Perceptions Of The Culture And Communications Standards, Jana Sandarg, Carol Wilkerson
Perceptions Of The Culture And Communications Standards, Jana Sandarg, Carol Wilkerson
Dimensions
This article discusses the impact of the Standards for Foreign Language Teaching in the 21st Century on language programs at American universities. Surveys were administered to American students and to faculty at a university in Spain asking questions about the five goal areas of the standards. Responses from these groups were analyzed and compared with responses of faculty at American institutions. Although most faculty informants in the U.S. and in Spain said they were familiar with the goals of the standards, findings indicate that grammatical accuracy is perceived to be the primary focus of language programs in the U.S. Faculty …

Does The Automatic Stay Of The Bankruptcy Code Trigger The Illinois Savings Statute?: Why The Illinois Supreme Court Needs To Address The Issue, Seth Howard
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
In 1983, the Illinois Supreme Court held that a plaintiff’s state court statute of limitations period is tolled by the automatic stay provision of the Bankruptcy Code when a defendant debtor claims bankruptcy. Thus in an Illinois State Court, a plaintiff will have the total number of days that the automatic stay was in place added to the regular statute of limitations to file a claim. However, in the decades since Illinois’s interpretation of the automatic stay provision, a vast majority of other jurisdictions have held that Bankruptcy Code compels no such modification to a state statute of limitations period. …

Critical Race Theory And Education: Mapping A Legacy Of Activism And Scholarship, Kafi D. Kumasi
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
This chapter explores the intellectual origins and historical precursors of Critical Race Theory (CRT), a lively branch of critical social theory. One of the goals of this work is to help novice educational scholars learn more about the history of CRT and to specifically see how it is used by contemporary scholars in the field of education to address a range of equity issues. The chapter begins by contextualizing contemporary discourse on race and education. It then chronicles the life work of key individuals whose antiracist, anti- colonial ideas and actions helped lay the foundation for the body of legal …

The Complexity Of Jurisdictional Clarity, Scott Dodson
The Complexity Of Jurisdictional Clarity, Scott Dodson
Faculty Publications
The ideal of clear and simple jurisdictional rules seems like a no-brainer. Clarity in areas of subject-matter jurisdiction generally reduces the cost of litigating those issues and thus preserves litigant and judicial resources for the merits of a dispute. As a result, scholars and justices regularly promote the rhetoric of jurisdictional clarity. Yet no one has probed that rhetoric or reconciled it with the reality of subject-matter jurisdiction doctrine, which is anything but clear and simple. This Article begins to fill that gap, and, in the process, shifts the perspective of existing conversations between rules and standards and between mandates …

"Justice Is Blind": A Model For Analyzing Metaphor Transformations And Narratives In Actual Discourse, L. David Ritchie
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this article I present a model of how metaphors are transformed and re-presented as narratives, how this process helps shape communicative interactions, and how it contributes to relevance effects and the generation of meaning, often by simultaneously affecting multiple cognitive contexts. I demonstrate the application of the model to samples of discourse from current research and show how it can contribute to understanding troubled communicative relationships and potentially to improving communication in situations of misunderstanding and conflict.

Rti For English Language Learners: Appropriately Using Screening And Progress Monitoring Tools To Improve Instructional Outcomes, Julie Esparza Brown, Amanda K. Sanford
Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
This brief provides a framework for using Response to Intervention (RTI) with students who are English Language Learners (ELL) from Hispanic backgrounds. The first section examines the characteristics of these students; defines the RTI process; and then models how students? linguistic, cultural, and experiential backgrounds can guide appropriate screening, progress monitoring, and goal setting that will help promote English literacy. Although the majority of ELLs in the United States are Hispanic and come from Spanish-speaking homes, students classified as ELL speak more than 350 languages (Ethnologue, 2009). This brief provides an example of the RTI framework for a student whose …

在述說故事與醫學之間-談敘事醫學與醫療照護, 競明 劉
Journal of Medical Education
Traduciendo Y Formando El Plan General De San Joaquín Y Santa María En Colaboración Con Las Clases De City And Regional Planning De California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo Para El Año 2040, Kelsey Joy Turner
World Languages and Cultures
For my senior project I, along with another Modern Languages and Literatures student, Asia Croson, assisted two separate classes of the City and Regional Planning department to survey the communities of Santa Maria and San Joaquin in order to help compile a general plan for each city for the year 2040. I worked alongside another Modern Languages and Literatures student, Asia Croson. We translated presentations for the community meetings held in San Joaquin throughout the process, as well as facilitating small group discussions within those meetings. The existing general plans are outdated and many citizens are living in less than …

