Adaptive Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy Planning Optimization With Changing Tumor Geometry And Biology Enforcing Both Cumulative And Fraction Size Dose Constraints, Behlul Saka Dec 2011

Adaptive Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy Planning Optimization With Changing Tumor Geometry And Biology Enforcing Both Cumulative And Fraction Size Dose Constraints, Behlul Saka

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is a modern technique of delivering radiation treatments to cancer patients. In IMRT technology, intensities must be chosen for the many small unit grids into which the beams are divided to produce a desired distribution of dose at points throughout the body with the goal of maximizing dose delivered to the tumor while sparing healthy tissues from excessive radiation and keeping dose homogeneous across the tumor. Although IMRT plans are optimized as a single overall treatment plan, they are delivered over 30-50 treatment sessions (fractions) and both cumulative and per-fraction dose constraints apply. The extended …

Integrated Planning For Rural Rail Transportation, Jeffrey Cohan Gwaltney Dec 2011

Integrated Planning For Rural Rail Transportation, Jeffrey Cohan Gwaltney

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Population growth in rural areas has led to new interest in rail transportation. Planning a passenger rail system involves numerous difficult decisions, most representing a trade-off between customer service and cost. In this work, we attempt to integrate many of these planning decisions. We consider strategic decisions such as station location and vehicle procurement, as well as tactical issues that include vehicle scheduling. Our integrated model exploits the linear network structure that best suits many rural American communities, including Northwest Arkansas. Due to the intractability of the integrated rail planning problem, we have developed a customized heuristic approach to solve …

Business Intelligence Tools In A Developmental Environment: An Academic Module, Landon M. Hemsley Dec 2011

Business Intelligence Tools In A Developmental Environment: An Academic Module, Landon M. Hemsley

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Business Intelligence (BI), defined here as the creation and use of meaningful business information for management, has over the last 20 years shown over and over again its value to professional industry. The prevalence of BI has also demonstrated that a new brand of worker is needed to take advantage of the sophisticated tools available to modern industry. Evidence suggests modern universities have struggled to educate professionals on the tremendous impact BI can have on an organization if used properly. This work is a step in an endeavor to bridge that educational gap and generate an educational strategic advantage by …

An Investigation Of The Application Of Phase Change Materials In Practical Thermal Management Systems, David Ewing Dec 2011

An Investigation Of The Application Of Phase Change Materials In Practical Thermal Management Systems, David Ewing

All Dissertations

This work investigates the application of alternative cooling techniques to thermal management. In the first section, this work presents models and extensive simulation studies on an alternative cooling strategy based upon phase change materials (PCMs) for the thermal management system of a LED headlight assembly. These studies have shown that properly chosen PCMs, when suspended in metal foam matrices, increased the thermal conductivity of the PCM. The increased thermal conductivity can enhance the cooling characteristics of a practical thermal management system for a LED headlight system. To further enhance the advantages of using PCMs, nanoparticle enhanced fluids (nanofluids) are desirable …

A Formal Representation Of Mechanical Functions To Support Physics-Based Computational Reasoning In Early Mechanical Design, Chiradeep Sen Dec 2011

A Formal Representation Of Mechanical Functions To Support Physics-Based Computational Reasoning In Early Mechanical Design, Chiradeep Sen

All Dissertations

The lack of computational support to the conceptual phase of mechanical engineering design is well recognized. Function-based modeling and thinking is widely recommended in design texts as useful means for describing design concepts and using them in tasks such as solution search, problem decomposition, and design archival. Graph-based function structure models that describe a product as a network of transformative actions of material, energy, and information, are discussed as a potential tool for this purpose, but in the current state of the art, function structures are not formalized as a computational representation. Consequently, no computer tool exists with which a …

Computational Approaches To Understand Phenotypic Structure And Constitutive Mechanics Relationships Of Single Cells, Scott Wood Dec 2011

Computational Approaches To Understand Phenotypic Structure And Constitutive Mechanics Relationships Of Single Cells, Scott Wood

All Dissertations

The goal of this work is to better understand the relationship between the structure and function of biological cells by simulating their nonlinear mechanical behavior under static and dynamic loading using image structure-based finite element modeling (FEM). Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are chosen for this study due to the strong correlation of the geometric arrangement of their structural components on their mechanical behavior and the implications of that behavior on diseases such as atherosclerosis.
VSMCs are modeled here using a linear elastic material model together with truss elements, which simulate the cytoskeletal fiber network that provides the cells with …

