The Impact Of An Enacted Social Support Training Intervention On Worklife Interaction And Stress In A Sample Of Working Adults, Justin P. Boren, Jess K. Alberts

Communication

The present investigation explores utilizes an enacted social support intervention among a group of working adults. Reductions in psychological and physiological stress were hypothesized to occur following the experimental intervention. Participants (N = 46) were all full time staff members at a large university and were randomly assigned to treatment or wait-list control groups. Treatment group members attended two 90 minute enacted social support meetings over the course of four weeks. Psychological (perceived stress and worklife conflict) and physiological (salivary cortisol) data were collected at both pretest and posttest periods. Results did not support the research hypotheses; however, a research …

Sticks And Stones: Iied And Speech After Snyder V. Phelps, Heath Hooper Nov 2011

Sticks And Stones: Iied And Speech After Snyder V. Phelps, Heath Hooper

Missouri Law Review

On March 3, 2006, Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder died while serving a tour of duty in Iraq. After hearing of his funeral, members of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church attended and protested the Maryland ceremony bearing graphic photos and signs declaring "Thank God for IEDs" and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers." The church members did so in reflection of their religious belief that God has doomed America and its military missions because of the country's tolerance for homosexuality. Following the protest, Matthew Snyder's father, Albert Snyder, sued the Westboro Baptist Church for a variety of civil wrongs, including intentional …

Opening The Broom Closet: Recognizing The Religious Rights Of Wiccans, Witches, And Other Neo-Pagans, Bradford S. Stewart Nov 2011

Opening The Broom Closet: Recognizing The Religious Rights Of Wiccans, Witches, And Other Neo-Pagans, Bradford S. Stewart

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Religious freedom is a core component of our nation and one of the most widely known and accepted constitutional guarantees provided by the First Amendment. No prior civilization had adopted a national policy that tolerated various religious beliefs while simultaneously refusing to endorse or promote a national religion. Considering the fundamental backdrop of religious tolerance, it might seem unimaginable that a skilled medical technician could be fired from her job, an alleged victim of sexual abuse could have her credibility undermined in a court of law, or a mother could lose custody of her child, under the color of legality, …

Laboratory Diagnosis Of Clostridium Difficile Infection: Can Molecular Amplification Methods Move Us Out Of Uncertainty?, Fred C. Tenover, Ellen Jo Baron, Lance R. Peterson, David Persing Nov 2011

Laboratory Diagnosis Of Clostridium Difficile Infection: Can Molecular Amplification Methods Move Us Out Of Uncertainty?, Fred C. Tenover, Ellen Jo Baron, Lance R. Peterson, David Persing

Biology Faculty Publications

The laboratory diagnosis of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) continues to be challenging. Recent guidelines from professional societies in the United States note that enzyme immunoassays for toxins A and B do not have adequate sensitivity to be used alone for detecting CDI, yet the optimal method for diagnosing this infection remains unclear. Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) that target chromosomal toxin genes (usually the toxin B gene, tcdB) show high sensitivity and specificity, provide rapid results, and are amenable to both batch and on-demand testing, but these tests were not universally recommended for routine use in the recent guidelines. …

Understanding Student Disaffection Through The Lens Of Alternative Education, Gwen C. Marchand Nov 2011

Understanding Student Disaffection Through The Lens Of Alternative Education, Gwen C. Marchand

Policy Briefs and Reports

This partnership project between UNLV and Clark County School District’s Student Support Services Division (SSSD) focuses on identifying risk and protective factors leading to student disaffection and placement in alternative education. Alternative education students are primarily male, with an overrepresentation of minority and special education designations, and who face increased odds of school drop-out. This project will use a mixed-methods approach to chart student trajectories toward alternative education and explore student educational experiences through a motivational and emotional lens. The partnership should result in increased potential for data-driven decision making by SSSD staff and scholarship opportunities for UNLV.

Corporate And Business Law, Laurence V. Parker Nov 2011

Corporate And Business Law, Laurence V. Parker

University of Richmond Law Review

In the 2011 session, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 2358, Benefit Corporations, to be codified as article 22 (the "Benefit Corporations Article") of the Virginia Stock Corporation Act ("VSCA"). The Benefit Corporations Article is largely based on legislation prepared in other states and allows a Virginia corporation to elect in its articles of incorporation to be treated as a "benefit corporation." These for-profit corporations are required to pursue not only profitability but also a general public benefit and, if one so elects, one or more specific public benefits. In Section II of this article, the author discusses the …

Haploinsufficiency of TBX1, encoding a T-box transcription factor, is largely responsible for the physical malformations in velo-cardio-facial /DiGeorge/22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) patients. Cardiovascular malformations in these patients are highly variable, raising the question as to whether DNA variations in the TBX1 locus on the remaining allele of 22q11.2 could be responsible. To test this, a large sample size is needed. The TBX1 gene was sequenced in 360 consecutive 22q11DS patients. Rare and common variations were identified. We did not detect enrichment in rare SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) number in those with or without a congenital heart defect. One exception …

Characterization Of The Drosophila Slowpoke Binding Protein (Slob) Promoter, Amanda L. Sheldon, Lauren Manderfield, Irwin B. Levitan

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Drosophila SLOWPOKE (SLO) is a voltage and calcium dependent, large conductance potassium channel important for action potential repolarization, neuronal excitability, neurotransmitter release, and hormone secretion. SLO binding protein (SLOB) binds to and modulates SLO activity. We have shown previously that modulation of SLO by SLOB has profound effects on SLO channel currents, synaptic transmisison, and metabolism. Multiple isoforms of SLOB exist and are encoded by multiple transcripts; the isoforms are named based on their predicted protein molecular weights, in kilodaltons. In the Drosophila brain, SLOB57/51 proteins are expressed especially prominently in insulin producing neurons of the pars intercerebralis, while SLOB71/65 …
