Sacrifice In The Name Of Sacred Duty : The Representations Of The Decembrist Wives In Russian Culture, 1825--Present, Anna Viktorovna Biel
Sacrifice In The Name Of Sacred Duty : The Representations Of The Decembrist Wives In Russian Culture, 1825--Present, Anna Viktorovna Biel
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation explores the mythologized collective image of the Decembrist wives, eleven noblewomen who voluntarily followed to Siberian exile their officer husbands after the latter's failed revolt against Emperor Nicholas I on December 14, 1825. Exploring the multiplicity of the Decembrist wives' representations and self-representations that have emerged in Russian culture since 1825, this study reveals the complexity and constructed nature of these women's historical image that places almost exclusive emphasis on their role as wives to portray them as epitomes of self-sacrificial wifely love and loyalty and an embodiment of ideal Russian femininity. Through the examination of the unpublished …
Virtual Restoration Of Fragmented Glass Plate Photographs Of Archaeological Repertoires, Filippo Stanco, Davide Tanasi, G. Gallo
Virtual Restoration Of Fragmented Glass Plate Photographs Of Archaeological Repertoires, Filippo Stanco, Davide Tanasi, G. Gallo
History Faculty Publications
This paper describes a virtual restoration pipeline for the broken glass plates in the fund of the Department of Archaeological, Philological and Historical Studies of Catania University. This archive includes rare images of the excavation activities of the Department in Sicily and Greece. Several of the plates are damaged and fractured and require virtual realignment and restoration. We adapted to this case a restoration algorithm based on the use of image processing techniques. The algorithm enhance the quality of scanned images, and subsequently performs a rigid registration and realignment of the fragments. A final application of inpainting techniques fills the …
Culture Wars – A Battle For Freedom Of Expression In Contemporary Art, Judy Bullington
Culture Wars – A Battle For Freedom Of Expression In Contemporary Art, Judy Bullington
Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal
Art in the 1990s aggressively dealt with sensitive issues about identity and the social order, particularly in regards to race, gender, class, religion, sexual orientation, poverty, and AIDS. The ensuing confrontation in the United States between artists who championed their right to freedom of speech and officials involved in the management of public funds is referred to as the Culture Wars. This proved to be a defining moment in the history of the visual arts. Events associated with the Culture Wars not only ‘liberated’ art from many of its longstanding traditions, they also insisted that artists’ should be absolutely free …
The Swinney Conservatory Of Music At Central Methodist University: An Historical Study, David William Samson
The Swinney Conservatory Of Music At Central Methodist University: An Historical Study, David William Samson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Swinney Conservatory of Music at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri has a long history of producing a significant number of the music educators. Even before the conservatory's founding in 1925, music and music education played an important role in the town of Fayette. Since the mid-nineteenth century there were two colleges in Fayette: Central College and Howard Female College. While both schools grew alongside each other, it was at Howard College (later renamed Howard-Payne College) where music was taught. When the two schools merged in 1923, Howard-Payne's music department was transferred to Central and in 1925 was reorganized …
Single Chain Mhc Trimer-Based Dna Vaccines For Pathogen Protection, Sojung Kim
Single Chain Mhc Trimer-Based Dna Vaccines For Pathogen Protection, Sojung Kim
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
CD8+ T cells play a major role in controlling infection and disease progression in many infectious diseases. Upon infection, antigen-specific CD8+ T cells are generated and mainly through their cytotoxic activity remove infected cells, therefore, pathogens. Ongoing research has identified antigenic epitopes in a vast number of pathogens and, using the identified epitopes, the induction of CD8+ T cell immune responses has been an important strategy for successful vaccines. However, most immunization approaches with class I binding peptides have failed to induce CD8+ T cell responses strong enough to prevent disease. This failure has been attributed to the lack of …
National History And The Novel In 1930s Britain, Erica Delsandro
National History And The Novel In 1930s Britain, Erica Delsandro
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Although indebted to scholars whose work has illuminated the distinctiveness of 1930s Britain, "National History and the Novel in 1930s Britain" argues that rather than seeking distinction, writers of the period were more concerned with the task of contextualizing their decade and their own position within a national historiography from which they felt the Great War and military masculinities had excluded them. Focusing on the novelists Christopher Isherwood, Evelyn Waugh, and Virginia Woolf, and the philosopher of history, R. G. Collingwood, I describe how the 1930s inheritors of British cultural privilege found themselves symbolically disenfranchised from a national identity inextricably …
The History Of Technical Communication Instruction At Missouri University Of Science And Technology: The Evolution Of A Curriculum, Elizabeth Marie Roberson
The History Of Technical Communication Instruction At Missouri University Of Science And Technology: The Evolution Of A Curriculum, Elizabeth Marie Roberson
Masters Theses
"This thesis provides a written record of the history of technical communication instruction at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). Beginning with the school's inception in 1871 as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (MSM) through to the year 2005, I have examined course catalogs and department files and conducted interviews to provide an overview of the evolution of technical communication instruction at this institution. To better understand this evolution, I have also provided a framework for the development of the English department from a single course in 1871 to the current Department of English and Technical …
The Liturgical Theology Of Aidan Kavanagh, Osb: Synthesis And Critique, Michelle Gilgannon
The Liturgical Theology Of Aidan Kavanagh, Osb: Synthesis And Critique, Michelle Gilgannon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the liturgical theology of the late Aidan Kavanagh, OSB. His particular approach to liturgy helped to shape the implementation of the liturgical changes instituted by the Second Vatican Council. His early published works were instrumental in explaining the goals of these liturgical changes, while his later works offered a not-so-subtle critique of how the changes had begun to impact the American Church. Fr. Kavanagh based the importance of liturgy on several unique and potentially controversial subjects. To Fr. Kavanagh, liturgical theology is theologia prima and the foundation of all other secondary theology. Participation in the liturgy and …
Measuring Prosocial Behavior Through The Implementation Of A Violence Prevention Intervention, Erin Lindsey Martin
Measuring Prosocial Behavior Through The Implementation Of A Violence Prevention Intervention, Erin Lindsey Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Childhood aggression is the best-known behavioral predictor of future social adjustment difficulties. Children with early onset aggression are likely to engage in aggressive behavior throughout the life course (Hester, Baltodano, Gable, & Tonelson, 2003). Early aggressive behavior is also strongly associated with later criminal behavior and deviant peer relations, poor school achievement, school dropout, and unemployment (Haemaelaeinen & Pulkinnen, 1996; Hay & Pawlby, 2003; Kokko, Tremblay, Lacourse, Nagin, & Vitaro, 2006; Scourfield, John, Martin, & McGuffin, 2004). Recently, researchers have focused on determining the positive behaviors that could potentially stop aggressive situations from progressing. These helping behaviors are defined broadly …
Teachers' Knowledge And Misconceptions Of Postconcussion Symptoms, Erika Leigh Beckman Mccoy
Teachers' Knowledge And Misconceptions Of Postconcussion Symptoms, Erika Leigh Beckman Mccoy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Concussion, or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI), is defined as a consequence of a physical trauma to the head followed by some disruption of brain function (Parker, 2001). The highest risk age groups for concussion are children up to the age of 5 years and adolescents from 15 years to 19 years of age (CDC, 2010). A constellation of symptoms, dubbed Postconcussion Syndrome (PCS), have been found to be commonly experienced after an individual has suffered a concussion, which consists of cognitive symptoms, affective symptoms, and somatic symptoms that adversely affect the individual's functioning (McAllister & Arciniegas, 2002; Ryan & …
Private Reader, Public Redactor: Narrative Strategies Of The Nineteenth-Century Female Revisionist, Amy Criniti Phillips
Private Reader, Public Redactor: Narrative Strategies Of The Nineteenth-Century Female Revisionist, Amy Criniti Phillips
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the vital role of the private female reading experience in the creation of the mid-Victorian British woman writer's authorial persona. In particular, I examine the role of the female redactor, a woman writer who revises a particular text, genre, or convention within a patriarchal literary tradition. The public and private contexts of the female redactor become imperative to the text that she creates, for the final narrative product is not only a public revision but also a series of private, gendered negotiations that define the woman writer and determine her contribution to female authorship.

