Partitioning Of Anthropogenic Watering Sites By Desert Carnivores., Todd C. Atwood, Tricia L. Fry, Bruce Leland Jan 2011

Partitioning Of Anthropogenic Watering Sites By Desert Carnivores., Todd C. Atwood, Tricia L. Fry, Bruce Leland

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We investigated the role of water features as focal attractors for gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), coyotes (Canis latrans), and bobcats (Felis rufus) in west Texas to determine if they were foci for interspecific interaction. Mixed effects models indicated that species partitioned use of water features spatially and temporally. Linear models indicated factors influencing relative activity at water features varied by species. For coyotes and bobcats, the water availability model, containing days since last rainfall and nearest-neighbor distance to water was best supported by the data, with relative activity increasing with time between rainfall and distance between waters. For gray foxes, …

Natal Colony Site Fidelity Of Herring Gulls At Sandusky Bay, Ohio., Bruce N. Buckingham, Benjamin Bacak

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We studied three Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) colonies in the Sandusky Bay area, Sandusky, OH, between 1981 and 2006. During this period, we banded 24,000 nestlings and received reports of 347 recovered bands. Forty-nine of these band recoveries were as adults recovered during the nesting season as far as 890 km from their natal colony. Gulls were also captured at five other colonies located in the Great Lakes. Gulls recovered outside the original 10-min block of banding accounted for 47 percent of the returns. We hypothesize that half of the recoveries of adult Herring Gulls during the nesting season occurred …

Domestic Calf Mortality And Producer Detection Rates In The Mexican Wolf Recovery Area: Implications For Livestock Management And Carnivore Compensation Schemes., Stewart W. Breck, Bryan M. Domestic Calf Mortality And Producer Detection Rates In The Mexican Wolf Recovery Area: Implications For Livestock Management And Carnivore Compensation Schemes., Stewart W. Breck, Bryan M. Kluever, Michael Panasci, John Oakleaf, Terry Johnson, Warren B. Ballard, Larry Howery, David L. Bergman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Conserving large carnivores throughout the world will often require that they share the landscape with livestock. Minimizing depredations and increasing tolerance by livestock producers will be critical for conservation efforts. To investigate factors influencing calf mortality and producer detection rates (i.e., number of livestock killed by predators, found by producers, and correctly classified as to cause of death), we monitored radio-tagged domestic calves at two sites in the Mexican wolf recovery area (East Eagle [EE] and Adobe Ranch [AR]). Study areas differed in grazing practices, density of predators (mountain lions, black bears, coyotes, and Mexican wolves), and amount of effort …

Determinants Of Local And Migratory Movements Of Great Lakes Double-Crested Cormorants, Alban Guillaumet, Brian S, Dorr, Guiming Wang, Jimmy D. Taylor Ii, Richard B. Chipman, Heidi Scherr, Jeff Bowman, Kenneth F. Abraham, Terry J. Doyle, Elizabeth Cranker

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We investigated how individual strategies combine with demographic and ecological factors to determine local and migratory movements in the double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus). One hundred and forty-five cormorants were captured from 14 nesting colonies across the Great Lakes area and fitted with satellite transmitters. We first tested the hypotheses that sexual segregation, density-dependent effects, and the intensity of management operations influenced home range size during the breeding season. The influence of these factors appeared to be limited in part due to random variability in foraging and dispersal decisions at individual and colony levels. We also designed a statistical …

West Nile virus (WNV)-associated disease has a range of clinical manifestations among avian taxa, the reasons for which are not known. Species susceptibility varies within the avian family Corvidae, with estimated mortality rates ranging from 50 to 100%. We examined and compared virologic, immunologic, pathologic, and clinical responses in 2 corvid species, the American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) and the fish crow (C ossifragus), following experimental WNV inoculation. Unlike fish crows, which remained clinically normal throughout the study, American crows succumbed to WNV infection subsequent to dehydration, electrolyte and pH imbalances, and delayed or depressed humoral immune …

Characterization Of Intermolecular Pi-Type Interactions Using Sophisticated Quantum Mechanical, Electronic Structure Computations, Emily Joy Carrell Jan 2011

