Subtidal Macroalgal Richness, Diversity And Turnover, At Multiple Spatial Scales, Along The Southwestern Australian Coastline, David Smale, G Kendrick, Thomas Wernberg
Research outputs 2011
Patterns of species richness are governed by processes that act at vastly different spatial scales. In the marine system of southwest Australia, macroalgal assemblage structure and richness is thought to be strongly influenced by both the Leeuwin Current, which acts at large regional spatial scales, and small-scale processes such as competition, wave disturbance and habitat heterogeneity. We examined macroalgal species richness and diversity at multiple spatial scales using a three-factor hierarchal design. Spatial extents ranged from metres (between quadrats) to many hundreds of kilometres (between regions), and the study encompassed almost 2000 km of temperate coastline. Macroalgal assemblages were highly …

Spatially Resolved Inhomogeneous Depressions Of The Excitons Zeeman Splitting In An Integrated Magnetic-Multiple Quantum Wells System, Ahmed Abdelrahman, Hoon Soo Kang, Sang Youp Yim, Mikhail Vasiliev, Kamal Alameh, Yong Lee
Research outputs 2011
We report on the generation of a nonuniform spatial distribution of the heavy and light-hole excitons in a multiple quantum wells system integrated with a localized inhomogeneous weak magnetic field. An inhomogeneous spatially resolved depression of the Zeeman splittings of the heavy-hole excitons and the light-hole excitons with respect to their translational wave vectors is observed. A localized inverted concentration of the two types of the excitons due to the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field is also measured. A simple method to integrate permanent magnetic materials with the multiple quantum wells system is used to create an accessible degree of …

Student Opinions On Their Development Of Non-Technical Skills In It Education, W Makasiranondh, S Maj, D Veal
Research outputs 2011
It is recognized that non-technical or soft skills are a vital part of the IT curriculum and hence are considered to be core curriculum components, particularly in the USA and Australia and is also an important worldwide issue. An extensive analysis within an Australian university context found a mismatch between employer expectations and the university-based instruction in these skills. However, it was noted that this unpreparedness in soft skills may be because students may not have appreciated the importance of these skills – a result confirmed by this study, which used a questionnaire delivered to project students undertaking a range …
Lipstick: More Than A Fashion Trend, Madeleine Ogilvie, Maria Ryan
Lipstick: More Than A Fashion Trend, Madeleine Ogilvie, Maria Ryan
Research outputs 2011
This paper explores and discusses why women purchase and wear lipstick and the behaviours associated with its use. Design/methodology/approach: A study of 300 female lipstick users were interviewed using a semi structured questionnaire. Findings: The study indicated that women use lipstick in a significant way to transform and present themselves; using it to reflect their daily fluctuations in moods and identity. Although lipstick is a mainstream fashion discourse, Western Australian society (where the study was located) maintains strict codes of conduct in applying and using the product. Behaviours associated with lipstick use are steeped in ritual and cultural customs. Research …
Prescription Drug Use Among Detainees: Prevalence, Sources And Links To Crime, Catherine Mcgregor, Natalie Gately, Jennifer Fleming
Prescription Drug Use Among Detainees: Prevalence, Sources And Links To Crime, Catherine Mcgregor, Natalie Gately, Jennifer Fleming
Research outputs 2011
Concern regarding the diversion and non-medical use of prescription pharmaceuticals continues to grow as anecdotal evidence and other research points to a sizeable increase in the illegal market for such drugs. Estimating the prevalence of illegal use and understanding how pharmaceutical drugs come to be traded in the illegal drug market remain key research priorities for policymakers and practitioners in both the public health and law enforcement sectors. This report is the first of its kind in Australia to examine the self-reported use of illicit pharmaceuticals among a sample of police detainees surveyed as part of the Australian Institute of …
Self-Employment: Policy Panacea For An Ageing Population?, Kate Lewis, Elizabeth Walker
Self-Employment: Policy Panacea For An Ageing Population?, Kate Lewis, Elizabeth Walker
Research outputs 2011
Self employment or small business ownership is often thought to be a viable alternative to mainstream employment. This is particular the case for budding small business owners who have a new product or service that they want to take to market. Many of these individuals use their specific skills and competencies to go on to become the successful operators of global organisations. Yet the growth in business start-up by mature (yet operationally naïve) people belies the notion that small business owners require any specialised skill set at all. This paper posits some questions as to why that is the case, …
Pax Genes During Neural Development And Their Potential Role In Neuroregeneration, Jennifer A. Thompson, Melanie Ziman
Pax Genes During Neural Development And Their Potential Role In Neuroregeneration, Jennifer A. Thompson, Melanie Ziman
Research outputs 2011
Pax genes encode a family of transcription factors that have long been recognised as obligate contributors to embryonic development of the CNS, with evidence obtained from various animal models illustrating phylogenetically conserved functions. Within the CNS, Pax genes play substantial roles in cellular and regional specification, proliferation, progenitor cell maintenance, anti-apoptosis and neural differentiation. This comprehensive review details the critical functions of those Pax genes involved in pre- and post-natal CNS development, provides possible molecular mechanisms by which Pax genes contribute to proliferation and differentiation of neuronal cells, and explains observed changes in Pax gene expression in response to neurotrauma …

