (Cafe) Model-Part 2: Application To Bearpex-2007 Observations, Nicole C. Bouvier-Brown

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

In a companion paper, we introduced the Chemistry of Atmosphere-Forest Exchange (CAFE) model, a vertically-resolved 1-D chemical transport model designed to probe the details of near-surface reactive gas exchange. Here, we apply CAFE to noontime observations from the 2007 Biosphere Effects on Aerosols and Photochemistry Experiment (BEARPEX-2007). In this work we evaluate the CAFE modeling approach, demonstrate the significance of in-canopy chemistry for forest-atmosphere exchange and identify key shortcomings in the current understanding of intra-canopy processes.

CAFE generally reproduces BEARPEX-2007 observations but requires an enhanced radical recycling mechanism to overcome a factor of 6 underestimate of hydroxyl (OH) concentrations observed …

On The Electronic And Geometric Structure Properties Of Silicon-Germanium Nanoclusters: A Hybrid Density Functional Theoretic Study, Sarah Elizabeth Duesman

Physics Theses - Archive

Hybrid density functional theory has been used to study the electronic and geometric structure properties of silicon-germanium nanoclusters containing up to eight atoms. The hybrid functional used is Becke's three-parameter exchange functional with the exchange-correlation functional of Lee, Yang, and Parr (B3LYP). A large 6-311G(3df,3pd) basis set as implemented in the suite of software Gaussian 03/09 has been used for accurate determinations of all properties of the SimGen (m + n [lesser or equal to] 8) nanoclusters. For each cluster, various different isomers have been studied to arrive at a global minimum energy structure, and for each of these isomers …

Measurement Of Single Diffractive Differential Cross Section (Dσ/(D|T|)) At √(S ) = 1.96 Tev Using The D0 Forward Proton Detectors, Arnab Kumar Pal Jan 2011

Measurement Of Single Diffractive Differential Cross Section (Dσ/(D|T|)) At √(S ) = 1.96 Tev Using The D0 Forward Proton Detectors, Arnab Kumar Pal

Physics Dissertations - Archive

The analysis described in this dissertation uses the Forward Proton Detectors (FPD) installed at the D0 detector in the Tevatron collider at Fermilab to measure the single diffractive differential cross section (d&sigma/(d|t|)) at sqrt(s ) = 1.96 TeV center of mass energy. The single diffractive events are selected using the D0 central detector and the FPD system and |t| of the forward proton are measured using the FPD system. The analysis presents the measurement of the differential cross section of the single diffractive events as a function of |t| in the range 0.2 < |t| < 1.3 GeV2. The differential cross section measurement is within the theoretical and experimental expectations. The total single diffractive cross section (&sigma_sd ) in the region 0.0 < |t| < 1.3 GeV2 is found to be 9.682 ± 0.048(stat.) ± 1.219(syst.) mb.

Relaxations Of L(1, 1)-Labeling For The Broadcast Scheduling Problem, Shaun N. Joseph Jan 2011

Relaxations Of L(1, 1)-Labeling For The Broadcast Scheduling Problem, Shaun N. Joseph

Open Access Dissertations

The broadcast scheduling problem asks how an arbitrary network of broadcast transceivers operating on a shared medium may share the medium in such a way that communication over the entire network is possible. In the case where transmissions are explicitly scheduled, as opposed to be determined by contention, the problem is naturally modeled as a graph coloring problem. The canonical model is the L(1, 1)-labeling, also known as the distance-2 coloring, coloring of the graph square, or strict schedule. This coloring is, however, difficult to obtain even sub-optimally and typically uses many colors, which corresponds to an undesirable over-division …

Global Change Reactive Background Subtraction, Edwin Premkumar Sathiyamoorthy Jan 2011

Global Change Reactive Background Subtraction, Edwin Premkumar Sathiyamoorthy

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Background subtraction is the technique of segmenting moving foreground objects from stationary or dynamic background scenes. Background subtraction is a critical step in many computer vision applications including video surveillance, tracking, gesture recognition etc. This thesis addresses the challenges associated with the background subtraction systems due to the sudden illumination changes happening in an indoor environment. Most of the existing techniques adapt to gradual illumination changes, but fail to cope with the sudden illumination changes. Here, we introduce a Global change reactive background subtraction to model these changes as a regression function of spatial image coordinates. The regression model is …
