The Knowledge-Driven Exploration Of Integrated Biomedical Knowledge Sources Facilitates The Generation Of New Hypotheses, Vinh Nguyen, Olivier Bodenreider, Todd Minning, Amit P. Sheth Oct 2011

The Knowledge-Driven Exploration Of Integrated Biomedical Knowledge Sources Facilitates The Generation Of New Hypotheses, Vinh Nguyen, Olivier Bodenreider, Todd Minning, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Knowledge gained from the scientific literature can complement newly obtained experimental data in helping researchers understand the pathological processes underlying diseases. However, unless the scientific literature and experimental data are semantically integrated, it is generally difficult for scientists to exploit the two sources effectively. We argue that, in addition to the semantic integration of heterogeneous knowledge sources, the usability of the integrated resource by scientists is dependent upon the availability of knowledge visualization and exploration tools. Moreover, the integration techniques must be scalable and the exploration interfaces must be easy to use by bench scientists. The end goal of such …

The Group-Level Consequences Of Sexual Conflict In Multigroup Populations, Omar Tonsi Eldakar, Andrew C. Gallup Oct 2011

The Group-Level Consequences Of Sexual Conflict In Multigroup Populations, Omar Tonsi Eldakar, Andrew C. Gallup

Biology Faculty Articles

In typical sexual conflict scenarios, males best equipped to exploit females are favored locally over more prudent males, despite reducing female fitness. However, local advantage is not the only relevant form of selection. In multigroup populations, groups with less sexual conflict will contribute more offspring to the next generation than higher conflict groups, countering the local advantage of harmful males. Here, we varied male aggression within-and between-groups in a laboratory population of water striders and measured resulting differences in local population growth over a period of three weeks. The overall pool fitness (i.e., adults produced) of less aggressive pools exceeded …

Characterization And Modeling Of A Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System Using A Recurrent Neural Network, Daniel M. Riley, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Oct 2011

Characterization And Modeling Of A Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System Using A Recurrent Neural Network, Daniel M. Riley, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Photovoltaic (PV) system modeling is used throughout the photovoltaic industry for the prediction of PV system output under a given set of weather conditions. PV system modeling has a wide range of uses including: prepurchase comparisons of PV system components, system health monitoring, and payback (return on investment) times. in order to adequately model a PV system, the system must be characterized to establish the relationship between given weather inputs (e.g., irradiance, spectrum, temperature) and desired system outputs (e.g., AC power, module temperature). Traditional approaches to system characterization involve characterizing and modeling each component in a PV system and forming …

Marine Bivalve Geochemistry And Shell Ultrastructure From Modern Low Ph Environments, S Hahn, R Rodolfo-Metalpa, E Griesshaber, Ww Schmahl, D Buhl, Jm Hall-Spencer, C Baggini, Kt Fehr, A Immenhauser

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Bivalve shells can provide excellent archives of past environmental change but have not been used to interpret ocean acidification events. We investigated carbon, oxygen and trace element records from different shell layers in the mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis (from the Mediterranean) and M. edulis (from the Wadden Sea) combined with detailed investigations of the shell ultrastructure. Mussels from the harbour of Ischia (Mediterranean, Italy) were transplanted and grown in water with mean pHT 7.3 and mean pHT 8.1 near CO2 vents on the east coast of the island of Ischia. The shells of transplanted mussels were compared with M. edulis collected …

Cultural Perspectives On Social Responsibility In Higher Education, Iris M Yob Oct 2011

Cultural Perspectives On Social Responsibility In Higher Education, Iris M Yob

Higher Learning Research Communications

The writers of the UNESCO document, Rethinking education: Towards a global common good? challenge educators to address their efforts to meet the current threats to sustainable life for all who share this planet. One way that higher education has been attempting to do this is through campus-community partnerships working to solve social problems locally or further afield. In this exploratory study, answers were sought to the question of why faculty members and administrators participate in these service partnerships, both in terms of what motivates them to do so and what they hope to accomplish, and how cultural context may influence …

Person To Person In Costa Rica, Katie Main Oct 2011

Person To Person In Costa Rica, Katie Main

2011-12 Field Notes

While still in the midst of their study abroad experiences, students at Linfield College write reflective essays. Their essays address issues of cultural similarity and difference, compare lifestyles, mores, norms, and habits between their host countries and home, and examine changes in perceptions about their host countries and the United States. In this essay, Katie Main describes her observations during her study abroad program at Centro Cultural e Historico Jose Figueres Ferrer, in San Ramón, Costa Rica.

Middle School Students’ Perceptions Of Coeducational And Same-Sex Physical Education, Scott M. Ronspies Oct 2011

Middle School Students’ Perceptions Of Coeducational And Same-Sex Physical Education, Scott M. Ronspies

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

The prevalence of obesity and sedentary behaviors among children and adolescents is increasing at an alarming rate. The obesity epidemic is reaching proportions never seen across our nation. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine middle school students’ perceptions of coeducational and same-sex physical education classes. The study consisted of 3 girls and 3 boys 12-13 years old. One-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted with each participant to gain an understanding of their perceptions of physical education (P.E.) classes that were coeducational and same-sex in nature. The results indicated that middle school students shared a variety of perceptions concerning …

Structural And Kinetic Studies On Metallo-Β-Lactamase Imp-1, Dionne H. Griffin, Timothy K. Richmond, Carlo Sanchez, Abraham Jon Moller, Robert M. Breece, David L. Tierney, Brian Bennett, Michael W. Crowder Oct 2011

Structural And Kinetic Studies On Metallo-Β-Lactamase Imp-1, Dionne H. Griffin, Timothy K. Richmond, Carlo Sanchez, Abraham Jon Moller, Robert M. Breece, David L. Tierney, Brian Bennett, Michael W. Crowder

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

In an effort to probe for metal binding to metallo-β-lactamase (MβL) IMP-1, the enzyme was overexpressed, purified, and characterized. The resulting enzyme was shown to bind 2 equiv of Zn(II), exhibit significant catalytic activity, and yield EXAFS results similar to crystallographic data previously reported. Rapid kinetic studies showed that IMP-1 does not stabilize a nitrocefin-derived reaction intermediate; rather, the enzyme follows a simple Michaelis mechanism to hydrolyze nitrocefin. Metal-substituted and metal-reconstituted analogues of IMP-1 were prepared by directly adding metal ion stocks to metal-free enzyme, which was generated by dialysis versus EDTA. UV–vis studies on IMP-1 containing 1 equiv of …

Examination Of Genetic Changes Associated With Breast Cancer Disparities Across Multiple Ethnicities, Ashley E. Green Oct 2011

Examination Of Genetic Changes Associated With Breast Cancer Disparities Across Multiple Ethnicities, Ashley E. Green

Open Access Theses

Breast cancer is of a primary concern in women, although it can occur in men. It is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths amongst women, and it is estimated that roughly 39,840 women will die of this disease this year. Breast cancer occurs across all populations and ethnicities. When African-Americans (AA) present with breast cancer, they usually have poorly differentiated tumors, and are more likely to be diagnosed with an advanced stage tumor. When compared to Caucasian (Cau) women, African-American women also have higher breast cancer mortality. The causes of these differences are not yet definitively known, but …