Characterization Of Intermolecular Pi-Type Interactions Using Sophisticated Quantum Mechanical, Electronic Structure Computations, Emily Joy Carrell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much like the instrumentation in an experimental lab, computational chemists use computers to solve the mathematical equations that describe the physics of electrons to understand the chemistry involved. The combination of the two main components of computational chemistry, the basis set and method, determines the ``cost'' (disk, memory, and CPU time) of a computation. A variety of basis sets and methods have been developed in the past century. The focus of this report is to accurately describe non-covalent interactions with the use of various quantum computational techniques. In Chapter 1 a brief discussion on the theory behind computational chemistry is …

Analysis Of Two Urban Middle Schools: Factors Affecting Student Achievement, V. Douglas Neufeld Jan 2011

Analysis Of Two Urban Middle Schools: Factors Affecting Student Achievement, V. Douglas Neufeld

Theses and Dissertations

Because of increasing student enrollment, a new school was formed in a small low-income Southern California school district. Teachers could choose to transfer to the new school or remain at the existing school. Over five years, quantitative analyses of demographic data showed little differences between the two schools across the years except for a difference in student academic achievement. This mixed-method study examined the demographics and perceptions of academic life at these two middle schools to ascertain an explanation for differences in academic achievement as measured by the same standardized test. Team interviews combined the focus group approach within teams, …

Climatic Resources, Jerry L. Hatfield, John H. Prueger Jan 2011

Climatic Resources, Jerry L. Hatfield, John H. Prueger

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Soil water and soil temperature patterns in the soil profile determine the overall biological response of plants, microbes, and other soil fauna. The impact of soil management practices on the soil microclimate depends primarily on how management practices affect the soil water and soil temperature patterns at the soil surface and within the soil profile throughout the day and across the year. As we begin to understand these interactions, the more opportunities we have to develop soil management practices that will have a positive impact on the soil. These impacts will improve plant production efficiency, decrease pressures from pests, and …

Asymptotics Of Carleman Polynomials For Level Curves Of The Inverse Of A Shifted Joukowsky Transformation, Michael Carr Northington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Let L be a level curve of the inverse of the shifted Joukowsky transformation w [special characters omitted] w − 1 + (w − 1) –1, that is, [special characters omitted]In this thesis we investigate the asymptotic properties of the sequence of polynomials that are orthonormal over the interior domain of L with respect to the area measure. We establish strong asymptotic formulas describing the behavior of these polynomials (as their degree increases) at every point of the complex plane.

Past And Projected Future Changes In Snowpack And Soil Frost At The Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, Usa, John L. Campbell, Scott V. Ollinger, Gerald N. Flerchinger, Haley Wicklein, Katharine Hayhoe, Amey S. Bailey Jan 2011

Past And Projected Future Changes In Snowpack And Soil Frost At The Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, Usa, John L. Campbell, Scott V. Ollinger, Gerald N. Flerchinger, Haley Wicklein, Katharine Hayhoe, Amey S. Bailey

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Long-term data from the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire show that air temperature has increased by about 1°C over the last half century. The warmer climate has caused significant declines in snow depth, snow water equivalent and snow cover duration. Paradoxically, it has been suggested that warmer air temperatures may result in colder soils and more soil frost, as warming leads to a reduction in snow cover insulating soils during winter. Hubbard Brook has one of the longest records of direct field measurements of soil frost in the United States. Historical records show no long-term trends in maximum …

In this work we present some analytic and semi-analytic traveling wave solutions of a generalized Burgers' equation for unidirectional flow of power-law non-Newtonian fluids. The solutions include the corresponding well-known traveling wave solution of the Burgers' equation for Newtonian flows. We also derive estimates of shock thickness for the power-law flows.

