Central Venous Pressure And Pulmonary Capillary Wedge Pressure, Tony S Ma, Biykem Bozkurt, David Paniagua, Biswajit Kar, Kumudha Ramasubbu, Carl F Rothe Jan 2011

Central Venous Pressure And Pulmonary Capillary Wedge Pressure, Tony S Ma, Biykem Bozkurt, David Paniagua, Biswajit Kar, Kumudha Ramasubbu, Carl F Rothe

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

Heart-failure phenotypes include pulmonary and systemic venous congestion. Traditional heart-failure classification systems include the Forrester hemodynamic subsets, which use 2 indices: pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) and cardiac index. We hypothesized that changes in PCWP and central venous pressure (CVP), and in the phenotypes of heart failure, might be better evaluated by cardiovascular modeling. Therefore, we developed a lumped-parameter cardiovascular model and analyzed forms of heart failure in which the right and left ventricles failed disproportionately (discordant ventricular failure) versus equally (concordant failure). At least 10 modeling analyses were carried out to the equilibrium state. Acute discordant pump failure was …

Valery Forbes Publications

Current measures used to estimate the risks of toxic chemicals are not relevant to the goals of the environmental protection process, and thus ecological risk assessment (ERA) is not used as extensively as it should be as a basis for cost-effective management of environmental resources. Appropriate population models can provide a powerful basis for expressing ecological risks that better inform the environmental management process and thus that are more likely to be used by managers. Here we provide at least five reasons why population modeling should play an important role in bridging the gap between what we measure and what …

Predicting Child Safety: The Effect Of Custodial Grandparents' Depression, Home Safety Knowledge, And Gender., Danielle K. Nadorff Jan 2011

Predicting Child Safety: The Effect Of Custodial Grandparents' Depression, Home Safety Knowledge, And Gender., Danielle K. Nadorff

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During the past twenty years, an increasing percentage of grandparents have assumed the responsibility for raising their grandchildren, and there are currently over 2.5 million custodial grandparents in the United States (Census, 2003). Significant research has examined the effects of caregiving on custodial grandparents, and found that custodial grandparents experience decreased well-being, and report more stressors than their peers (Hayslip, Kaminski & Earnheart, 2005). One area that has not been well-examined is the effect of being raised by grandparents on grandchild well-being, particularly injury prevention. The safety of these home environments is of importance, as unintentional injury is the leading …

Parental Influence On Physical Activity Of 7 To 9 Year Olds., Janie Marie Leary Jan 2011

Parental Influence On Physical Activity Of 7 To 9 Year Olds., Janie Marie Leary

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity every day for children. These recommendations are based on the evidence that physical activity has health benefits beyond weight control. Despite these benefits, most children are not taking part in the recommended levels of physical activity. Understanding factors influencing children's physical activity is important to developing successful intervention programs. Intrapersonal and interpersonal influences were found to have the greatest impact on child physical activity. The extent to which each factor predicts physical activity as children age is less understood. Furthermore, not every developmental age …

Factors Affecting Growth And Condition Of Stocked Rainbow Trout In Eastern Washington Lakes, Tamara Knudson Jan 2011

Factors Affecting Growth And Condition Of Stocked Rainbow Trout In Eastern Washington Lakes, Tamara Knudson

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Rainbow trout growth and condition were examined in 17 ecologically diverse lakes from which physical, limnological, and biological parameters were sampled. Parameters were correlated with rainbow trout growth and condition to identify factor(s) that predict rainbow trout growth and condition across eastern Washington lakes stocked annually with rainbow trout fry. We tested the hypothesis Ho: the environmental variables examined do not predict rainbow trout growth and condition. Data were natural log transformed for better fit, and were analyzed by season. Several models were identified using stepwise multiple regression analysis and general linear modeling which significantly predicted trout growth or condition …

Factors Predicting Physical Activity Among Older Thais Living In Low Socioeconomic Urban Communities, Phachongchit Kraithaworn, Yupapin Sirapo-Ngam, Noppawan Piaseu, Dechavudh Nityasuddhi, Kimberlee A. Gretebeck

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

This study was conducted to determine if specific factors (physical activity self-efficacy, sense of community, social support, perceived physical and mental health, and neighborhood environment and facilities) predicted physical activity among 258 older Thais living in six registered, low-socioeconomic, urban communities across metropolitan Bangkok. The theoretical model was based on integrated concepts from Pender’s Health Promotion Model and the Social Ecological Model. The hypothesized model was tested using path analysis.

