A Unified Model-Based Fault Diagnosis Scheme For Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems With Additive And Multiplicative Faults, Hasan Ferdowsi, Sarangapani Jagannathan Jan 2011

A Unified Model-Based Fault Diagnosis Scheme For Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems With Additive And Multiplicative Faults, Hasan Ferdowsi, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a novel model-Based fault diagnosis scheme is proposed for a class of uncertain nonlinear discrete-time systems which can be subjected to both additive and multiplicative faults. Faults are detected by using a novel (FD) observer consisting of two online approximators in discrete-time (OLAD) and a robust adaptive term. Upon detection, a fault diagnosis scheme is introduced to determine the fault type by monitoring the input residual generated via the first OLAD output. Then the appropriate OLAD is included in the observer while the other OLAD is switched off. Next, by using both the parameter update law of …

Neural Network-Based Optimal Control For Trajectory Tracking Of A Helicopter Uav, David Nodland, H. Zargarzadeh, S. Jagannathan Jan 2011

Neural Network-Based Optimal Control For Trajectory Tracking Of A Helicopter Uav, David Nodland, H. Zargarzadeh, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Helicopter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) may be widely used for both military and civilian operations. Because these helicopters are underactuated nonlinear mechanical systems, high-performance controller design for them presents a challenge. This paper presents an optimal controller design for trajectory tracking of a helicopter UAV using a neural network (NN). the state-feedback control system utilizes the backstepping methodology, employing kinematic and dynamic controllers. the online approximator-Based dynamic controller learns the infinite-horizon Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation in continuous time and calculates the corresponding optimal control input to minimize the HJB equation forward-in-time. Optimal tracking is accomplished with a single NN utilized for …

Thermal-Aware Cell And Through-Silicon-Via Co-Placement For 3d Ics, Jason Cong, Guojie Luo, Yiyu Shi Jan 2011

Thermal-Aware Cell And Through-Silicon-Via Co-Placement For 3d Ics, Jason Cong, Guojie Luo, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Existing thermal-aware 3D placement methods assume that the temperature of 3D ICs can be optimized by properly distributing the power dissipations and ignoring the heat conductivity of though-silicon-vias (TSVs). However, our study indicates that this is not exactly correct. While considering the thermal effect of TSVs during placement appears to be quite complicated, we are able to prove that when the TSV area in each bin is proportional to the lumped power consumption in that bin, together with the bins in all the tiers directly above it, the peak temperature is minimized. based on this criterion, we implement a thermal-aware …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial genome sequence analysis is critical to the diagnostic evaluation of mitochondrial disease. Existing methodologies differ widely in throughput, complexity, cost efficiency, and sensitivity of heteroplasmy detection. Affymetrix MitoChip v2.0, which uses a sequencing-by-genotyping technology, allows potentially accurate and high-throughput sequencing of the entire human mitochondrial genome to be completed in a cost-effective fashion. However, the relatively low call rate achieved using existing software tools has limited the wide adoption of this platform for either clinical or research applications. Here, we report the design and development of a custom bioinformatics software pipeline that achieves a much improved call rate …

A Regional-Scale Climate Reconstruction Of The Last 4000 Years From Lakes In The Nebraska Sand Hills, Usa, Jens Schmieder, Sherilyn C. Fritz, James B. Swinehart, Avery L. C. Shinneman, Alexander P. Wolfe, Gifford Miller, N. Daniels, K. C. Jacobs, Eric C. Grimm

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

High-resolution paleohydrological reconstructions were carried out in five shallow lakes in the Nebraska Sand Hills across an east–west transect in order to 1) determine whether long-term droughts of the past 4000 years were spatially and temporally coherent across the region, 2) distinguish local variation in climate or hydrology from regional patterns of change, and 3) compare the paleolimnological results with the existing dune-inferred drought records. Diatom- inferred lake-level was reconstructed for all sites and compared with other regional records. Alterations between high and low lake-levels were frequent during the past 4000 years, which suggests that shifts between dry and wet …