Homosexuality And The Formation Of Conscience: An Examination Of Traditional Catholic Anthropological, Theological, And Ethical Evaluations In Light Of Contemporary Moral Markers, John Slovikovski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The question of homosexuality remains a daunting task to be addressed by the Church as well as theological ethicists. Lively, and often biased opinions have been presented in the last two centuries; however, use of traditional sources, such a Scripture, Natural Law, empirical data, and Tradition result in a doubt of fact, which, according to the established tradition of the Catholicism, requires the Church to follow the safest course of action, i.e., upholding the traditional heterosexual norm. Given that some individuals experience an irreversible homosexual orientation coupled by a lack of a vocation to a celibate lifestyle, which in turn …

Russia & Legal Harmonization: An Historical Inquiry Into Ip Reform As Global Convergence And Resistance, Boris N. Mamlyuk
Russia & Legal Harmonization: An Historical Inquiry Into Ip Reform As Global Convergence And Resistance, Boris N. Mamlyuk
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
This Article examines several waves of intellectual property (IP) regulation reform in Russia, starting with an examination into early Soviet attempts to regulate intellectual property. Historical analysis is useful to illustrate areas of theoretical convergence, divergence, and tension between state ideology, positive law, and "law in action." The relevance of these tensions for post-Soviet legal reform may appear tenuous. However, insofar as IP enforcement has emerged as one of the largest hurdles for Russia's prolonged accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), these historical precedents may help explain Russia's apparent theoretical and political disconnect from the WTO. If Russian policymakers …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this historical research was to identify and describe distinct conversational circles developing in separate and overlapping decision-making communities during the implementation and enforcement of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the study focused on identifying conversational circles that emerged in legislative, judicial, print media, and educational spheres. These Conversational Circles appeared to influence gender equity policy making in college and university athletics throughout the United States. Specific attention in this dissertation was turned to legislative, judicial development and media coverage in The New York Times, The Chronicle …