Iteratively Reweighted Least Squares Minimization With Prior Information A New Approach, Dmitriy Popov Jan 2011

Iteratively Reweighted Least Squares Minimization With Prior Information A New Approach, Dmitriy Popov

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) algorithms provide an alternative to the more standard 1 l -minimization approach in compressive sensing. Daubechies et al. introduced a particularly stable version of an IRLS algorithm and rigorously proved its convergence in 2010. They did not, however, consider the case in which prior information on the support of the sparse domain of the solution is available. In 2009, Miosso et al. proposed an IRLS algorithm that makes use of this information to further reduce the number of measurements required to recover the solution with specified accuracy. Although Miosso et al. obtained a number of …

An Investigation Of The Representation Of Middle School English Language Learners (Ells) In Special Education Programs In A Large Urban School District, Leah J. Lerma Jan 2011

An Investigation Of The Representation Of Middle School English Language Learners (Ells) In Special Education Programs In A Large Urban School District, Leah J. Lerma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The disproportionate representation of ethnically and racially diverse students in special education has been an enduring problem in education for the past four decades. However, most of the research on disproportionality has focused on the ethnic/racial variable; the body of research focusing on the linguistic variable is still slim in comparison. As linguistic diversity in the United States continues to rise, teachers will continue to be challenged to meet the needs of the English Language Learners in their classrooms. However, many teachers feel unprepared to deal with this diversity and have difficulty discriminating whether a student’s poor performance is due …

Prediction Of Survival Of Early Stages Lung Cancer Patients Based On Er Beta Cellular Expressions And Epidemiological Data, Evgeny Martinenko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We attempted a mathematical model for expected prognosis of lung cancer patients based on a multivariate analysis of the values of ER-interacting proteins (ERbeta) and a membrane bound, glycosylated phosphoprotein MUC1), and patients clinical data recorded at the time of initial surgery. We demonstrate that, even with the limited sample size available to use, combination of clinical and biochemical data (in particular, associated with ERbeta and MUC1) allows to predict survival of lung cancer patients with about 80% accuracy while prediction on the basis of clinical data only gives about 70% accuracy. The present work can be viewed as a …

Direct, Hands-On Or Inquiry Instruction A Study Of Instructional Sequencing And Motivation In The Science Classroom, Jamie Vander Wiede

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Currently, a debate exists between the strengths and weaknesses of direct and inquiry instruction. Inquiry instruction is related to positive effect on learner motivation whereas supporters of direct instruction point to its ability to adequately support learners’ working memories (Hmelo-Silver, Duncan, & Chinn, 2007; Kirschner, Sweller, & Clark, 2006; Kuhn, 2007; Sweller, 1988). This study examined the possibility of combining the best features of both inquiry and direct instruction by sequencing them together. A two-part lesson on electrical circuits was presented in three separate sequences of instruction to middle school students to determine if differences in student motivation and academic …

The Effects Of Presentation Mode And Pace On Learning Immunology With Computer Simulation A Cognitive Evaluation Of A Multimedia Learning Resource, Radakovich Kristy Bradley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Multimedia learning tools have the potential to benefit instructors and learners as supplemental learning materials. However, when such tools are designed inappropriately, this can increase cognitive taxation and impede learning, rendering the tools ineffective. Guided by the theoretical underpinnings provided by cognitive load theory and the cognitive theory of multimedia learning, this study sought to empirically evaluate the effectiveness of a multimedia simulation tool aimed at teaching immunology to novices in an instructional setting. The instructional mode and pace of the tool were manipulated, the three levels of each variable yielding nine experimental groups. The effects of mode and pace …

Modeling Transport And Protein Adsorption In Microfluidic Systems, Craig Finch Jan 2011

Modeling Transport And Protein Adsorption In Microfluidic Systems, Craig Finch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mass transport limitations and surface interactions are important phenomena in microfluidic devices. The flow of water is laminar at small scales and the absence of turbulent mixing can lead to transport limitations, especially for reactions that take place at surfaces. Microscale devices have a high ratio of surface area to volume, and proteins are known to adsorb preferentially at interfaces. Protein adsorption plays a significant role in biology by mediating critical processes such as the attachment of cells to surfaces, the immune response and the coagulation of blood. Simulation tools that can quantitatively predict transport and protein adsorption will enable …
