Cross-Validation Of A Recently Published Equation Predicting Energy Expenditure To Run Or Walk A Mile In Normal Weight And Overweight Adults, Cody Edward Morris Jan 2011

Cross-Validation Of A Recently Published Equation Predicting Energy Expenditure To Run Or Walk A Mile In Normal Weight And Overweight Adults, Cody Edward Morris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An equation recently published by Loftin, et al. (2010) was cross-validated using 30 subjects consisting of 10 normal weight walkers, 10 overweight walkers, and 10 distance runners. Gender was balanced across sub-groups. Participants walked or ran for 5 minutes at their preferred pace. Preferred walking pace was determined by six timed 50-ft trials and preferred running pace by the runner's typical training pace. Energy expenditure (EE) was determined via indirect calorimetry and reported in absolute units (kcal), and corrected to a mile distance. Body composition was assessed via DXA. EE per mile was predicted using the Loftin, et al. (2010) …

Do Statins Improve Outcomes In Patients With Asthma On Inhaled Corticosteroid Therapy? A Retrospective Analysis Of The Mississippi Medicaid Database 2002-2004., Tasneem Taher Lokhandwala Jan 2011

Do Statins Improve Outcomes In Patients With Asthma On Inhaled Corticosteroid Therapy? A Retrospective Analysis Of The Mississippi Medicaid Database 2002-2004., Tasneem Taher Lokhandwala

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Animal model studies and clinical trials have looked at the potential benefits of the anti-inflammatory properties of statins in asthma management with contradictory results. Therefore, the objective of this study is to determine if asthma patients on concurrent statin therapy are less likely to have asthma-related hospitalizations and emergency room (ER) visits. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using Medicaid data for 2002–2004. Asthma patients ?18 years old were identified using the ICD9 code 493.xx, from Jul 1, 2002 through Dec 31, 2003. The index date for an exposed subject was any date within the identification period, 180 days prior …

Chorister Formation Preferences In A Women's Choir, Janna Montgomery Jan 2011

Chorister Formation Preferences In A Women's Choir, Janna Montgomery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While conductors and audience members are not committed to a single formation, choristers have a clear preference: sectional or mixed. Why is this? Participants in this study included forty-six members of an auditioned women's choir from a large southern university who completed a survey after singing in sectional and mixed formation. These SSAA results maintain previous research findings by James Daugherty, Debra Atkinson, and Christopher Aspaas, et al. from female choristers in SATB settings: most women prefer mixed formation. All 46 of the participants (100%) perceived that formation generally affects the choral sound, so they think formation is important. Women's …

An Examination Of Factors That Influence The Program Choice Of Graduate Students In The Pharmaceutical Sciences., Tushar Baban Padwal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Objectives: The objectives of study were to: 1) identify factors considered important by pharmaceutical sciences graduate students during the application and acceptance phases of the admission process; 2) identify differences in the evaluative criteria for the two admission phases and for international and domestic students and 3) identify differences in the evaluative criteria for the two admission phases based on prior graduate school experience. Methods: Focus groups and depth interviews were conducted exploring issues surrounding the application and selection decisions of pharmaceutical sciences graduate students. Based on the results of this qualitative work and a review of the literature, an …

Functional Improvement Of Stroke Patients At Thai Red Cross Rehabilitation Center, N Tantisiriwat, A. Srinkapaibulaya

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Objective : To determine functional outcome as well as correlations between functional status at admission and length of hospital stay (LOHS) of stroke patients who completely attended rehabilitation program at Thai Red Cross Rehabilitation Center from year 2006 to 2008. Method : Reviewed medical record of stroke patients admitted during August 1, 2006 to December 31, 2008. LOHS, location after discharge and functional status as the following; modified Barthel activity of daily living index (BAI), household and community ambulation were obtained. BAI at admission and discharge were compared. The correlations between functional status at admission and LOHS were determined. Result …

Happiness And Related Factors Of Managing Directors In Industrial Plants In Bangkok, J Wattanasup, R. Kalayasiri Jan 2011

Happiness And Related Factors Of Managing Directors In Industrial Plants In Bangkok, J Wattanasup, R. Kalayasiri

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Objective : To study levels of happiness and related factors of managing directors in industrial plants in Bangkok. Participants : Four hundred and thirty-one subjects from industrial plants in Bangkok. Methods : Levels of happiness were obtained by using the Thai Mental Health Indicators-66 (TMHI-66). Demographic, work, and social data were also collected. Managing directors with different levels of happiness were compared with respect to their demographic, work, and social variables by using chi-square tests. Then, the variables that were statistically significantly associated with the level of happiness in the initial analysis were analyzed by using multiple logistic regression analysis. …

Pupil Sizes Of Bodies With Variant Post-Mortem Intervals, P Sinpajakpon, K. Vongpaisarnsin

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Objective : To determine the relationship between the pupil sizes and the post- mortem intervals in order to estimate the time of death. Setting : Chulalongkorn Forensics Center, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University Research design : Prospective descriptive study Materials and Methods : The pupil sizes of the bodies are measured by using pupil gauge with 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 millimeters scale. Results : Pupils of 171 bodies (141 males and 30 females) with age ranging from 20 to 70 years old are measured by using pupil gauge in particular post-mortem intervals. The average pupil …

Imaging Skeletal Muscle Using Second Harmonic Generation And Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering Microscopy, Christian P. Pfeffer, Bjorn R. Olsen, Feruz Ganikhanov, Francois Legare Jan 2011

Imaging Skeletal Muscle Using Second Harmonic Generation And Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering Microscopy, Christian P. Pfeffer, Bjorn R. Olsen, Feruz Ganikhanov, Francois Legare

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We describe experimental results on label free imaging of striated skeletal muscle using second harmonic generation (SHG) and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy. The complementarity of the SHG and CARS data makes it possible to clearly identify the main sarcomere sub-structures such as actin, myosin, acto-myosin, and the intact T-tubular system as it emanates from the sarcolemma. Owing to sub-micron spatial resolution and the high sensitivity of the CARS microscopy technique we were able to resolve individual myofibrils. In addition, key organelles such as mitochondria, cell nuclei and their structural constituents were observed revealing the entire structure of the …
