Open Access, African Scholarly Publishing, And Cultural Rights: An Exploratory Usage And Accessibility Study, Natalia Taylor Bowdoin May 2011

Open Access, African Scholarly Publishing, And Cultural Rights: An Exploratory Usage And Accessibility Study, Natalia Taylor Bowdoin

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The Open Access (OA) Movement has been praised by proponents as a way to reverse the unsustainability of traditional scholarly publishing economic models and to aid in the equalization of the flow of information between industrialized and less industrialized nations. The OA Movement is thus also seen as a means of helping achieve both Articles 19 and 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which jointly articulate the basic human rights to seek, receive and impart information, to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts, and to share in scientific advancement. Historically however, …

Determining Factors Contributing To Graduation For Students With Learning Disabilities In Community Colleges, Crystal Perry Ange

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study examined Students with Learning Disabilities (SLD) graduation rates from two-year community colleges. Specifically, the purpose of this paper was to determine if identifiable demographics or accommodations were related to SLD who graduated from community colleges. Data were collected from the records of SLD at four community colleges in North Carolina. The information collected included demographic data, the accommodations of SLD, and graduation status from community college. The results were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression. The overall study demonstrated no factors were identified that predict graduation for SLD from a two-year community college. Implications for future research include the …

A Cohesive Theology Of Christian Living: Principles From The Book Of Daniel, Jeremy Shaffer May 2011

A Cohesive Theology Of Christian Living: Principles From The Book Of Daniel, Jeremy Shaffer

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The propensity to force preconceived ideologies and theological systems upon the interpretation of the book of Daniel is evident. The purpose of this project is to provide a proper interpretation of Daniel 1-6 so that proper applications can be made for preaching and teaching, trying to eliminate any preconceptions along the way that are forced upon the text. A six-part theology of Christian living is developed from the preaching outlines of each chapter, all connected to the book's theme of sovereignty and thereby forming a cohesive unit. Ultimately, a greater appreciation for the value of the Old Testament in Christian …

Linear Dynamic Model For Continuous Speech Recognition, Tao Ma Apr 2011

Linear Dynamic Model For Continuous Speech Recognition, Tao Ma

Theses and Dissertations

In the past decades, statistics-based hidden Markov models (HMMs) have become the predominant approach to speech recognition. Under this framework, the speech signal is modeled as a piecewise stationary signal (typically over an interval of 10 milliseconds). Speech features are assumed to be temporally uncorrelated. While these simplifications have enabled tremendous advances in speech processing systems, for the past several years progress on the core statistical models has stagnated. Since machine performance still significantly lags human performance, especially in noisy environments, researchers have been looking beyond the traditional HMM approach. Recent theoretical and experimental studies suggest that exploiting frame-torame correlations …

Some Introductory Notes On The Development And Characteristics Of Sabah Malay, Tom G. Hoogervorst Apr 2011

Some Introductory Notes On The Development And Characteristics Of Sabah Malay, Tom G. Hoogervorst

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This is a preliminary description of the Malay variety used as a lingua franca in the Malaysian state of Sabah at the northernmost top of Borneo. The paper discusses a number of common linguistic features that distinguish Sabah Malay from other Malay varieties and analyses these features from a historical linguistic perspective. While it is argued that Sabah Malay has a close historical relation with other Malay dialects spoken in Borneo, especially Brunei Malay, the vernacular is also influenced phonologically and lexically by Sabah's indigenous and immigrant speech communities. Words and sentences recorded or elicited during fieldwork in various parts …

A Nonlinear Mixture Autoregressive Model For Speaker Verification, Sundararajan Srinivasan Apr 2011

A Nonlinear Mixture Autoregressive Model For Speaker Verification, Sundararajan Srinivasan

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, we apply a nonlinear mixture autoregressive (MixAR) model to supplant the Gaussian mixture model for speaker verification. MixAR is a statistical model that is a probabilistically weighted combination of components, each of which is an autoregressive filter in addition to a mean. The probabilistic mixing and the datadependent weights are responsible for the nonlinear nature of the model. Our experiments with synthetic as well as real speech data from standard speech corpora show that MixAR model outperforms GMM, especially under unseen noisy conditions. Moreover, MixAR did not require delta features and used 2.5x fewer parameters to achieve …

Asperger's Syndrome And Learning Strategies: Are Difficulties Due To A Production Deficit Or To A Utilization Deficit?, Miranda Lee Morris Apr 2011