Determining A Patient Recovery From A Total Knee Replacement Using Fuzzy Logic And Active Databases, Robert Azarbod Jan 2011

Determining A Patient Recovery From A Total Knee Replacement Using Fuzzy Logic And Active Databases, Robert Azarbod

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The purpose of the knowledge-based system is to predict the rehabilitation timeline of a patient in physical therapy for a total knee replacement. All patients have various attributes that contribute to their rehabilitation rate such as: weight, gender, smoking habit, medications, physical ability, or other medical problems. A combination of any one or several of these attributes will affect the recovery process. The proposed FRTP (Fuzzy Rehabilitation Timeline Predictor) is a fuzzy data mining model that can predict the recovery length of a patient in physical therapy for a total knee replacement and provide feedback to experts for revision of …

A Web Based Fuzzy Data Mining Using Combs Inference Method And Decision Predictor, Shajia Akhter Sharmin Jan 2011

A Web Based Fuzzy Data Mining Using Combs Inference Method And Decision Predictor, Shajia Akhter Sharmin

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Fuzzy logic has become a very popular method of reasoning a system with approximate input system instead of a precise one. When qualitative variables are used to determine the decisions then we have to create some specific functions where the membership values of the input can be any number between 0 to 1 instead of 1 or 0 which is used in binary logic. When number of input attribute increases it the combinatorial rules increases exponentially, and diminishes performance of the system. The problem is generally known as “combinatorial rule explosion”. The Information Technology Department of Minnesota State University, Mankato …

Design And Development Of A Debris Flow Tracking "Smart Rock", Matthew J. Harding

Master's Theses and Capstones

This thesis covers the design and development of a Smart Rock sensor package to be used in U.S. Geological Survey research of debris flow phenomena. This instrumented Rock, containing inertial sensors and pressure sensors, provides information about the movement of the flow as well as the pressures seen within the flow. The goal of the sensor package is to use this information to track the position of a particle in the flow with an accuracy of 1 m over the course of 10 s..

It is found that using an ad hoc filtering method provides the required level of accuracy. …

Accelerometer Calibration For Nasa's Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission Spacecraft, Benjamin M. Jenkins Jan 2011

Accelerometer Calibration For Nasa's Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission Spacecraft, Benjamin M. Jenkins

Master's Theses and Capstones

This thesis presents several methods for the on-board and/or ground-based calibration of accelerometers for the spacecraft (s/c) of the NASA Magnetospheric Multi-Scale (MMS) Mission during mission operation. A lumped bias is estimated to correct for the total effect of the MMS accelerometer sensor bias, orthogonal misalignment and the shift in the s/c's center of mass.

Various estimation techniques are evaluated and compared, including both dynamically driven real-time filters/observers and post processing batch algorithms. Both methods are shown to accurately determine lumped bias, so long as the s/c inertia tensor is well known. If, however, there is any uncertainty in the …

On The Ability Of Indentation To Capture The Anisotropic Elastic Properties Of The Pyrolytic Carbon, Nikolay Timoshchuk Jan 2011

On The Ability Of Indentation To Capture The Anisotropic Elastic Properties Of The Pyrolytic Carbon, Nikolay Timoshchuk

Master's Theses and Capstones

We used micro- and nanoindentation, macroscopic strain gage methods and FE studies to correlate the indentation modulus and the macroscopic in- and out-of-plane Young's moduli of transversely isotropic pyrolytic carbon. The out-of-plane indentation modulus of bulk PyroC was comparable with predicted values and more than a factor of two higher than the out-of-plane Young's modulus. The in-plane indentation modulus was significantly lower than predicted values which we attribute to nanobuckling of graphite-like planes. Polarized light microscopy studies on carbon-carbon composite samples infiltrated at 10, 20, 30 kPa demonstrated that the increase in pressure leads to lower texture of the PyroC …

Climate Change Impact Reliability Of Large Electric Power Transformers In The Northeast United States, Krithikha Chinnaswamy Jan 2011

Climate Change Impact Reliability Of Large Electric Power Transformers In The Northeast United States, Krithikha Chinnaswamy

Master's Theses and Capstones

Global climate model simulations, when scaled to the Northeast U.S. region, indicate that New England will by 2100 experience many more days each summer of daily maximum temperatures in excess of 90°F. Given the strong correlation between summer heat waves and electric power demand, the stresses placed on the components of the electric grid by prolonged, elevated power demand is of obvious concern.

