Can Havruta Style Learning Be A Best Practice In Law School?, Barbara P. Blumenfeld Jan 2011

Can Havruta Style Learning Be A Best Practice In Law School?, Barbara P. Blumenfeld

Faculty Scholarship

Havruta is a traditional Jewish method that seems compatible with legal education because of its focus on process, and so adaptable to law school training in legal reasoning, and because it is based upon dispute and resolution, another aspect that corresponds with the study of law. A unique form of collaborative student centered learning involving pairs of students, this article considers the application of Havruta to the law school setting and whether it should be incorporated into the law school curriculum.

Comprehensive Treatment Of Women With Postpartum Psychosis Across Health Care Systems From Swedish Psychiatrists' Perspectives, Inger Engqvist, Arne Åhlin, Ginette Ferszt, Kerstin Nilsson Jan 2011

Comprehensive Treatment Of Women With Postpartum Psychosis Across Health Care Systems From Swedish Psychiatrists' Perspectives, Inger Engqvist, Arne Åhlin, Ginette Ferszt, Kerstin Nilsson

The Qualitative Report

Studies concerning the psychiatrist's experiences of treating women with postpartum psychosis (PPP) or how they react to these women are limited in the literature. In this study a qualitative design is used. Data collection includes semi-structured interviews with nine Swedish psychiatrists working in psychiatric hospitals. The audio-taped interviews are transcribed verbatim and analyzed using content analysis. The findings consist of the categories: Protection, Treatment, Care, and Reactions. The psychiatrists describe emotions such as compassion, empathy and distress. A conclusion is that the psychiatrists focus on protecting the women from suicide and/or infanticide. Given the degree of stress the psychiatrists can …

Interviewing The Investigator: Strategies For Addressing Instrumentation And Researcher Bias Concerns In Qualitative Research, Ronald J. Chenail Jan 2011

Interviewing The Investigator: Strategies For Addressing Instrumentation And Researcher Bias Concerns In Qualitative Research, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

Instrumentation rigor and bias management are major challenges for qualitative researchers employing interviewing as a data generation method in their studies. A usual procedure for testing the quality of an interview protocol and for identifying potential researcher biases is the pilot study in which investigators try out their proposed methods to see if the planned procedures perform as envisioned by the researcher. Sometimes piloting is not practical or possible so an "interviewing the investigator" technique can serve as a useful first step to create interview protocols that help to generate the information proposed and to assess potential researcher biases especially …

Reports & Documents

Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a set of procedures, methods and tools that estimate the effects of a policy, program or project on the health of a population. Ideally an HIA is conducted before the policy, program or project is implemented so that findings and recommendations can influence decision-making. An HIA can take a variety of different forms ranging from a “rapid” HIA that is written based on existing data and published literature to an HIA that could require months to complete and where local data is collected and analyzed to inform recommendations. The result of an HIA is evidence-based …

Aggressive Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma Presenting As Schwanoma : A Case Report, Mohammad Sohail Awan, Montasir Junaid, Zain A. Sobani Jan 2011

Aggressive Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma Presenting As Schwanoma : A Case Report, Mohammad Sohail Awan, Montasir Junaid, Zain A. Sobani

Department of Radiology

Rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) are thought to arise from pluripotent muscle cell precursors intended to form the bodyís future striated muscle. Due to the wide distribution of striated muscle across the body these tumors may appear anywhere and cause symptoms accordingly. Presenting symptoms are highly variable and based on the tumor size and location making clinical diagnosis difficult. The diagnosis of RMS is based on histological examination; however they express varying cytologic pictures representing the different stages of rhabdomyoblasts and their development into skeletal muscle presenting pictures from highly to poorly differentiated neoplasms. Therefore their histological diagnosis also requires the use of …

Quo Vadis? Public Colleges And Their Funding, Andres C. Salazar Jan 2011

Quo Vadis? Public Colleges And Their Funding, Andres C. Salazar

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper reviews the current debate about the motivation, adequacy and distribution of funding for public colleges. Although the debate has been ongoing for some time, it has become especially heated in recent years due to serious budget problems in many states. In addition, the paper outlines significant trends in higher education which appear to be a reaction to the increasing tuition costs, demographic changes and expectations of employment from a college education. It is expected that the trends in distance education growth, part-time attendance, competition from for-profit colleges, lower subsidy from the state, stagnant population, the lack of college-ready …

Education And Economy: The Impact Of Investment In Human Capital Through Education On Unemployment, Zafer Pirim

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

The impact of investment in human capital on economy has always been discussed in the literature. Existing studies in the literature generally focus on short term impacts of investment in human capital. While some studies see significant impact, some other ones see little or no impact. This study manipulated data that was cover a long span of time, a 25-year period. In this study the researcher inquired whether there is a significant correlation between education and economy in terms of the impacts of investment in human capital on unemployment over a long span of time. In this empirical study panel …

Vitamin D Deficiency And Sun Avoidance Among University Students At Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Fatme Al Anouti, Justin Thomas, Laila Abdel-Wareth, Jaishen Rajah, William B. Grant, Afrozul Haq Jan 2011

Vitamin D Deficiency And Sun Avoidance Among University Students At Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Fatme Al Anouti, Justin Thomas, Laila Abdel-Wareth, Jaishen Rajah, William B. Grant, Afrozul Haq

All Works

This study offers evidence that vitamin D deficiency could be a major public health burden among young Emirati adults, mostly because of sun deprivation in a sun-blessed country. This study included a random sample of 138 females and 70 males tested for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] status. To further evaluate the predictors of vitamin D status in this population, the study examined diet, obesity and sun exposure. In summer, the mean serum 25(OH)D concentration for females was 20.9 ± 14.9 nmol/L, whereas that for males was 27.3 ± 15.7 nmol/L. Females scored significantly higher than males on the sun avoidance …
