Bridging Professional Development And Context: Integrating Mathematics And Academic Language In A District Facing Takeover, Patricia Swanson, David Whitenack Apr 2011

Bridging Professional Development And Context: Integrating Mathematics And Academic Language In A District Facing Takeover, Patricia Swanson, David Whitenack

Faculty Publications

This quasi-experimental, multi-phase study uses mixed methods to evaluate a professional development initiative focused on integrating mathematics and academic language. The context is a highly diverse urban district facing state takeover. The professional development focused on the understanding of key mathematics concepts and developing content-specific academic language. It linked explicitly to district-adopted texts and prescribed lesson formats. Teachers perceived the strategies to be feasible and beneficial to student learning, and had high rates of implementation. Nonetheless, pacing guides pressuring teachers to quickly cover content pose challenges for continued implementation. Implications for (1) professional development focusing on integrating subject-matter content and …

Marathon: From Myth To The Modern Era, Alana Dewitt '11 Apr 2011

Marathon: From Myth To The Modern Era, Alana Dewitt '11

Honor Scholar Theses

The marathon race has been subject to a history spanning over two thousand years. From the first alleged run of the marathon, performed during the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, marathons have fascinated thousands; however, despite strong interest in the topic today, during the Middle Ages there was a time when the marathon was barely discussed. Since antiquity athletes have been honored in stone, in verse, and possibly even in the decorative frieze of the Parthenon. In our modern age all types of runners – beginners to elites – run marathons on every continent covering the planet. Motivations of …

Representations Of English In France: Conflict And Opportunity In Language And Identity, Matt Brauer '11

Honor Scholar Theses

It is not hard to find English spoken in France. Amid the blue and white signs announcing different RER lines in the Paris metro, one announces: “RER A: Destination Dreams,” pointing the way to EuroDisney. Behind the lines of waiting passengers, billboards hang against the white-tiled walls. An advertising campaign for a French car maker announces a “Baby Boom chez Renault,” two well-known French soccer players pose in Nike track jackets next to the words “V is for Victory. By Claude Makele and Hatem Ben Arfa,” and a fruit juice company promises “Happy Fruit Moments,” recommending “Remixez votre After Work.” …

Philosophy, Science, And Belles-Lettres In Syriac And Christian Arabic Literature: A Gentle Introduction And Survey, Adam C. Mccollum Apr 2011

Philosophy, Science, And Belles-Lettres In Syriac And Christian Arabic Literature: A Gentle Introduction And Survey, Adam C. Mccollum

HMML Lectures

It might be assumed that the genres of Syriac and Christian Arabic literature are made up exclusively (or almost so) of sacred topics (Bible, commentary, liturgy, asceticism, hagiography, theology, etc.), the writers, scribes, and readers in these communities often being monks, presbyters, deacons, and bishops. A broad look at the surviving evidence of this literature, however, shows an immense interest in subjects not directly connected to the church, monastery, or Christian life at all, among them philosophy, science, and belles-lettres. This paper offers a basic overview of these subjects as Syriac and Christian Arabic authors dealt with them, especially from …

The Experience Of Guatemalans In Chattanooga, Tn, Heather Scholes Apr 2011

The Experience Of Guatemalans In Chattanooga, Tn, Heather Scholes

Honors Theses

Starting in the 1980s, Latin American immigration in the United States began undergoing a series of significant adaptations in response to changing government policies and economic relocation trends. A widespread shift toward permanent settlement alongside significant economic restructuring and growth in the Southeast opened the door for many low-skill workers in nontraditional settlement areas, especially in the Southeast. Chattanooga, Tennessee, has participated in this process and demonstrates certain peculiarities, particularly in regards to its large number of Guatemalan immigrants. Characterized by a unique culture, history, and family of languages, these Guatemalans' powerful stories remain untold largely due to language barriers …

Reconstructing The History Of Marriage Strategies In Indo-European–Speaking Societies: Monogamy And Polygyny, Laura Fortunato Apr 2011

Reconstructing The History Of Marriage Strategies In Indo-European–Speaking Societies: Monogamy And Polygyny, Laura Fortunato

Human Biology

Explanations for the emergence of monogamous marriage have focused on the cross-cultural distribution of marriage strategies, thus failing to account for their history. In this paper I reconstruct the pattern of change in marriage strategies in the history of societies speaking Indo-European languages, using cross-cultural data in the systematic and explicitly historical framework afforded by the phylogenetic comparative approach. The analysis provides evidence in support of Proto-Indo-European monogamy, and that this pattern may have extended back to Proto-Indo- Hittite. These reconstructions push the origin of monogamous marriage into prehistory, well beyond the earliest instances documented in the historical record; this, …

Iain Baxter& And N.E. Thing Co.: A Study In Pop-Inflected Conceptual Art, Dennis Durham

Theses and Dissertations

The Canadian artist IAIN BAXTER&, known before 2005 as Iain Baxter, created an innovative Conceptual Art practice in the mid-60s that continues to make important contributions even today. He has maintained a strong collaborative element in his art, as witnessed by his role in the short-lived group IT (1965) and N.E. THING CO. (1966-1978)--an actual incorporated company consisting of BAXTER& and his first wife, Ingrid Baxter as chief officers--and by the addition of an ampersand to his legal name in 2005 to signify the open-ended quality of his work that relies on viewers‘ contributions to help determine its meaning. This …

