Sexual And Injection-Related Risks In Puerto Rican-Born Injection Drug Users Living In New York City: A Mixed-Methods Analysis, Camila Gelpí-Acosta, Holly Hagan, Samuel M. Jenness, Travis Wendel, Alan Neaigus

Publications and Research

Background These data were collected as part of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) study. NHBS is a cross-sectional study to investigate HIV behavioral risks among core risk groups in 21 U.S. cities with the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence. This analysis examines data from the NHBS data collection cycle with IDU conducted in New York City in 2009. We explored how the recency of migration from Puerto Rico (PR) to New York City (NYC) impacts both syringe sharing and unprotected sex among injection drug users (IDU) currently living in NYC. Methods We used a mixed-methods approach to examine differences in risk …

Model Construction Of Option Pricing Based On Fuzzy Theory, Shang-En Yu, Ming-Yuan Leon Li, Kun-Huang Huarng, Tsung-Hao Chen, Chen-Yuan Chen Oct 2011

Model Construction Of Option Pricing Based On Fuzzy Theory, Shang-En Yu, Ming-Yuan Leon Li, Kun-Huang Huarng, Tsung-Hao Chen, Chen-Yuan Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Option pricing is a tool that investors often use for the purpose of arbitrage or hedging. However, both the BlackScholes model and the CRR model can only provide a theoretical reference value. The volatility in the CRR model cannot always appear in the precise sense because the financial markets fluctuate from time to time. Hence, the fuzzy volatility is naturally to be considered. The main purpose of this paper is the application of fuzzy sets theory to the CRR model. It is expected that fuzzy volatility, instead of the crisp values conventionally used in the CRR model, can provide reasonable …

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Concentrations of liver enzymes in plasma are widely used as indicators of liver disease. We carried out a genome-wide association study in 61,089 individuals, identifying 42 loci associated with concentrations of liver enzymes in plasma, of which 32 are new associations (P = 10−8 to P = 10−190). We used functional genomic approaches including metabonomic profiling and gene expression analyses to identify probable candidate genes at these regions. We identified 69 candidate genes, including genes involved in biliary transport (ATP8B1 and ABCB11), glucose, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism (FADS1, FADS2, GCKR, JMJD1C, HNF1A …

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Secession Leads To Demining Challenges In Sudan, Cisr Journal

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

In the months following South Sudan’s July 2011 electoral secession from the former Sudan, the South’s ability to successfully maintain a demining program has become heavily dependent on its economic and post-conflict recovery. At this point in time, however, much of the South’s sustainability is ultimately reliant on its relationship with the North and, more significantly, the international community, thereby rendering its demining program into an uncertain future.

The Tampa Bay Hotel - A Tale, Alesya V. Izoita Oct 2011

The Tampa Bay Hotel - A Tale, Alesya V. Izoita

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

At the mention of Florida, sunny beaches, lurking gators, and fresh-squeezed orange juice spring to mind. Yes, there is plenty of all that now, but how did Florida become Florida? Tampa played a large role in spreading the word about the Sunshine State and successfully lured countless tourists from all over the globe. World-wide wonder was evoked and curiosity shipped guests by the train load to a little fishing village entirely unknown a few years prior. What then attracted tourists? It was by no means the natural assets found on Florida’s gulf, but rather a response to the herculean efforts …

Oxidative Stress Response To Short Duration Bout Of Submaximal Aerobic Exercise In Healthy Young Adults, Keith M. Diaz, Deborah L. Feairheller, Kathleen M. Sturgeon, Sheara T. Williamson, Michael D. Brown

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to investigate the oxidative stress response to a short duration bout of submaximal exercise in a cohort of healthy young adults. 15 apparently healthy college age males and females completed a modified Bruce-protocol treadmill test to 75–80% of their heart rate reserve. Blood samples collected immediately before (pre-exercise), immediately after, 30, 60 and 120 minutes post-exercise were assayed for total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide disumutase (SOD), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), and protein carbonyls (PC). SOD activity was significantly increased from pre-exercise levels at 30 minutes (77%), 60 minutes (33%), and 120 minutes (37%) post-exercise. …

Educating Newly Diagnosed Cancer Patients Who Are Undergoing Radiation Therapy, Michael Mimms

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research study was to examine the various levels of understanding that patients had about cancer when they had been diagnosed with the illness, and to improve their understanding of the radiation treatment process through the presentation of an educational video (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007). Patients often remained confused and thereby missed vital information, regardless of how many explanations or how much information they had been given to explain cancer and the options they had for treatment (Eiser, Davies, Jenny, & Glaser, 2005; Kodish et al., 2004). The goal of this study was to satisfy the need …

A Knight At The Opera: Heine, Wagner, Herzl, Peretz, And The Legacy Of Der Tannhäuser, Leah Garrett Oct 2011

A Knight At The Opera: Heine, Wagner, Herzl, Peretz, And The Legacy Of Der Tannhäuser, Leah Garrett

