Psychological Functioning In Adulthood: A Self-Efficacy Analysis, Daniele Artistico, Jane M. Berry, Justin Black, Dan Cervone, Courtney Lee, Heather Orom

Psychology Faculty Publications

In the first edition of this handbook, we laid the foundation for a self-efficacy approach to understanding learning in adulthood. We examined self-efficacy applications to learning in adulthood from two broad-based theoretical perspectives: KAPA (knowledge and appraisal personality architecture; Cervone, 2004a) and SOC (selective optimization with compensation, Baltes, Lindenberger, & Staudinger, 2006). Both perspectives emphasize the dynamic interplay between dispositional, motivational, situational, and developmental contexts for successful functioning and adaptation in life. In this edition, we build upon earlier claims with new evidence regarding the central role of self-efficacy to adult development, aging, and well-being in memory, health, work, and …

Palliative Care For People Living With Hiv/Aids In Uganda: An Investigation Of Patients & Caregiver’S Outcome And Professional Perspectives, Wesley Too Jan 2011

Palliative Care For People Living With Hiv/Aids In Uganda: An Investigation Of Patients & Caregiver’S Outcome And Professional Perspectives, Wesley Too

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Background: Although antiretroviral treatment is expanding in sub-Saharan Africa, the World Health Organization advocates for integration of palliative care with HAART because pain, other distressing symptoms and complex psychosocial challenges persist throughout the HIV trajectory. Palliative care improves the outcome for patients with HIV and may complement antiretroviral treatment by increasing adherence through better management of side effects from the treatment, providing patient and family-centred holistic care, and giving end-of-life care when necessary. However, integrating what have become two disciplines is challenging. Aim: To study the implications for palliative care provision in the context of changing policy to universal access …

Postoperative Sensitivity In Class V Composite Restorations: Comparing Soft Start Vs. Constant Curing Modes Of Led., Fahad Umer, Frahan Raza Khan Jan 2011

Postoperative Sensitivity In Class V Composite Restorations: Comparing Soft Start Vs. Constant Curing Modes Of Led., Fahad Umer, Frahan Raza Khan

Department of Surgery Docs

Background: One of the major disadvantages associated with using composites is polymerization shrinkage, stresses are generated at the margins, and if these stresses exceed the bond strength, microleakage occurs at the tooth restoration interface which causes ingress of cariogenic bacteria, post-operative sensitivity, and secondary caries. LED offers several curing modes: constant cure, ramped cure, and soft start cure. It is claimed that soft start polymerization mode produces less polymerization shrinkage and consequently less postoperative sensitivity. Objective:To compare the postoperative sensitivity in Class V composite restorations using soft start and constant LED curing modes. Materials and

Methods:

Using the appropriate …

Fatal Familial Insomnia: An Overview, Eric Schools Jan 2011

Fatal Familial Insomnia: An Overview, Eric Schools

Senior Honors Theses

Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) is an insidious prion disorder that tends to manifest itself as a patient reaches middle age following a pattern consistent with autosomal dominance. A wide range of symptoms are represented, many related to motor function and autonomic regulation, but degeneration of certain areas of the thalamus is present in every case. Genetically, the condition is transmitted only within families, but it has been demonstrated by Jackson et al. (2009) that FFI can be transmitted by exposure to/ingestion of infected material. A number of groundbreaking studies are discussed. These include the initial documentation of FFI as a …

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Studying vector populations of the Ixodes scapularis tick is of major importance in New Jersey, an endemic area of Lyme disease. This species of tick is a vector for various disease pathogens including the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi. This study focused on Ixodes scapularis tick surveillance at the New Jersey School of Conservation, in Sussex County, New Jersey. Collection of host-seeking ticks began in July 2009 and has continued until December of 2010, by drag-cloth sampling in order to monitor tick abundances of all life-cycle stages.

In 2010 relative abundances for larvae and nymphal stages declined as …

Methionine-35 Of Aβ(1-42): Importance For Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer Disease, D. Allan Butterfield, Rukhsana Sultana Jan 2011

Methionine-35 Of Aβ(1-42): Importance For Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer Disease, D. Allan Butterfield, Rukhsana Sultana

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Alzheimer disease (AD) is an age-related progressive neurodegenerative disorder. This devastating disease is characterized by the presence of senile plaques (SP), neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), and loss of synapses. Amyloid beta-peptide 1–42 (Aβ(1–42)) is the main component of SP and is pivotal to AD pathogenesis. Brain of subjects with AD and arguably its earliest manifestation, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), demonstrate increased levels of oxidative stress markers. Our laboratory combined these two aspects of AD and MCI and proposed the Aβ(1–42)-associated free radical oxidative stress hypothesis to explain oxidative stress under which the MCI and AD brain exist …

Implementing Routine Provider-Initiated Hiv Testing In Public Health Care Facilities In Kenya: A Qualitative Descriptive Study Of Nurses' Experiences, Catrin Evans, Eunice Ndirangu Jan 2011

Implementing Routine Provider-Initiated Hiv Testing In Public Health Care Facilities In Kenya: A Qualitative Descriptive Study Of Nurses' Experiences, Catrin Evans, Eunice Ndirangu

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Routine 'provider-initiated testing and counselling' (PITC) for HIV has been implemented amidst concern over how consent, confidentiality and counselling (the 3C’s) can be maintained in underresourced health care settings. In Kenya, PITC has been rolled out since 2005, HIV prevalence is 7.1% and over 86% of adults have not been tested. Kenyan nurses are the main cadre implementing PITC but little is known about their experiences of incorporating HIV testing into everyday practice and the challenges faced in maintaining the 3’Cs within their work environments. This study aimed to explore these issues and adopted a qualitative multi-method design using a …

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

In addition to the HLA locus, six genetic risk factors for primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) have been identified in recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS). To identify additional loci, we carried out a GWAS using 1,840 cases from the UK PBC Consortium and 5,163 UK population controls as part of the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium 3 (WTCCC3). We followed up 28 loci in an additional UK cohort of 620 PBC cases and 2,514 population controls. We identified 12 new susceptibility loci (at a genome-wide significance level of P < 5 × 10⁻⁸) and replicated all previously associated loci. We identified three further new loci in a meta-analysis of data from our study and previously published GWAS results. New candidate genes include STAT4, DENND1B, CD80, IL7R, CXCR5, TNFRSF1A, CLEC16A and NFKB1. This study has considerably expanded our knowledge of the genetic architecture of PBC

Needs, Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Help, And Preferred Sources Of Help Among Emirati College Students, Fatima R. Al-Darmaki

Journal for International Counselor Education

This investigation, conducted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), examined Emirati college students’ needs, help-seeking attitudes, preference for source of help, and perceptions of counseling services offered on campus. Most participants reported moderate levels of personal, academic, career, and interpersonal needs, although results varied along gender lines. Overall, participants displayed slightly positive attitudes toward seeking professional help, yet showed negative attitudes toward interpersonal openness, although this, too, differed by gender. Participants preferred non-professional sources of help, such as family and friends. Participants understood counseling services on campus to refer to academic-related services. Findings are discussed within the UAE cultural context.
