This study investigates the educational history of the Mercedes Independent School District of deep south Texas during the twentieth century with a focus on the opportunities and challenges encountered by Mexican American schoolchildren who were served by the district. The methodology selected is qualitative research wherein the researcher is the primary instrument collecting the experiences of participants with direct or indirect knowledge of the school district. Also examined are archival documents such as high school yearbooks, graduate pictures, school board minutes, maps, and newspaper articles. The demographics of the school district have changed from an all-Anglo school district at its …

Cistronic Stop Signal Ratio Of Mitochondrial Genes Suggests Multiple Waves Of Human Migrations In And Out Of Africa, Naby Yaya Sankhon Jul 2011

Cistronic Stop Signal Ratio Of Mitochondrial Genes Suggests Multiple Waves Of Human Migrations In And Out Of Africa, Naby Yaya Sankhon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The mitochondrial Cistronic Stop Signal Ratios (CSSR) is defined as a series of 12 numerals representing the ratio of TAA, TAG, AGG, and AGA nucleotide trimmers. Primate mitochondria use these nucleotide trimmers as stop codons and many of these trimmers are also found on the 2nd and 3rd reading frames of a cistron. We showed that the average value of the CSSR of all the 13 protein coding genes in mitochondria (genomic CSSR) could be used to define the phylogenetic relationship between the primates. However, the genic CSSR of most human mitochondria are essentially identical, except for the CSSR of …

Economic Competition, Sustainability, And Survival Endurance: The Extinction Of The Dodo, The Easter Island Case, And The Tragedy Of The Commons Effect, Pedro Moreira

Higher Learning Research Communications

A fast developing industry worldwide, tourism demands a monumental extent of resources, and at times devastates and condemns the very own environments that are fundamental to the economic survival of organizations and the sustainability of travel destinations. The purpose of the study is to link three established scientific themes on survival and sustainability to empirical results in the field of economic decision and behavior. The discussion of this link may also represent the originality value of the paper. Departing from the results of a series of decision games obtained under a quasi-experimental design, behavioral patterns were analyzed and extrapolated to …

Presettlement Forest Composition In The Connecticut Tract Of Western New York, Evelyn Brister Jul 2011

Presettlement Forest Composition In The Connecticut Tract Of Western New York, Evelyn Brister

Theses

This study of the vegetation of the 100,000-acre Connecticut Tract in western New York examines the presettlement characteristics of the forest, including the tree species composition, tree density, and wetland extent. Presettlement vegetation studies add to what is known about the forests of this region before European settlement in the early 1800s brought widespread changes to these forests. The ecological data in original private land surveys from 1811 were transcribed and then analyzed using ArcGIS and IDRISI GIS software. The surveys contained both witness tree data and line descriptions, which were analyzed for species composition and community type and were …

Knowledge And Thought In Heidegger And Foucault: Towards An Epistemology Of Ruptures, Arun Anantheeswaran Iyer Jul 2011

Knowledge And Thought In Heidegger And Foucault: Towards An Epistemology Of Ruptures, Arun Anantheeswaran Iyer

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation shows how Martin Heidegger and Michel Foucault, by questioning the very understanding of the subject-object relationship on which all epistemology is grounded, challenge two of its most cherished beliefs: 1. Thought and knowledge are essentially activities on the part of the subject understood anthropologically or transcendentally. 2. The history of knowledge exhibits teleological progress towards a better and more comprehensive account of its objects. In contrast to traditional epistemology, both Heidegger and Foucault show how thought and knowledge are not just acts, which can be attributed to the subject but also events which elude any such subjective characterization. …

Perceptions Of Effectiveness Of Alternatively And Traditionally Licensed Teachers, Kristi L. Kilby Goodwin Jul 2011

Perceptions Of Effectiveness Of Alternatively And Traditionally Licensed Teachers, Kristi L. Kilby Goodwin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This qualitative phenomenological study examined the perceptions of both traditionally and alternatively licensed teachers regarding the effectiveness of their teacher preparation program on creating effective classroom teachers. Sixteen teachers at three Northeast Georgia schools participated in a series of semi-structured interviews over a period of five months. The teachers described perceptions of their teacher preparation route and corresponding effectiveness in the classroom. In addition to the interviews the teachers were asked to complete the Teachers Sense of Efficacy Scale in order to establish a quantitative view of self-efficacy among study participants. The interviews revealed that the most important qualities possessed …

Public Entrenchment Through Private Law: Binding Local Governments, Christopher Serkin Jul 2011

Public Entrenchment Through Private Law: Binding Local Governments, Christopher Serkin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Anti-entrenchment rules prevent governments from passing unrepealable legislation and ensure that subsequent governments are free to revisit the policy choices of the past. However, governments — and local governments in particular — have become increasingly adept at using private law mechanisms like contracts and property conveyances to make binding precommitments into the future. Simultaneously, courts and state legislatures in recent years have reduced the availability of core de-entrenching tools, like eminent domain, that have traditionally allowed governments to recapture policymaking authority from the past. These changes threaten to shift democratic power intertemporally. This Article develops a typology of mechanisms for …

