The Sentence, The Novel, And Autobiography: The Histories Of Reading And Self In Bunyan And Rousseau, Samuel Rowe Jan 2011

The Sentence, The Novel, And Autobiography: The Histories Of Reading And Self In Bunyan And Rousseau, Samuel Rowe

Honors Papers

This study analyzes late-seventeenth and eighteenth-century autobiographies in order to address questions regarding the relationship between the history of reading and the "history of the self" in the West. More particularly, it examines the treatment of reading and textuality in John Bunyan's "Grace Abounding" and Jean-Jacques Rousseau's "Confessions" in order to suggest that the historical phenomenon Michel Foucault describes as the "emergence of Man" can be understood in terms of the rise of mass print culture and subsequent development of extensive reading practices during the eighteenth century.

Getting Ahead Or Left Behind? The Politics And Policy Of Education Reform In The United States, Anna Elisabeth Brown Jan 2011

Getting Ahead Or Left Behind? The Politics And Policy Of Education Reform In The United States, Anna Elisabeth Brown

Honors Papers

Are teacher characteristics a significant factor in student learning? If so, which characteristics are effective? An original analysis of reading test scores of 5,000 fourth graders across the United States confirmed the difficulties researchers face when measuring teacher quality; it appears to account for only small variations in scores. Given the complexity, first, of the politics of "teacher quality" and, second, the improvement of primary education in the U.S., I offer some modest recommendations.

Cultural Production And Ephemeral Art: Feminicide And The Geography Of Memory In Ciudad Juárez, 1998-2008, Alice Laurel Driver Jan 2011

Cultural Production And Ephemeral Art: Feminicide And The Geography Of Memory In Ciudad Juárez, 1998-2008, Alice Laurel Driver

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

This dissertation examines representations of feminicide victims in documentary film, novels, non-fiction, art, and graffiti and argues that these images express anxiety about they way women traverse and inhabit the geography of Ciudad Juárez, often giving precedence to the idea of the public female body as hypersexualized. In order to reclaim memory of the victims some cultural producers focus on the testimonial form in which victims’ families and other activists share their stories or construct informal memorials in the city; these remembrances later appear in works of non-fiction, film, and art, as markers of the process of creating and preserving …

Formality, Bryce Emley Jan 2011

Formality, Bryce Emley

HIM 1990-2015

Of the many aspects of the composition of poetry, the most common component of the form involves emotional response. There is an infinite number of ways to write a poem, and likewise an infinite number of forms which a poem can be structured according to. In writing this collection of poems composing my thesis, I set out to write poetry in as many ways as I could to explore how different forms, devices, voices, points of view, sounds, tones, and as many other variables as I could think of affect poetry as stimulus. The poems in this collection cover a …

Talking The Talk: The Confusing, Conflicting And Contradictory Communicative Role Of Workplace Jargon In Modern Organizations, Neal Lloyd Jones Jan 2011

Talking The Talk: The Confusing, Conflicting And Contradictory Communicative Role Of Workplace Jargon In Modern Organizations, Neal Lloyd Jones

Open Access Master's Theses

The use of jargon or buzzwords, as they are popularly known, in modern corporate organizations is well known, yet little research exists to shed any communicative light on this linguistic phenomenon. While it is commonly derided among business journalists, “communications consultants” and others within the organizations themselves, whether or not this specific form of language has any proven and demonstrable positive or negative effects on organizational communication or broader organizational culture has yet to be determined. Also, given the documented and important role of language in shaping the culture of an organization and the function of language in instilling organizational …

Cardiovascular Arousal In Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Idiographic Analysis, Daniella Maria Aube Jan 2011

Cardiovascular Arousal In Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Idiographic Analysis, Daniella Maria Aube

Open Access Master's Theses

Stress in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is poorly understood, yet can be detrimental to the functioning of these individuals. Stress-related problems are more common in ASD than the typical population, and individuals with ASD often have poorer coping skills. It is crucial to understand stress responses in these individuals, to help them better learn, cope, and prevent problem behavior associated with stressful events and heightened arousal. However, traditional measures of stress (e.g. self-reports) are often unreliable in this population, due to communication deficits in ASD. Studying physiological responses is an alternative, potentially more accurate, way to study stress …

An Implicit Theory Of Self-Esteem: The Consequences Of Perceived Self-Esteem For Romantic Desirability, Virgil Zeigler-Hill, Erin M. Myers

Faculty Publications

The provision of information appears to be an important property of self-esteem as evidenced by previous research concerning the status-tracking and status-signaling models of self-esteem. The present studies examine whether there is an implicit theory of self-esteem that leads individuals to assume targets with higher levels of self-esteem possess more desirable characteristics than those with lower levels of self-esteem. Across 6 studies, targets with ostensibly higher levels of self-esteem were generally rated as more attractive and as more desirable relationship partners than those with lower levels of self-esteem. It is important to note, however, that this general trend did not …

Are Corporations "Subjects" Of International Law?, Jose E. Alvarez Jan 2011

Are Corporations "Subjects" Of International Law?, Jose E. Alvarez

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

Courts and scholars often attempt to draw legal conclusions from the status of entities, whether states, international organizations or corporations. Debates concerning whether corporations are “subjects” of international law and the legal conclusions that supposedly follow from this are particularly vociferous within Alien Tort Claims litigation in U.S. courts. Using the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Citizens United as a cautionary tale, the author argues that drawing legal conclusions from the fact of “subject-hood” is fraught with peril, particularly in the case of corporations. He argues that such top-down approaches are likely to lead to unintended consequences and that corporations, …

A Distribution Arising From A Random Walk On The Plane / Sim Shin Zhu, Shin Zhu Sim

Student Works (2010-2019)

This thesis proposed a new distribution to model under-, equi- and overdispersion in count data. It arises as a particular case of a modified random walk on the plane, and includes the binomial, negative binomial and shifted negative binomial as special cases. Some properties, test of hypothesis for equi-dispersion, simulation study of power, parameter estimation by maximum likelihood and a squared distance method based on the probability generating function are considered. The proposed distribution is compared with existing distributions like the COM-Poisson and generalized Poisson for modelling dispersion. It is shown to be a flexible model in applications by illustrating …

Analyzing Arabic-English Interlanguage Coda Consonant Clusters : Optimality Theoretic Approach / Ala'a Mohammed Amin A Turkustani, Ala'a Mohammed Amin A Turkustani

Student Works (2010-2019)

The study investigates the problematic English coda consonant clusters which Arabic speakers have in pronouncing English. This investigation involves a constraint-based analysis of interlanguage syllable structure within the optimality framework to see how the native language (NL) interferes in L2 pronunciation. The study presents an analysis of interlanguage (IL) syllable structure and answers a question in how NL interfere in Arabic speakers articulation of ESL syllable structure. It also investigates the effective role of the markedness of the forms in contributing to such difficulty in pronunciation. In other words, how these two factors affect Arabic speakers` pronunciation of English coda …
