Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Healthy brain aging and cognitive function are promoted by exercise. The benefits of exercise are attributed to several mechanisms, many which highlight its neuroprotective role via actions that enhance neurogenesis, neuronal morphology and/or neurotrophin release. However, the brain is also composed of glial and vascular elements, and comparatively less is known regarding the effects of exercise on these components in the aging brain. Here, we show that aerobic exercise at mid-age decreased markers of unhealthy brain aging including astrocyte hypertrophy, a hallmark of brain aging. Middle-aged female mice were assigned to a sedentary group or provided a running wheel for …

Neonatal Screening : Mean Haemoglobin And Red Cell Indices In Cord Blood From Omani Neonates, Salam Alkindi, Anil Pathare, Ali Al-Zadjali, Shoaib, Hamood Al-Haddabi, Qamariya Al-Abri, David Gravell, Mariam Mathew, Rajagopal Krishnamoorthy

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: The aim of this study was to validate the interpretation of red blood cell indices in complete blood count (CBC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) results on cord blood samples in consecutive Omani neonates. Methods: Cord blood samples from 7,837 neonates, were analysed with CBC and HPLC using the β-thalassaemia short programme. Direct sequencing of abnormal samples with HbS, HbD, HbE and HbC was performed to validate the HPLC results. Additionally, in cases with HbA <10%, the β-globin gene was directly sequenced for β-thalassaemia mutation analysis. Results: Overall, 4,042 subjects (51.58%) had normal HPLC (HbA 22.88+_8.03; HbF 77.02+_8.04), whereas the presence of Hb Barts in the remaining 3,795 cases (48.42%) indicated the presence of α-thalassaemia. No case of HbH was detected. In the former subgroup respectively, the mean Hb (15.38+_2.04 g/dl) red blood cell (RBC) count (4.69+_0.68 x 1012/l), Hct (50.5+_7.18%), mean corpuscular volume (MCV) (107.66+_7.75 fl), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) (33.31+_4.07 pg), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) (30.98+_3.44 g/dl), red cell distribution width (RDW) (17.01+_2.17%) whereas, in the latter group with α-thalassaemia, it was (14.79+_2.90 g/dl); (5.09+_0.77 x 1012/l); (49.7+_7.40%); (97.29+_13.8 fl); (29.74+_11.80 pg); (30.39+_3.6 g/dl), and (18.09+_2.56%) respectively. DNA sequencing of samples with abnormal haemoglobin could validate the CBC and HLPC interpretations in all cases. Conclusion: This is the first study comparing the hemoglobin and red cell indices in the cord blood from newborn Omani subjects with those from other countries in the region, showing comparable results to those seen in Saudi neonates. The study also validates the CBC and HPLC interpretations of the cord blood red cell indices in the Omani neonate. The incidence of α-thalassaemia diagnosed by the presence of Hb Barts in cord blood of neonates was 48.42%.

The Relationship Of Peer Norms, Connectedness With Glb Community, Minority Stress, And Condom Use Self-Efficacy With Safer Sex Behaviors In Men Who Have Sex With Men, Rebecca Adele Aycock Oct 2011

The Relationship Of Peer Norms, Connectedness With Glb Community, Minority Stress, And Condom Use Self-Efficacy With Safer Sex Behaviors In Men Who Have Sex With Men, Rebecca Adele Aycock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Even though there have been multiple initiatives orchestrated to educate MSM (Men Who Have Sex with Men) about engaging in safer sex practices, many still engage in unsafe sexual practices(Hospers, Molenaar, and Kok, 1994; Seal et al., 2000). There is a substantial amount of research supporting the role perceived peer norms and self-efficacy play in facilitating and individual's sexual behaviors (Hamilton & Mahalik, 2009; Kelly et al., 1995; Miner, Peterson Welles, Jacoby, & Roser, 2010; Peterson & Bakeman, 2006; Peterson, Rothenberg, Kraft, Beeker, & Trotter, 2009). Furthermore, Hamilton and Mahalik (2009) found that minority stress signifcantly interacted with perceived social …

In Vitro Assessment Of Biomaterial-Induced Remodeling Of Subchondral And Cancellous Bone For The Early Intervention Of Joint Degeneration With Focus On The Spinal Disc, Jonathan Dempsey Mccanless Oct 2011

In Vitro Assessment Of Biomaterial-Induced Remodeling Of Subchondral And Cancellous Bone For The Early Intervention Of Joint Degeneration With Focus On The Spinal Disc, Jonathan Dempsey Mccanless

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Osteoarthritis-associated pain of the spinal disc, knee, and hip derives from degeneration of cartilagenous tissues in these joints. Traditional therapies have focused on these cartilage (and disc specific nucleus pulposus) changes as a means of treatment through tissue grafting, regenerative synthetic implants, non-regenerative space filling implants, arthroplasty, and arthrodesis. Although such approaches may seem apparent upon initial consideration of joint degeneration, tissue pathology has shown changes in the underlying bone and vascular bed precede the onset of cartilaginous changes. It is hypothesized that these changes precedent joint degeneration and as such may provide a route for early prevention. The current …

Blunt Cerebrovascular Injuries A Review Of The Literature, Abdullah Al-Harthy, Alreem Al-Hinai, Khalifa Al-Qadhi, Hani

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Blunt cerebrovascular injuries (BCVI) have been a topic of interest to many researchers worldwide as evidenced by the vast amount of available literature. The interest in these rare injuries is probably due to the significant possibility of mortality and morbidity amongst patients who sustain them, when the employment of radiological screening methods could prevent such an outcome. Recognition of these injuries is the most important step towards prevention of adverse outcomes. We present a comprehensive review of the literature regarding the mechanism of injury, imaging, management, and complications of BCVI. Articles were identified through a search of MEDLINE and the …

Umbilical Cord Blood Banking And Transplantation : A Short Review, Salam Alkindi, David Dennison Oct 2011

Umbilical Cord Blood Banking And Transplantation : A Short Review, Salam Alkindi, David Dennison

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

It is more than 20 years since the first cord blood transplant (CBT) was performed, following the realisation that cord blood (CB), which is normally wasted, is rich in progenitor cells and capable of rescuing haematopoiesis. Since then it has been appreciated that CB is rich in stem cells, and has many other features not the least of which is its ability to rescue the transplanted patient without a rigid need for full human lymphocyte antigen (HLA) compatibility. Also it is easily accessible, relatively free from infections and poses no medical risk to the donor. However, the quantity of the …