The final model explained 33%, 51% and 22% of the variance in physical activity, physical activity self-efficacy and sense of community, respectively. Physical activity self-efficacy was the most powerful predictor …

Metabolic Syndrome And Its Associations With Psychological Distress And Subclinical Cardiovascular Disease Among Police Officers, Tara Autumn Hartley Jan 2011

Metabolic Syndrome And Its Associations With Psychological Distress And Subclinical Cardiovascular Disease Among Police Officers, Tara Autumn Hartley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Police officers are a vital part of every community in the U.S. Officers are routinely exposed to numerous types of stressors, including traumatic events, shift work and organizational issues. The impact of this exposure can lead to chronic physical and psychological health problems. Police officers have been reported to have higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Previous studies have found associations between work stress and CVD, and this association may be mediated by the metabolic syndrome (MetSyn). MetSyn is a clustering of metabolic abnormalities, including abdominal obesity, hypertension, glucose intolerance and dyslipidemia, that has been associated with CVD and Type …

Water Gas Shift Reaction Catalysis Promoted By Selective Sorption Of Carbon Dioxide: Microreactor Experiments, Ramanjaneyulu Katta Jan 2011

Water Gas Shift Reaction Catalysis Promoted By Selective Sorption Of Carbon Dioxide: Microreactor Experiments, Ramanjaneyulu Katta

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Production of hydrogen via the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction normally requires multiple reaction steps followed by CO2 separation. However, in-situ removal of CO2 via the carbonation reaction between CaO and CO2 provides the opportunity to combine WGS and separation reactions into a single unit. Consequently, the need for heat exchangers between catalyst beds as well as the absorption and stripping units for CO2 removal can be eliminated.;In this study, a commercial high-temperature-shift (HTS) catalyst, Fe 2O3/Cr2O3/CuO is used. Calcium oxide (CaO) and calcium oxide incorporated with calcium aluminate (Ca12Al 14O33) are used as sorbents for CO2 capture. The CaO/Ca12Al14O33 sorbent …

Go-Ahead Men: Yankee Westerners Test Masculine Bonds In The Early American Republic, Charlotte Cathy Rodabaugh Jan 2011

Go-Ahead Men: Yankee Westerners Test Masculine Bonds In The Early American Republic, Charlotte Cathy Rodabaugh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Colonial New England fathers normally launched sons' careers, often aided by other male relatives. However, economic developments in the early American republic rendered sons' expectations less sure even as Americans began celebrating the concept of the self-made man and pressured young men to distinguish themselves. Even worse, they asserted that success or failure signaled more about the man than about his particular circumstances. This study delves into some close male relationships through which were negotiated these tensions between cultural expectations and reality. Scholars describe the rise of a distinctly Northern, middle-class manhood, but this project isolates how the relationships that …

Theoretical Model Of Nurse Outcomes: Associations Among Nurse Characteristics, Psychological Empowerment, Generation, Quality Of Work Life, And Rn Job Satisfaction, Amy M. Sparks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background: Currently, nurse researchers have yet to clearly understand all of the factors related to registered nurse job satisfaction. Ruggiero (2005) posits that 62-67% of the variance in RN job satisfaction remains unexplained in nursing literature. Nurse characteristics, generation, psychological empowerment, and quality of work life have been found to impact RN job satisfaction. The literature lacks a comprehensive conceptual framework, which theoretically links each of these influential factors to RN job satisfaction.;Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative influence of nurses' characteristics, psychological empowerment, generation, and quality of work life on RN job satisfaction. Another …

The Intrusiveness Of Sensor-Suit Components On The Postures Associated With Performing Repeated Whole-Body Manual Lifting Tasks, Lauren Amanda Visnansky