How might legal historians read text? What is particular about their modes of reading as opposed to those employed by readers in other disciplines? This essay will analyze the distinctive features of legal texts such as those stemming from the pervasive reliance upon conventions or boilerplate as part of a bricolage construction, the focus upon legitimizing gestures to official authority, and the normative, almost instrumental nature of many legal texts. While other sorts of texts might be more expressive, statutes, for example, always include a sanction. Drawing upon numerous examples, the paper identifies an expansive array of texts, including extra-official …
Genocide Of Native Americans: Historical Facts And Historiographic Debates, Brenden Rensink
Genocide Of Native Americans: Historical Facts And Historiographic Debates, Brenden Rensink
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
One of the most sobering themes that underlie North American history is the demographic collapse that Euro-American contact initiated among many of the continent's indigenous peoples. As twentieth-century scholars consider the post-contact unfolding of Euro-American and Native American histories and the ways in which they have become inextricably intertwined, their oft-divergent trajectories raise immediate questions of causality. There is no doubt that contact with Euro-Americans served as the catalyst for sea changes in Native America, but the demographic decline apparent in historical retrospect was not an inevitable outcome to be imposed upon historical actors or events. To presume that the …

An Exploratory Study Of Florida High School Principal Practices That Improve Student Achievement, Donna Michelle Reynolds
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to examine the leadership practices of high school principals in the state of Florida who improved student achievement in schools with a 30% or greater economically disadvantaged student rate. The secondary purpose of this study was to examine principal and student demographics of the identified schools and determine what relationship existed between student demographics, principal demographics, and principal practices. The results of this study offered guidance for principals across the state of Florida who struggled to close the achievement gap between economically advantaged and disadvantaged students. To achieve the purpose of the study, …
Using Ezra's Time As A Methodological Pivot For Understanding The Rhetoric And Functions Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts
Using Ezra's Time As A Methodological Pivot For Understanding The Rhetoric And Functions Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts
Religion - All Scholarship
The Persian period saw the transformation of pentateuchal materials into a scripture, the Torah. The story of Ezra exemplifies that transformation by its description of his manipulation of the physical scroll, his oral reading of it before the people of Jerusalem, and his arrangement for its professional translation/interpretation by Levites. These rituals have characterized the function of the Torah (and other scriptures) from that time forward. The Persian period, however, also marks a major change in the nature of our evidence for the form, contents and meaning of pentateuchal materials. The only historical evidence from before the time of Ezra …

The Sky In The Classroom, Susan Burggraf, Kidder Smith
The Sky In The Classroom, Susan Burggraf, Kidder Smith
Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice
We have all experienced the sky – its vast expanse, endless possibilities, the feeling of playful freedom one might have during vacation. It’s less obvious, though, how it fits into the classroom, neither slimming down its vastness nor overwhelming precise academic discourse. This article describes a multi-disciplinary course we taught at Bowdoin College, where we sought to expand students’ views of themselves, their minds, and the nature of academic inquiry by accomplishing the marriage of this vastness with precision. Our purpose here is to evoke that learning experience for other educators who might have similar goals.

Regionalism, Geography, And The International Legal Imagination, Carl Landauer
Regionalism, Geography, And The International Legal Imagination, Carl Landauer
Chicago Journal of International Law
Despite international law's identity as focused on spatial relations, it has long been dominated by a temporal, narrative imagination. This article argues for an increased spatial conception of international law, but one that is also culturally and temporally enriched. It begins with a section called "Regionalism without the Region," which describes how efforts at emphasizing the region in international law are often empty of regional content-that is, of true locality. Then, in a section on "GlobaliZation without the Globe," the article describes how globaliZation studies have focused on globaliZation as a process-that is, on the "ization" rather than the "globe" …

Trade, Time, And The Calculus Of Risk In Early Pacific Travel Writing, Michelle Burnham
English
In the 2005 Common-place issue on early America and the Pacific, historians Edward Gray and Alan Taylor observe that the Atlantic studies paradigm, which moves "beyond nations and states as the defining subjects of historical understanding, turning instead to large scale processes" is also particularly "useful for understanding Pacific history" since "dis- ease, migration, trade, and war effected [sic] the Pacific in much the way they effected [sic] the Atlantic." A similar transfer of the Atlantic world model to the Pacific informs David Igler s insistence that, like the Atlantic, the Pacific world was "international before it became national."1 Igler …