Asperger's Syndrome And Learning Strategies: Are Difficulties Due To A Production Deficit Or To A Utilization Deficit?, Miranda Lee Morris

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated whether knowledge about memory strategies was impaired in a group of young adults with Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) as compared to a group of young adults without AS. Both groups participated in two tasks, one designed to examine the categorization strategy and one to examine the interactive imagery strategy. Participants with AS showed a production deficit because they were unable to spontaneously produce either strategy to benefit their memory performance. However, the group with AS did not show evidence of a utilization deficit; when they were trained on strategies, they were able to use them effectively both immediately …

Examining One Traditional Classroom And One Progressive Classroom For The At-Risk Middle School Student: A Case Study Of Two Rural Redesign Programs, Alvin Centrell Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact that the creation of programs or instructional strategies that were devised and designed solely for the purpose of improving academic achievement among at-risk students has on the at-risk middle school student. In this case study, educational success from school redesign programs was qualitatively measured based upon an oriental inquiry-based qualitative research design. The data obtained for this study were derived from interviews, observations, and archival documents. The data collected for this study were intended to address the following questions: (a) How do redesign programs support teachers? (b) How does the …

Crossing The Border; Historical And Linguistic Divides Among The Bunaq In Central Timor, Antoinette Schapper Apr 2011

Crossing The Border; Historical And Linguistic Divides Among The Bunaq In Central Timor, Antoinette Schapper

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Bunaq are a Papuan language-speaking people straddling the border of Indonesian West Timor and independent East Timor. This paper looks at the history of the Bunaq as a "border" people in Timor. "Border" is interpreted here in two ways, as referring to: (i) a political division, the boundary line separating one country from another, and (ii) a linguistic division, the distinguishing line between Papuan and Austronesian languages. I examine the effect that the Bunaq position at the political and linguistic borders of Timor has had on the people and their language.

Sailing The Archipelago In A Boat Of Rhymes; Pantun In The Malay World, Muhammad Haji Salleh Apr 2011

Sailing The Archipelago In A Boat Of Rhymes; Pantun In The Malay World, Muhammad Haji Salleh

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The extremely popular poetic form from Insular Southeast Asia, the pantun, travelled from its unknown source throughout the Malay Archipelago, first in Malay, then in the languages of Southeast Asia. In the ports and states where they were received, local colour, other idiosyncrasies, references, and linguistic characteristics have been added, and in fact, special forms with special names developed. This basic form is known, composed, and loved in at least 40 dialects of Malay, and 35 non-Malay languages, in the Peninsula and many of the islands of Malaysia and Indonesia. It spread through trade routes, ports, and also via diasporas …

Moving In A Hierarchized Landscape; Changing Border Regimes In Central Kalimantan, Dave Lumenta Apr 2011

Moving In A Hierarchized Landscape; Changing Border Regimes In Central Kalimantan, Dave Lumenta

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Transnational mobility is a common feature among borderland communities. Central Borneo has been a relatively fluid and open riverine-based socio-cultural and economic space since the arrival of colonial states, without much interference from the establishment of international boundaries on local cross-border mobility practices. This applies to the Kenyah, a cluster of related ethnic groups occupying the Apokayan plateau in East Kalimantan (Indonesia), who are historically an integral part of the socio-cultural and economic fabric throughout the major riverine systems of Sarawak (Malaysia). Despite the relative absence of states, Central Borneo has not escaped the onslaught of social differentiation embedded in …

Contested Meaning Of The Nation-State Through Historical Border Narratives; A Case Study Of The Batang Kanyau Iban, West Kalimantan, Iwan Meulia Pirous Apr 2011

Contested Meaning Of The Nation-State Through Historical Border Narratives; A Case Study Of The Batang Kanyau Iban, West Kalimantan, Iwan Meulia Pirous

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Nation as a cultural-psychological phenomenon is best understood in terms of how a sense of nationhood operates in order to construct social identities or a social imagination about the modern nation-state (Anderson 1983). The forging of nationalism as a national identity cannot be seen in isolation of the rise of modernization and industrialization (Gellner 1987). Although the nation appears to be a modern phenomenon, Smith (1991) stresses that every nation preserves its own past historical artefacts, narratives, and symbols for present-day needs. This model needs to be elaborated further as it is insufficient to understand how a sense of nationhood …