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ergonomics can be defined as the responsibility to ensure that the demands of a job do not exceed the capabilities of a worker (Garg, Chaffin, and Herrin, 1978). Evaluating physiological demands on workers, particularly individuals performing highly varied tasks or monitoring their work in the field, can be a complex problem. Using on-person sensors to record kinematic and physiological measurements throughout extended is one proposed method by which to collect data necessary to evaluate the demands placed on the workers. In order to assess the efficacy of the data that would be collected, it is critical to evaluate the intrusive …

De Novo Asymmetric Syntheses Of Bioactive Natural Products And Carbohydrate Motifs, Yalan Xing Jan 2011

De Novo Asymmetric Syntheses Of Bioactive Natural Products And Carbohydrate Motifs, Yalan Xing

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

De novo asymmetric syntheses of daumone I-1 and the fluorescent analog have been described. This route took advantage of the Noyori asymmetric hydrogenation of acetyl furan and alkynyl ketone, the Pd-catalyzed glycosylation and various post-glycosylation transformations to finish the total synthesis of Daumone I-1, which provided materials for mechanism of action studies.;In an effort to mimics natures use of rare sugars in the synthesis of biologically important natural products (e.g., the carbohydrate portion of Daumone I-1), the O'Doherty group has been interested in developing new methods for practical and stereoselective synthesis. As part of these efforts, a concise synthesis of …

Leadership Development For Today’S Ktunaxa Youth: Command Structure Versus The Crazy Dog Society, Christopher Horsethief

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Block (2008) opens his book on the structure of belonging with the statement, "[S]ocial fabric of community is formed from an expanding shared sense of belonging...shaped by the idea that only when we are connected and care for the well-being of the whole that a civil and democratic society is created" (p. 9). The concept of belonging has been addressed directly in servant-leadership studies, including belonging to community or organization (Ba Banutu-Gomez, 2004 ), belonging and resiliency (Wheatley & Kellner-Rogers, 1998), belonging through a sharing of humanity with followership (Birkenmeier, Carson, & Carson, 2003). It can also be argued that …

The Connection Between Servant-Leadership And Service-Learning In The Context Of Higher Education, Heather L. Veeder

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In Vaill's (1998) forward to The Power of Servant Leadership, a challenge is offered to educational institutions: to increase the "sheer number of younger men and women who will be helped to develop as servant-leaders" (p. xiii). Vaill furthers this challenge by pointing out, "We in higher education know that only by accident are we producing visionary young men and women who aspire to leadership, to the extent we are producing them at all. We don't like to admit it. Greenleaf has found us out" (p. xiii). In response, one avenue that may assist in the intentional development of servant-leaders …

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Functional properties of large conductance Ca2+ activated potassium (BK) channels are determined by complex alternative splicing of the Kcnma1 gene encoding the alpha pore-forming subunit. Inclusion of the STREX exon in a C-terminal splice site is dynamically regulated and confers enhanced Ca2+ sensitivity and channel inhibition via cAMP-dependent phosphorylation. Here, we describe a real time quantitative PCR (qPCR) approach to investigate relative changes in the expression of STREX and ZERO splice variants using a newly designed set of probes and primers for TaqMan-based qPCR analysis of cDNA from the rat dentate gyrus at different time points following pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus. …

Unpacking Faculty Engagement: The Types Of Activities Faculty Members Report As Publicly Engaged Scholarship During Promotion And Tenure, Chris R. Glass, Diane M. Doberneck, John H. Schweitzer

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

While a growing body of scholarship has focused on the personal, professional, and organizational factors that influence faculty members’ involvement in publicly engaged scholarship, the nature and scope of faculty publicly engaged scholarship itself has remained largely unexplored. What types of activities are faculty members involved in as publicly engaged scholarship? How does their involvement vary by demographic, type of faculty appointment, or college grouping? To explore these questions, researchers conducted a quantitative content analysis of 173 promotion and tenure documents from a research-intensive, land-grant, Carnegie Classified Community Engagement university and found statistically significant differences for the variables age, number …
