The Effects Of Gender And Elicitation Method On The Prosodic Cues Used By 7- To 11-Year-Old Children To Signal Sentence Type, Lacey Ann Powell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the prosodic cues used by 7 to 11 year-old children to signal questions and declarative statements in terms of changes in fundamental frequency (F0), duration, and intensity. Additional aims were to evaluate how children's use of prosody changes as a function of gender and method of elicitation. A group of 16 children participated in three different types of elicitation tasks (imitative, reading, and naturalistic). An acoustic analysis revealed that the participants produced the different sentence types using a variety of acoustic cues. Not only do children vary the mean of F0 and …

Toward A Transnational Framework: Aligning Internal And External Quality Assurance Processes, William Plater Aug 2011

Toward A Transnational Framework: Aligning Internal And External Quality Assurance Processes, William Plater

Higher Learning Research Communications

This article explores the tensions between internal and external quality assurance processes, making a case for the preeminence of internal actions to ensure the capacity of institutions to respond quickly and effectively to the rapidly evolving global conditions affecting all of higher education. As the forms and means of formal and informal learning evolve more rapidly than quality assurance and accrediting bodies can adapt, institutions themselves will have to take the steps necessary to ensure that students are actually learning at levels represented by a new array of credentials and to offer credible evidence to employers and others that the …

Semantic Transformation Of Search Requests For Improving The Results Of Web Search, Vladimir A. Fomichov, Anton V. Kirillov Aug 2011

Semantic Transformation Of Search Requests For Improving The Results Of Web Search, Vladimir A. Fomichov, Anton V. Kirillov

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The paper describes a new method of constructing semantic expansions of search requests for improving the results of Web search. This method is based on the theory of K-representations -a new theory of designing semantic-syntactic analyzers of natural language texts with the broad use of formal means for representing input, intermediary, and output data. The current version of the theory is set forth in a monograph published by Springer in 2010. The stated approach is implemented with the help of the Web programming language Java: an experimental search system AOS (Aspect Oriented Search) has been developed.

Home Literacy Activities In The Preschool Classroom: Increasing Participation Among Male Students, Lucia Adams Aug 2011

Home Literacy Activities In The Preschool Classroom: Increasing Participation Among Male Students, Lucia Adams

Education Masters

Through the lens of sociocultural theory, this action research paper looks into the home literacy activities of a group of six three-year old males and explores how the students ’ home literacy activities can be integrated into the preschool classroom to increase their participation. Because students bring a wealth of literacy knowledge and experience to school with them, having already mastered their primary discourse, it is imperative that this knowledge is used in the classroom to engage students in learning. interviewing By collecting home literacy diaries, and observing and six male participants, this study supports the idea that students’ home …

Representation Of Race In Children's Picture Books And How Students Respond To Them, Emily Conley Aug 2011

Representation Of Race In Children's Picture Books And How Students Respond To Them, Emily Conley

Education Masters

This study examined how race is represented in children's picture bokos and how students reacted to those representations. Research was conducted in a child care center. Data was collected through field observations, interviews, questionnaires, and audio recordings. The findings showed that the students are familiar with multicultural texts and are able to point out differences among characters and cultures. However, the students did not analyze the text from a critical standpoint. In order for students to use critical literacy, educators must understand it and incorporate it into their classrooms.

It Is Not All Greek To Me: The Interconnectedness Of A First Grader’S Greek And English Reading Strategies, Maria Katsetos Aug 2011

It Is Not All Greek To Me: The Interconnectedness Of A First Grader’S Greek And English Reading Strategies, Maria Katsetos

Education Masters

The current study examined the literacy skills that a bilingual first grader uses when reading and discussing texts in Greek and English. I worked with a first grader, Lauren, and her mother. The study consisted of interviewing the participants, assessing Lauren’s literacy skills, and observing Lauren and her mother read together. The findings of this study were that Lauren uses the same literacy strategies when reading books in Greek and English (this finding is concurrent with other studies) Lauren’s reading skills in Greek are less advanced than her reading skills in English and that the student prefers reading in English, …

Critical Talk: How Urban 8th Grade Students Critically Talk About The Holocaust, Jessica Klee

Education Masters

With in the confines of this action research project I answered my question about how urban 8 th graders talk critically, specifically about the Holocaust. Using the book Night by Elie Wiesel three students from an urban upstate New York school district met with me and discussed the Holocaust, particularly events around the novel. In addition to participating in two critical discussions, the students wrote in their journals, answered a questionnaire and responded to a picture. The journals, questionnaire, picture response and transcriptions were analyzed using the four dimensions model of critical literacy. The study showed that students were able …