Research outputs 2011
Project management is widely used to deliver projects on time, within budget and of defined quality. However, there is little published information describing its use in managing health and medical research projects. We used project management in the Alcohol and Pregnancy Project (2006-2008) and in this paper report researchers' opinions on project management and whether it made a difference to the project. A national interdisciplinary group of 20 researchers, one of whom was the project manager, formed the Steering Committee for the project. We used project management to ensure project outputs and outcomes were achieved and all aspects of the …

Cooking Up A Nation: Food, Culture, And Identity In The Early American Republic, Karen Anne Bailor
Cooking Up A Nation: Food, Culture, And Identity In The Early American Republic, Karen Anne Bailor
All Master's Theses
Post-Revolutionary American food, common and genteel, acted as both a construct of and contributor to the development of an American national identity as well as a national culinary identity. From 1796 and into the early nineteenth century, Americans actively strove to distinguish themselves from their British backgrounds. As a result, the public discourse of American food shifted to reflect new values of simplicity and equality. Additionally, a new American cuisine began to take shape which embraced native crops, linking those who consumed them to the American soil, and ultimately, the new nation. Through the presence of particular dishes at politically …

Assessing The Balance: Burkean Frames And Lil' Bush, Elizabeth Anne Sills
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In light of former president George W. Bush’s remarkably low approval ratings during the later years of his administration, the Comedy Central program Lil’ Bush seemed to be a satiric outlet for societal angst. A closer examination of the show, however, reveals that its content is funny, but does more to entertain than it does to criticize. Using the dichotomy of Burke’s comedic and humorous frames as a standard for analysis, this thesis probes the program to determine the nature of its humor. Although the show does include some critiques of George W. Bush and the federal executive branch as …
Aesthetic Appreciation Of The Natural Environment: Scientific Knowledge & The Extension From Aesthetics To Ethics, John K. Hays
Aesthetic Appreciation Of The Natural Environment: Scientific Knowledge & The Extension From Aesthetics To Ethics, John K. Hays
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Aesthetics has played an influential role in how we ascribe value to the environment. Yet, it seems that if we are to take the beauty of the natural world seriously, certain aesthetics judgments must be better than others. The scientific cognitive model posits that the natural world must be interpreted through an understanding of biological and geological categories, which are provided by scientific knowledge and common sense. While there are clearly merits to this model, it is not without its own set of problems and limitations. These problems exist in both the model itself and with its extension to environmental …

Communal Empathy In Native American Older Adults, Heather Lynn Dorlando
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Recently it has been posited that resilience is a dynamic process that develops, fluctuates, and is embedded in social context. With a dynamic systems approach it is possible to investigate resilience within a Native American community, which includes addressing the concept of cultural resilience and empathy. A secondary qualitative data analysis of 28 interviews with Native American older adults was conducted. Research questions addressed the context in which empathy was demonstrated, what dimensions of empathy were utilized, if empathy was used as an emotion-focused or communal coping strategy, and what outcomes were described when using empathy as a coping strategy. …