Autokinetics: A Group Intervention To Mitigate At-Risk Behaviors In Adolescents, Christine Abrahams Apr 2011

Autokinetics: A Group Intervention To Mitigate At-Risk Behaviors In Adolescents, Christine Abrahams

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores whether introducing autokinetics (self-movement) to at-risk sophomore and junior high school students would increase their self-concept, school connectedness, perception of their academic performance, and GPA. In this study, at-risk' students are defined as students who have possible drug and alcohol problems, come from single parent households, have social issues at school, and/or come from difficult family situations. The research was conducted in small groups of eight to ten students over a six-month period. The two experimental and two control groups were randomly selected. All four groups attended a forty-minute weekly group session while autokinesis was used only …

Transcriptome Analysis Of Lagenidium Giganteum, Jennifer L. Grant Apr 2011

Transcriptome Analysis Of Lagenidium Giganteum, Jennifer L. Grant

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Mosquitoes are carriers of numerous diseases for instance, malaria and west-Nile virus. Lagenidium giganteum is a parasitic organism during larval stage that infects and kills mosquitoes. In time, this could be proven to be useful in bioengineering to create an environmentally safe insecticide. Molecular research was performed in order to determine the imperative genes in Lagenidium giganteum that hinder the development in mosquito larvae. A culture of Lagenidium giganteum was used to extract RNA and initiate a transcriptome analysis. Large scale sequencing led to the annotation of 20,000 transcripts. PCR amplification was performed using a Qiagen PCR kit in order …

A Regression Study Of The Relation Between Rocks And Fish Assemblages, Kaitlyn Brucker Apr 2011

A Regression Study Of The Relation Between Rocks And Fish Assemblages, Kaitlyn Brucker

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The objective of this study is to see if the amount of rock in a given transect is related to the fish that inhabited the area. A regression analysis is conducted to find the relation between the two variables, rocks and fish. Besides finding the model, the analysis includes the confidence interval for the coefficient s, residual plots, predicted intervals of the number of fish for selected values of the amount of the rock, and identifying outliers and influential points by looking at various statistics, such as RESIDUAL, STUDENTIZED RESIDUALS, COVRATIO, and DFFITS.

Adhesion Of Transferrin To Tisifilcon A Contact Lenses, Darshan Solanki, Stephanie Brinon Apr 2011

Adhesion Of Transferrin To Tisifilcon A Contact Lenses, Darshan Solanki, Stephanie Brinon

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Tear proteins are known to deposit differently on contact lenses of different materials, causing lens wearer comfort to be compromised. We examined the adhesion of transferrin to contact lenses made of tisifilcon A, a rigid gas-permeable silicone hydrogel (FDA Group III). Lenses were incubated 2.0 mg/ml solutions of human holo-transferrin for 1, 2, 3, and 4 days, and protein adhesion was determined by bicinchoninic acid assay. Transferrin adhesion increased from day 0 to day 3 and then dropped after days 4 and 5. This pattern resembled transferrin adhesion to lenses made of polymacon (FDA Group I), alphafilcon (FDA Group …

Myh16 Masticatory Gene Mutation Correlates With The Evolution Of Human Morphological Cranial Capacity, Renee Michelle Potens Apr 2011

Myh16 Masticatory Gene Mutation Correlates With The Evolution Of Human Morphological Cranial Capacity, Renee Michelle Potens

Undergraduate Student Symposium

In the late Miocene, Homo sapiens encephalization accelerated simultaneously with an anatomic craniofacial transformation, associated with a shift towards a gracilization pattern of diet. Hansell H. Stedman has discovered a deleterious masticatory gene mutation responsible for jaw muscle development that is found in all modern human populations. This gene is functionally conserved in all non-human primates such as chimpanzees and extinct Hominidae species such as Australopithecus and Paranthropus, and is only found in its mutated, non-functional state in humans. The myosin heavy chain (MYH16) inactivation occurred after the divergence of the phylogenic lineages leading to humans and …

Mobile Operating Systems, Adenji Baker, Enrique Lifshitz Apr 2011

Mobile Operating Systems, Adenji Baker, Enrique Lifshitz

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Over the last decade, there has been a proliferation on mobile computers. Last year, more than 67 million smart phones were sold in the United States. Not all mobile computers are the same; these devices, have different hardware and operating systems. Each different mobile device and operating system has unique features and is targeted to a distinct demographic. For example, Blackberry devices are marketed as the business smartphone, on the other hand, the numerous amount of applications available for the iPhone make this device a favorite among the average youth.

Mobile operating systems are often compared by its features and …

The Influence Of Emotional Stimuli On Attention Sharing In A Dual Modality Erp Paradigm: Effects Of Varying Interstimulus Intervals, Amanda Lynch Apr 2011

The Influence Of Emotional Stimuli On Attention Sharing In A Dual Modality Erp Paradigm: Effects Of Varying Interstimulus Intervals, Amanda Lynch

Undergraduate Student Symposium

A large and growing body of evidence demonstrates that attention is preferentially allocated to stimuli with emotional content. Emotionally negative stimuli serve as a mechanism of biological preparedness to enhance attention. In agreement with this idea, previous studies looking at the influence of emotional pictures on tone processing showed that the ERP measures of cognition was reduced when participants were exposed to an emotional picture with intermittent auditory startle probes We hypothesized that if an auditory oddball (attention capturing) stimulus was placed in the same perceptual time frame as a preceding emotional picture, the auditory stimulus would then share attention …