Words And Things In Yucatán: Poststructuralism And The Everyday Life Of Mayan Multiculturalism, Fernando Armstrong-Fumero
Anthropology: Faculty Publications
This article draws on ethnographic examples to examine how rural Maya-speakers in the Mexican state of Yucatán ground the experience of identity politics in quotidian engagements with pre-Hispanic objects and utterances in the Maya language. My argument is intended as a revision of models of critical scholarship that have been influenced by poststructuralism and that place an overwhelming emphasis on discourse as a modality through which politically viable identities are created and performed. Specific examples show how vernacular multiculturalism is shaped by the agency of forms of language use and physical objects that have been a part of local life-worlds …

Civilized Borders: A Study Of Israel's New Border Regime, Irus Braverman
Journal Articles
At Israel’s new border crossings with the West Bank, modernization has become the buzz-word: not only referring to modernized mechanical means – a Wall, newly designed crossings, and micro-mechanics such as turnstiles, signs, and fences – but also to new and sophisticated scientific technologies, such as sensor machines and scanners, and to modernized means of identification, such as advanced computer systems and biometric cards. This paper considers the transformation of the Israel-West Bank border to be a result of four major processes: reterritorialization, bureaucratization, neoliberalization, and de-humanization. I utilize in-depth interviews with top military and state officials and with human …

Joe The Ploughman Reads The Constitution, Or, The Poverty Of Public Meaning Originalism, Jack N. Rakove
San Diego Law Review
Originalism is hot. A couple of decades ago, one might have thought that its death knell had sounded when the Supreme Court nomination of Robert Bork failed in the Senate. Although one wondered exactly what kind of originalism Justice Bork might have performed in practice, he was regarded as the theory's leading academic spokesman, and the defeat of his nomination might have served as a fatal blow to the cause. Within a few years, however, Justice Antonin Scalia published his lecture Originalism: The Lesser Evil, signaling that the cause remained alive and well. Although Justice Scalia's views of the practice …
Humor In Code-Mixed Airline Advertising, Maria Jose Garcia Vizcaino
Humor In Code-Mixed Airline Advertising, Maria Jose Garcia Vizcaino
Department of Spanish and Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This article examines how humor works in the code-mixed advertising campaigns of the Spanish airline company Vueling. Drawing on the fetishism approach to multilingual advertising (Kelly-Holmes, 2005) and the theory of incongruity (Raskin, 1985), this paper explores three main types of humorous deviations in Vueling campaigns: structural, phonetic, and visual. The analysis confirms that humor in Vueling ads is produced by deviations at the formal rather than semantic level of language, specifically through the insertion of foreign languages (mainly English and French) into Spanish colloquial expressions. These foreign elements are partially “domesticated” into local Spanish frames by creative code-mixing mechanisms …

Applications Of The Theories Of Mikhail Bakhtin In Science Education, Jason Delgatto
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the work of Russian philosopher and literary critic Mikhail Bakhtin (1895 – 1975), and more specifically, how his theories on language in a social context apply to science education. In response to ongoing concerns regarding declining student achievement in the sciences, this paper follows a growing trend to integrate perspectives from the fields of language, anthropology and sociology, in order to reform science instruction and improve student scientific literacy. Bakhtin’s major theories around dialogue, and his views on the celebration of carnival, are presented through an analysis of secondary resources that …
Living Soil And Sustainability Education: Linking Pedagogy And Pedology, Dilafruz R. Williams, Jonathan D. Brown
Living Soil And Sustainability Education: Linking Pedagogy And Pedology, Dilafruz R. Williams, Jonathan D. Brown
Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Sustainability is now permeating educational institutions. Yet the emerging discourse on sustainability education is in many ways caught in a modern web of theoretical, ontological, and epistemological assumptions that are incongruent with sustainability. We introduce an ecologically grounded metaphoric language rooted in living soil as an alternative regenerative framework for linking sustainability pedagogy with pedology (the study of soil). Five principles that guide this relationship are presented: valuing biocultural diversity, sensitizing our senses, recognizing place, cultivating interconnection, and embracing practical experience. Nurtured within an environment of curiosity, wonder, and questioning, and set to the rhythm and scale of localized ecologies, …

Tropologies Of Tradition And (Post)Modernity In Nwagwu's Forever Chimes, James Tar Tsaaior
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Tropologies of Tradition and (Post)modernity in Nwagwu's Forever Chimes" James Tar Tsaaior explores Mark Nwagu's novel and postulates that the author succeeds in constructing a novelistic universe both concrete and fluid in its re-invention or re-fabrication of cultural traditions and identity formation processes. This universe is simultaneously traditional/indigenous and (post)modern. However, rather than to delineate these cultural formations through difference as oppositional categories, Nwagu suggests grounds for multicultural interactions and transactions. In this cultural schema, none of the cultures claims exclusive preserve or pre-eminence over the other as what exists is a democratic space for the …