Fluid Mud Underflows In Coastal Dredge Disposal, Mijanur Chowdhury

All Dissertations

This manuscript presents the results of a thorough theoretical and experimental investigation on fluid mud underflows generated in a typical coastal dredge disposal operation. The main goal of this investigation is to understand the propagation dynamics of fluid mud underflows that depends upon a number of factors, including: concentrations, rheological properties and released configurations of fluid mud. Laboratory experiments were conducted with different initial fluid mud concentrations in three different experimental set-ups: rectangular flume for constant volume release, rectangular flume for constant flux release, and a square pool for radial constant flux release of fluid mud. The experiments in the …

Bases And Applications Of Riemann-Roch Spaces Of Function Fields With Many Rational Places, Justin Peachey Dec 2011

Bases And Applications Of Riemann-Roch Spaces Of Function Fields With Many Rational Places, Justin Peachey

All Dissertations

Algebraic geometry codes are generalizations of Reed-Solomon codes, which are implemented in nearly all digital communication devices. In ground-breaking work, Tsfasman, Vladut, and Zink showed the existence of a sequence of algebraic geometry codes that exceed the Gilbert-Varshamov bound, which was previously thought unbeatable. More recently, it has been shown that multipoint algebraic geometry codes can outperform comparable one-point algebraic geometry codes. In both cases, it is desirable that these function fields have many rational places. The prototypical example of such a function field is the Hermitian function field which is maximal. In 2003, Geil produced a new family of …

Mechanical And Modular Verification Condition Generation For Object-Based Software, Heather Harton Dec 2011

Mechanical And Modular Verification Condition Generation For Object-Based Software, Heather Harton

All Dissertations

The foundational goal of this work is the development of mechanizable proof rules and a verification condition generator based on those rules for modern software. The verification system will be modular so that it is possible to verify the implementation of a component relying upon only the specifications of underlying components that are reused. The system must enable full behavioral verification. The proof rules used to generate verification conditions (VCs) of correctness must be amenable to automation. While automation requires software developers to annotate implementations with assertions, it should not require assistance in the proofs. This research has led to …

Modification And Characterization Of Fluorescent Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles For Single Molecule Detection, Yueli Zheng Dec 2011

Modification And Characterization Of Fluorescent Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles For Single Molecule Detection, Yueli Zheng

All Dissertations

Single molecule tracking using fluorescent dye or nanoparticle labels has emerged as a useful technique for probing biomolecular processes. Considerable interest arises in the development of nanoparticle labels with brighter fluorescence in order to improve the spatial and temporal resolution of single molecule detection and to facilitate the application of single molecule detection methods to a wider range of intracellular processes. The McNeill laboratory recently reported that conjugated polymer nanoparticles exhibit fluorescence cross-sections roughly 10-100 times higher than other luminescent nanoparticles of similar size, excellent photostability (2.2×108 photons emitted per nanoparticle prior to photobleaching), and saturated emission rates roughly 100 …

Pitch-Based Activated Carbon Fibers: The Effect Of Precursor Composition On Pore Structure, Halil Tekinalp Dec 2011

Pitch-Based Activated Carbon Fibers: The Effect Of Precursor Composition On Pore Structure, Halil Tekinalp

All Dissertations

Although researchers have previously investigated the effect of precursor differences on the final properties of activated carbon fibers (ACFs), those precursors were not well-characterized. In particular, detailed information about their molecular composition and anisotropy was not available.
In this study, seven oligomeric fractions, each of well-defined composition and molecular weight (mol wt) distribution, were isolated from a commercially produced isotropic petroleum pitch (i.e., Marathon M–50) and used for the production of ACFs. Four of these precursors of varying oligomeric composition were fully isotropic and three contained different levels of mesophase, so that the effects of molecular composition and molecular order …

Detection-Assisted Object Tracking By Mobile Cameras, Li He Dec 2011

Detection-Assisted Object Tracking By Mobile Cameras, Li He

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Tracking-by-detection is a class of new tracking approaches that utilizes recent development of object detection algorithms. This type of approach performs object detection for each frame and uses data association algorithms to associate new observations to existing targets. Inspired by the core idea of the tracking-by-detection framework, we propose a new framework called detection-assisted tracking where object detection algorithm provides help to the tracking algorithm when such help is necessary; thus object detection, a very time consuming task, is performed only when needed. The proposed framework is also able to handle complicated scenarios where cameras are allowed to move, and …