Enhancing Reading Comprehension For Students With Autism, Cynthia Merrifield Aug 2011

Enhancing Reading Comprehension For Students With Autism, Cynthia Merrifield

Education Masters

This study examined the impact priming has on answering “right there” questions following the QAR frameworks for students with autism. Research was conducted in a 12:1:4 middle school classroom where the curriculum focuses on life skills instruction. Data was collected through a student questionnaire, parent conversation, classroom observations, and three individual work sessions with the student. The data shows priming to be a successful strategy to increase reading comprehension. A surprising discovery was when introducing new material to the student with autism, explicit/direct instruction across settings greatly impacted the student‟s performance. Through the review of theliterature and the findings of …

Transforming Atypical Challenges Into Innovative Solutions: A Gendered Analysis Of The Un Interagency Rehabilitation Program In Nepal, Sarabeth Harrelson Aug 2011

Transforming Atypical Challenges Into Innovative Solutions: A Gendered Analysis Of The Un Interagency Rehabilitation Program In Nepal, Sarabeth Harrelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nearly five years after signing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended ten years of civil war in Nepal, key issues are still unresolved and political progress on implementation has been slow at its best. While every disarmament demobilization and reintegration (DDR) operation is unique, Nepal's DDR process has included atypical conditions such as no government support, continued military command over program participants, an unusually long time spent in cantonments prior to discharge, and the absence of an adequate pre-planning phase. This analysis is presented in the form of a case study and examines the United Nations Interagency Rehabilitation Program …

Stinky Pinkies: Variations, A. Ross Eckler Aug 2011

Stinky Pinkies: Variations, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

The standard stinky pinky is a two-word rhyming phrase such as FLOWER POWER or HAIRY LARRY. Common variations are achieved by inserting words such as THE or 'N' (as in SLICE IT 'n' ICE IT, to skin and freeze an animal, or CATCH the SCRATCH, to contract a case of poison ivy). Buzzwords (Crown Publishers, 1993) has a variety of unusual variations; a type-collection is given below.

Fortunate Reversals, Richard Lederer Aug 2011

Fortunate Reversals, Richard Lederer

Word Ways

We intrepid logologists love to switch around letters within words -- adjacent letters (UNITED UNTIED), separated letters (CONVERSATION CONSERVATION), and initial and terminal letters (LATCHES SATCHEL). In some words we can interchange each half to form new words. Dmitri Borgmann called these leapfrogging specimens "cyclic transpositions." I prefer the more playful "fortunate reversals."

Funny Words 3, A. Anil Aug 2011

Funny Words 3, A. Anil

Word Ways

Funny haha arguably, funny peculiar inarguably. No legit dictionary would touch these newords. So why create them? James Mancuso (eg, 11-124) mostly coins realistic neologisms, like Barbara Wallraff's Word Fugutives, as possible real words. My motive is more frivolous -- an urge to play logodaedaly just for fun, cavalierly ignoring my vast ignorance of existing words. There are some one million non-proper English words, give or take a million. Of course this spread allows the possibility (a million minus a million) that there are no legitimate English words, bastards every one! I leap on that leveled playing field scenario …

Scrabble And Retrograde Analysis, Simon Norton Aug 2011

Scrabble And Retrograde Analysis, Simon Norton

Word Ways

Reading Mike Keith's article "Scrabble-Tile Double Word Squares and Rectangles" (WW Feb 2011) led me to ask the following question: which of the word grids he gave are actually legal positions in a game of Scrabble? Chess problemists use the term "retrograde analysis" for the study of how chess positions might have arisen in a legal game; this concept is of course equally applicable to other games, including Scrabble.

Iambic Double Vowel Shift Cascades, A. Anil Aug 2011

Iambic Double Vowel Shift Cascades, A. Anil

Word Ways

VOWEL (SHIFT) CASCADES (02-53,192) are sentential or meaningful WORD LADDERS that run thru the vowels in one spot, eg, Bad bed bid bod bud. (Bedbugs, VD or pregnancy?) Vowel cascades can also be PHONIC: Bait beat: "Bite!" bought boot (The Shoe of the Fisherman). Susan Thorpe (11-155) calls meaningless examples of PHONETIC VOWEL ROTATIONS, although rotator has a prior wordplay meaning as a non-mirror word inversion like up/dn (see up/dn). She gives many good non-sentential examples with long vowel sounds but ignores short vowels.
