Barriers To Women's Access To Justice In Haiti, Meena Jagannath

While gender-based violence is not a new phenomenon in Haiti, the aftermath of the January 12, 2010 earthquake further exposed the vulnerability of Haitian women and girls to gender-based violence and the limited possibilities for women to evince a judicial response to gender-specific violations of the law. Drawing from the experiences of Haitian lawyers and women’s rights advocates, this paper will examine women’s barriers to accessing justice in Haiti by drawing on actual examples of gender-based violence at each step of the investigatory process under the Haitian justice system. This volume focuses on the special role that Jews played in reshaping the racial landscape of southern California in the twentieth century. Rather than considering this issue in terms of broad analyses of organizations or communities, each contribution instead approaches it by examining the activity of a single Jewish individual, and how he or she navigated the social terrain of a changing southern California. In 1965, Congress enacted the Older Americans Act, establishing a federal agency and state agencies to address the social services needs of the aging population. The mission of the Older Americans Act is broad: to help older people maintain maximum independence in their homes and communities and to promote a continuum of care for the vulnerable elderly. In successive amendments, the Act created area agencies on aging and a host of social support programs. The "aging services network," broadly described, refers to the agencies, programs, and activities that are sponsored by the Older Americans Act. The Act’s funding for services …

The pervasive culture of underage and excessive drinking on college campuses has led to numerous federal and state regulatory efforts to reduce drinking rates among college students. One such policy has been to restrict alcohol advertisements in college student publications, which implicates the First Amendment by limiting access to lawful commercial speech. Although the Supreme Court has developed a four-part balancing test to determine the validity of commercial speech restrictions, the Court has not articulated the level of proof required for assessing the validity of restrictions on alcohol advertisements in college student publications. Several actions by Congress and the IRS aimed to reduce improper claims of the earned income tax credit by increasing preparer penalties and due diligence procedures. * Litigation over restricted stock-based compensation focused on the proper date of the stock's market valuation and the effect of company and SEC restrictions on disposition of the stock. * The Tax Court applied the IRS's recent practice of allowing professional gamblers to deduct ordinary and reasonable nonwagering business expenses over their gambling winnings, overturning a 1951 case holding. * The Tax Court also held that limited partners of a limited partnership who perform …
