Urgent Reform 'In The Name Of Our Children': Revamping The Role Of Disproportionate Minority Contact In Federal Juvenile Justice Legislation, Atasi Satpathy
Urgent Reform 'In The Name Of Our Children': Revamping The Role Of Disproportionate Minority Contact In Federal Juvenile Justice Legislation, Atasi Satpathy
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
Disproportionate minority contact ("DMC") has plagued the United States juvenile justice system for decades, but federal legislation has lacked the clarity and guidance to battle this affliction. A strong partnership must exist between state and federal entities in order to directly target DMC and thereby decrease the appallingly disproportionate number of minority children who come into contact with the juvenile justice system. This Note discusses the problem of DMC, identifies state and private efforts to combat the crisis, and indicates deficiencies in the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act as well as its reauthorization bill, S. 678. The Note urges …

The Global Dimension Of The Current Economic Crisis And The Benefits Of Alternative Dispute Resolution, Rebecca Golbert
The Global Dimension Of The Current Economic Crisis And The Benefits Of Alternative Dispute Resolution, Rebecca Golbert
Nevada Law Journal
The Conference on the Economic Crisis and Conflict Resolution, sponsored by the Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, William S. Boyd School of Law, concerned the application of mediation and other forms of cost-effective dispute resolution to specific dimensions of the domestic economic crisis—namely foreclosure and bankruptcy. Among other relevant themes, the conference also examined cost-effective dispute resolution in community mediation, online technology, and dispute-wise organizations. An economic downturn, however, does not respect borders. The current economic crisis is no exception. Thus, I turn our attention to the global dimension of the current economic …

Deficits In Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorders When Processing Multiple Objects In Dynamic Scenes, Kirsten O'Hearn, Laura Lakusta, Elizabeth Schroer, Nancy Minshew, Beatriz Luna
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
People with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) process visual information in a manner that is distinct from typically developing individuals. They may be less sensitive to people's goals and, more generally, focus on visual details instead of the entire scene. To examine these differences, people with and without ASD were asked to detect changes in dynamic scenes with multiple elements. Participants viewed a brief video of a person or an inanimate object (the "figure") moving from one object to another; after a delay, they reported whether a second video was the same or different. Possible changes included the figure, the object …

Invariance In The Factor Structure Of Translated Instruments: Multiple Group Confirmatory Factor Analysis And Mimic Models, Fatma Ayyad
Dissertations
When factorial invariance is established across translated forms of an instrument, the meaning of the construct crosses language/cultures. If factorial invariance is not established, score discrepancies may represent true language group differences or faulty translation. This study seeks to disentangle this by determining whether cultural/linguistic variance can be decomposed separately from construct variance intended in the measuring instrument.
Translated forms of the God Mediated Control factor of the Belief in Personal Control Scale (BPCS) (Berrenberg, 1987) was analyzed across multiple samples for measurement and structural invariance among American native English speakers, Arab native Arabic speakers, and Arab bilingual Arabic/English speakers. …

Narrative Preferences And Administrative Due Process, Jason A. Cade
Narrative Preferences And Administrative Due Process, Jason A. Cade
Scholarly Works
This Article illustrates, through sociolinguistic analysis, how an adjudicator’s biases against certain narrative styles can influence his or her assessments of credibility, treatment of parties, and decision-making in the administrative law setting. Poverty lawyers have long observed that many claimants in the administrative state continue to face procedural and discursive obstacles. Applying insights from a growing field of inter-disciplinary research, including conversation analysis, linguistics, and cognitive studies, this Article builds upon those observations by more precisely exploring through a case study of an unemployment insurance benefits hearing how structural and narrative biases can work to deny an applicant due process …

The Promotion Of “Character” And Its Relationship To Retention In Higher Education, Karen Noble, Robyn Henderson
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
With transition to university a strong focus across most higher
education institutions, undergraduate teacher education programs have been
increasingly scrutinised regarding their (in)ability to adequately prepare students
for the challenging social contexts that they will meet. As a result, there has been
a burgeoning of approaches which initiate beginning students. In the Education
Faculty of a regional Australian university, the FYI (First Year Infusion/For Your
Information) Program attempts to build capacity among pre-service students in a
supportive learning community. In an intentionally created context, the program
provides a Learning Circle approach to student support. Through consciously
infusing the value of …

