Electronic Payments In Healthcare, C.R. Krishnaswamy Oct 2011

Electronic Payments In Healthcare, C.R. Krishnaswamy

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

In this paper the author has developed a theoretical framework for addressing the healthcare costs and based on it he has analyzed the payment system that is an integral part of healthcare payments. The author concurs with the recommendations made in earlier studies that switching from a paper-based system to an electronic system would not only reduce costs but also improve the efficiency of the system. By using an electronic payment system for payment of healthcare claims, huge savings can be achieved on an annual basis, as the numbers of claims processed each year are in the billions.

It's My Ipad! Protecting Critical Data On Personal Mobile Devices In The Medical Setting, Michael R. Lehrfeld, Rita M. Barrios, Chris Phillippe Oct 2011

It's My Ipad! Protecting Critical Data On Personal Mobile Devices In The Medical Setting, Michael R. Lehrfeld, Rita M. Barrios, Chris Phillippe

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

The pervasiveness of mobile devices has forced many organizations to support connectivity of corporate and private devices. Corporate devices are highly configurable regarding authentication, encryption, and remote wiping. BlackBerry devices can be fully deployed and managed using a centralized Blackberry Enterprise Server, however when a user owned device connects to enterprise servers, data security becomes a concern. Introduce a litany of complex legislative rulings and laws concerning protected data across various business domains and now personal mobile devices become security risks. This paper will discuss current issues in securing personal mobile devices in the healthcare environment and present possible solutions.

Rcq: Inter-Clinician Relationships, Practice Audit And Communities Of Practice For Healthcare Quality Improvement, Michael S. Dohan, Joseph Tan

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Inter-clinician relationships and communities of practice have the ability to support continuous quality improvement efforts within healthcare organizations, by offering a means of sharing necessary knowledge that is generally not possessed by clinicians. Sustained adherence to the processes critical to quality improvement is necessary for durable improvements in quality, and knowledge sharing is necessary for supporting these skills, such as practice audit, change management and use of the associated technology. This paper unveils the RCQ (Relationships, Communities, Quality) model, which provides a framework for the purpose of sustaining practice audit for quality improvement in healthcare.

Effect Of Practitioner Self Care And Anxiety On Relationships Within The Context Of Organizational Change, Juanita Manning-Walsh

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

The purpose of this research paper is to review the literature and suggest the relationships between organizational change through implementation of new health information technology (HIT) and/or reconfiguration of existing HIT, practitioner anxiety, and effective caring practitioner/patient and practitioner/practitioner relationships using a conceptual framework of Relationship Centered Care (RCC). Engaging in frequent and regular self-care interventions has been shown to be related to practitioner/patient caring ability and caring efficacy. According to a published model of RCC, it may be anticipated that selfcare may decrease practitioner anxiety in the context of organizational change and increase ability of the practitioner to engage …

Say Good-Bye To The Silos And Hello To Collaboration: A New Curriculum Approach, Sharie Falan, Bernard Han Oct 2011

Say Good-Bye To The Silos And Hello To Collaboration: A New Curriculum Approach, Sharie Falan, Bernard Han

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

In sharp contrast with the customary traditions of educational silos in the delivery of knowledge and understanding, this paper presents a true interdisciplinary curriculum that is designed to supply the community with graduates who are prepared to take on diverse roles in health care and information management. The complexity of our modern communities and their anticipated futuristic needs suggest that graduates in health care must be able to apply more than a traditional singular knowledge domain to articulate problems and provide solutions to those problems in meaningful ways. The curriculum approach presented will facilitate interdisciplinary knowledge learning from existing classes, …

Guiding Health Care Policy Through Applied Public Health Modeling And Simulation, Jonathan P. Leidig, Chris L. Barrett, Madhav Marathe Oct 2011

Guiding Health Care Policy Through Applied Public Health Modeling And Simulation, Jonathan P. Leidig, Chris L. Barrett, Madhav Marathe

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

The risk of a widespread epidemic is a primary public health concern with implications for healthcare providers and organizations. Modeling and simulation techniques have been successfully applied at the national level to set governmental polices and mitigation strategies through simulation-based predictions. Existing research in this field has been non-uniform in its coverage of local systems and region-specific findings. New collaborations between on the ground providers and modeling groups are required for successful simulation-based experimentation of region-specific health systems. These proposed collaborations are expected to contribute high-quality sub-population datasets to be used in experiments at the national level and allow for …

Health And Information Technology, Aaron D. Tremblay

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

The healthcare industry continues to grow to meet demands of a changing environment and a growing number of people. Moreover, the Information Technology space continues to expand to meet customer’s needs and the continuing desire of people and companies to be the most technologically advanced. In order to allow the healthcare industry [or any industry] to continue to grow, it has to allow itself to expand with technology to help serve its customers more effectively. Through this partnership, it is possible for healthcare to become something more to its customers through more efficient and effective healthcare management.

The Active Bundle Scheme For Protecting Electronic Medical Records, Raed M. Salih, Leszek T. Lilien Oct 2011

The Active Bundle Scheme For Protecting Electronic Medical Records, Raed M. Salih, Leszek T. Lilien

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Adoption of the electronic medical records (EMRs) or electronic health records (EHRs) by healthcare providers will improve the quality of the American healthcare and reduce the annual bill. However, it will also increase privacy threats due to easier dissemination of EMRs/EHRs than “paper” medical records. Current privacy protection solutions for patient EMRs/EHRs have two main limitations: (1) they require an extensive exchange of messages between computer systems of healthcare providers; and (2) they depend only on data encryption.

