Multiple Personality And Channeling, Rayna L. Rogers, D.O.
Multiple Personality And Channeling, Rayna L. Rogers, D.O.
Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry
Psychiatry in the 1980's and 1990's has seen a rapid progression in the understanding of dissociative disorders, especially multiple personality disorder. Another phenomenon which has had a parallel rise in the past decade is trance channeling. Channeling is the process by which an individual enters a trance-like state and surrenders control of the body to a "guide" or "entity" who communicates with the listeners or "sitters" gathered for a "reading." The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between these two phenomena, specifically questioning whether channeling is a variant of multiple personality disorder or if it is pathological.

Editor's Column, Edward Kim, M.D.
Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry
He sat on the other side of the large government-issue desk, a bland, a pathetic expression on his face. His vague, contradictory story of visual and auditory hallucinations was punctuated by frequent pauses and "you know,"as if he were expecting me to help him fabricate his symptoms. He himself didn't seem to be trying very hard to convince me of his alleged distress. It would have been simple to admit him; the paperwork was minimal, and there were plenty of beds. I mentioned my skepticism of his history as I told him why I wouldn't admit him. The ensuing flood …

"Art thou halting on the heavenward road, my brother, carefully weighing the cost of a life of service, unwilling to come to the Lord, lest he should choose thee as a laborer in his vineyard? .... And Jesus of Nazareth sends a message to thee too, my sister! Thou, who dost recognize his power; thou, who dost secretly love him in thy heart, and yet dost dread to take the step that will place thee as his acknowledged disciple before the world. ... Fix thine eye upon the Cross, and forget thyself in the sight of thy bleeding Saviour. "He …

Faculty Research, Publications, and Presentations
The Louis Calder Memorial Library received an Express Community Day Award from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) to partner with the Miami-Dade County Public Library librarians to promote emergency preparedness and safety awareness. Named Safety Fair: Keep Your Family Safe - Emergency Preparedness at Home and Away, the events improved the public librarians’ knowledge of NN/LM resources, such as TOXNET, MedlinePlus®, ToxTown®, ToxMystery®, and WISER®, as well as University-created resources. A train-the-trainer program was also implemented for the public librarians.

China has a rich and well documented tradition and diverse usage of plants. China provides examples of the incorporation of plant derived drugs in medicine. The diverse usage of plants is also reflected in the many kinds of Chinese food that are consumed by people of various nations around the world. China is one of the "cradles" of agriculture, the birth place of the cultivation of many important crops, including rice, millet, soybeans, and water chestnuts, and is the only undisrupted major ancient civilization in the world. Some plants find use in almost every aspect of Chinese life, such as …

Reactive Oxygen Species Modulation Of Na/K-Atpase Regulates Fibrosis And Renal Proximal Tubular Sodium Handling, Jiang Liu, David J. Kennedy, Yanling Yan, Joseph I. Shapiro Md
Pharmaceutical Science and Research
The Na/K-ATPase is the primary force regulating renal sodium handling and plays a key role in both ion homeostasis and blood pressure regulation. Recently, cardiotonic steroids (CTS)-mediated Na/K-ATPase signaling has been shown to regulate fibrosis, renal proximal tubule (RPT) sodium reabsorption, and experimental Dahl salt-sensitive hypertension in response to a high-salt diet. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are an important modulator of nephron ion transport. As there is limited knowledge regarding the role of ROS-mediated fibrosis and RPT sodium reabsorption through the Na/K-ATPase, the focus of this review is to examine the possible role of ROS in the regulation of Na/K-ATPase …

Health And Wellness Coaching For Older Adults Within A Faith Community, Julie K. Philbrook
Health And Wellness Coaching For Older Adults Within A Faith Community, Julie K. Philbrook
Theses and Graduate Projects
By the year 2030, an estimated 22% of the U.S. population will be older than 65, which translates to more than 70 million people. Maintaining and improving an older adult's functional status in all aspects of his or her life will be crucial for elderly persons, their communities, and society as a whole. Nurses practicing within a faith community have a unique opportunity to autonomously implement community-focused wellness programs that will honor each person's self described needs. The purpose of this project is to develop a nurse facilitated health and wellness program for older adults in a suburban Lutheran faith …

Nanoparticulate Formulations Of Mithramycin Analogs For Enhanced Cytotoxicity, Daniel Scott, Jürgen Rohr, Younsoo Bae
Nanoparticulate Formulations Of Mithramycin Analogs For Enhanced Cytotoxicity, Daniel Scott, Jürgen Rohr, Younsoo Bae
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
Mithramycin (MTM), a natural product of soil bacteria from the Streptomyces genus, displays potent anticancer activity but has been limited clinically by severe side effects and toxicities. Engineering of the MTM biosynthetic pathway has produced the 3-side-chain-modified analogs MTM SK (SK) and MTM SDK (SDK), which have exhibited increased anticancer activity and improved therapeutic index. However, these analogs still suffer from low bioavailability, short plasma retention time, and low tumor accumulation. In an effort to aid with these shortcomings, two nanoparticulate formulations, poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(aspartate hydrazide) self-assembled and cross-linked micelles, were investigated with regard to the ability to load and pH …