Shofar Supplements in Jewish Studies

A Knight at the Opera examines the remarkable and unknown role that the medieval legend (and Wagner opera) Tannhäuser played in Jewish cultural life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book analyzes how three of the greatest Jewish thinkers of that era, Heinrich Heine, Theodor Herzl, and I. L. Peretz, used this central myth of Germany to strengthen Jewish culture and to attack anti-Semitism. In the original medieval myth, a Christian knight lives in sin with the seductive pagan goddess Venus in the Venusberg. He escapes her clutches and makes his way to Rome to seek absolution from …

Self-Reported Aircraft Noise Complaints And Socioeconomic Demographics In The Greater Philadelphia Region: A Survey Of Complaint Data From 1997 To 2009, Jonathan D. Collette Oct 2011

Self-Reported Aircraft Noise Complaints And Socioeconomic Demographics In The Greater Philadelphia Region: A Survey Of Complaint Data From 1997 To 2009, Jonathan D. Collette

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Aircraft noise complaints are a data set that airport operators can easily collect, review, and analyze. Although this complaint data maynot be indicative of total community annoyance, it still may provide insight into local concerns and perception regarding aircraft noiseimpacts. As has been observed in other research, perception plays a large part in noise annoyance, including areas where the acousticalnoise levels are below the 65 db DNL threshold used by the FAA to determine land use compatibility. Noise complaint data collectedfrom the Philadelphia, PA region during the period from 1997 to 2009 was compared to five indicators (per-capita income, medianhousehold …

This study examines the impact and relationship between demographic factors and risk perceptions toward Small AircraftTransportation Systems (SATS). The study included 178 participants who responded to an electronic survey administered to PurdueUniversity faculty members and to selected leaders within the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics department. Participants were surveyed asto their demographic identities including gender, age, academic position, and aviation familiarity, as well as their perceptions of physical, financial, and status risk from a SATS program. Results of this study showed that certain demographic factors are significant predictors ofcertain SATS travel risk perceptions. Participants’ intentions to travel via SATS also are identified to …

The Black Experience In Business Aviation: An Exploratory Case Study, Tara L. Harl Dr., Phil Roberts Oct 2011

The Black Experience In Business Aviation: An Exploratory Case Study, Tara L. Harl Dr., Phil Roberts

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Despite a rich heritage of interest in aviation as a career choice, Blacks have been underrepresented across all three areas of aviation inthe United States: airline/air transport, military, and general/business aviation. The lack of interest in aviation careers by Blacks has notbeen the issue; societal obstacles, historical ignorance of the Black aviation experience, and an industry that traditionally closed mostdoors to professional aviation careers for minorities have been the culprits. Business and corporate aviation (corporate flight departments/service providers) in particular has experienced low entrance and retention numbers for Black professionals, a reflection of the widercivilian aviation industry. An exploratory single …

Embodied Religion And Liberal Society: The Obstacle Of De Facto Established Religion, Kevin Carnahan Oct 2011

Embodied Religion And Liberal Society: The Obstacle Of De Facto Established Religion, Kevin Carnahan

Conference on Philosophy and Theology

Recent scholarship suggests that religion should be conceived in terms of embodied social practices as much as (if not more than) a set of systematic beliefs. Such accounts of religion, I will argue, raise problems that have not been adequately treated in current discussion of the role of religion in liberal society.

Results: This contribution looks back on the work carried out by the Blue Obelisk in the past 5 years and surveys progress and remaining challenges in the areas of Open Data, Open Standards, and Open Source in chemistry. Conclusions: We show that the Blue …

Workload And The Changing Health Care Environment, Denisse Neill Oct 2011

Workload And The Changing Health Care Environment, Denisse Neill

Administrative Issues Journal

Changes in the health care environment have impacted nursing workload, quality of care, and patient safety. Nurses perceive that the quality of their work has diminished. Traditional nursing workload measures do not guarantee efficiency and do not adequately capture the complexity of nursing workload. Studies have identified tasks associated with nursing work but not the perception of the nurse about the mental work required to meet the demands. Human factors research examines cognitive and perceptual abilities needed to perform tasks in a reasonable time without error. Researchers using a human factors framework have focused on mental processing to understand why …

Leveraging The Mbti To Affect Change, Maryrose Hart Oct 2011

Leveraging The Mbti To Affect Change, Maryrose Hart

Administrative Issues Journal

This presentation will discuss how the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) instrument can best be used to facilitate positive change in an organization. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is an instrument based on research conducted by Carl Jung and Isabel Briggs Myers. Briggs originally developed the concept to better understand the behaviors of normal individuals. The strength of the MBTI instrument lies in helping managers understand preferences, nuances, behaviors, and mental processes of individual employees. By using the MBTI, a person can predict what types of information disparate individuals prefer, the format and delivery, and orientations toward change. This insight can …