What The Progressives Had In Common, Glen Gendzel Jul 2011

What The Progressives Had In Common, Glen Gendzel

Faculty Publications, History

When Professor Benjamin Parke De Witt of New York University sat down to write the first history of the progressive movement in 1915, he promised “to give form and definiteness to a movement which is, in the minds of many, confused and chaotic.” Apparently it was a fool's errand, because confusion and chaos continued to plague historians of early twentieth-century reform long after Professor De Witt laid his pen to rest. The maddening variety of reform and reformers in the early twentieth century has perpetually confounded historians' efforts to identify what, if anything, the progressives had in common. Back in …

The First Liability Insurance Cartel In America, 1896-1906, Sachin S. Pandya Jun 2011

The First Liability Insurance Cartel In America, 1896-1906, Sachin S. Pandya

Faculty Articles and Papers

This article studies the rise and fall of the first liability insurance cartel in the United States. In 1886, insurance companies in America began selling liability insurance for personal injury accidents, primarily to cover business tort liability for employee accidents at work and non-employee injuries occasioned by their business operations. In 1896, the leading liability insurers agreed to fix premium rates and share information on policyholder losses. In 1906, this cartel fell apart. Although largely forgotten until now, the rise and fall of this cartel confirms the expectations of both cartel theory and past studies of insurance cartels, largely in …

Female Agency And The Sacramental Vision Of Early Modern Catholicism, Kathleen A. Wesolek Jun 2011

Female Agency And The Sacramental Vision Of Early Modern Catholicism, Kathleen A. Wesolek

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

While more and more attention is given to the writing and concerns of English women in the early modern period, one specific group has been overlooked, English Catholic women who became religious sisters in convents on the Continent. These women produced writings detailing their lives, community, and sense of self which are bound up in the larger theological and social debates of the time. In turn, these women were inserted within the larger sacramental vision of early modern Catholicism. This particular vision sustained that marriage and vowed chastity were two valid Christian lifestyles, the latter giving women an opportunity for …

"The Music Is Nothing If The Audience Is Deaf": Moving Historical Thinking Into The Wider World, Linda K. Salvucci Jun 2011

"The Music Is Nothing If The Audience Is Deaf": Moving Historical Thinking Into The Wider World, Linda K. Salvucci

History Faculty Research

Readers of Historically Speaking are certainly no strangers to practicing and reflecting upon “historical thinking”; witness the 2008 publication of several essays and interviews in the Historians in Conversation series, as well as explicit or implicit references to its nature and process in virtually all recent issues. Still, most academic historians, scholars, and authors of popular works of history rarely connect with what goes on in terms of historical thinking in K 12 classrooms in more than a casual usually parental way. To be sure, ongoing controversies such as those involving the Texas social studies standards, the role assigned to …

A Case Of Reclaming Ruin: Beyond The Hype & Hyperbole Of New York's High Line, Bryan D. Eck

Master's Theses

As a result of economic, social, and cultural changes, cities across the country are looking to outdated and abandoned infrastructure for use as public space. The primary objective of this study is to comprehensively examine one such project, the High Line in New York City, to contribute to the body of literature related to urban transformation, reuse, and analogous projects. In this thesis, the High Line was analyzed as a case study and examined in-depth, through an array of data gathering methods. A historical study of the site was conducted through archival research. A typology, and subsequent description, of the …

An Exploration Of Rpl (Recognition Of Prior Learning) In Companies And Organisations In Ireland Valorisation, Return On Investment, And Emerging Trends, Katherine Collins

Doctoral

This thesis explored the topic of recognition of prior learning (RPL) in companies and organisations in Ireland against a backdrop of global, European, and national policy initiatives on the recognition of all forms of formal, non-formal and informal learning. The immediate context was coloured by shifts in employment, in labour markets, and in education and training policies because of increasing economic difficulties globally, and the greater levels of attention being paid to the role of education and training in the economic and social development of a country. The primary research question for the thesis was: Is there a return on …

Giving My Heart A Voice: Reflection On Self And Others Through The Looking Glass Of Pedagogy: An Autoetnography, Vera L. Neyman

Dissertations

To improve students academic outcomes this auto-ethnographic dissertation examines my teaching practice in the Ukraine and in the United States, and the similarities and differences between the two educational systems. This study, designed in the form of auto-ethnographic vignettes, explores the effect of my personal and professional metamorphosis on the academic advancement of my students, and investigates the conditions that molded me into a teacher I am today. Through the reflections on the process of self-development as an individual and a teacher, I discovered that building the relationship of trust between school and family is an underlying condition for improving …

U.S. Immigration Law: Children As A Unifying Means To Immigration Reform, Sarah J. Flagel Jun 2011

U.S. Immigration Law: Children As A Unifying Means To Immigration Reform, Sarah J. Flagel

