Emotional Writing In An Hiv+ Population: Assessing Two Scoring Methods Of Emotional/Cognitive Processing And Their Effects On Health Status, Physical Symptoms And Psychological Well-Being., Lindsay M. Bira

Open Access Theses

Objective: The purpose of the present study is to examine whether level of written emotional expression (EE) and emotional/cognitive processing (ECP) for traumatic events predict health status (CD4 and VL), Category B symptoms, depression and anxiety in an HIV+ population over four years. Specifically, two different scoring methods of two variables within ECP (cognitive appraisal and self-esteem) will be compared to see if a change score (SMCHANGE) or a final score (SMFINAL) better predict outcomes. The possible mediating role of ECP in the relationship between EE and outcomes will also be explored. Methods: This longitudinal study assessed 169 HIV+ and …

Implementing And Evaluating The Communities That Care Prevention System In Rural Pennsylvania, Jonathan Olson

Journal of Youth Development

Communities That Care (CTC) is a prevention-planning system that helps community members plan, implement, and evaluate evidence-based prevention strategies that target common behavioral problems among youth. Recent evaluations of the system have indicated promising results. To date, most of these studies have examined broad effects across multiple implementation sites. The purpose of the current study was to determine if such promising results could be replicated in a single rural county that has been implementing the CTC system for more than a decade. The results of this utilization- focused evaluation indicate a variety of positive effects on outcomes among adolescents.

Theses and Dissertations

In 1989 while our severely ill son lay in our arms my husband and I asked the surgeon what he would do if he were in our shoes. “Play the hand you’re dealt.” he replied. It was not this doctor’s only reference to the gamble life holds for each of us. Based on his advice to us I began to investigate the role that fate and predetermination play in our lives and consequently how much control we have on the outcome of life’s events. A cathartic family portrait piece laid the groundwork for a series of metaphorical portraits as I …

User Choice Between Traditional And Computerized Methods: An Activity Perspective, Jun Sun Dec 2011

User Choice Between Traditional And Computerized Methods: An Activity Perspective, Jun Sun

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Numerous computerized methods emerge to replace traditional methods in people’s personal, work and social lives, but many are hesitant to make the transition. This study examines the factors that influence human choice between different methods. According to Activity Theory, traditional and computerized methods are both tools that a person uses for a certain task. The situated experiences with various methods shape people’s attitude toward using them later in terms of tool readiness. The understanding leads to hypothesized relationships between user-, method- and task-specific factors and the dependent variable. The results from an empirical study support that method experiences have strong …

Statistical Optimization Of Blanching Time And Temperature Of Irish York Cabbage Using Desirability Function, Amit Jaiswal, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam, Shilpi Gupta Dec 2011

Statistical Optimization Of Blanching Time And Temperature Of Irish York Cabbage Using Desirability Function, Amit Jaiswal, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam, Shilpi Gupta

Articles

The effect of different heat treatments, as a means of preprocessing, on the phytochemicals present in Irish York cabbage was studied. A comparison of blanching (by immersing in water) and microwaving (using water as a medium) indicated that microwaving is detrimental to the phytochemicals present in cabbage. To achieve a blanching time and temperature combination that would result in minimal loss of phytochemicals, central composite design that integrates a desirability approach was used. A second-order polynomial equation was developed, indicating the effect of the blanching time and temperature on the total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl …

McGeorge School of Law Global Center for Business and Development Annual Symposium

Moderator:Omar Dajani, Professor of Law, University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law

This panel will explore the systemic implications of wider dissemination of human rights norms. One positive consequence is increased attention to – and, perhaps also, protection of – human rights in a range of forums. A negative consequence, however, may be fragmentation in the meaning of human rights norms. What happens when national and international institutions adopt conflicting interpretations of human rights norms? Is fragmentation necessarily problematic or can it serve useful purposes, such as facilitating experimentation with diverse approaches or providing a check on hegemonic ambitions? …

Don't Blame Me: The Effects Of Ceo Power, Board Affiliation, And Sarbanes-Oxley On Ceo Turnover Following Financial Misrepresentation, David Gomulya Dec 2011

Don't Blame Me: The Effects Of Ceo Power, Board Affiliation, And Sarbanes-Oxley On Ceo Turnover Following Financial Misrepresentation, David Gomulya

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

I examine the conditions under which CEOs are terminated as an outcome of firm financial restatements. I find that chief executive‘s power acts to limit terminations, especially in cases of more severe restatements, while board members most closely affiliated with the CEO appear to avoid the stigma of financial restatements by deflecting blame to the CEO, increasing terminations. I also examine the effectiveness of regulatory remedies such as Sarbanes-Oxley, aimed at strongly penalizing CEOs for financial misrepresentation. Sarbanes-Oxley significantly alters the relationship between CEOs and their board. My context is restating U.S. public firms before (1995-1998) and after Sarbanes-Oxley (2003-2006).

Social Capital In Senegal: Bane Or Boom?, Laura Livesay

Capstone Projects – Politics and Government

In Senegal, at first glance, it appears that one’s social capital allows the individual to be able to survive, but not thrive. Social capital in Senegal appears to hinder local economic development. For my Capstone, I would like to focus more on what social capital means in Senegal, looking at both the benefits and drawbacks of its’ affect on local economic development. I will be focusing my research within my site, Dahra, population 40,000, and drawing upon case studies as I begin work. I will also be looking at the role of non-governmental organizations (specifically Peace Corps) in generating social …

A Call For Change: The Evolution Of The Modern Documentary From Informative Media To Persuasive Platform, Valerie England

iResearch: Department of Communication Studies Invitational Scholar Slam 2011-2012

In the past several years, new documentaries have begun to evolve from informative media to persuasive platform as a result of changing cultural contexts and ideologies. These four films – Sicko, Food Inc., Waiting for Superman, and Inside Job effectively utilize common narratives and themes to present audiences with calls for reform in critical areas such as food safety, quality education, access to healthcare, and financial regulation. This shift reflects a transformation of the valuation of knowledge and how it serves various conflicting group interests.
