Demonization Of Divorce: Prevalence Rates And Links To Postdivorce Adjustment, Elizabeth J. Krumrei-Mancuso, Annette Mahoney, Kenneth I. Pargament

The meaning-making process can be crucial to individuals as they adjust to their divorce. Demonization is a negative coping response (also known as spiritual struggle) that involves appraising someone or something as related to demonic forces. Individuals may cognitively frame a divorce as the work of Satan in order to understand suffering while maintaining beliefs in a just world or benevolent God. In this study, nearly half (48%) of the community sample (N = 100) endorsed some form of demonization related to their recent divorce. Differences were observed in psychological postdivorce adjustment (post-traumatic stress, depression, anger, and positive/negative spiritual emotions) …
Grateful To God Or Just Plain Grateful? A Comparison Of Religious And General Gratitude, David H. Rosmarin, Steven Pirutinsky, Adam B. Cohen, Elizabeth J. Krumrei-Mancuso
Grateful To God Or Just Plain Grateful? A Comparison Of Religious And General Gratitude, David H. Rosmarin, Steven Pirutinsky, Adam B. Cohen, Elizabeth J. Krumrei-Mancuso

Psychological science has consistently highlighted links between gratitude and religion, however mediating pathways by which religion relates to gratitude remain ambiguous. Further, it is unclear whether religious gratitude (e.g., gratitude to God) is more related to well-being than general gratitude. To address these gaps, we assessed for both religious and general dimensions of gratitude alongside measures of religious commitment and mental/physical well-being in a diverse sample of n = 405 adult individuals. Consistent with previous research, gratitude was positively correlated with religious commitment (r = 0.45, p < 0.001). This relationship, however, was fully mediated by gratitude towards God. Using hierarchical linear regression, results further found that the interaction of religious commitment and religious gratitude added unique variance in predicting mental well-being, over and above general gratitude. This suggests that being grateful to God enhances the psychological benefits of gratitude in accordance with one's level of religious commitment.
Incorporating Spiritual Beliefs Into A Cognitive Model Of Worry, David H. Rosmarin, Steven Pirutinsky, Randy P. Auerbach, Elizabeth J. Krumrei-Mancuso
Incorporating Spiritual Beliefs Into A Cognitive Model Of Worry, David H. Rosmarin, Steven Pirutinsky, Randy P. Auerbach, Elizabeth J. Krumrei-Mancuso

Cognitive theory and research have traditionally highlighted the relevance of the core beliefs about oneself, the world, and the future to human emotions. For some individuals, however, core beliefs may also explicitly involve spiritual themes. In this article, we propose a cognitive model of worry, in which positive/negative beliefs about the Divine affect symptoms through the mechanism of intolerance of uncertainty. Using mediation analyses, we found support for our model across two studies, in particular, with regards to negative spiritual beliefs. These findings highlight the importance of assessing for spiritual alongside secular convictions when creating cognitive-behavioral case formulations in the …

Spiritual Stress And Coping Model Of Divorce: A Longitudinal Study., Elizabeth J. Krumrei-Mancuso, Annette Mahoney, Kenneth I. Pargament

This study represents the first longitudinal effort to use a spiritual stress and coping model to predict adults' psychosocial adjustment following divorce. A community sample of 89 participants completed measures at the time of their divorce and 1 year later. Though the sample endorsed slightly lower levels of religiosity than the general U.S. population, most reported spiritual appraisals and positive and negative religious coping tied to divorce. Hierarchical regression analyses controlling general religiousness and nonreligious forms of coping indicated that (a) appraising divorce as a sacred loss or desecration at the time it occurred predicted more depressive symptoms and dysfunctional …
Where Are The Records? Handling Lost/Destroyed Records In Child Welfare Tort Litigation, Dale Margolin Cecka
Where Are The Records? Handling Lost/Destroyed Records In Child Welfare Tort Litigation, Dale Margolin Cecka
Law Faculty Publications
As child welfare professionals, we have all encountered the “missing” record, most often during day-to-day advocacy. For those who practice child welfare tort litigation, incomplete discovery is also common, even though case records can be critical in determining negligence or malfeasance. In other forms of civil litigation, judges are asked to hold parties accountable for losing or destroying records, and juries are allowed to draw negative inferences about the missing evidence. In contrast, an investigation of child welfare torts reveals that when a defending agency fails to produce credible records, the issue is simply not litigated or does not affect …
Investigations Into The Use Of The M-Protein For The Production Of A Vaccine Against Streptococcus Equi Subspecies Equi Using Chicken Igy, Rachel Lantz
Senior Honors Theses
Strangles is a destructive disease in horses caused by an infection of the bacteria Streptococcus equi subspecies equi. Current vaccines designed to protect horse populations for this infection are only 50% effective at preventing the disease. The aim of this study was to develop a vaccine against Streptococcus equi by targeting the antiphagocytic virulence factor of the bacteria, the M-Protein (SeM18). SeM18 was expressed using the ampicillin resistant pET vector system and purified by metal affinity column using Cu(II). Purified protein was used to vaccinate chickens, and the anti-SeM18 IgY present in the yolk of the eggs produced by …