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This thesis seeks to evaluate U.S. immigration law and policy in light of their observable impact on children.  My purpose is to review and assess the efficacy of current family reunification law specifically as regards minors:  its clarity or ambiguity, consistency in application, and its effects on respect for the rule of law and just consequences.  Section one addresses normative dimensions of justice including the legal notion that a punishment meted out should be proportionate to the crime of the perpetrator, the idea of consistency as a necessary though insufficient aspect of justice, and the importance of understanding the complexities …

Haiti's Troubles: Perspectives From The Theology Of Work And From Liberation Theology, Lys Stéphane Florival May 2011

Haiti's Troubles: Perspectives From The Theology Of Work And From Liberation Theology, Lys Stéphane Florival

Dissertations (2 year embargo)

This dissertation examines "signs of the times" in contemporary Haiti, concentrating on the harsh realities of work and workers in the context of entrenched poverty and ecological devastation. It seeks to formulate a Christian theological-ethical framework that will empower movements of both the Church and Haitian society to engage the problems of the degradation of work and exploitation of workers. This investigation adopts the critical method of correlation using insights from certain modern theologies of work (Chenu, John Paul II, and Miroslav Volf) and from liberation theology (Gutiérrez, Godefroy Midy, and J-B Aristide) to analyze key features of the realities …

Helen Turner: Representations Of Women, Samantha Nicole Smith May 2011

Helen Turner: Representations Of Women, Samantha Nicole Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis investigates Helen Turner’s representations of women in gardens and domestic interiors, specifically by comparing and contrasting her paintings with those of Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, and Lilly Martin Spencer. I use five of Turner’s paintings to explore her representations of gender, the male gaze, and domesticity through a feminist model. I begin with a biography of Turner’s life and an introduction to those five paintings highlighted in this thesis. This is followed by an investigation of how the concept of gender in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century America affected the manner Turner chose to portray …

Border State, Divided Loyalties: The Politics Of Ellen Wallace, Kentucky Slave Owner, During The Civil War, Amber C. Nicholson May 2011

Border State, Divided Loyalties: The Politics Of Ellen Wallace, Kentucky Slave Owner, During The Civil War, Amber C. Nicholson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the diary of Ellen Wallace, a woman who lived in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, during the American Civil War. A diligent diarist, Ellen recorded not only the workings of her farm and household, but also her interactions with slaves, her worries about secession, and her shifting views on President Lincoln, emancipation and the war itself. At the start of the war, Ellen was a staunch Unionist. By war's end, she was a Confederate. This thesis will examine the factors that contributed to Ellen's changing political ideals and how she sought to reconcile her opposing beliefs. Ellen occupied a role …

Remolding Mexican Identity: The Wax Art Of Francisco Vargas In 19th Century New Orleans, John Mangipano May 2011

Remolding Mexican Identity: The Wax Art Of Francisco Vargas In 19th Century New Orleans, John Mangipano

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In December of 1915, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported on the death of the patriarch of four generations of Mexican wax figure artists whose artworks demonstrated a century of change in the city of New Orleans. The family's artworks included religious sculptures, representations of indigenous and peasant populations of Mexico, and the merchant populations of the French Quarter. Francisco's artworks represented Louisiana's agriculture at two World's Fairs in New Orleans and Buffalo. Francisco received a contract from Mississippi Commissioner R. H. Henry to produce the 30-foot King Cotton for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase International Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri. Though …

The Virginia Iron, Coal, And Coke Company And The Growth And Decline Of Southern Appalachia’S Iron Industry: 1880-1930., Patrick Dalton Dickerson May 2011

The Virginia Iron, Coal, And Coke Company And The Growth And Decline Of Southern Appalachia’S Iron Industry: 1880-1930., Patrick Dalton Dickerson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

During the late nineteenth century, the penetration of industrial capitalism into southern Appalachia fundamentally altered the region’s economy. Historians have thoroughly studied this period’s coal and timber industries, but little scholarly attention has been paid to the iron industry. Iron production also made great strides in both output and scale as railroads and mining increased demand for iron products. The growth of Birmingham’s iron and steel industry has dominated the studies of iron that have been done, but between the 1880s and 1920s the iron industry of southwest Virginia and east Tennessee also were thoroughly modernized. The consolidation of the …

The Supreme Brother-In-Law: Ramón Serrano Suñer And Spanish Fascism During The Franco Regime, Brian David Hill May 2011

The Supreme Brother-In-Law: Ramón Serrano Suñer And Spanish Fascism During The Franco Regime, Brian David Hill

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This study focuses on the political career of Ramón Serrano Suñer, a Spanish politician whose career lasted from 1933 until 1942. Particularly, it addresses several pertinent questions about Serrano’s career and the larger Franco government, including the extent to which it was truly authoritarian and the real strength of authentic fascism in post-Civil War Spain. From 1937-1941, Serrano was the second only to his brother-in-law, the dictator Francisco Franco, in terms of political prominence. Serrano used his personal connections with Franco and José Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of the fascist Falange party, to vault himself from wartime refugee to …
