Hybrid Veggies & Mixed Kids: Ecocriticism And Race In Ruth Ozeki's Pastoral Heartlands, Melissa Eriko Poulsen Oct 2011

Hybrid Veggies & Mixed Kids: Ecocriticism And Race In Ruth Ozeki's Pastoral Heartlands, Melissa Eriko Poulsen

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This paper explores the troping of racial categories and mixed race bodies in Ruth Ozeki’s All Over Creation (2003) and My Year of Meats (1999). Moving through both transnational and local space, Ozeki’s writes an ecocritical pastoral text in order to resist representations of people of mixed race stemming from nineteenth century racial theory. Drawing attention to the consumption of food within and across national borders, whether genetically modified potatoes or hormone-infused beef, Ozeki simultaneously highlights the uncritical consumption of the language of biology around the mixed race body. All Over Creation and My Year of Meats are constructed around …

Who Pollutes? – Household Solid Waste Management Problem In Kathmandu, Nepal, Menuka Karki Oct 2011

Who Pollutes? – Household Solid Waste Management Problem In Kathmandu, Nepal, Menuka Karki

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This paper estimates the impact of household characteristics on waste disposal choices. Waste disposal choices are: (1) Burning/Dumping (2) Collection and (3) Composting. The analysis shows that urban household prefer less composting and more collection which involve no waste processing and it attributes to the environmental degradation. However, education does not seem to influence waste disposal choices. Easy access to public transportation like bus stop increases environmental quality, which can be a recommended as a policy to decrease environment degradation.

Knowledge, Attitude, And Behavior Towards Environmental Quality, Hari Katuwal, Alok K. Bohara

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

We examine the relationship between individual knowledge and attitude towards environmental behavior, namely river ecology, in Kathmandu, Nepal. Environmental problem is one of the most serious challenges of 21st century. Air and water pollution, global warming and climate change, loss of biodiversity and rain forest destruction, and hazardous waste, and so on are some of the examples of current environmental problems. They also constitute local as well as global threat to the future. The relationship between human beings and environment is driven by several factors. These include socioeconomic characteristics like income, education, culture, religion and traditional practices. These characteristics affect …

Attitudes Toward Dam Construction In The Garhwal Region Of The Himalayas, Denise Benoit Scott, Annpurna Nautiyal

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Although mass protest against business and the state is not at all uncommon in the hill region, residents of the Chauras region have been relatively silent with regard to the dam project. In fact, little is know about the attitudes of the people in the region beyond assumptions make by policymakers and academics. This study sheds light on the conditions, experiences, and concerns of the villagers most affected by the dam project. The findings are important for informing public policy in areas where these kinds of major “development” projects interact with, and have the potential to deeply affect, the surrounding …

A Watershed Conservation Success Story In Nepal: Land Use Changes Over 30 Years, Bill Fleming, Jeanie Fleming Oct 2011

A Watershed Conservation Success Story In Nepal: Land Use Changes Over 30 Years, Bill Fleming, Jeanie Fleming

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

In the middle hill region of west central Nepal in 1977, a quarter of a 113 km2 watershed experienced erosion rates exceeding 30 Mt/ha/yr due to high rainfall intensities, unstable soils, steep slopes and severe overgrazing. This increasing land degradation coupled with indiscriminate forest harvesting threatened the survival of forests and viable pasture lands. However, an innovative national government policy of handing over forest management to local people was put in place over the next three decades, resulting in conversion of nearly all the eroded grazing and shrub land to managed pasture and forest, a five-fold increase in grass and …

Disordered Eating, Agency, And Social Class: Elaine Mar’S Paper Daughter, Roxanne Naseem Rashedi Oct 2011

Disordered Eating, Agency, And Social Class: Elaine Mar’S Paper Daughter, Roxanne Naseem Rashedi

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This article examines the relationship between disordered eating and class identity in Paper Daughter: the memoir of Elaine Mar, a Chinese-American woman who emigrated with her family from the Toishan region of mainland China in 1972 to a working-class neighborhood in Denver, Colorado. In Paper Daughter, Mar explores the relationship between bodily “excess,” as sociologist Beverly Skeggs describes, and class identity. A close examination of Mar’s disordered eating shows readers how her ED stems from a class inferiority complex. Gendered as female, and classed as inferior due to her immigrant status and working-class background, classifies Mar as the “other.” Mar …

A Psychoanalytical Approach To Bich Minh Nguyen's Stealing Buddha's Dinner, Wenying Xu Oct 2011

A Psychoanalytical Approach To Bich Minh Nguyen's Stealing Buddha's Dinner, Wenying Xu

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Racial minorities in the U.S. are often tormented by the tension between the corporeal and the ontological, with the former experienced as confining and the latter expansive. Such ambivalence often expresses itself in one's relationship with food. Here I propose to illustrate how Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytical theory on desire can assist us in understanding ethnicity as a bodily performance, which I venture to call an embodied ontology, applying this concept to Bich Minh Nguyen's Stealing Buddha's Dinner (2007).
