Discussion:

  • Although differences in HR and the JT interval were statistically significant in patients who received appropriate shock vs. those who did not, these differences are not clinically meaningful
  • We did not identify any clinical predictors of early vs. late ICD shocks
  • These data suggest that we may not be able to improve on current guidelines for patient selection for ICD implantation.

A History Of Low Back Pain Associates With Altered Electromyographic Activation Patterns In Response To Perturbations Of Standing Balance, Jesse V. Jacobs, Sharon M. Henry, Stephanie L. Jones, Juvena R. Hitt, Janice Y. Bunn Nov 2011

A History Of Low Back Pain Associates With Altered Electromyographic Activation Patterns In Response To Perturbations Of Standing Balance, Jesse V. Jacobs, Sharon M. Henry, Stephanie L. Jones, Juvena R. Hitt, Janice Y. Bunn

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

People with a history of low back pain (LBP) exhibit altered responses to postural perturbations, and the central neural control underlying these changes in postural responses remains unclear. To characterize more thoroughly the change in muscle activation patterns of people with LBP in response to a perturbation of standing balance, and to gain insight into the influence of early- vs. late-phase postural responses (differentiated by estimates of voluntary reaction times), this study evaluated the intermuscular patterns of electromyographic (EMG) activations from 24 people with and 21 people without a history of chronic, recurrent LBP in response to 12 directions of …

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Non-Homogenous Poisson Process (NHPP), also known as the Power Law process (PLP) or the Weibull Process, is used to evaluate the effectiveness of a given treatment for Stage I & II ductal breast cancer patients. The behavior of the shape parameter of the intensity function is examined to evaluate the response of a given treatment with respect to its effectiveness for a cancer subject.

Higher Order C(T, P, S) Crossover Designs, James F. Reed Iii Nov 2011

Higher Order C(T, P, S) Crossover Designs, James F. Reed Iii

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A crossover study is a repeated measures design in which each subject is randomly assigned to a sequence of treatments, including at least two treatments. The most damning characteristic of a crossover study is the potential of a carryover effect of one treatment to the next period. To solve the first-order crossover problem characteristic in the classic AB|BA design, the design must be extended. One alternative uses additional treatment sequences in two periods; a second option is to add a third period and repeat one of the treatments. Assuming a traditional model that specifies a first-order carryover effect, this study …

Volunteer Satisfaction And Intent To Remain: An Analysis Of Contributing Factors Among Professional Golf Event Volunteers, Gina Pauline Nov 2011

Volunteer Satisfaction And Intent To Remain: An Analysis Of Contributing Factors Among Professional Golf Event Volunteers, Gina Pauline

Falk College Research Center

Sport events are increasingly reliant on episodic volunteers for the successful delivery of an event. As there continues to exist a surge in the organization of sporting events coupled with the demand for volunteers, event organizers must concern themselves with utilizing the appropriate recruitment and retention strategies. In an effort to do this, one must understand the points of satisfaction for volunteers as well as factors influencing their future intentions to volunteer. While there exists a plethora of research to understand the motivation of volunteers, exploring the antecedents of volunteer satisfaction as well as intent to remain has been limited. …

The Benefits Of Opt-In Federalism, Brendan S. Maher Nov 2011

The Benefits Of Opt-In Federalism, Brendan S. Maher

Faculty Scholarship

The Affordable Care Act (“ACA”) is a controversial and historic statute that mandates people make insurance bargains. Unacknowledged is an innovative mechanism ACA uses to select the law that governs those bargains: opt-in federalism.

Opt-in federalism – in which individuals choose between federal and state rules – is a promising theoretical means to make and choose law. This Article explains why, and concludes that the appeal of opt-in federalism is independent of ACA. Whatever the statute’s constitutional fate, future policymakers should consider opt-in federalist approaches to answer fundamental but exceedingly difficult questions of health and retirement law.

Placemarks : Environments And Aesthetics, Department Of Visual Studies, Lingnan University

Conference Exhibition

Preface

Visual Studies at Lingnan University answers the growing interest in Arts & Humanities research with relevance to society by emphasizing environmenal aesthetics, Chinese art, Art and Well-being, and "research expression." The exhibition "placemarks" is an example of research expression, for each of the works on display is a response to a clear question: "What Environment Do We Want?" This question defines the focus of the conference to which the exhibition, and the exchanges that it facilitates, contribute by means other than traditional forms of scholarly talk.

In organizing the conference titled "What Environment Do We Want? Environmental Aesthetics and …

Interferons As Therapeutic Agents In Infectious Diseases, Mckenzie C. Ferguson, Scott Bergman, Cathy Santanello Nov 2011

Interferons As Therapeutic Agents In Infectious Diseases, Mckenzie C. Ferguson, Scott Bergman, Cathy Santanello

Pharmacy Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This article explains the rationale for development of interferons as therapeutic agents, and describes commercial products available today. It also provides a summary of studies that have been performed with interferons for use as exogenous biological response modifiers in viral infections. Overall, the best data exist for treatment of viral hepatitis B and C, for which interferons are a cornerstone of therapy. Although infections with human papillomavirus and common cold viruses sometimes respond favorably to interferons, their outcomes are far from ideal. Finally, the role of interferons as vaccine adjuvants is still being explored but could be promising.