Location Cheating: A Security Challenge To Location-Based Social Network Services, Mai Ren Dec 2011

Location Cheating: A Security Challenge To Location-Based Social Network Services, Mai Ren

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Location-based mobile social network services such as Foursquare and Gowalla have grown exponentially over the past several years. These location-based services utilize the geographical position to enrich user experiences in a variety of contexts, including location-based searching and location-based mobile advertising. To attract more users, the location-based mobile social network services provide real-world rewards to the user, when a user checks in at a certain venue or location. This gives incentives for users to cheat on their locations.

In this thesis, we investigate the threat of location cheating attacks, find the root cause of the vulnerability, and outline the possible …

Distributed Algorithms For Energy Savings In The Core Network, Lin Liu Dec 2011

Distributed Algorithms For Energy Savings In The Core Network, Lin Liu

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Recently, many efforts have been undertaken to reduce the energy consumption of core networks. Bundle link is a commonly deployed technique in core networks to combine several high-speed physical sublinks into a virtual connection to achieve bandwidth upgrade flexibility and network reliability. The traffic passing through a bundle link can be carried fully over the first few sublinks (bin packing) or evenly distributed over all sublinks (load balancing). In the current network when a bundle link is on, all of its sublinks are on, thus, selectively shutting down a few sublinks during periods of low traffic could save a large …

Potential Effects Of Altered Precipitation Regimes On Primary Production In Terrestrial Ecosystems, Joanna S. Hsu Dec 2011

Potential Effects Of Altered Precipitation Regimes On Primary Production In Terrestrial Ecosystems, Joanna S. Hsu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In addition to causing an increase in mean temperatures, climate change is also altering precipitation regimes across the globe. General circulation models project both latitude-dependent changes in precipitation mean and increases in precipitation variability. These changes in water availability will impact terrestrial primary productivity, the fixation of carbon dioxide into organic matter by plants. In my thesis, I addressed the following three questions: 1.) What will be the relative effect of changes in the mean and standard deviation of annual precipitation on mean annual primary production? 2.) Which ecosystems will be the most sensitive to changes in precipitation? 3.) Will …

An Embedded Atom Method Investigation Into The Lattice Dynamics Of Metallic Surfaces, Richard B. Wilson Dec 2011

An Embedded Atom Method Investigation Into The Lattice Dynamics Of Metallic Surfaces, Richard B. Wilson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The explosion in electronic devices over the last half century is a result of the successful development and application of theories that explain the physical properties of solids. For example, the theory of lattice vibrations developed in the first half of the 20th century has had a huge impact on our ability to understand and design devices. The idea that atoms vibrate together in grouped vibrational modes, called phonons, has enabled scientists to quantify the impact that atomic motion has on mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical properties. This has aided the creation of all sorts of useful technology ranging …

Evaluation And Seismically Isolated Substructure Redesign Of A Typical Multi-Span Pre-Stressed Concrete Girder Highway Bridge, Brian D. Richins Dec 2011

Evaluation And Seismically Isolated Substructure Redesign Of A Typical Multi-Span Pre-Stressed Concrete Girder Highway Bridge, Brian D. Richins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Seismic considerations greatly influence the lateral and vertical design of a structure, often necessitating larger elements than would otherwise be required. Seismic isolation greatly reduces the demands on a structure due to earthquake loading, allowing the use of smaller, more efficient members and foundations. This case study illustrates the theory and procedure of evaluating the response of a recently built multi-span highway bridge using the most recent (2009) AASHTO code. Based on this response, an equivalent structure was designed to incorporate a seismic isolation system, and the substructure of the isolated bridge redesigned to meet the reduced demands more economically. …

Asymptotic Multiphysics Modeling Of Composite Beams, Qi Wang Dec 2011

Asymptotic Multiphysics Modeling Of Composite Beams, Qi Wang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A series of composite beam models are constructed for efficient high-fidelity beam analysis based on the variational-asymptotic method (VAM). Without invoking any a priori kinematic assumptions, the original three-dimensional, geometrically nonlinear beam problem is rigorously split into a two-dimensional cross-sectional analysis and a one-dimensional global beam analysis, taking advantage of the geometric small parameter that is an inherent property of the structure.