The Door(S) Of No Return : How The Legacy Of Slavery Impacts Birth Outcomes For African American Women, Jennifer Baxendale Lally
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study will explore the health disparity between the birth outcomes for white Americans and African Americans. Over the past five years there has been an increase in the literature coming out of the medical community examining this disparity. The recent interest has to do, in part, with the unresolved mystery these stark discrepancy posses. Through an exploration of historical developments beginning with the trans Atlantic slave through to the current state of African American women's reproductive health I will attempt to expand the understanding of how we as a society might better address the great imbalance in health …
The Impact Of Race And Psychosocial Factors On Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Young Adults In The Prodrome To Psychosis : A Project Based Upon An Investigation At The Center For Intervention Development And Applied Research, Boston, Massachusetts, Paula Daniela Mazzotta
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Few studies have examined how the mental health system in the U.S. presents barriers to help seeking especially among non-White populations. The purpose of this investigation was to identify racial disparities and psychosocial barriers to help seeking among clients in the prodrome to psychosis vulnerable to progression into schizophrenia. Using secondary data from a mixed-methods questionnaire, this study collected descriptive data relaying the perspectives of People of Color and their White prodrome counterparts on their perceived needs, attitudes, and experiences of professional mental health services. Using a sample (N=15) of prodromal individuals in the Boston-metro area, a semi-structured questionnaire measured …

Environmental Racism : Exploring Suffering And Healing Through Collective Resistance, Brooke Allison Moore
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study was undertaken to explore how trauma theory can broaden our understanding of the psychological impact of environmental racism, and how liberation theory could be utilized to better prepare social workers to identify and understand the impact of environmental racism in the lives of clients and elucidate the role the profession should play in alleviating this form of oppression. Aspiring to examine the phenomenon and each of the theories from the vantage point of a perspective that falls outside of a dominant lens, this study explored race-based traumatic stress as a crucial element of a comprehensive definition of …
Towards A Stakeholder-Shareholder Theory Of Corporate Governance: A Comparative Analysis, Katharine V. Jackson
Towards A Stakeholder-Shareholder Theory Of Corporate Governance: A Comparative Analysis, Katharine V. Jackson
UC Law Business Journal
This article sets forth an argument as to why the empowerment of stakeholder investors presents the only currently viable means for stakeholders to influence the behavior of the American public corporation. The article explores the history of corporations in America, Germany, and the United Kingdom and analyzes the disparate theories of corporate governance between the countries. Through this analysis, it will become clear that: (1) of the various interests having control over corporate decision-making, shareholders can best accommodate stakeholder interests; (2) stakeholder interests can be represented in corporate management and decisionmaking; and (3) the empowerment of stakeholder-shareholders can reform corporate …
Implementation Of China's 2007 Open Government Information Regulation, Nolan R. Shaw
Implementation Of China's 2007 Open Government Information Regulation, Nolan R. Shaw
UC Law Business Journal
This note reviews the implementation of China's 2007 Open Government Information Regulation both in and outside the courts. Increased information about the workings of government promotes fairness, improved government work, civic participation, and faith in government. This note reviews the unsurprising hiccoughs in the initial implementation of the OGI Regulation, but also notes that most government offices are making positive efforts to comply with the OGI Regulation. The note concludes that the law is an important step in China's move towards greater transparency, but needs broader judicial application to be effective.
Why Can't We Be Friends?: Why California Needs A Lifestyle Discrimination Statute To Protect Employees From Employment Actions Based On Their Off-Duty Behavior, Jean M. Roche
UC Law Business Journal
This note explores the employment implications that social networking has on private employees and discusses the need for a lifestyle discrimination statute in California. The note begins with an overview of the increasing use of social networking, both within the employment context as well as within society as a whole. The note then analyzes current privacy protections under federal and California law and contrasts those protections with lifestyle discrimination statutes adopted in Colorado and New York. Ultimately, the note concludes that California should adopt a statute that would provide protection to employees who are terminated for off-duty, off-site behaviors which …

Therapeutic Options For The Treatment Of Hypertension In Children And Adolescents, Mary M. Stephens, Beth A. Fox, Lisa Maxwell
ETSU Faculty Works
Primary hypertension in children is increasing in prevalence with many cases likely going undiagnosed. The prevalence is currently estimated at between 3%-5% in the United States and may be higher in certain ethnic groups. Primary hypertension once felt to be rare in children is now considered to be about five times more common than secondary hypertension. This review provides information to guide physicians through an organized approach to: 1) screening children and adolescents for hypertension during routine visits; 2) using normative percentile data for diagnosis and classification; 3) performing a clinical evaluation to identify the presence of co-morbidities; 4) initiating …

A Study On Becoming An Alternatively Certified Career And Technical Educator, Kymberli Cotton-Flanagan
Dissertations
This mixed method study examined the perspectives of twelve practicing high school CTE teachers engaged in a newly approved university model for alternative certification.
Using Creswell's (2008) Sequential Exploratory Design and the lens of adult learning theory as established in Knowles' (1970) Theory of Andragogy, this study examines how participants in this CTE alternative certification program, describe their experiences as related to the assumptions of adult learning. Relationships between participant's adult learning preferences and the extent to which they experienced their program were also examined.
While literature on alternative certification theories and implications is available, specific research on the use …