In this thesis a standard thermal model for large transformers is coupled with a temperature-dependent electric power demand model to predict the frequency of transformer thermal overload events during the months of June, July, and August through …

Real-Time Sampling-Based Motion Planning With Dynamic Obstacles, Kevin Rose Jan 2011

Real-Time Sampling-Based Motion Planning With Dynamic Obstacles, Kevin Rose

Master's Theses and Capstones

Autonomous robots are increasingly becoming incorporated in everyday human activities, and this trend does not show any signs of slowing down. One task that autonomous robots will need to reliably perform among humans and other dynamic objects is motion planning. That is, to reliably navigate a robot to a desired pose as quickly as possible while minimizing the probability of colliding with other objects. This involves not only planning around the predicted future trajectories of dynamic obstacles, but doing so in a real-time manner so that the robot can remain reactive to its surroundings. Current methods do not directly address …

Unconstrained Noninvasive Vital Signs Monitoring For Detection Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea With Automated Prevention, Jonathan Waters Jan 2011

Unconstrained Noninvasive Vital Signs Monitoring For Detection Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea With Automated Prevention, Jonathan Waters

Master's Theses and Capstones

The Bioengineering Laboratory at UNH has demonstrated the usefulness of medical device interoperability through previous work that involved connecting an advanced hospital bed with blood pressure monitors over an electrical communication bus known as Controller Area Network (CAN). The medical devices utilize the software communication protocol known as CANopen for communicating relevant patient data to one another. This thesis explores the opportunity to detect a person's heartbeat and respiration while lying in a hospital bed noninvasively and unconstrained for accurately identifying an episode of obstructive sleep apnea. The design and development of this device is a CANopen compatible therapeutic automatic …

Variation In The Dynamic Response Of Housing Markets, Andrew Pate Hill Jan 2011

Variation In The Dynamic Response Of Housing Markets, Andrew Pate Hill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluates the existence of asset bubbles in Florida metropolitan statistical areas during 2000–2010. Estimation occurs in two stages with the first being the estimated fundamental price of housing using a fixed effects estimator. Once the fundamental price of housing is determined an error correction model of housing prices is estimated to evaluate the degrees of serial correlation and mean reversion existing in the sampled geographic areas. Serial correlation and mean reversion are then interacted with the hypothesized effects of information costs, supply costs, and expectations of future price behavior to uncover variation in the dynamic response of housing. …

An Examination Of Mathematical Knowledge For Teaching In Professional Development Settings, Shannon Harmon Jan 2011

An Examination Of Mathematical Knowledge For Teaching In Professional Development Settings, Shannon Harmon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have laid the foundation for what mathematics teachers need to know, a construct referred to as Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (Ball, Thames, & Phelps, 2008). There is, however, a lack of robust research regarding how Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKT) is developed within professional development settings. The purpose of this qualitative research study, therefore, was to examine how different foci of professional development revealed different domains of MKT. In the immersion setting, the professional development focused on engaging teachers in discourse surrounding teachers' completion of mathematical tasks. In the practice-based setting, the professional development focused on engaging teachers in …

Tuning The Thermal Relaxation Of Transition-Metal Ferrite Nanoparticles Through Their Intrinsic Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy, Jose M. Vargas, Abhishek Srivastava, Amin Yourdkhani, Luis Zaldivar, Gabriel Caruntu, Leonard Spinu Jan 2011

