Modeling Elementary Aged Students' Fluency Growth In Written Expression: Predicting Fluency Growth For Girls And Boys In General Education, Adrea J. Truckenmiller

Psychology - Dissertations

Research on evidence-based writing intervention practices as well as reliable and valid assessments of elementary-aged students' writing fluency has been lacking compared to other academic areas (i.e., reading). Performance feedback interventions targeting writing fluency are gaining empirical support (Eckert et al., 2006); however, growth trajectories for elementary-aged students' writing fluency over a short period of time and contributing variables have not been explored. The purpose of this study was to model students' writing fluency growth as it relates to: (a) instructional practices, (b) sex differences, and (c) individual student's initial level of writing fluency. A total of 133 third-grade students …

Old Broken Crayons: Adolescent Artists With Autism In Art Education, Corrie Burdick

Teaching and Leadership - Dissertations

This research engages a combined qualitative methodology of arts-informed research and critical descriptive ethnography to study thirteen adolescent artists with autism as they engage in art making across multiple art education contexts. This study revealed the perceptions of stakeholders about art and autism that informed the access these adolescent artists had to art education and art materials. These perceptions included varying ideas of competence, ability and struggle associated with an identity as `autistic'. In the examination of these adolescents' experiences the engagement with art making and the role of art in the lives of these artists is explored. It is …

The Impact Of Single-Gender Scheduling On Students In A Title I School, Janet L. Moss Jan 2011

The Impact Of Single-Gender Scheduling On Students In A Title I School, Janet L. Moss

Education Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation was designed to examine the impact that single-gender scheduling would have on students who attend a struggling Title I middle school. The importance of the middle level cannot be denied. Strong research points to this time in a student's life as the pivotal crux on which success and failure are balanced. Middle level educators are charged with the responsibility of tipping the scales in the favor of student success by arming them with the skills they will need to survive and succeed.

A middle school in the northeastern part of Mecklenburg County had the majority of its students …

What Can Be Learned From The Experiences Of Various Societies In Dealing With Their Principal Trouble Spots?, I Benson Jan 2011

What Can Be Learned From The Experiences Of Various Societies In Dealing With Their Principal Trouble Spots?, I Benson

Law Conference Papers

Introduction

In both South Africa and Canada religions per se have not been principal trouble spots for a very long time. What has been very much at issue is the treatment of religious communities and religious believers by the State and from time to time disputes between rights claimants of one sort in relation to rights claimants of another. There are many differences between the two countries but in this paper I shall look for some common themes to evaluate a few of the more significant areas of conflict that engage religious pluralism. Most importantly, however, I shall examine a …

Some Forms Of Trust, Willem A. Devries Jan 2011

Some Forms Of Trust, Willem A. Devries

Philosophy

Three forms of trust: topic-focused trust, general trust, and personal trust are distinguished. Personal trust is argued to be the most fundamental form of trust, deeply connected with the construction of one’s self. Information technology has posed new problems for us in assessing and developing appropriate forms of the trust that is central to our personhood.

Networks And Language In The 2010 Election, Avishay Livne, Matthew P. Simmons, W. Abraham Gong, Eytan Adar, Lada A. Adamic

2011

The midterm (2010) election in the U.S. presented a unique opportunity to study the online social media strategy of various political groups. Although candidates had previously leveraged social media, the prevalence of use during this election allows us to study a significant percentage of candidates and a novel glimpse into their networks and messaging. In combination, the networks and associated content reflect positioning of candidates both structurally and in framing in relation to other politicians. In our work, we study the use of Twitter by House, Senate and gubernatorial candidates during the midterm elections in the U.S. Our data includes …

The Writing Center Annual Report: 2010-2011, Kelly Webster Jan 2011

The Writing Center Annual Report: 2010-2011, Kelly Webster

The Writing Center: Reports

During the 2010-2011 academic year, The Writing Center, an Office for Student Success department, answered President Engstrom’s call for a “spirit of discourse” on the University of Montana campus. Writing Center staff engaged students in intellectual conversations, challenging students to develop as writers and thinkers who contribute to local and global conversations. Toward this end, The Writing Center (TWC) sustained its one-to-one tutoring services and implemented new initiatives aimed at improving student writing across the curriculum. These 2010-2011 academic year activities responded to and engendered student and faculty demand for TWC’s services as evidenced by TWC’s facilitation of 3,852 tutoring …

Teacher Understanding And Perception Of A Response To Intervention Program In A Rural, Western North Carolina School District, Dwight Dean King Jan 2011

Teacher Understanding And Perception Of A Response To Intervention Program In A Rural, Western North Carolina School District, Dwight Dean King

Education Dissertations and Projects

Response to Intervention, aka Response to Instruction (RtI), is a multi-tiered instructional process designed to provide research-based interventions to struggling learners. It has recently gained increased popularity with the perceived failure of the discrepancy formula model of placing children in special education services and with the recent reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Because RtI is just gaining ground in the field of education, limited research regarding teachers' perceptions of the process is available. This research project utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining survey and interview data, to assess teacher understanding and perception of RtI in a rural North …

This dissertation was designed to measure the impact of instructional techniques in the Foundations of Algebra classroom to bridge linguistic barriers between Hispanic students and the language of teaching. Two consecutive years of failing to meet anticipated yearly growth among Hispanic students in Algebra I, as determined by the North Carolina End of Course exams, indicated a cognitive gap among these students when it comes to learning mathematics.

The writer developed an experiment to be delivered among 9 sections of Algebra in a North Carolina high school. The control group used Microsoft PowerPoint slides created for every lesson plan determined …

Parsing Combinatory Categorial Grammar With Answer Set Programming: Preliminary Report, Yuliya Lierler, Peter Schüller Jan 2011

Parsing Combinatory Categorial Grammar With Answer Set Programming: Preliminary Report, Yuliya Lierler, Peter Schüller

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Combinatory categorial grammar (CCG) is a grammar formalism used for natural language parsing. CCG assigns structured lexical categories to words and uses a small set of combinatory rules to combine these categories to parse a sentence. In this work we propose and implement a new approach to CCG parsing that relies on a prominent knowledge representation formalism, answer set programming (ASP) — a declarative programming paradigm. We formulate the task of CCG parsing as a planning problem and use an ASP computational tool to compute solutions that correspond to valid parses. Compared to other approaches, there is no need to …

Perception Of Social Presence In Asynchronous And Synchronous Online Discussion From The Perspective Of Native And Non-Native Speaker, Abdullah Alruhaimi Jan 2011

Perception Of Social Presence In Asynchronous And Synchronous Online Discussion From The Perspective Of Native And Non-Native Speaker, Abdullah Alruhaimi

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The technology innovation of telecommunication gave confidence to educational institutions to substitute some of their courses from traditional courses into virtual ones. This switch in education inspired globalization. The learners use either synchronous or asynchronous communication tools to interact with each other. Most previous studies in this field show that social presence is correlated with learner achievement satisfaction and interaction. So the researcher measured the level of social presence for both groups of learners, native and nonnative speakers, across both types of online communication, synchronous and asynchronous communication. The researcher conducted a 2x2 split-plot ANOVA design with repeated measure for …