In this position paper, we propose a solution that provides protection for the patients' EMRs/EHRs disseminated among different authorized healthcare provider systems. …

A New Face In The Crowd: An Examination On The Social Integration Of Children With Disabilities, Christen Maguire Oct 2011

A New Face In The Crowd: An Examination On The Social Integration Of Children With Disabilities, Christen Maguire

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Historically in India people with disabilities have been pushed to the side and have not been given the attention which they need and deserve. As a result this population has become extremely marginalized and has not been included in making decisions with the rest of society. The main reason why this has become such a marginalized group is because of a negative stigma which has been associated with mental disabilities. Slowly this stigma is beginning to change, but it still affects the way people view and act towards the disabled. The integration of people with disabilities into the rest of …

Assessing Mental Health Care For Iraqi Refugees In Jordan Looking To New Solutions For The Future, Hannah B. Egan Oct 2011

Assessing Mental Health Care For Iraqi Refugees In Jordan Looking To New Solutions For The Future, Hannah B. Egan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Across the globe citizens flee their native countries in search of newfound safety and stability. These people are known as refugees. Since 2003 refugees from Iraq have entered Jordan in search of a better life. Unfortunately, the terrors that Iraqi refugees escape do not disappear after crossing country lines. These memories cause serious mental health conditions for Iraqi refugees. Such conditions are intensified by the living environment in Jordan where Iraqis are not granted legal status. While some refugees are wealthy and others are resettled to the United States or Europe, the majority remain “stuck” in Jordan.

This study seeks …

College Students And Eating Disorders [Brochure And Video], Jessica Heffinger, Nikki N. Eversole

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

The pressures of being the “perfect” size while in college can be overwhelming for some individuals. These pressures weigh on many students minds (not just women) and may lead to an individual developing an eating disorder. Anorexia and Bulimia are two of the most common eating disorders among college students today (Reynolds, 2009). From personal interviews with college students and our research we have found that these two eating disorders, among many others, may have a huge impact on a student’s success while in college. Creating awareness about eating disorders, the effects, warning signs, and resources will help students begin …

A Student's Guide To Overcoming The Pressure To Succeed In Higher Education [Brochure And Video], Amber R. Sellers, Tori Holmes

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

All college students experience some sort of internal and/or external pressure to reach their definition of success. Family members, friends, professors, future employers, coaches, student organizations, and most importantly, students themselves expect certain behaviors to lead to a successful collegiate career (Newton, 2000). This video highlights the experiences and viewpoints of one student’s struggle with residual stress and offers support resources found on most campuses across the country. With the prevalence of stress and anxiety related disorders found within today’s collegiate population (Levine, 2005), this video hopes to raise awareness and assist struggling students who are seeking relief by providing …

Sex And Sexual Health: What's On Your Mind? [Brochure], Sarah Rigsby, Kristen Smith

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

As young adults begin their experience on a college campus they can often times find themselves in a more open environment where the topic of sex can more readily be discussed. But, rarely are they given the opportunity to really ask the questions at the forefront of their minds on the topic of not only sex but sexual health. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation (2003) by the age of 24, one in four American’s will have contracted an STD. It is important to allow students the ability to gain the awareness they feel necessary to not only remain sexually …

It Can Happen Here Too: Cyberbullying On College Campuses [Brochure], Tiffany Polite, Andrew Swan

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

While much of the emphasis on cyberbullying has been on elementary and adolescent youth, there is growing evidence that it is happening at the college level as well. Students, faculty members, and administration have all been affected by cyberbullying, which at times, has resulted in ruined personal and professional reputations. It is difficult to grasp how often cyberbullying happens amongst adults, because they are usually too embarrassed to come forward. According to Working to Halt Online Abuse’s 2010 Cyberbullying Statistics, those in the 18-30 age range had been victimized most often. Increasingly, research is being presented that shows that many …

Managing Finances In College [Brochure And Video], Laura Heidel, Caleb M. Parrigan Oct 2011

Managing Finances In College [Brochure And Video], Laura Heidel, Caleb M. Parrigan

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

Managing finances is a very important instrument that should be demonstrated on a daily basis by all students, and also any individual that is working full-time and has a set of expenses that must be paid. Creating a budget helps college students resist physical, mental, and emotional stress. Knowing how to budget your expenses will teach students how to be responsible, how you view money, and the true value of a dollar. Credit cards are also a potential stressor for students. Nellie Mae, a student loan provider, finds that 83% of undergraduates have at least one credit card and the …

Socialization And Campus Involvement [Brochure And Video], Allison Smith, Heather Thomas Oct 2011

Socialization And Campus Involvement [Brochure And Video], Allison Smith, Heather Thomas

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

College is a new and challenging experience and can often put emotional, mental and/or physical strain on incoming students (Sax, Bryant & Gilmartin, 2002). Students may be affected differently based on the situations they encounter. Socialization and campus involvement can be a key factor in helping students overcome these issues. According to Pritchard and Wilson (2003), studies have shown that students who have a higher sense of emotional, mental and physical well-being are more likely to succeed in college. Gaining awareness of the importance of socialization while in college can help maximize a college experience and provide beneficial tools for …

Career Satisfaction Of Public Secondary School Teachers In Pakistan, Azhar Chaudhary Oct 2011

Career Satisfaction Of Public Secondary School Teachers In Pakistan, Azhar Chaudhary

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Strong and healthy collegial relationships among educators is believed to be a vital element in enhancing school effectiveness and school improvement. Numerous benefits from teacher collegiality have been reported as evidence of the need for building a more effective collegial culture in schools. Regrouping among teachers to promote collaboration in teaching and new configurations of teacher collegiality constitute integral parts of constructive schools (Johnson, 1990). However, in spite of its numerous benefits, collegiality is still a rare element in most schools (Bruffee, 1999; Heider, 2005). This article elucidates some of the common barriers to collegiality among school teachers.
