The Down Low And The Sexuality Of Race, Brad E. Stone
The Down Low And The Sexuality Of Race, Brad E. Stone
Philosophy Faculty Works
There has been much interest in the phenomenon called "the Down Low," in which "otherwise heterosexual" African American men have sex with other black men. This essay explores the biopolitics at play in the media’s curiosity about the Down Low. The Down Low serves as a critical, transgressive heterotopia that reveals the codetermination of racism, sexism, and heterosexism in black male sexuality.

In the article, the author discusses the issues involving the ethics of fetal surgery. He cites the works of scholars Frank A. Chervenak and Laurence B. McCullough on the ethical questions on fetal surgery. The positions of such pro-abortion individuals as Peter Singer, Michael Tooley and David Boonin on the issue of fetal homicide are also cited.

Congress's Inability To Solve Standing Problems, Heather Elliott

Some critics of the Supreme Court's restrictive Article III standing doctrine knowing that the Court is unlikely to change course have argued that Congress could take steps to expand standing to sue Yet no scholar has systematically examined Congress's options in conferring standing This Article fills that gap demonstrating that Congress's power is far more limited than has previously been recognizedCongress has three options First Congress may enact statutes that define injuryinfact causation and redress under Article III establishing standing for certain classes of plaintiffs But this approach will fail if the Court finds such statutes unconstitutional and the Court's …

Investing In Kids: Early Childhood Programs And Local Economic Development, Timothy J. Bartik
Investing In Kids: Early Childhood Programs And Local Economic Development, Timothy J. Bartik
Upjohn Press
Early childhood programs, if designed correctly, pay big economic dividends down the road because they increase the skills of their participants. And since many of those participants will remain in the same state or local area as adults, the local economy benefits: more persons with better skills attract business, which provides more and better jobs for the local economy. Bartik measures ratios of local economic development benefits to costs for both early childhood education and business incentives. He shows that early childhood programs and the best-designed business incentives can provide local benefits that significantly exceed costs. Given this, states and …

Using a variety of data sources, the contributors explore how performance standards and incentives affect the behavior of public managers and agency employees, their approaches to service delivery, and ultimately, the outcomes for participants.

Three years (2006–2008) of ground-based observations of the Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) in the urban environment of Athens, in the Eastern Mediterranean, are analysed in this work. Measurements were acquired with a Multi-Filter Rotating Shadowband Radiometer at five wavelengths. The daily average AOD at 500 nm is 0.23, and the mean A° ngstro¨m coefficient calculated between 415 and 867 nm is 1.41. The annual variability of AOD has a spring maximum dominated by coarse dust particles from the Sahara (AOD 0.34–0.42), while the diurnal pattern is typical for urban sites, with AOD steadily increasing throughout the day. The greatest contribution …

The human placenta expresses the genes for proopiomelanocortin and the major stress hormone, corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), profoundly altering the "fight or flight" stress system in mother and fetus. As pregnancy progresses, the levels of these stress hormones, including maternal cortisol, increase dramatically. These endocrine changes are important for fetal maturation, but if the levels are altered (e.g., in response to stress), they influence (program) the fetal nervous system with long-term consequences. The evidence indicates that fetal exposure to elevated levels of stress hormones (i) delays fetal nervous system maturation, (ii) restricts the neuromuscular development and alters the stress response of …
Diversity And Job Satisfaction: Reconciling Conflicting Theories And Findings, Douglas Campbell
Diversity And Job Satisfaction: Reconciling Conflicting Theories And Findings, Douglas Campbell
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
This is a multidisciplinary study on reconciling the conflicting theories and research concerning whether a person’s gender, race, or ethnicity affects his or her overall job satisfaction or degree of satisfaction with any element of the job. A disciplined baseline survey was performed. Statistical techniques, including a stepwise regression, were used to identify significant relationships. The findings and observations resolve what had appeared to be conflicting theories and research findings. The author concludes that in some instances, a legitimate correlation between gender, race, or ethnicity and job satisfaction or the degree of satisfaction with a particular job element may be …