Marital Status And Mortality Among Middle Age And Elderly Men And Women In Urban Shanghai, Puthiery Va, Wan-Shui Yang, Sarah Nechuta, Wong-Ho Chow, Hui Cai, Gong Yang, Shan Gao, Yu-Tang Gao, Wei Zheng, Xiao-Ou Shu, Yong-Bing Xiang

Peer Reviewed Articles

Background: Previous studies have suggested that marital status is associated with mortality, but few studies have been conducted in China where increasing aging population and divorce rates may have major impact on health and total mortality.

Methods: We examined the association of marital status with mortality using data from the Shanghai Women’s Health Study (1996–2009) and Shanghai Men’s Health Study (2002–2009), two population-based cohort studies of 74,942 women aged 40–70 years and 61,500 men aged 40–74 years at the study enrollment. Deaths were identified by biennial home visits and record linkage with the vital statistics registry. Marital status was categorized …

Linking Impulsivity And Inhibitory Control Using Manual And Oculomotor Response Inhibition Tasks, Walter Roberts, Mark T. Fillmore, Richard Milich Nov 2011

Linking Impulsivity And Inhibitory Control Using Manual And Oculomotor Response Inhibition Tasks, Walter Roberts, Mark T. Fillmore, Richard Milich

Psychology Faculty Publications

Separate cognitive processes govern the inhibitory control of manual and oculomotor movements. Despite this fundamental distinction, little is known about how these inhibitory control processes relate to more complex domains of behavioral functioning. This study sought to determine how these inhibitory control mechanisms relate to broadly defined domains of impulsive behavior. Thirty adults with attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 28 comparison adults performed behavioral measures of inhibitory control and completed impulsivity inventories. Results suggest that oculomotor inhibitory control, but not manual inhibitory control, is related to specific domains of self-reported impulsivity. This finding was limited to the ADHD group; no …

Understanding The Evolving Roles Of Improvement–Oriented High School Teachers In Gilgit-Baltistan, Takbir Ali

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

In this paper the author presents a framework for understanding how improvement-oriented high school teachers’ accounts of change experiences portray their evolving roles as change agents in school reform. The data on which this paper is based come from a one-year long in-depth study (doctoral thesis research project) in which the author set out to investigate how improvement-oriented teachers pursue important changes in the realm of classroom, school and community; how the teachers-initiated changes can be characterized; and how the teachers’ roles evolve with their change practices. The researcher employed qualitative case study methodology, using in-depth interviews, classroom observations, post-observation …

Chromosome Missegregation In Human Cells Arises Through Specific Types Of Kinetochore–Microtubule Attachment Errors, Sarah L. Thompson, Duane A. Compton Nov 2011

Chromosome Missegregation In Human Cells Arises Through Specific Types Of Kinetochore–Microtubule Attachment Errors, Sarah L. Thompson, Duane A. Compton

Dartmouth Scholarship

Most solid tumors are aneuploid, and many missegregate chromosomes at high rates in a phenomenon called chromosomal instability (CIN). CIN reflects the erosion of mitotic fidelity, and it correlates with poor patient prognosis and drug resistance. The most common mechanism causing CIN is the persistence of improper kinetochore–microtubule attachments called merotely. Chromosomes with merotelic kinetochores often manifest as lagging chromosomes in anaphase, suggesting that lagging chromosomes fail to segregate properly. However, it remains unknown whether the lagging chromosomes observed in anaphase segregate to the correct or incorrect daughter cell. To address this question, we tracked the segregation of a single …

Test Performance And Study Breaks, Lori Mcginley Nov 2011

Test Performance And Study Breaks, Lori Mcginley

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

As the culture of American education changes, recess time is declining in favor of instruction time. An important question, however, is whether this shift is truly going to yield the best learning outcomes. The purpose of the present study is to examine the effect of taking a break, both mental and physical, on test performance. Seventy college students were tested on their learning of a list of phobias that they had studied in one of three conditions: no break, mental break, and physical break. It was predicted that participants would perform better on a subsequent memory task when a break …

Sustainability Leader Competencies: A Grounded Theory Study, Pamela G. Schwalb Nov 2011

Sustainability Leader Competencies: A Grounded Theory Study, Pamela G. Schwalb

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this critical qualitative study was to develop a theory of the competencies of a sustainability leader, grounded in research. A sustainability leader is generally described as an individual who creates profit for his/her stakeholders, while protecting the environment and improving the lives of those for whom he/she impacts as a result of his/her leadership. Nearly 60 individuals familiar with sustainability were asked to characterize an effective leader of a sustainability initiative or a sustainability organization.

The study revealed there is more than one way to be a sustainability leader—different paths can result in decisions and actions that …