Exploring The Effects Of Text Messaging On The Spelling Skills Of Ninth And 12th Grade Students, James G. Muhammad
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Text messaging has been criticized for a perceived negative impact on spelling skills of students and its increasing appearance in formal school papers. This paper presents a study of the effects of text messaging on the spelling skills of ninth and 12th grade students at a U.S. high school in a Chicago suburb. The 20 students – six in the ninth grade group and 14 in the 12th grade group – were given a questionnaire concerning their texting practices and a grade-appropriate spelling test. They also were asked if it is appropriate to use textisms in formal writings …
“The Day Everything Became Nothing”: Finding Meaning In The Postapocalyptic, Joe Chellino
“The Day Everything Became Nothing”: Finding Meaning In The Postapocalyptic, Joe Chellino
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Explored in this work are three texts: Cormac McCarthy’s novel, The Road; Douglas Coupland’s novel, Girlfriend in a Coma; and Robert Kirkman’s ongoing serialized comic book, The Walking Dead. After a discussion of apocalyptic and postapocalyptic fictions and their ubiquity and popularity in contemporary culture, each work will be analyzed individually to explore each author’s message regarding postapocalyptic concerns. These three texts have been chosen as each represents a point along a loose continuum of high-to-low art. Primarily, this thesis will focus on how each author approaches systems of meaning-making and systems of understanding in postapocalyptic settings …

Understanding the complexities inherent in descriptions of research journals can take significant time and energy, and in the end leave the average psychologist and psychology student wondering—what does it all mean? Why does this matter? In this column, I attempt to provide information to illuminate how journals are described and why we care. Additionally, I will review how our own journal, Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research, measures up on these criteria. In short, Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research is a scholarly journal that is peer-reviewed and indexed. Let’s explore these areas so you will feel very excited about …

Writing Program Design For Esl Writers, Kacie M. Kiser
Writing Program Design For Esl Writers, Kacie M. Kiser
English Theses & Dissertations
Research and scholarship in the field of second-language writing have suggested that English as second language students (ESLs) require different modes of instruction than their native English speaking peers within the composition classroom (Matsuda, 1996; Silva, 1994). Yet ESL students are commonly marginalized in institutions' writing programs due to several commonplace beliefs shared by administrators that ESL students can be taught according to the same standards as mainstream students. Therefore, writing program administrators and instructors often do not have specific knowledge of ESL writing issues and, thus, do not know how to pedagogically accommodate these students or design a program …
Indefinite Detention Under The Laws Of War, Chris Jenks, Eric Talbot Jensen
Indefinite Detention Under The Laws Of War, Chris Jenks, Eric Talbot Jensen
Faculty Scholarship
The recent acquittal of the first Guantanamo Bay detainee to stand trial in U.S. federal court on all but one of the 286 charges he faced stemming from the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa has reinvigorated the discussion on indefinite detention under the laws of war. While the issue has been raised in the past, the discussion hasn’t extended beyond stating that the law of war, or law of armed conflict (LOAC) as it is often called, provides a legal basis for detention, including detention for the duration of hostilities. In fact, the Obama Administration has made …

Talking Masturbation: Men, Women, And Sexuality Through Playful Discourse, Geoffrey Evans-Grimm
Honors Projects
This study seeks to understand the relationship between talking about masturbation and masturbation as an everyday practice in the United States. This essay is arranged in terms of a number of overlapping sections that converge to offer a clearer interpretive context for a discussion of the results of the questionnaire and interview data. The first part of my essay is an attempt to make sense of the cultural history and to situate conceptions about masturbation and attempts to regulate it up to present day. Then, as a gendered talk, it is necessary to engage in a theoretical discussion of gender …