Combining Exercise Prescription & A Pedometer-Base Program To Reduce Cvd Risk Factors In Middle-Aged Adults, Bret James Ralston
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. A majority of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease are modifiable through drug therapy, diet, and exercise. Purpose: To determine if the student-run stress testing and exercise prescription program 1) resulted in subsequent lifestyle changes and in reduced CVD risk, 2) if the addition of pedometer-base exercise prescription in conjunction with weekly phone calls added to the student prescription would differentially reduce CVD risk, and 3) to determine if either of these interventions in middle-aged adults improves quality of life (QOL). Methods: Forty-two participants (21 …

There is limited knowledge about coping and psychological adjustment in Latter-Day Saint (LDS) Polynesians. This study examined religiosity, collectivistic coping, and psychological well-being among 94 LDS Polynesians residing in the Midwest. As hypothesized, religiously committed LDS Polynesians were more likely to have a healthy psychological well-being and were also likely to use collectivistic coping styles, such that high helpfulness ratings on family support and religion-spirituality coping styles were significantly correlated with a positive psychological well-being. Family support also moderated the relationship between LDS Polynesians’ religious commitment and psychological well-being. Implications are discussed in terms of religiosity, culture, coping, and psychological …

Egfr Signaling Regulates Synaptic Connectivity Via Gurken, Sarah Naylor
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The synapse is the essential unit of neural function. It is critical to understand how synapses form during development, how they are maintained throughout the life of an organism, and how their structure and function are affected by neural activity. An understanding of these aspects of synapses will likely provide insight into the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, mental retardation or epilepsy. To identify novel regulators of synaptic development, I screened for mutants with defects in synaptic morphology and growth at the Drosophila larval neuromuscular junction: NMJ). My screen identified several mutants with defects in various aspects of …

Expression And Characterization Of The Bacterial Mechanosensitive Channel Mscs In Xenopus Laevis Oocytes., Elizabeth S. Haswell, Grigory Maksaev
Biology Faculty Research
We have successfully expressed and characterized mechanosensitive channel of small conductance (MscS) from Escherichia coli in oocytes of the African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis. MscS expressed in oocytes has the same single-channel conductance and voltage dependence as the channel in its native environment. Two hallmarks of MscS activity, the presence of conducting substates at high potentials and reversible adaptation to a sustained stimulus, are also exhibited by oocyte-expressed MscS. In addition to its ease of use, the oocyte system allows the user to work with relatively large patches, which could be an advantage for the visualization of membrane deformation. …

Myosin Vi Regulates Actin Structure Specialization Through Conserved Cargo-Binding Domain Sites, Mamiko Isaji, Marta Lenartowska, Tatsuhiko Noguchi, Deborah J. Frank, Kathryn G. Miller
Biology Faculty Research
Actin structures are often stable, remaining unchanged in organization for the lifetime of a differentiated cell. Little is known about stable actin structure formation, organization, or maintenance. During Drosophila spermatid individualization, long-lived actin cones mediate cellular remodeling. Myosin VI is necessary for building the dense meshwork at the cones' fronts. We test several ideas for myosin VI's mechanism of action using domain deletions or site-specific mutations of myosin VI. The head (motor) and globular tail (cargo-binding) domains were both needed for localization at the cone front and dense meshwork formation. Several conserved partner-binding sites in the globular tail previously identified …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The remains labeled University of Montana Forensic Case #12 (UMFC 12) were unearthed on August 30, 1983 during the construction of Cruse Avenue in Helena, Montana near the old School Administration Building on Allen Street. Construction workers, using a bulldozer accidently exposed the decomposing grave (Roesgen, 1983). It has been speculated that these remains might belong to a Chinese laborer dating back to the gold rush (Joyce, 1983). An 1884 map of Last Chance Gulch, in which the remains were discovered, indicate that a Chinese cemetery is in the area but the exact coordinates have never been determined (Joyce, 1983). …