The thermal problem of composite beams is studied first. According to the quasisteady theory of thermoelasticity, two beam models are proposed: one for heat conduction analysis and the other for thermoelastic analysis. For heat conduction analysis, two different …

Evaluation Of An Incompressible Energy-Vorticity Turbulence Model For Fully Rough Pipe Flow, Doug F. Hunsaker Dec 2011

Evaluation Of An Incompressible Energy-Vorticity Turbulence Model For Fully Rough Pipe Flow, Doug F. Hunsaker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Traditional methods of closing the Boussinesq-based Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are considered, and suggestions for improving two-equation turbulence models are made. The traditional smooth-wall boundary conditions are shown to be incorrect, and the correct boundary conditions are provided along with sample solutions to traditional models. The correct boundary condition at a smooth wall for dissipation-based turbulence models is that which forces both the turbulent kinetic energy and its first derivative to zero. Foundations for an energy-vorticity model suggested by Phillips are presented along with the near-smooth-wall behavior of the model. These results show that at a perfectly smooth wall, the turbulent …

Effect Of Vegetation On The Accumulation And Melting Of Snow At The Tw Daniels Experimental Forest, Vinod Mahat Dec 2011

Effect Of Vegetation On The Accumulation And Melting Of Snow At The Tw Daniels Experimental Forest, Vinod Mahat

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Snow melt is an important component of Western US water resources, accounting for about 50-80% of the annual runoff. Water resources management requires prediction of runoff from snowmelt accounting for the variability of vegetation present in heterogeneous watersheds. This dissertation has examined ways to improve snowmelt modeling capability to better account for vegetation canopy effects on snowmelt and has presented enhancements to an energy balance model that include i) an improved representation of the transmission of radiation through the canopy, ii) an improved representation of the atmospheric transport of heat and water vapor between the snow on the ground, in …

Axisymmetric Finite Element Modeling Of Adhesive Joint Between A Laminated Composite And Metal Cylinder, Casey A. Talbot Dec 2011

Axisymmetric Finite Element Modeling Of Adhesive Joint Between A Laminated Composite And Metal Cylinder, Casey A. Talbot

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Because lowering weight as much as possible is desirable in all applications designed to go to space, the use of composite materials is desirable. Composites are materials that are made up of two or more separate materials usually with significantly different characteristics which remain separate and distinct in their completed state. Fiber-reinforced epoxy composites, in general, are very strong and light. Because most space structures cannot solely be made of composites, a method to join them with metals is needed. Adhesive joining, or gluing, has been determined to be the most promising option.

For the joining technique to be used, …

A Dynamic State Metabolic Journey: From Mass Spectrometry To Network Analysis Via Estimation Of Kinetic Parameters, Arockia Ranjitha Dhanasekaran Dec 2011

A Dynamic State Metabolic Journey: From Mass Spectrometry To Network Analysis Via Estimation Of Kinetic Parameters, Arockia Ranjitha Dhanasekaran

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The term "metabolism" refers to the chemical processes occurring in a living organism to convert the food consumed into the energy needed to maintain a living state. Metabolism consists of two states, namely, a dynamic state and a steady state. In the dynamic state, the rate of chemical conversion of a substance is proportional to the amount of substance available, whereas in the steady state this rate is constant and independent of the amount of substance present (Chapter 4 Figure 1). Like all other fields of engineering, metabolic engineering involves the analysis and synthesis of metabolism. Molecular biological tools for …

Fossil fuels will not be …

Accelerating Production Of Slow-Growing Intermountain West Native Plants By Modifying Their Microclimate, Sam A. Miller Dec 2011

Accelerating Production Of Slow-Growing Intermountain West Native Plants By Modifying Their Microclimate, Sam A. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water shortages are a recurring problem in the western US. As much as 70% of yearly municipal water consumption may be used to irrigate urban landscapes. Significant water savings can be realized by installing low water landscapes, where turfgrass is replaced by low water trees, shrubs, grasses, and perennials. Intermountain West (IMW) native trees and shrubs are excellent candidates for low water landscaping. However, due to their slow initial growth, many native trees and shrubs are simply unavailable to consumers, as they are not cost effective for nursery growers to produce. In an effort to accelerate the yearly growth rates …