Tuning The Thermal Relaxation Of Transition-Metal Ferrite Nanoparticles Through Their Intrinsic Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy, Jose M. Vargas, Abhishek Srivastava, Amin Yourdkhani, Luis Zaldivar, Gabriel Caruntu, Leonard Spinu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Monodispersed ferrite nanoparticles of Fe3O4, MnFe2O4, and CoFe2O4 (near to 10 nm), were synthesized by organometallic synthesis, showing the same homogeneous chemical, morphological, and crystalline characteristics. The study and correlation of the thermal relaxation processes were analyzed through static and dynamic measurements. Due to the intrinsic chemical characteristics and magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the ferrite nanoparticles, the energy barrier can be tuned to a range between 1100 K EB 7300 K, showing an alternative approach for tuning the magnetic dynamic properties, in contrast to the well-known mechanism through particle-size-effects. Specific loss power efficiencies were evaluated for the three ferrite samples. Comparing …

Highly Ordered Transition Metal Ferrite Nanotube Arrays Synthesized By Template-Assisted Liquid Phase Deposition, Amin Yourdkhani, Gabriel Caruntu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Highly ordered spinel ferriteMxFe3_xO4 (M ¼ Ni, Co, Zn) nanotube arrays were synthesized in anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) templates with a pore size of 200 nm by combining a liquid phase deposition (LPD) method with a template-assisted route. The morphology of the transition metal ferrite nanotubes was characterized by electron microscopy (FE-SEM; TEM, SAED and HRTEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), whereas their chemical composition was determined by inductive coupling plasma (ICP). The phase purity was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the magnetic properties of the nanotubes were measured by SQUID measurements. Unlike the deposition of thin film structures, …

Effects Of Surface Quasi-Geostrophic Turbulence On Phytoplankton Competition And Coexistence, Coralie Perruche, Pascal Rivière, Guillaume Lapeyre, Xavier Carton, Philippe Pondaven Jan 2011

Effects Of Surface Quasi-Geostrophic Turbulence On Phytoplankton Competition And Coexistence, Coralie Perruche, Pascal Rivière, Guillaume Lapeyre, Xavier Carton, Philippe Pondaven

Journal of Marine Research

This paper aims at studying numerically the competition between two mutually exclusive phytoplankton species in a fully-turbulent field consisting of interacting mesoscale and submesoscale structures. A simple NPPZD ecosystem model is embedded in a Surface Quasi-Geostrophic model which is able to reproduce frontogenesis and the associated nutrient vertical pump. The two simulated phytoplankton species differ by their size and their affinity for nutrients. In this study, we rationalize the role played by eddies and filaments in the distribution of the two phytoplankton species. We show that the SQG dynamics are responsible for the coexistence of the two phytoplankton species on …

On Trend Analysis In Climatic Time Series, With Application To Surface Temperature, Victor Privalsky, Marina Fortus, Vladimir Komchatov, Eugene Borisov

Journal of Marine Research

The deletion of a trend as an initial step in the analysis of climatic time series may result in the elimination of low-frequency components which constitute an integral part of climatic variability. An example is given here showing that linear trend deletion from the time series of the World Ocean annual sea-surface temperature (1850–2009) reduces the low-frequency (from 0.02 year–1 to 0.001 year–1) part of the time series spectrum by ∼40% to 80% thus severely distorting the spectrum of climate. As an additional result, it is shown that the current warming can be explained in full within …

The Arrested Agulhas Retroflection, Doron Nof, Volodymyr Zharkov, Joseph Ortiz, Nathan Paldor, Wilton Arruda, Eric Chassignet

Journal of Marine Research

Paleoceanographic proxy data indicate that the Agulhas leakage into the South Atlantic was dramatically reduced during glacial times. In our former papers, we suggested that this was due to a northward shift of the zero wind stress curl that, in turn, forced the retroflection to occur farther north, where the slant of the coastline relative to the north is steep. In the present paper, we propose that strong westerlies (0.4 Pa, implying a wind speed of ∼12 m s–1 at zero degrees centigrade), which were supposedly common during glaciations, can also arrest the leakage. This arrest occurred because the …