Descriptive statistics and comparative analysis were used to analyze responses to the 24-item survey. Results showed there were statistically …

The Courage To Critique Policies And Practices From Within: Youth Participatory Action Research As Critical Policy Analysis. A Response To “Buscando La Libertad: Latino Youths In Search Of Freedom In School”, Anjale Welton Apr 2011

The Courage To Critique Policies And Practices From Within: Youth Participatory Action Research As Critical Policy Analysis. A Response To “Buscando La Libertad: Latino Youths In Search Of Freedom In School”, Anjale Welton

Democracy & Education

This response to “Buscando la Libertad: Latino Youths in Search of Freedom in School” by Jason G. Irizarry demonstrates how youth participatory action research (YPAR) as an instrument of subverting oppressive school policies and structures is a form of critical policy analysis (CPA). As an evolving method, CPA acknowledges the absent voices in policy, questions policy inequities, fosters empowerment, and influences policy. Youths who engage in YPAR, as demonstrated by Project FUERTE, have the courage to critique school policies that have the power to alter their educational trajectories, which offers more hope for change than scholarly elites who critique policies …

Class, Race, And The Discourse Of “College For All.” A Response To “Schooling For Democracy”, Ronald David Glass, Kysa Nygreen Apr 2011

Class, Race, And The Discourse Of “College For All.” A Response To “Schooling For Democracy”, Ronald David Glass, Kysa Nygreen

Democracy & Education

We critique the “college for all” discourse by unveiling its relationship to the politics of education, the broader economic and political contexts, and the class and race structures embedded in society and schooling, including higher education. We analyze the current and future labor markets to demonstrate the ways that the “college for all” discourse overstates the need for math and science knowledge and skills within the workforce, and we analyze the debt burdens associated with college attendance and completion to demonstrate that the promised benefits of “college for all” are often illusory for low-income, racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse students. …

Buscando La Libertad: Latino Youths In Search Of Freedom In School, Jason Irizarry Apr 2011

Buscando La Libertad: Latino Youths In Search Of Freedom In School, Jason Irizarry

Democracy & Education

Drawing from a two-year ethnographic study of Latino high school students engaged in youth participatory action research (YPAR), this article describes students’ quest for freedom in schools, locating their struggle within a larger effort to realize the democratic ideals of public schooling. Using Latino/a Critical Race Theory as a theoretical lens, the author demonstrates how popular discourse around the “achievement gap” often obscures the oppressive policies and practices implemented by educators that limit freedoms necessary for educational and personal development and profoundly influence the identities and life trajectories of Latino youth. The article concludes with an exploration of YPAR as …

Schooling For Democracy, Nel Noddings Apr 2011

Schooling For Democracy, Nel Noddings

Democracy & Education

There is a widespread movement today to prepare all students for college, and it is promoted in the name of democracy. I argue here that such a move actually puts our democracy at risk by forcing students into programs that do not interest them and depriving them of courses at which they might succeed. We risk losing the vision of democracy that respects every form of honest work and cultivates a deep appreciation of interdependence.

Discovering And Understanding “Sabbath Rest” In Hebrews 3:7-4:11, Peter Battaglia Apr 2011

Discovering And Understanding “Sabbath Rest” In Hebrews 3:7-4:11, Peter Battaglia

Senior Honors Theses

The book of Hebrews is a complex and intricate book full of Old Testament references.  Intertextuality, or the New Testament’s use of the Old Testament, plays an important role in Hebrews, specifically in the context of 3:7-4:11.  In this passage there occurs a phrase unique to the whole Bible, “Sabbath rest” (4:9).  While this phrase seems to point to some sort of eschatological reality, there are numerous factors which play a role in determining what this “Sabbath rest” actually is.  In order to come to a proper understanding of the meaning and significance of this phrase, an analysis of the …

Sociolinguistics Barriers: Constructing And Reproducing Temporary Migrants' Social Inequalities, Maria Eugenia De Luna Villalón Apr 2011

Sociolinguistics Barriers: Constructing And Reproducing Temporary Migrants' Social Inequalities, Maria Eugenia De Luna Villalón

Western Migration Conference Series

This study explores the sociolinguistic barriers that Mexican Agricultural Temporary Workers (MATW) experience during their temporary stays in Canada. Following an ethnographic approach, some of the findings were that the sociolinguistic barriers lead to sociolinguistic dependency, increasing and perpetuating human and social inequalities of the MATW.
